Abstract Objective To explore the feasibility of applying CT Hounsfield Units (HUs) for the assessment of preoperative paraspinal muscle fat infiltration (FI) in different segments in patients who underwent anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF). To compare the consistency of preoperative paraspinal muscle FI evaluations using MRI and those via CT HUs in patients who underwent ACDF surgery. Methods Ninety-five patients (45 males and 50 females, aged 37‒71 years) who received CT and MRI examinations and underwent ACDF surgery were retrospectively analyzed. In the axial T2-weighted MR images at the median level of the C3/4, C4/5, and C5/6 segments, regions of interests (ROIs) were delineated along the boundaries of the cervical multifidus (MF) and semispinalis cervicis (Scer) muscles. Using the threshold tool in ImageJ software, areas of fat tissue and intermuscular septa within the ROI were quantified. The effective cross-sectional area (ECSA) for each side was obtained by subtracting the areas of fat tissue and intermuscular septa from the total ROI area. The ratio of the fat tissue area to the CSA was then calculated to determine the initial FI value. The depth of subcutaneous fat from the midline spinous process to the epidermis at the median plane of the C4/5 intervertebral disc was measured. The initial FI values were then divided by the depth of fat to determine the post-correction FI value. Using the Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS), at identical segments and planes, ROIs were delineated using the same method as in MRI under a standard soft tissue window (width of 500 HU, level of 60 HU). The CT HU values were measured within these defined areas. The CT HU values from both sides are summed to obtain the total HU value for the segment. According to whether the measurement results of two sets of data follow a normal distribution, Pearson’s test or Sperman’s test was used to analyze the correlation. Results On MRI, a statistically significant difference was observed in the post-correction FI only at the C3/4 segment compared to the other two segments (P 0.05). The CT HU results showed a substantial discrepancy between C3/4 and C4/5 segments and between C3/4 and C5/6 segments (P 0.05). The consistency analysis revealed a relatively strong correlation between the post-correction FI and CT HU values of the C3/4 and C4/5 segments. Furthermore, a strong correlation was detected in the variations in the measurement outcomes at the C5/6 segment. Conclusion Patients requiring surgical treatment for the cervical spine exhibit varying degrees of FI in paraspinal muscles across different locations and segments. Evaluating the degree of FI in the paraspinal muscles of the cervical spine through CT HU values is feasible. There is considerable consistency between the post-correction FI assessed under MRI and the measurements of CT HU values in evaluating the FI of paraspinal muscles in the cervical spine.

Abstract Background Sacral screw loosening is a typical complication after internal fixation surgery through the vertebral arch system. Bicortical fixation can successfully prevent screw loosening, and how improving the rate of bicortical fixation is a challenging clinical investigation. Objective To investigate the feasibility of improving the double corticality of sacral screws and the optimal fixation depth to achieve double cortical fixation by combining the torque measurement method with bare hands. Methods Ninety-seven cases of posterior lumbar internal fixation with pedicle root system were included in this study. Based on the tactile feedback of the surgeon indicating the expected penetration of the screw into the contralateral cortex of the sacrum, the screws were further rotated by 180°, 360°, or 720°, categorized into the bicortical 180° group, bicortical 360° group, and bicortical 720° group, respectively. Intraoperatively, the torque during screw insertion was recorded. Postoperatively, the rate of double-cortex engagement was evaluated at 7 days, and screw loosening was assessed at 1 year follow-up. Results The bicortical rates of the 180° group, 360° group, and 720° group were 66.13%, 91.18% and 93.75%, respectively. There were statistically significant differences between the 180° group and both the 360° and 720° groups (P 0.05).The rates of loosening of sacral screws in the 180° group, 360° group, and 720° group were 20.97%, 7.35% and 7.81%, respectively. There were statistically significant differences between the 180° group and both the 360° and 720° groups (P 0.05). The bicortical 360° group achieved a relatively satisfactory rate of dual cortical purchase while maintaining a lower rate of screw loosening. Conclusion Manual insertion of sacral screws with the assistance of a torque measurement device can achieve a relatively satisfactory dual cortical purchase rate while reducing patient hospitalization costs.

The Manjusri Hall and Samantabhadra Hall of Longchang Temple in Baohua Mountain are representative of a series of Wuliang Halls, a distinctive architectural heritage type in China. To better understand the technical and artistic characteristics of the timber imitation by bricks of the Wuliang Hall, the spatial, formal, and structural features of the two halls are analyzed. Firstly, an accurate survey of the architectural heritage is conducted to obtain precise geometric dimensions, enabling analyses of spatial and formal aspects of the hall. Subsequently, the structural performance of the hall under static load is analyzed by finite element method. The results indicate that barrel vaults and arches of different sizes serve distinct spatial functions. The appearance form of the Wuliang Hall generally aligns with the style of the Ming and Qing official timber buildings, while the detailed construction methods may be adjusted due to material or structural considerations. Vault and arch structures are employed to adapt to brick masonry, but the sill walls, tops and imposts of arches and vaults are prone to tensile damage under vertical loads or seismic actions. These results could contribute to the interpretation of the technical motivations and human ideologies for Chinese masonry timber-imitating structures, and making conservation strategies for buildings of this type.

Objective To investigate the correlation between magnetic resonance imaging-based vertebral bone quality (VBQ) score and screw loosening after dynamic pedicle screw fixation with polyetheretherketone (PEEK) rods, and evaluate its predictive value. Methods A retrospective analysis was conducted on the patients who underwent dynamic pedicle screw fixation with PEEK rods from March 2017 to June 2022. Data on age, sex, body mass index, hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia history, long-term smoking, alcohol consumption, VBQ score, L1–4 average Hounsfield unit (HU) value, surgical fixation length, and the lowest instrumented vertebra were collected. Logistic regression analysis was employed to assess the relationship between VBQ score and pedicle screw loosening (PSL). Results A total of 24 patients experienced PSL after surgery (20.5%). PSL group and non-PSL group showed statistical differences in age, number of fixed segments, fixation to the sacrum, L1–4 average HU value, and VBQ score (p < 0.05). The VBQ score in the PSL group was higher than that in the non-PSL group (3.56 ± 0.45 vs. 2.77 ± 0.31, p < 0.001). In logistic regression analysis, VBQ score (odds ratio, 3.425; 95% confidence interval, 1.552–8.279) were identified as independent risk factors for screw loosening. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve for VBQ score predicting PSL was 0.819 (p < 0.05), with the optimal threshold of 3.15 (sensitivity, 83.1%; specificity, 80.5%). Conclusion The VBQ score can independently predict postoperative screw loosening in patients undergoing lumbar dynamic pedicle screw fixation with PEEK rods, and its predictive value is comparable to HU value.

Abstract To address the surrounding rock control problems in high-stressed deep mining roadways, we used Suncun Coal Mine with maximum mining depth in China as the engineering background to analyze failure laws of surrounding rock of gob-side entry driving. Combined with field tests of anchor grouting parameters, we carried out numerical simulation with multi factors. The evolution of surrounding rock stress and displacement under different pressure relief parameters were clarified. On the basis, we proposed an integrated control method for the comprehensive pressure relief for coal and rock mass and anchor grouting reinforcement in deep mining roadway. We used geomechanical model test to compare gob-side entry driving method and this new method. The results showed that this new method can reduce average stress at the working face by 15.8% and peak stress of roadway shoulder by 12.5%. We applied this method in the field, which reduced roadway deformation by 535 mm.

Objective To systematically review relevant animal models of disk degeneration induced through the endplate injury pathway and to provide suitable animal models for exploring the intrinsic mechanisms and treatment of disk degeneration.Design PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane and other databases were searched for literature related to animal models of disk degeneration induced by the endplate injury pathway from establishment to August 2024, and key contents in the literature were screened and extracted to analyze and evaluate each type of animal model using the literature induction method.Results Fifteen animal experimental studies were finally included in the literature, which can be categorized into direct injury models and indirect injury models, of which direct injury models include transvertebral injury models and transpedicular approach injury models, and indirect injury models include endplate ischemia models and vertebral fracture-induced endplate injury models. The direct injury models have a minimum observation period of 2 months and a maximum of 32 wk. All direct injury models were successful in causing disk degeneration, and the greater the number of interventions, the greater the degree of disk degeneration caused. The observation period for the indirect injury models varied from 4 wk to 70 wk. Of the 9 studies, only one study was unsuccessful in inducing disk degeneration, and this was the first animal study in this research to attempt to intervene on the endplate to cause disk degeneration.Conclusion The damage to the direct injury model is more immediate and controllable in extent and can effectively lead to disk degeneration. The indirect injury models do not directly damage the endplate structure, making it easier to observe the physiological and pathological condition of the endplate and associated structures of the disk. None of them can completely simulate the corresponding process of endplate injury-induced disk degeneration in humans, and there is no uniform clinical judgment standard for this type of model. The most appropriate animal model still needs further exploration and discovery.

Sulfonamides are not only widely applied in clinics but also highly valued in animal husbandry. Recently, it has become common for sulfonamide residues to exceed the standard limits in food, which can affect human health. Current regulations limit these residues. Therefore, we constructed a new limit test method to rapidly determine the levels of sulfonamide residues. Six sulfonamides were detected using the latest method called TLC-SERS, namely, sulfamethasone (A), sulfamethazine (B), sulfadoxine (C), sulfamethoxydiazine (D), sulfamethoxazole (E), and sulfathiazole (F). The optimal conditions for SERS detection were investigated for these six drugs, and the separation effects of different TLC spreaders on them were compared. Then, we successfully established a separation system using dichloromethane–methanol–ammonia in a ratio of 5:1:0.25 (v/v/v), which provided good separation effects on the six drugs. The residues were preliminarily separated via TLC. A silver sol solution was added to the spot on the silica gel G plate at the corresponding specific shift values, and SERS detection was performed. The sample solution was placed on the spot under a 532 nm laser, and the SERS spectrum was collected and analyzed for the six sulfonamides. The results showed obvious variations in the SERS spectrum among the six sulfonamides, with the LODs being 12.5, 6.4, 6.3, 7.1, 18.8, and 6.2 ng/mL from A to F, respectively, and an RSD of

IntroductionDespite advancements in face anti-spoofing technology, attackers continue to pose challenges with their evolving deceptive methods. This is primarily due to the increased complexity of their attacks, coupled with a diversity in presentation modes, acquisition devices, and prosthetic materials. Furthermore, the scarcity of negative sample data exacerbates the situation by causing domain shift issues and impeding robust generalization. Hence, there is a pressing need for more effective cross-domain approaches to bolster the model’s capability to generalize across different scenarios.MethodsThis method improves the effectiveness of face anti-spoofing systems by analyzing pseudo-negative sample features, expanding the training dataset, and boosting cross-domain generalization. By generating pseudo-negative features with a new algorithm and aligning these features with the use of KL divergence loss, we enrich the negative sample dataset, aiding the training of a more robust feature classifier and broadening the range of attacks that the system can defend against.ResultsThrough experiments on four public datasets (MSU-MFSD, OULU-NPU, Replay-Attack, and CASIA-FASD), we assess the model’s performance within and across datasets by controlling variables. Our method delivers positive results in multiple experiments, including those conducted on smaller datasets.DiscussionThrough controlled experiments, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our method. Furthermore, our approach consistently yields favorable results in both intra-dataset and cross-dataset evaluations, thereby highlighting its excellent generalization capabilities. The superior performance on small datasets further underscores our method’s remarkable ability to handle unseen data beyond the training set.

Stress and strain monitoring is of great significance for wood drying. Using digital image correlation (DIC), this study measured displacement and strain changes during wood drying in real time. The results showed that when wood is dried below the fiber saturation point, the difference of the radial and tangential shrinkage ratio gradually increased. An analysis of tangential and radial shrinkage ratio revealed that in the early stage of drying, the tangential and radial shrinkage ratio was relatively flat; in the middle stage of drying, the shrinkage ratio began to gradually increase; and in the later stage of drying, the tangential shrinkage ratio was approximately twice as large as that in the radial direction. Further, regarding the tangential and radial strain distribution, the radial strain distribution was more scattered than that in the tangential direction. The radial strain distribution exhibited compressive strain on both ends of the specimen, and the tensile strain was in the center. The tangential strain distribution was tensile strain on the left side of the specimen and compression strain on the right. Overall, DIC is stable and reliable, and it can be used to monitor well the stress and strain changes during wood drying.

Corn silk (Zea mays L.) is the stigma of an annual gramineous plant named corn, which is distributed in many regions worldwide and has a long history of medicinal use. In recent years, with the sustainable development of traditional Chinese medicine, studies of corn silk based on modern technologies, such as GC–MS, LC–MS, and other analytical means, have offered more comprehensive analyses. Phytochemistry studies have shown that the main bioactive components in corn silk include flavonoids, polyphenols, phenolic acids, fatty acids, and terpenoids. Pharmacological studies have shown that corn silk extract has various pharmacological effects, such as reducing blood lipids, lowering blood pressure, regulating blood sugar levels, anti-inflammatory effects, and anti-oxidation effects. In this paper, the related research on corn silk from the past few years is summarized to provide a theoretical reference for the further development and utilization of corn silk.

To discover new lead compounds with anti-tumour activities, in the present study, natural diosgenin was hybridised with the reported benzoic acid mustard pharmacophore. The in vitro cytotoxicity of the resulting newly synthesised hybrids (8–10, 14a–14f, and 15a–15f) was then evaluated in three tumour cells (HepG2, MCF-7, and HeLa) as well as normal GES-1 cells. Among them, 14f possessed the most potential anti-proliferative activity against HepG2 cells, with an IC50 value of 2.26 µM, which was 14.4-fold higher than that of diosgenin (IC50 = 32.63 µM). Furthermore, it showed weak cytotoxicity against GES-1 cells (IC50 > 100 µM), thus exhibiting good antiproliferative selectivity between normal and tumour cells. Moreover, 14f could induce G0/G1 arrest and apoptosis of HepG2 cells. From a mechanistic perspective, 14f regulated cell cycle-related proteins (CDK2, CDK4, CDK6, cyclin D1 and cyclin E1) as well mitochondrial apoptosis pathway-related proteins (Bax, Bcl-2, caspase 9, and caspase 3). These findings suggested that hybrid 14f serves as a promising anti-hepatoma lead compound that deserves further research.

IntroductionBracka repair and staged transverse preputial island flap urethroplasty are both significant methods in treating proximal hypospadias. They utilize the flap and graft techniques, respectively, to achieve a satisfactory success rate. This study aimed to compare the outcomes of these 2 methods in the treatment of proximal hypospadias with severe ventral curvature.MethodsWe retrospectively analyzed 117 cases of proximal hypospadias with severe ventral curvature who had undergone either Bracka repair (n = 62) or staged transverse preputial island flap urethroplasty (n = 55). All operations were performed by a single surgeon, and the choice of method was determined by the surgeon's preference based on his experience. Cosmetic outcome was evaluated with Pediatric Penile Perception Score (PPPS). Patients' characteristics including age, penis length, glans diameter, length of the urethral defect and ventral curvature degree, cosmetic outcomes, and complication rates were all compared.ResultsThere was no significant difference in age, penis length, glans diameter, length of the urethral defect, or ventral curvature degree. In the Bracka group, there were 5 patients with fistula, 1 patient with stricture, and 1 case of dehiscence. In the staged transverse preputial island flap urethroplasty group, there were 4 patients with fistula, 1 with stricture, and 2 with diverticulum. The scores of shaft skin and general appearance were consistently higher in the Bracka group than in the staged transverse preputial island flap urethroplasty group. The differences in complication rate and cosmetic outcome were not statistically different (P > 0.05).ConclusionsBracka repair and staged transverse preputial island flap urethroplasty are both satisfactory staged surgical options for proximal hypospadias with severe ventral curvature and have similar complication rates. Bracka repair may create a better appearance, but more studies are needed to confirm this finding. Pediatric surgeons should consider additional factors, such as the patient's specific condition, parents' inclination, and personal experience, rather than safety, to make the best choice between the 2 methods.

Since the outbreak of COVID-19, olfactory dysfunction (OD) has become an important and persistent legacy problem that seriously affects the quality of life. The purpose of this paper is to quantitatively analyze and visualize the current research status and development trend of COVID-19 related OD by using VOSviewer software. Based on the Web of Science database, a total of 1,592 relevant documents were retrieved in January 2023, with publication time spanning from 2020 to 2023. The bibliometric analysis revealed that the most influential research results in the field of COVID-19 related OD were concentrated in journals of related disciplines such as otorhinolaryngology, medicine, general and internal, virology, neurosciences, etc. The knowledge base of the research is mainly formed in two fields: COVID-19 clinical research and OD specialized research. The research hotspots are mainly concentrated in six directions: COVID-19, long COVID, smell, anosmia, OD, and recovery. Based on the results of the bibliometric analysis, the temporal trends of COVID-19 related OD studies were visually revealed, and relevant suggestions for future research were proposed.

Maize is a crucial cereal crop in China, serving both as a staple food and an essential industrial resource. Northern corn leaf blight (NCLB) is a disease of corn caused by a fungus, Exserohilum turcicum (sexual stage Setosphaeria turcica). This study aimed to assess the biocontrol potential of various Trichoderma strains against Exserohilum turcicum 101 in Jilin, China. Through dual culture tests, the Trichoderma strains were categorized into four groups based on their antagonistic abilities. Eleven Trichoderma strains exhibited strong antagonistic behavior, with comparable or faster growth rates than E. turcicum 101. Microscopic observations confirmed that T. asperellum 576 hyphae effectively encircled E. turcicum 101 hyphae, reinforcing their antagonistic behavior. The production of non-volatile and volatile substances by the Trichoderma strains was evaluated, with T. asperellum 576 showing the highest potency in producing non-volatile and volatile substances, leading to an impressive 80.81% and 65.86% inhibition of E. turcicum 101 growth. Remarkably, co-culture suspensions of T. asperellum 576 + E. turcicum 101 and T. atroviride 393 + E. turcicum 101 exhibited strong antifungal activity. Furthermore, the activities of chitinase, β-1.3-glucanase, and cellulase were evaluated using the 3, 5-dinitrosalicylic acid (DNS) method. T. asperellum 576 + E. turcicum 101 displayed stronger cell wall degradation enzyme activity compared to T. atroviride 393 + E. turcicum 101, with values of 8.34 U/mL, 3.42 U/mL, and 7.75 U/mL, respectively. In greenhouse conditions, the application of a 107 spores/mL conidia suspension of T. asperellum 576 significantly enhanced maize seed germination and plant growth while effectively suppressing E. turcicum 101 infection. Maize seedlings inoculated/treated with both E. turcicum 101 and T. asperellum 576 demonstrated substantial improvements compared to those inoculated solely with E. turcicum 101. The T. asperellum 576 treatment involved a 107 spores/mL conidia suspension applied through a combination of foliar spray and soil drench. These findings highlight T. asperellum 576 as a promising biocontrol candidate against northern leaf blight in maize. Its antagonistic behavior, production of inhibitory compounds, and promotion of plant growth all contribute to its potential as an effective biocontrol agent for disease management.

Abstract Background GenoLab M is a recently established next-generation sequencing platform from GeneMind Biosciences. Presently, Illumina sequencers are the globally leading sequencing platform in the next-generation sequencing market. Here, we present the first report to compare the transcriptome and LncRNA sequencing data of the GenoLab M sequencer to NovaSeq 6000 platform in various types of analysis. Results We tested 16 libraries in three species using various library kits from different companies. We compared the data quality, genes expression, alternatively spliced (AS) events, single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP), and insertions–deletions (InDel) between two sequencing platforms. The data suggested that platforms have comparable sensitivity and accuracy in terms of quantification of gene expression levels with technical compatibility. Conclusions Genolab M is a promising next-generation sequencing platform for transcriptomics and LncRNA studies with high performance at low costs.

Landscape patterns significantly affect urban runoff pollution, and a reasonable arrangement of pervious patches in urban catchments is critical to control urban non-point-source pollution. Low impact development (LID) can be recognized as a pervious surface type, and many previous studies have analyzed the LID performance at a system scale. However, the influence of the LID spatial distribution on runoff pollutant transport at a catchment scale remains unclear. This study analyzed the influence of pervious/impervious patterns on runoff pollution within two urban catchments constructed with LID. It was found that the runoff pollution was influenced by the area ratio, circumference, shape, and pervious patch connectivity of pervious surfaces (i.e., LID). Catchments with high perviousness ratios are more efficient in reducing the runoff volume and suspended solids, and LID should focus on removing runoff pollutants at catchments with high imperviousness ratios. Six typical landscape metrics that represented the fragmentation, complexity and vergence of pervious surfaces were selected to investigate the influence of pervious/impervious patterns on runoff pollution. The results show that larger fragmentation, smaller complexity and smaller vergence of pervious patches result in larger runoff volumes and more pollutants. Therefore, it is recommended that large pervious areas should be retained and close to one another to enhance the retention capacity of LID, and the outline of pervious patches should be long and irregular to reduce pollution confluence. The results of this study are helpful in arranging LID structures for efficient runoff regulation and pollution control at an urban catchment scale.

The effects of temperature, salinity, and illumination on the nitrite uptake rate of the microalgae–bacteria consortia of Oocystis borgei and Rhodopseudomonas palustris were investigated. The absorption rates of nitrite and the contribution rate of each component in the consortia under different temperatures (15, 20, 25, 30, 35 °C), illuminations (0, 15, 25, 35, 45 μmol·m−2·s−1), and salinities (0, 5, 15, 25, 35‰) were determined by stable isotope labeling technique. The single and combined effects of three environmental factors on nitrite uptake by the microalgae–bacteria consortia were analyzed using single-factor and orthogonal experiments. The single-factor experiment showed that the microalgae–bacteria consortia could absorb nitrite efficiently when the temperature, salinity, and illumination were 20~30 °C, 0~15‰, and 25~45 μmol·m−2·s−1, respectively, with the highest absorption rates were 2.086, 3.058, and 2.319 μg∙g−1∙h−1, respectively. The orthogonal experiment showed that the most efficient environmental conditions for nitrite uptake were 30 °C, 5‰ salinity, 35 μmol·m−2·s−1 illumination, and the rate of nitrite uptake by the microalgae–bacteria consortia was 3.204 μg∙g−1∙h−1. The results showed that the nitrite uptake rate of the O. borgei–R. palustris consortia was most affected by temperature, followed by salinity, and least by illumination. Under the same conditions, the nitrite absorption capacity of the microalgae–bacteria consortia was greater than that of single bacteria or algae, and R. palustris played a major role in the nitrite absorption of the consortia. The O. borgei and R. palustris consortia still maintain high nitrite absorption efficiency when the environment changes greatly, which has broad application prospects in the regulation and improvement of water quality in shrimp culture.

The digital economy plays an important role in the high-quality development of cities, and low-carbon urban development is an integral part of this evolution. Therefore, it is important to explore the impact of the development of the digital economy on urban carbon emissions. By considering 21 cities in Guangdong Province as the object of the research, this study measured the levels of the digital economy from 2011 to 2019 by using an entropy weight-based TOPSIS model, analyzed the spatiotemporal changes, and used geographically and temporally weighted regression to examine the spatiotemporal heterogeneity of the impact of the digital economy on urban carbon emissions. The results showed the following: (1) The development of the digital economy in Guangdong Province in general exhibited a stable trend of growth, and the average level of its development in the 21 cities considered increased by 3.4 times during the study period. (2) The level of development of the digital economy in the Pearl River Delta was significantly higher than that in northern, western, and eastern Guangdong, with Shenzhen being the most developed city in this regard (0.8473), and Shanwei being the least developed (0.0633). (3) The impact of the development of the digital economy on carbon emissions had significant spatiotemporal heterogeneity. The benefits of the development of the digital economy in terms of a reduction in carbon emissions was the most significant in the Pearl River Delta, and regional differences were prominent. (4) The reductions in carbon emissions in cities with a highly developed digital economy were more significant than has been reported in past studies in the area. However, it had a negative effect on the urban carbon emissions in cities with a poorly developed digital economy. The results of this study can be used to guide policies related to the high-quality development of the urban digital economy.

Abstract Background Stratification analyses have been widely utilized in molecular association meta-analyses to estimate the interaction between genetic and environmental factors or to control for the confounding variables linked to a disease. Two calculation methods utilized in practical research, which are known as the variants of factorial stratification analysis and confounder-controlling stratification analysis in our nomenclature, have been applied in previous studies, but none of which have presented a methodology and application for these analyses. Methods In this paper, these two approaches are integrated and further developed into a standard procedure for stratification analysis. We first propose the advanced statistical methodology and theoretical algorithm of these three types of stratification analysis and then provide two example applications in meta-analyses of molecular association to illustrate the computing processes and interpretation of the results. Results The standard stratification analysis synthesizes the advantages of the first two practical methods, including identifying and controlling confounding moderators or revealing and calculating gene-environment interactions, to efficiently classify the real influence of various investigated factors on a disease in the general population. Additional challenges concerning this method and their potential solutions are also discussed, such as the approach to utilizing only the partially stratified data available in meta-research practice. Conclusions The standard stratification method will be extensively applicable to rapidly expanding future research on the complex relationships among genetics, environment, disease, and other variables.

With their growing popularity and widespread applications, face recognition systems are attracting more attention from attackers. Thus, face presentation attack detection has emerged as an important research topic in recent years. Existing methods for face presentation attack detection are affected by different cameras and display devices, and their performance is degraded in cross-database testing. In this paper, we propose a face presentation attack detection scheme that fuses multi-perspective dynamic features. One feature is the globally extracted temporal motion pattern of a face in a video. This involves mapping the local and global motion information of the face in the video into a single image. The motion patterns of genuine and fake faces are different, and these patterns are independent of cameras and display devices. Another feature is the visual rhythm of noise patterns, which differs significantly between single and secondary imaging. The proposed scheme fuses these two features at the decision level. Cross-database tests were conducted among the CASIA-FASD, MSU-MFSD and Replay-Attack databases. The experimental results show that the proposed scheme outperforms state-of-the-art algorithms.

Due to the existence of unfavorable factors such as turbid water quality and target occlusion, it is difficult to obtain valid data of target features. Due to the repeated calculation of similar data, the real-time performance of the algorithm is poor. In view of the above problems, this paper proposes a multi-AUV collaborative target recognition method based on transfer-reinforcement learning. The features of the target information which is collected by multi-AUV are fused based on wavelet transformation and affine invariance. The similarity of features is calculated by Mahalanobis distance and the learning model is selected autonomously based on the similarity threshold. Based on the Q-learning reinforcement learning model, the target information under the interference environment is trained intensively, and the effective features are extracted and stored in the source domain, which can reduce the impact of the environmental interference on the target recognition. The feature transfer learning model based on deep confidence network transfers the feature data of the source domain to the target domain, reducing the repeated calculation of similar data, and then ensuring the real-time performance of the algorithm. Simulation experiments are conducted in the SUN dataset under five underwater environments (turbid water, target occlusion, insufficient light, complex background, and overlapping targets), and the results demonstrate that the proposed model achieves better performance.

This paper takes the surrounding rock of deep tunnel as the research object and considers the action mechanism under the influence of seepage. Based on the Mohr-Coulomb criterion, the stress mechanism of surrounding rock of deep buried tunnel is analyzed by a convergence constraint method. Based on the elastic-plastic solution, the nonlinear elastic-plastic solution of the interaction between surrounding rock and lining structure considering the effect of seepage force is proposed, and the radius of surrounding rock plastic zone is obtained. The relationship between surrounding rock stress and displacement, radial deformation of lining, and support reaction force was observed. At the same time, considering the effects of seepage, strain softening, and intermediate principal stress, the surrounding rock is divided into a plastic residual zone, plastic softening zone, and elastic zone, and the stress distribution expressions of the plastic zone and each zone of surrounding rock of circular tunnel are derived. The results show that with the change of nonuniform permeability coefficient, the seepage shows anisotropy in different directions, and the closer to the horizontal or vertical direction, the more obvious the influence of nonuniform permeability coefficient on pore water pressure distribution. Seepage and material softening have different effects on the distribution of surrounding rock stress field and the size of plastic zone. Material softening is more unfavorable to the stability of surrounding rock than seepage. The intermediate principal stress coefficient has a significant impact on the tangential stress and plastic zone of surrounding rock. When the intermediate principal stress effect is not considered, the calculation results are relatively conservative and cannot give full play to the strength of surrounding rock effectively. The research conclusion can provide a theoretical reference for studying the stability of surrounding rock in tunnel excavation under water-bearing rock.

In order to better study the creep deformation characteristics of rock under different stresses, the generalized Burgers model was used as the basic model after analyzing the creep characteristics of rock and its relationship with stress and strain, and its application scope was verified. Based on the damage mechanics theory, a viscoplastic body considering aging damage was established, which was connected with the generalized Burgers model in series. A new nonlinear creep constitutive model was obtained, which was extended to three dimensions. In addition, the relationship between model parameters and damage variables was established by introducing damage variables that considered damage effects. The unsteady creep constitutive model of rock is obtained, and the correctness and rationality of the model are verified by test data. The results show that this model not only accurately reflects the creep characteristics of attenuation and steady creep stage but also overcomes the defect that the generalized Burgers model is difficult to describe the accelerated creep. Considering the deterioration of creep parameters with time, the creep damage process of rock under different stress states can be better described, which provides a new idea for establishing unsteady creep model and determining model parameters.

Complicated underwater environments, such as occlusion by foreign objects and dim light, causes serious loss of underwater targets feature. Furthermore, underwater ripples cause target deformation, which greatly increases the difficulty of feature extraction. Then, existing image reconstruction models cannot effectively achieve target reconstruction due to insufficient underwater target features, and there is a blurred texture in the reconstructed area. To solve the above problems, a fine reconstruction of underwater images with the target feature missing from the environment feature was proposed. Firstly, the salient features of underwater images are obtained in terms of positive and negative sample learning. Secondly, a layered environmental attention mechanism is proposed to retrieve the relevant local and global features in the context. Finally, a coarse-to-fine image reconstruction model, with gradient penalty constraints, is constructed to obtain the fine restoration results. Contrast experiment between the proposed algorithm and the existing image reconstruction methods has been done in stereo quantitative underwater image data set, real-world underwater image enhancement data set, and underwater image data set, clearly proving that the proposed one is more effective and superior.

Ent-abietane diterpenoids are the main active constituents of Euphorbia fischeriana. In the continuing search for new anti-breast cancer drugs, 11 ent-abietane diterpenoids (1–11) were isolated from E. fischeriana. The structures of these compounds were clearly elucidated on the basis of 1D and 2D NMR spectra as well as HRESIMS data. Among them, compound 1 was a novel compound, compound 10 was isolated from Euphorbia genus for the first time, compound 11 was firstly discovered from E. fischeriana. These compounds exhibited varying degrees of growth inhibition against the MCF-10A, MCF-7, ZR-75-1 and MDA-MB-231 cell lines in vitro. The experimental data obtained permit us to identify the roles of the epoxy group, hydroxyl group and acetoxyl group on their cytotoxic activities. Extraction is an important means for the isolation, identification, and application of valuable compounds from natural plants. To maximize yields of ent-abietane diterpenoids of E. fischeriana, 17-hydroxyjolkinolide B, jolkinolide B, 17-hydroxyjolkinolide A and jolkinolide A were selected as quality controls to optimize the salting-out-assisted liquid–liquid extraction (SALLE) by response surface methodology (RSM). The optimized conditions for SALLE were 0.47 g sodium dihydrogen phosphate, 5.5 mL acetonitrile and 4.5 mL water at pH 7.5. The experimental values of 17-hydroxyjolkinolide B, jolkinolide B, 17-hydroxyjolkinolide A and jolkinolide A (2.134, 0.529, 0.396, and 0.148 mg/g, respectively) were in agreement with the predicted values, thus demonstrating the appropriateness of the model.

Studying drug relationships can provide deeper information for the construction and maintenance of biomedical databases and provide more important references for disease treatment and drug development. The research model has expanded from the previous focus on a certain drug to the systematic analysis of the pharmaceutical network formed between drugs. Network model is suitable for the study of the nonlinear relationship of the pharmaceutical relationship by modeling the data learning. Association rule mining is used to find the potential correlations between the various sets of massive data. Therefore, based on the network model, this research proposed an algorithm for drug interaction under improved association rules, which achieved accurate analysis and decision-making of drug relationship. Meanwhile, this research applied the established association rule algorithm to discuss the relationship between Chinese medicine and mental illness medicine and conducted the algorithm research and simulation analysis of the association relationship. The results showed the association rule algorithm based on the network model constructed was better than other association algorithms. It had reliability and superiority in decision-making in improving the drug-drug relationship. It also promoted the rational use of medicines and played a guiding role in pharmaceutical research. This provides scientific research personnel with research basis and research ideas for disease-related diagnosis.

Lining is often used as the last line of defense in deep large section chamber. Under the asymmetric load, it is easy to damage, resulting in the overall repair of the chamber. Aiming at this problem, taking the pump house in Wanfu Coal Mine under construction in China as an engineering example, we analyzed the asymmetric failure of pump house lining caused by construction disturbance, established the lining mechanical model and quantitative evaluation indexes, such as bending moment change rate, bending moment balance rate, displacement change rate and displacement balance rate, studied the influence mechanism of asymmetrical coefficient, section size and lining thickness on the mechanical behavior of lining, and proposed the control measures of deep large section chamber with the core of “strengthening asymmetric support, reducing section size and improving lining strength”. The field monitoring shows that the asymmetric deformation of the pump house is effectively controlled, and the maximum displacement is only 7.3 mm, which ensures the long-term stability of the chamber.

With the increase in applications of face verification, increasing attention has been paid to their accuracy and security. To ensure both the accuracy and safety of these systems, this paper proposes an encrypted face-verification system. In this paper, face features are extracted using deep neural networks and then encrypted with the Paillier algorithm and saved in a data set. The framework of the whole system involves three parties: the client, data server, and verification server. The data server saves the encrypted user features and user ID, the verification server performs verification, and the client is responsible for collecting a requester's information and sending it to the servers. The information is transmitted among parties as cipher text, which means that no parties know the private keys except for the verification server. The proposed scheme is tested with two deep convolutional neural networks architectures on the labeled faces in the Wild and Faces94 data sets. The extensive experimental results, including results for identification and verification tasks, show that our approach can enhance the security of a recognition system with little decrease in accuracy. Therefore, the proposed system is efficient with respect to both the security and high verification accuracy.

Astragalus mongholicus (MG) and Astragalus membranaceus (MJ), both generally known as Huangqi in China, are two perennial herbals widely used in variety diseases. However, there were still some differences in the chemical ingredients between MG and MJ. In this paper, metabolomics combined with the ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled with electrospray ionization/quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UHPLC-ESI-Q-TOF-MS/MS) was employed to contrastively analyze the chemical constituents between MG and MJ. As a result, principal component analysis showed that MG and MJ were separated clearly. A total of 53 chemical markers were successfully identified for the discrimination of MG and MJ. Of them, the contents of 36 components including Astragaloside I~III, Astragaloside IV, Agroastragaloside I, etc. in MJ were significantly higher than those in MG. On the contrary, the contents of 17 other components including coumaric acid, formononetin, sophoricoside, etc. in MG were obviously higher than those in MJ. The results showed that the distinctive constituents in MG and MJ were remarkable, and MJ may own stronger pharmacological activities than MG. In a word, MG and MJ may be treated as two different herbs. This paper demonstrated that metabolomics was a vitally credible technology to rapidly screen the characteristic chemical composition of traditional Chinese medicine.

Inspired by the significant bioactivity of ergosterol peroxide, we designed and synthesized four fluorescent coumarin and ergosterol peroxide conjugates 8a−d through the combination of ergosterol peroxide with 7-N,N-diethylamino coumarins fluorophore. The cytotoxicity of synthesized conjugates against three human cancer cells (HepG2, SK-Hep1, and MCF-7) was evaluated. The results of fluorescent imaging showed that the synthesized conjugates 8a−d localized and enriched mainly in mitochondria, leading to significantly enhanced cytotoxicity over ergosterol peroxide. Furthermore, the results of biological functions of 8d showed that it could suppress cell colony formation, invasion, and migration; induce G2/M phase arrest of HepG2 cells, and increase the intracellular ROS level.

Stainless steel wire mesh supported molecularly imprinted composite membranes for selective separation of Ebracteolata Compound B (ECB) were prepared based on surface polymerization using ECB separated from Euphorbia fischeriana as a template, acrylamide as a functional monomer, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as a cross-linker, azodiisobutyronitrile as an initiator, and stainless steel wire mesh as support. Structure and purity of ECB were characterized by nuclear magenetic resonance (1H-NMR, 13C-NMR) and ultra high performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC). The molecularly imprinted composite membranes were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The membrane adsorbed on the ECB reached equilibrium about 30 min later, with a maximum adsorption amount of 3.39 μmol/cm2. Adsorption behavior between ECB and the molecularly imprinted composite membranes followed pseudo-second-order kinetics equation and Freundlich isotherm model. The molecularly imprinted composite membranes that could selectively identify and transport ECB in similar structures have a permeation rate of 38.71% to ECB. The ECB content in the permeation solution derived from the extract of Euphorbia fischeriana through the imprinted membrane was 87%. Overall, the obtained results demonstrated that an efficient approach with the molecularly imprinted composite membranes for selective separation of ECB from Euphorbia fischeriana.
