Addressing pressing contextual issues related to settlements near world heritage sites is imperative. Preserving a settlement's unique identity and maintaining a sense of place and cultural sustainability in the area is crucial. This paper aims to explore the contextuality of Borobudur Temple and examine how the existing conditions support its contextuality. Our research focuses on the roof styles and motifs of the area, and we interpret contextuality through relief readings. To assess the contextual factors of the existing buildings along the Balaputeradewa corridor, we used matrix analysis and concluded how the context of recent buildings affects the area. Our findings indicate that variations in roof styles and motifs are crucial considerations for cultural sustainability. While some existing buildings reflect these findings, others are out of context. Moreover, some contexts in relief are outside the research area. These findings can be utilized to develop strategies for cultural sustainability in both rural and urban areas, especially in maintaining the area's sense of place. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pesantren (Islamic Boarding School! is an indigenous educational institution originally from Indonesia and perhaps a unique form of the traditional Islamic education system and spreading to Southeast Asia that neighbouring countries. However, studies on pesantren rarely address physical elements and architecture. Learning pesantren architecture challenges us with representation: definition, how to visualize its form and program, and the design. Finding a body of knowledge on pesantren to excavate "architectural features" is important to study its prospect in architectural terms. This paper attempts to analyze pesantren from the architectural perspective, focusing on the specific feature and finding its current issues, challenges, and prospects for the design framework. Two combination research methods were used: Systematic literature review and case study. A systematic literature review was conducted in the first stage to map the distinctive spatial quality of pesantren. In the second stage, three case studies were conducted to report and analyze the current issues, challenges, and prospects for the design framework. The research shows that the variety of physical conditions is the main current issue of pesantren. The main challenge is the shortage of financial availability while the spatial need to cater to population and development is more increasing. Many houses around Mlangi Muslim settlement refer to the historical aspect of settlement in its spatial layout as the Moslem settlements. Mlangi well known as Kampung Santri - village with many of Islamic Boarding Schools (Pondok Pesantren in Indonesia term) where students live in there- since 1920an. This paper will describe how the spatial value of local houses around Islamic Boarding Schools in Mlangi Moslem settlements. The naturalistic-phenomenology method was the research method for data collection. Data got from subsequent interview after the appearance theme from one research object to the next. Any argument that correlated with the spatial value grouped as the same theme and analyzed as the substantive concept about the spatial value in the houses. The room layout from each home drawn one by one as the existing condition and the value of the room got from the comments of the owner. Cross-checking information technic from the members in the house helped the research to mention many spatial values in-house and then conclude as the room concept and its correlation to the stigma as the Kampung Santri and Moslem Settlements. It also compares the similarity of the indoor room layout and zone in Pondok Pesantren. From existing condition and interviews found that all the houses have the similar function and room layout with the Pondok Pesantren around it. 6 observed houses and 15 interviewed owners stated that they want to make their house as the places and spaces for teaching holy Al Qur'an same like in Pondok Pesantren. That is like a dream come true if a house can hold any recitation and teach holy Al Qur'an and Islamic Knowledge to the neighbor. From this condition, researchers conclude that there is close relation about the significance building in one settlement to their neighbor building, not only in the activity in each house but also in room layout and zone. Religious value and people understanding and dream about the ideal space even get impact from it.

Contextuality is one of the main issues in urban architectural design. The addition of new non-context construction is likely to reduce the urbanized features. An infill design is needed as one of the maintenance strategies. This strategy is found to focus more on the heritage buildings unobserved in ordinary architecture. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the contextualization of designs in an urban setting, using the infill architecture strategy. A semisystematic literature review was used through the exploration of Google Scholar and ScienceDirect within the last five years, where 30 articles were found and analytically explored to determine the main elements and methods of infill architecture. The results showed that this strategy was based on material and details, form, scale, place, position, and usage. Besides the maintenance of contextuality, innovation was also observed through a creative combination of building elements and infill methods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
