The Japan Surveillance for Infection Prevention and Healthcare Epidemiology (J-SIPHE) system aggregates information related to antimicrobial resistance (AMR) measures in participating medical institutions nationwide and is intended to be used for promotion of AMR measures in participating facilities and their communities. This multicenter study aimed to determine the usefulness of the J-SIPHE system for evaluating the correlation between antibiotic use and antibiotic resistance in Hokkaido, Japan.Data on antibiotic use and detection rate of major resistant Gram-negative bacteria at 19 hospitals in 2020 were collected from the J-SIPHE system, and data correlations were analyzed using JMP Pro.The detection rate of carbapenem-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa was significantly positively correlated with carbapenem use (Spearman's ρ = 0.551; P = .015). There were significant positive correlations between the detection rate of fluoroquinolone-resistant Escherichia coli and the use of piperacillin/tazobactam, carbapenems, and quinolones [ρ = 0.518 (P = .023), ρ = 0.76 (P.001), and ρ = 0.502 (P = .029), respectively].This is the first multicenter study to investigate the correlation between antibiotic use and antibiotic resistance using the J-SIPHE system. The results suggest that using this system may be beneficial for promoting AMR measures.

To prevent the progression of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), early detection and intervention are important. Several studies have already shown that the serum adiponectin level could be useful for evaluating the future risk of T2DM. Recently, plasma free amino acid (PFAA) concentrations have also emerged as potential biomarkers that predict the future onset of T2DM. In this study, we aimed to further characterise PFAA profiles by elucidating the association with the serum high molecular weight (HMW) adiponectin level in this cross-sectional study. A total of 1000 Japanese subjects who underwent medical check-ups were enrolled, and their plasma concentrations of 21 amino acids and clinical parameters were measured. The subjects without T2DM were divided into quartiles (Q1-4) by serum HMW adiponectin level, and the association with between PFAA concentrations was analysed. Concentrations of glutamate, alanine, proline, tyrosine, histidine, methionine, lysine, branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) and tryptophan varied significantly according to the adiponectin quartile. Furthermore, serum adiponectin levels showed significant inverse correlations with these amino acids. The change in the PFAA profile in the group with the lowest adiponectin concentrations (Q1) was similar to that of T2DM patients. Although both adiponectin levels and PFAA concentrations are known to be altered by the accumulation of visceral fat and insulin resistance, the levels of glutamate, BCAA, lysine and tryptophan remain significantly associated with adiponectin level after adjustment for age, body mass index and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance, showing the direct association between PFAA concentrations and the serum HMW adiponectin level. Non‑alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is a pathological condition of the liver in which hepatocyte steatosis, invasion of inflammatory cells and hepatic injury occur without alcohol abuse. Despite the known risk of liver cancer and liver fibrosis that may progress to liver cirrhosis that exists with NASH, an understanding of related gene expression and associated functional changes remains insufficient. The present study used a mouse model of NASH induced by a high‑fat diet to examine gene expression in the liver and to search for transcripts that could predict early liver fibrosis in the future. Mice fed a high‑fat diet for 2 weeks showed typical NASH liver histology by hematoxylin and eosin staining, and increased fibrosis was confirmed by Sirius red staining after 6 weeks. Functional changes associated with liver damage, liver inflammation, liver steatosis and liver fibrosis were predicted by toxicological ontology analysis using Ingenuity Pathways Analysis. Cavernous malformation (CM) is the second most common cerebral vascular malformation and is often found incidentally. Their natural history is usually benign, however, patients with CM who present with symptomatic hemorrhage may later follow a serious clinical course if left untreated. The risk of hemorrhage is associated with previous hemorrhage, lesion location (infratentorial and deep), and the presence of associated developmental venous anomaly (DVA). Histopathological specimens also indicate that coexistence of DVA and other vascular malformations may be associated with hemorrhage owing to CMs. Diagnosing CMs is difficult, even in patients who initially present with symptomatic hemorrhage. Computed tomography scans typically reveal a hemorrhagic CM as a nonspecific heterogenous mass of high density, which may not be misdiagnosed as a solitary hematoma, especially when located in the infratentorial region. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrates internal loculation with mixed-signal intensities typical for CMs, although this may be partially or completely masked by acute hemorrhage. Susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI) reveals a significant "blooming" effect of hemosiderin deposition. Three-dimensional postcontrast T1-weighted imaging is essential to identify associated DVAs, and this is important for both diagnosis and planning of surgical treatment. Contrast-enhanced MRI should be performed to diagnose hemorrhagic CMs and differentiate them from spontaneous solitary hematoma or hemorrhagic tumors.

Recent studies have shown that several types of cheese contain kokumi γ-glutamyl dipeptides, and the kokumi tripeptide, γ-glutamyl-valyl-glycine (γ-Glu-Val-Gly), is a component of various fermented foods. The quantification of γ-Glu-Val-Gly in various types of cheese was herein conducted by HPLC-tandem mass spectrometry followed by derivatization with 6-aminoquinoyl-N-hydroxysuccinimidyl-carbamate. The γ-Glu-Val-Gly concentrations were between 0.35 and 0.59 μg/g in cheese made from ewe milk, but were not detected in cheese made from cow milk. The amino acid sequences of major milk proteins showed that the β-caseins of sheep had the Val-Gly sequence at the 9-10 position, whereas β-caseins of cows contained a Pro-Gly sequence at the same position. The Val-Gly sequence was absent in other caseins of sheep and cattle. These results suggest that the different γ-Glu-Val-Gly concentrations present in cheese made from cow and ewe milk are due to differences in the amino acid sequences of caseins.

The Ciona intestinalis larva has two distinct photoreceptor organs, a conventional pigmented ocellus and a nonpigmented ocellus, that are asymmetrically situated in the brain. The ciliary photoreceptor cells of these ocelli resemble visual cells of the vertebrate retina. Precise elucidation of the lineage of the photoreceptor cells will be key to understanding the developmental mechanisms of these cells as well as the evolutionary relationships between the photoreceptor organs of ascidians and vertebrates. Photoreceptor cells of the pigmented ocellus have been thought to develop from anterior animal (a-lineage) blastomeres, whereas the developmental origin of the nonpigmented ocellus has not been determined. Here, we show that the photoreceptor cells of both ocelli develop from the right anterior vegetal hemisphere: those of the pigmented ocellus from the right A9.14 cell and those of the nonpigmented ocellus from the right A9.16 cell. The pigmented ocellus is formed by a combination of two lineages of cells with distinct embryonic origins: the photoreceptor cells originate from a medial portion of the A-lineage neural plate, while the pigment cell originates from the lateral edge of the a-lineage neural plate. In light of the recently proposed close evolutionary relationship between the ocellus pigment cell of ascidians and the cephalic neural crest of vertebrates, the ascidian ocellus may represent a prototypic contribution of the neural crest to a cranial sensory organ.

The objectives of this study were to describe a case of osteoid osteoma arising from the temporal bone manifesting only as first bite syndrome as the sole clinical symptom, to perform a meta-analysis of previously reported cases, and to differentiate the clinical characteristics of osteoid osteoma from those of osteoblastoma arising from the temporal bone. In addition to our case, articles addressing osteoid osteoma or osteoblastoma arising from the temporal bone were selected using PubMed, Embase, and the Japan Medical Abstracts Society database (1954 through 2014), with no language preference. The database was searched using the keywords [“osteoid osteoma” OR “osteoblastoma” AND “temporal bone”]. After critical review of 88 studies, 10 cases of osteoid osteoma and 29 cases of osteoblastoma were selected; therefore, including the present case, a total of 40 cases were eligible for qualitative analyses. The mean size of osteoid osteoma was 1.2 cm, which was significantly smaller than that of osteoblastoma (5.1 cm). Radiologically, osteoid osteoma was associated with a lower prevalence of extension into more than two anatomically categorized spaces in comparison with osteoblastoma (P < 0.01). Again, a lower prevalence of erosion of the outer and/or inner tables of the skull in the osteoid osteoma cases was noted (P < 0.05). Conversely, there were no significant differences in the prevalence of representative clinical symptoms, including pain and swelling. According to the present systematic review, osteoid osteoma and osteoblastoma are clinically uniform other than their size or extension.

Previous studies have consistently reported an association between circulating levels of branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) or adipokines and insulin resistance; however, the association between BCAA and adipokine levels remains to be clarified. In this cross-sectional study involving 678 participants (435 men) without diabetes, plasma BCAA (valine, leucine, and isoleucine), adipokine (total and high molecular weight [HMW] adiponectin, leptin, and tumor necrosis factor-α [TNF-α]) concentrations, and an updated homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA2-IR) were measured. The association between the concentrations of total BCAAs and adipokines was adjusted for confounding factors, including body mass index. SUMMARY PIWI-interacting RNA (piRNA) biogenesis consists of two sequential steps: primary piRNA processing and the ping-pong cycle that depends on reciprocal Slicer-mediated RNA cleavage by PIWI proteins. However, the molecular functions of the factors involved remain elusive. Here, we show that RNAs cleaved by a Bombyx mori PIWI, Siwi, remain bound to the protein upon cleavage but are released by a DEAD box protein BmVasa. BmVasa copurifies with Siwi but not another PIWI BmAgo3. A lack of BmVasa does not affect primary piRNA processing but abolishes the ping-pong cycle. Siwi also forms a complex with BmSpn-E and BmQin. This complex is physically separable from the Siwi/BmVasa complex. BmSpn-E, unlike BmVasa, is necessary for primary piRNA production. We propose a model for piRNA biogenesis, where the BmSpn-E/BmQin dimer binds Siwi to function in primary piRNA processing, whereas BmVasa, by associating with Siwi, ensures target RNA release upon cleavage to facilitate the ping-pong cycle.

About-face for citrate synthase Classically, it is thought that citrate synthase only works in one direction: to catalyze the production of citrate from acetyl coenzyme A and oxaloacetate in the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle. The TCA cycle can run in reverse to cleave citrate and fix carbon dioxide autotrophically, but this was thought to occur only with alternative enzymes, such as citrate lyase. Now Nunoura et al. and Mall et al. have discovered thermophilic bacteria with highly efficient and reversible citrate synthase that requires reduced ferredoxin (see the Perspective by Ragsdale). This function is undetectable by metagenomics, but classical biochemistry filled in the gaps seen between the genome sequences and the phenotypes of the organisms. The direction of catalysis depends on the availability of organic versus inorganic carbon and reflects a flexible bet-hedging strategy for survival in fluctuating environments. In evolutionary terms, this capacity might predate the classical TCA cycle and is likely to occur in a wide range of anaerobic microorganisms. Science , this issue p. 559 , p. 563 ; see also p. 517

Recent studies have demonstrated that kokumi substances, such as glutathione, are perceived through the calcium-sensing receptor (CaSR), and screening by CaSR assay and sensory evaluation has shown that γ-glutamyl-valyl-glycine (γ-Glu-Val-Gly) is a potent kokumi peptide. In this study, the contents of γ-Glu-Val-Gly in six commercial brands of dark-coloured soy sauces, two brands of light-coloured soy sauce, and one brand of white soy sauce, were investigated by high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS), followed by derivatization with 6-aminoquinoyl-N-hydroxysuccinimidyl-carbamate (AQC). The analyses indicated that γ-Glu-Val-Gly was present in all investigated soy sauces at concentrations ranging from 0.15 to 0.61mg/dl, demonstrating that it is widely distributed in soy sauces.

We present a sensitivity-boosting technique by incorporating an avalanche photodiode into a normal photo-conversion region. Under a dark scene, an avalanche photodiode operation is selected, where the photo-electrons are multiplied up to 105 electrons. Under a bright scene, a photodiode operation is selected, where photo-electrons in proportional to light intensity are generated in a similar way to conventional CMOS image sensors. Alternating the two operations enables wide operational range extending to dark conditions.

Awamori is a traditional distilled beverage made from steamed Thai-Indica rice in Okinawa, Japan. For brewing the liquor, two microbes, local kuro (black) koji mold Aspergillus luchuensis and awamori yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae are involved. In contrast, that yeasts are used for ethanol fermentation throughout the world, a characteristic of Japanese fermentation industries is the use of Aspergillus molds as a source of enzymes for the maceration and saccharification of raw materials. Here we report the draft genome of a kuro (black) koji mold, A. luchuensis NBRC 4314 (RIB 2604). The total length of nonredundant sequences was nearly 34.7 Mb, comprising approximately 2,300 contigs with 16 telomere-like sequences. In total, 11,691 genes were predicted to encode proteins. Most of the housekeeping genes, such as transcription factors and N-and O-glycosylation system, were conserved with respect to Aspergillus niger and Aspergillus oryzae. An alternative oxidase and acid-stable α-amylase regarding citric acid production and fermentation at a low pH as well as a unique glutamic peptidase were also found in the genome. Furthermore, key biosynthetic gene clusters of ochratoxin A and fumonisin B were absent when compared with A. niger genome, showing the safety of A. luchuensis for food and beverage production. This genome information will facilitate not only comparative genomics with industrial kuro-koji molds, but also molecular breeding of the molds in improvements of awamori fermentation.

The analyses revealed γ-Glu-Val-Gly at concentrations ranging from 0.04 to 1.26 mg/dL, indicating that γ-Glu-Val-Gly is widely distributed among various commercial fish sauces.

Carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1 (CPT1), catalyzing the transfer of the acyl group from acyl-CoA to carnitine to form acylcarnitine, is located at the outer mitochondrial membrane. Because it is easily inactivated by solubilization, expression systems using living cells are essential for its functional characterization. COS7 cells or yeast cells are often utilized for this purpose; however, the advantages/disadvantages of the use of these cells or the question as to how the CPT1 enzyme expressed by these cells differs are still uncertain. In this study, we characterized the heart/muscle-type isozyme of rat CPT1 (CPT1b) expressed by these two cellular expression systems. The mitochondrial fraction prepared from yeast cells expressing CPT1b showed 25% higher CPT1 activity than that obtained from COS7 cells. However, the expression level of CPT1b in the former was 3.8 times lower than that in the latter; and thus, under the present experimental conditions, the specific activity of CPT1b expressed in yeast cells was estimated to be approximately five times higher than that expressed in COS7 cells. Possible reasons for this difference are discussed.

Understanding the hemoglobin switching regulation mechanism in extremely premature infants is particularly important for understanding the extrauterine adaptation of the infants. In this study, we sought to identify factors influencing oxygen affinity in fetal blood and neonatal blood and obtained these results. (1) Aging is required for hemoglobin switching. (2) Switching in premature infants (27 to 32 weeks) is delayed at least 3 weeks in comparison with full-term infants. (3) A delay in the switching of fetal hemoglobin to adult hemoglobin was confirmed in IUGR (intrauterine growth retardation) infants. However, there is a compensatory increase in 2, 3-DPG for adaptation after birth. (4) A delay in 2, 3-DPG increase was observed in RDS (respiratory distress syndrome) infants, and oxygen affinity remained high.

A cDNA clone coding for the collagen type IV alpha1 chain was obtained from the ovary of the medaka, Oryzias latipes. The clone encoded a protein of 1639 amino acids including a putative 21-residue signal peptide, and the deduced amino acid sequence of the alpha1 chain was homologous to those of the proteins from other species. The mRNA of the collagen type IV alpha1 chain was expressed in various tissues of the adult fish. In situ hybridization analysis revealed that the alpha1 chain mRNA was localized in the follicle layer of all growing follicles. In the post-ovulatory follicle that had released its oocyte during ovulation, the alpha1 chain transcript was detected in a winding line surrounding the tissue. This localization pattern was different from that of gelatinase B, a marker gene for granulosa cells. A specific antibody was prepared for the medaka collagen type IV alpha1 chain. Immunohistochemical analysis with this antibody yielded results consistent with those obtained by in situ hybridization. These data indicate that, in the medaka ovary, collagen type IV is synthesized by theca cells and is localized in the basement membrane.

Seven bis(L-tartrato)-bridged dinuclear metal complexes with 2,2′-bipyridine (bpy) or 1,10-phenanthroline (phen), [ (L-tartH)2(bpy or phen)2] · 4H2O (M = Fe, Mn) or [ (L-tartH2)2(bpy or phen)2] · nH2O (M = Ni, Co, Cu), where L-tart4− is C4H2 , were synthesized and characterized by the elemental analysis and ESI-mass spectra or powder X-ray patterns. These are the first examples of discrete dinuclear complexes with bpy or phen except for Cr(III) complexes. The protonation of the hydroxyls of the coordinated tartrate systematically changes with the variation of the metal ionic radii, the smaller ionic radii of the central metal, the smaller number of the protons in the hydroxyl groups of the bridging tartrates. The magnetic properties are discussed in connection to analogous Cr(III), Cu(II), and V(IV)O complexes.

Prevalence of these viruses increased during the 2008–09 season., To monitor oseltamivir-resistant influenza viruses A (H1N1) (ORVs) with H275Y in neuraminidase (NA) in Japan during 2 influenza seasons, we analyzed 3,216 clinical samples by NA sequencing and/or NA inhibition assay. The total frequency of ORVs was 2.6% (45/1,734) during the 2007–08 season and 99.7% (1,477/1,482) during the 2008–09 season, indicating a marked increase in ORVs in Japan during 1 influenza season. The NA gene of ORVs in the 2007–08 season fell into 2 distinct lineages by D354G substitution, whereas that of ORVs in the 2008–09 season fell into 1 lineage. NA inhibition assay and M2 sequencing showed that almost all the ORVs were sensitive to zanamivir and amantadine. The hemagglutination inhibition test showed that ORVs were antigenetically similar to the 2008–09 vaccine strain A/Brisbane/59/2007. Our data indicate that the current vaccine or zanamivir and amantadine are effective against recent ORVs, but continuous surveillance remains necessary.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Early accurate diagnosis of brain metastases is crucial for a patient's prognosis. This study aimed to compare the conspicuity and detectability of small brain metastases between contrast-enhanced 3D fast spin-echo (sampling perfection with application-optimized contrasts by using different flip angle evolutions [SPACE]) and 3D gradient-echo (GE) T1-weighted (magnetization-prepared rapid acquisition of GE [MPRAGE]) images at 3T. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty-nine consecutive patients with suspected brain metastases were evaluated prospectively by using SPACE and MPRAGE on a 3T MR imaging system. After careful evaluation by 2 experienced neuroradiologists, 92 lesions from 16 patients were selected as brain metastases. We compared the shorter diameter, contrast rate (CR), and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) of each lesion. Diagnostic ability was compared by using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis. Ten radiologists (5 neuroradiologists and 5 residents) participated in the reading. RESULTS: The mean diameter was significantly larger by using SPACE than MPRAGE (mean, 4.5 ± 3.7 versus 4.3 ± 3.7 mm, P = .0014). The CR and CNR of SPACE (mean, 57.3 ± 47.4%, 3.0 ± 1.9, respectively) were significantly higher than those of MPRAGE (mean, 37.9 ± 41.2%, 2.6 ± 2.2; P < .0001, P = .04). The mean area under the ROC curve was significantly larger with SPACE than with MPRAGE (neuroradiologists, 0.99 versus 0.88, P = .013; residents, 0.99 versus 0.78, P = .0001). CONCLUSIONS: Lesion detectability was significantly higher on SPACE than on MPRAGE, irrespective of the experience of the reader in neuroradiology. SPACE should be a promising diagnostic technique for assessing brain metastases.

We compared Canadian computed tomography (CT) head rule (CCHR) and New Orleans Criteria (NOC) in predicting important CT findings in patients with mild traumatic brain injury (TBI). We included 142 consecutive patients with mild TBI [Glasgow coma scale (GCS) 13–15] who showed at least one of the risk factors stated in the CCHR or the NOC. We introduced two scores: a Canadian from the CCHR and a New Orleans from the NOC. A patient’s score represented a sum of the number of positive items. We examined the relationship between scores or items and the presence of important CT findings. Only the Canadian was significantly associated with important CT findings in multivariate analyses and showed higher area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) either in all 142 patients (GCS 13–15: P = 0.0130; AUC = 0.69) or in the 67 with a GCS = 15 (P = 0.0128, AUC = 0.73). We demonstrate a stacked complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) image sensor overlaid with a chlorine (Cl)-doped crystalline selenium (c-Se) photoconversion layer. The size of the polycrystalline particles (grains) of c-Se, which is strongly related to dark current pattern noise, is controlled by Cl doping to c-Se; hence, the resulting device provides clear images. Furthermore, avalanche multiplication was successfully observed in a Cl-doped c-Se film fabricated on a glass substrate at a relatively low applied voltage.

Background Hemimegalencephaly is a rare hamartomatous entity characterised by enlargement of all or part of the cerebral hemisphere ipsilaterally with cortical dysgenesis, large lateral ventricle and white matter hypertrophy with or without advanced myelination. Although conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is useful for detecting these diagnostic features, hemimegalencephaly is not always easily distinguished from other entities, especially when hemimegalencephaly shows blurring between the grey and white matter. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is a functional MRI technique commonly used to assess the integrity of white matter. The usefulness of DTI in assessing hemimegalencephaly has not been fully elucidated. In this study, we clarified the characteristics of hemimegalencephaly with regard to DTI and its parameters including fractional anisotropy and apparent diffusion coefficient. Methods Three patients with hemimegalencephaly underwent MRI including DTI. We first visually compared fractional anisotropy mapping and conventional MRI. Next, we quantitatively measured the fractional anisotropy and apparent diffusion coefficient values in the subcortical white matter of the hemisphere with hemimegalencephaly and corresponding normal-appearing contralateral regions and analysed the values using the Mann–Whitney U test. Results On fractional anisotropy mapping, we could clearly distinguish the junction of grey and white matter and observed thicker white matter in the hemisphere with hemimegalencephaly, which was unclear on conventional MRI. The white matter in the hemisphere with hemimegalencephaly showed significantly higher fractional anisotropy ( P Conclusion DTI parameters showed salient hemimegalencephaly features and could be useful in its assessment.

症例の概要: 患者は27歳の男性で, 上顎左側前歯部の痛みを主訴に来院した. 近医にて感染根管治療が必要との判断から, 上顎左側中切歯に対してポストコアの除去が試みられたが不能であった. 本学初診時にはすでにコア部分は過度に削合されており, リトルジャイアントを応用するも, コア部分に対して十分な把持が得られず同様に除去不能であった. そこで, コア部分に適合する自家製アタッチメントを金銀パラジウム合金によって製作し, これを介してリトルジャイナントを応用したところ, 2回目の来院時には容易にポストコアの除去を成功させることができた. ポストコア除去後の歯根には破折線等の異常は観察されず, 除去に伴う痺痛の増悪も認められなかった.考察: すでに削合されていたコア部分に対して, リトルジャイアントに合わせてさらなる形態修正を行えば, 金属の強度低下による破折という危険性が予測された. したがって, 本症例では現状のコア部分の強度を維持したままでポストコアを除去することが必須であった. リトルジャイアントの特性を熟知した上で, 最適な自家製アタッチメントを製作できたことが, 今回の成功につながったものと考察される.結論:ポストコア除去に困難を極めた症例に対して, 的確な判断のもと自家製アタッチメントを製作しこれを併用することで, 無事に除去を成功させることができた.術後には, 患者, 術者ともに高い満足感を得ることができた.

Vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) makes images remain relatively stable on the retina. To keep appropriate performance and minimize image slip throughout life, VOR is subject to long-term adaptive regulation by visual input. It has been reported that adaptive changes in VOR gain (eye velocity/head velocity) are evoked either by fitting subjects with magnifying, miniaturizing, or reversing spectacles during normal behavior or by moving a large visual field in or out of phase relative to the subject's head movement. These feature frequency-selectivity. We studied the flexibility of adaptive gain change in VOR required by a horizontal visual-vestibular mismatch in earth vertical axis rotation (EVAR), including adaptive gain change from EVA to off-vertical axis rotation (OVAR) and other velocities. The visual-vestibular mismatch was made by oscillating subjects in EVAR for 30 minutes at 0.3 Hz with the peak velocity of 30 deg/s and 60 deg/s, synchronized with both in-phase (gain decrease: x 0 experiment) and out-of-phase (gain increase: x 2 experiment) sinusoidal rotation of white-black stripe patterns. Subjects were 19 healthy adult volunteers with no history of neurological symptoms. Horizontal and vertical eye positions were recorded by bitemporal DC-coupled electrooculography. In the x 2 adaptation experiment with 0.3 Hz at the peak velocity of 30 deg/s, the percent change in gain (post-pre/ pre) was 110% at the same stimulation and 100% at 40 deg/s in EVA. In the x 0 adaptation experiment with 0.3 Hz at the peak velocity of 30 deg/s, the percent change in gain was -50% at the same stimulation in EVA. In the x 2 adaptation experiment with 0.3 Hz at the peak velocity of 60 deg/s, the percent change in gain was 66% at the same stimulation in EVA, 30% at the same stimulation in nose-up position, and 74% at the same stimulation in nose-down position. In the x 0 adaptation experiment with 0.3 Hz at the peak velocity of 60 deg/s, the percent change in gain was -34% at the same stimulation in EVA. No change in VOR gain was observed at other peak velocities. These results suggest that VOR adaptation depends frequency and maximum angular head velocity, and this characteristic is observed in OVAR.

The reaction of alkenes with conjugated ene-yne-ketones, such as 1-benzoyl-2-ethynylcycloalkenes, with a catalytic amount of Cr(CO)(5)(THF) gave 5-phenyl-2-furylcyclopropane derivatives in good yields. The key intermediate of this cyclopropanation is a (2-furyl)carbene complex generated by a nucleophilic attack of carbonyl oxygen to an internal alkyne carbon in pi-alkyne complex or sigma-vinyl cationic complex. A wide range of late transition metal compounds, such as [RuCl(2)(CO)(3)](2), [RhCl(cod)](2), [Rh(OAc)(2)](2), PdCl(2), and PtCl(2), also catalyzes the cyclopropanation of alkenes with ene-yne-ketones effectively. When the reactions were carried out with dienes as a carbene acceptor, the more substituted or more electron-rich alkene moiety was selectively cyclopropanated with the (2-furyl)carbenoid intermediate.

Noroviruses (NVs) cause many cases of oyster- or clam-associated gastroenteritis in various countries. We collected 191 samples from Japanese oysters intended for raw consumption that had been harvested from the sea in two different areas between December 2001 and February 2002. To detect, quantitate, and phylogenetically analyze the NV genome in purified concentrates from the stomachs and digestive diverticula of these oysters, we amplified the NV capsid gene by reverse transcription-PCR. Phylogenetic analysis was performed by using the neighbor-joining method. We detected the NV genome in 17 of 191 oysters (9%). Phylogenetic analysis indicated genogroup I (Norwalk virus type) in 3 of the 17 oysters and genogroup II (Snow Mountain virus type) in the other 14. Both genogroups showed wide genetic diversity. To quantify the NV capsid gene in these oysters, we performed real-time PCR using genogroup-specific probes. More than 10 2 copies of the NV genome were detected in 11 of 17 oysters. The results suggested that about 10% of Japanese oysters intended for raw consumption harbored NVs, and more than 50% of those oysters in which NVs were detected had a large amount.

Seagrasses are composed of four families belonging to angiosperms and they are thought to become adaptive to aquatic life independently. Zosteraceae is one such family and because of the relatively high species diversity around Japan and Korea coast areas, the family might have arisen therefrom. To elucidate the origin and evolution of Zosteraceae which consists of three genera, Phyllospadix, Zostera, and Heterozostera, 2.8 kb nucleotide sequences of rbcL and matK genes in the chloroplast genome were examined for various species, including cosmopolitan Z. marina and endemic Z. caulescens. The phylogenetic analysis reveals the following three features. First, based on the synonymous nucleotide substitution rate of the rice chloroplast genome, we estimated the divergence times between Zosteraceae and its closest relative, Potamogetonaceae, and between different genera, Zostera and Phyllospadix, as approximately 100 million years (myr) and 36 myr, respectively, suggesting that Zosteraceae emerged somewhere in the period from 36 myr ago to 100 myr ago. Second, two subgenera of Zostera, Zostera and Zosterella, exhibit their reciprocal monophyly and appear to have differentiated from each other approximately 33 myr ago. However, the third genus Heterozostera branched off only 5 myr ago from the stem lineage leading to Zosterella and this seems too recent in comparison with the ancient divergence of the two subgenera. Third, we estimated the most recent common ancestor of subgenus Zostera as 6 myr. In Z. marina four haplotypes were found in the sample and have diversified in the past 1.5 myr. One haplotype is shared by both sides of the Japan Archipelago and its closely related haplotypes occur also in eastern Pacific Ocean. Based on these phylogeographic analyses, we propose a provisional age related classification of Zosteraceae to argue the origin and evolution.

It has been suspected that in comparison with glucose or fatty acids, the levels of amino acids may readily change with different forms of exercise. In the present study, we measured the concentrations of amino acids, glucose, triglycerides, total protein and total cholesterol in the blood and/or cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of rats subjected to forced running exercise on a treadmill, and voluntary running exercise using a wheel, with a constant running distance of 440 m. Rats that performed no running and rats subjected to immobilization stress were used as controls. We observed a few significant changes in the levels of plasma glucose, triglycerides, total protein and total cholesterol in all groups. Whereas, plasma amino acid levels were significantly changed by exercise and stress, especially during the light period. The plasma levels of many amino acids were specifically increased by forced running; some were decreased by immobilization stress. Few amino acids showed similar changes in their levels as a result of voluntary running. In addition, there was a significant difference in the degree of amino acid imbalance between blood and CSF. These results provide the first information on changes in levels of amino acids in plasma and CSF resulting from forced and voluntary exercises.

We have developed a stacked image sensor based on a thin-film crystalline selenium (c-Se) heterojunction photodiode. Uniform c-Se-based photodiodes laminated on complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor circuits were fabricated by tellurium-diffused crystallization. We herein present the first high-resolution images obtained with such a device. Furthermore, the dark current was significantly decreased by using an n-type wide-band-gap gallium oxide (Ga 2 O 3 ) layer with a high hole-injection barrier.

Intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) on initial computed tomography (CT) was reported to predict lesions of diffuse axonal injury (DAI) in the corpus callosum (CC) on subsequent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). We aimed to examine the relationship between initial CT findings and DAI lesions detected on MRI as well as the relationship between the severity of IVH (IVH score) and severity of DAI (DAI staging). A consecutive 140 patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI) who underwent MRI within 30 days after onset were revisited. We reviewed their initial CT for the following six findings: Status of basal cistern, status of mid-line shift, epidural hematoma, IVH, subarachnoid hemorrhage, and volume of hemorrhagic mass and IVH score were assigned in each patient. Based on MRI findings, patients were divided into DAI and non-DAI groups and were assigned a DAI staging. Then, to confirm that the IVH on initial CT predicts DAI lesions on MRI, we used multi-variate analysis of the six CT findings, including IVH, and examined the relationship between IVH score and DAI staging. The IVH detected on CT was the only predictor of DAI (p=0.0139). The IVH score and DAI staging showed significant positive correlation (p0.0003). IVH score in DAI stage 3 (with DAI involving the brain stem; p=0.0025) or stage 2 (with DAI involving CC; p=0.0042) was significantly higher than that of DAI stage 0 (no DAI lesions). In conclusion, IVH on initial CT is the only marker of DAI on subsequent MRI, specifically severe DAI (stage 2 or 3).
