1. Multiple electrolytes imbalances in a patient with inflammatory bowel disease associated with vitamin D deficiency: a case report

Abstract

Abstract Background Inflammatory bowel disease involves chronic inflammation and ulceration, primarily Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. The prevalence of inflammatory bowel disease is rising in industrialized countries. We describe the case of a patient with inflammatory bowel disease and multiple electrolyte disturbances that emphasize the link between a vitamin D deficiency and electrolyte imbalances. Case An 86‐year‐old Japanese man with severe hypocalcemia, hypophosphatemia, hypokalemia, and hypomagnesemia was referred to the gastroenterology and hepatology department our university hospital for severe diarrhea and abdominal pain. Based on clinical symptoms and biochemical and endoscopic findings, Crohn’s disease, intestinal Behçet’s disease, and intestinal tuberculosis were considered as differential diagnoses, but a final diagnosis was not reached. Prednisolone, azathioprine, and metronidazole were administered, and no apparent electrolyte abnormality was observed at the patient’s admission to our hospital. On the 80th hospital day, marked hypocalcemia, hypophosphatemia, hypokalemia, and hypomagnesemia were noted and prolonged, despite daily supplementation with Ca and inorganic P. At his consultation with our department, we observed decreased fractional excretion of Ca, tubular reabsorption of phosphate, fractional excretion of K, and fractional excretion of Mg, suggesting the depletion of vitamin D and extrarenal wasting of K and Mg. The patient’s serum Ca and inorganic P were quickly elevated in response to treatment with an active form of vitamin D, and his serum levels of K and Mg were restored to the normal range by an intravenous administration of K and Mg. A vitamin D deficiency is not rare in inflammatory bowel disease and is caused primarily by the decreased intestinal absorption of vitamin D. In the management of electrolyte imbalances in patients with inflammatory bowel disease, clinicians must consider the possible development of vitamin D deficiency-related disorders. Conclusion Vitamin D deficiency in entero-Behçet’s disease leads to severe hypocalcemia and hypophosphatemia, highlighting the importance of awareness in management.

2. A retrospective study on tolvaptan prescription in clinical practice in patients with syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone (SIADH) using the Japanese claims database

Abstract

We aimed to survey the status of tolvaptan administration in routine clinical practice since the approval of a novel indication for treating syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone (SIADH) in Japan. Data from a population of 3,152 patients aged ≥18 years and diagnosed with SIADH between July 1, 2020 and June 30, 2021 were extracted from a Japanese database. Tolvaptan was administered to 586 patients while 2,566 patients were followed up without tolvaptan. In the tolvaptan-treated group, the standard initial doses were 3.75 mg and 7.5 mg in 290 (49.5%) and 250 (42.7%) patients, respectively. The dose was increased in 112 (38.6%) and 71 (28.4%) and decreased in 8 (2.8%) and 46 (18.4%) of patients with 3.75 and 7.5 mg initial doses, respectively. Of the total 586 SIADH patients treated with tolvaptan, serum sodium concentrations were analyzed in 60 patients. In both treatment groups of 3.75 and 7.5 mg initial doses, the serum sodium concentration was elevated from the second day of treatment and reached 135 mEq/L on the fourth day, which was maintained for 2 weeks. Rapid correction of hyponatremia (>10 mEq/L increase in serum sodium concentration over 1 day or >18 mEq/L increase over 2 days) occurred in 26.7% patients with a 7.5 mg initial dose (4 of 15 patients) but not in the patients with a 3.75 mg initial dose (n = 16), suggesting that an initial dose of 3.75 mg of tolvaptan may be a better choice for the safe and proper correction of hyponatremia.

Abstract

The hydrogen desorption and absorption reactions of the complex metal hydride NaAlH4 are disproportionation processes, and the kinetics can be improved by adding a few mol% of Ti compounds, although the catalytic mechanism, including the location and state of Ti, remains unknown. In this study, we aimed to reveal the generating mechanism of catalytic Al–Ti alloy in NaAlH4 with TiCl3 using quantum multiprobe techniques such as neutron diffraction (ND), synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD), anomalous X-ray scattering (AXS), and X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS). Rietveld refinements of the ND and XRD, profiles before the first desorption of NaAlD(H)4–0.02TiCl3 showed that Al in NaAlD(H)4 was partially substituted by Ti. On the other hand, Ti was not present in NaAlH4, and Al–Ti nanoparticles were detected in the XRD profile after the first re-absorption. This was consistent with the AXS and XAFS results. It is suggested that the substitution promotes the formation of a highly dispersed nanosized Al–Ti alloy during the first desorption process and that the effectiveness of TiCl3 as an additive can be attributed to the dispersion of Ti.

Abstract

Machine equipment usually comprises many mechanical elements that can fail because of functional deterioration and friction. For tribo-elements like plane bearings, it is extremely important to diagnose the abnormal conditions and prevent such parts from breakdown caused by wear. However, diagnosing tribo-elements requires expensive diagnostic equipment and expertise. This study aims to propose a cost- and time- effective system that detect the signs of breakdown during equipment operation by using machine learning to identify abnormalities. We conducted wear tests in contaminated oil and used multiple sensors to collect data regarding the friction force, the electrical contact resistance, the acoustic emission (AE) signal, and vibration. An appropriate learning sample was selected using k-fold cross-validation. The electrical contact resistance was found to contribute relatively little to the detection of abnormalities, whereas the friction coefficient contributed greatly. Furthermore, the AE signal and the vibration detected local changes on the sliding surface. Consequently, we found that machine learning can judge whether monitoring data are normal or abnormal.

Abstract

Previous studies investigated the wear mechanisms under dry sliding conditions and in new oil. However, in practice, wear particles and dust are introduced into the lubricating oil of the machinery. Therefore, it is difficult to conclude that the wear mechanism of the machinery was accurately reproduced in those studies. In this study, we aimed to clarify the wear mechanism of a sliding bearing material, WJ2, under lubrication using seven types of oil contaminated with solid particles. Wear tests were conducted with the contaminated oil using a block-on-ring tribo-tester. The results showed that, even though the ISO cleanness codes were almost the same for all the oils, the wear mechanisms of WJ2 were different. There were three different action modes of iron particles. The gaps between the iron particles and the WJ2 matrix are formed when iron particles were buried into the surface of the WJ2 matrix. In the case of oil contaminated with a mixture of iron particles and soft particles, shear fracture occurred from the gaps formed by the buried iron particles and pits were formed. The sizes and depths of the pits varied with the mutual solubility between the mixed soft particles and the block material; with another type of metal with a low mutual solubility, the concavities were small and shallow. The wear mechanisms of WJ2 were clarified under lubrication with the contaminated oil.

Abstract

Wear of sliding surfaces in machinery is one of the major causes of mechanical failure. Thus, detecting wear on sliding surfaces is very important for preventing mechanical failure. Current diagnosis methods for detecting wear particles such as a spectrometry oil analysis program, particle count method and ferrography method are very useful for it. However, these methods need high cost, expertise and long time for the analysis. Moreover, the particle count method can only measure the size and the number of particles and it cannot indicate whether the lubricating oil is degraded by oxidation or solid particles. Therefore, the diagnosis method which can evaluate degradation cause and level of lubricating oil is required for effective maintenance. The authors have developed a new diagnostic method for lubricating oils by the colorimetric analysis of membrane patches. In the previous study, we reported that there is a good correlation between membrane patch color and contamination in lubricating oil. From the results of our previous study, it is possible to diagnose wear on sliding surfaces by using membrane patch color. The purpose of this study is to develop new wear monitoring method of sliding surface in machinery by using membrane patch color. First, we conducted filtration tests to investigate degradation causes of lubricating oil in actual machinery. The results showed that they are classified into solid particles and/or oxidation products. Secondly, we prepared oil samples which were artificially degraded by solid particles and/or oil oxidation products based on the filtration test, and we conducted wear tests in the degraded oils by using block-on-ring tester. The results presented that it is important to detect not only the number of particles but types of particles for the monitoring of wear on sliding surfaces. Finally, we investigated the relation between ISO cleanliness code and membrane patch color and we proposed a new parameter Ic using the ISO code. As a result, it is shown that it is possible to detect wear on sliding surfaces easily using Ic and membrane patch color.

7. The polymorphism of YWHAE, a gene encoding 14-3-3epsilon, and brain morphology in schizophrenia: a voxel-based morphometric study.

Abstract

BackgroundYWHAE is a possible susceptibility gene for schizophrenia that encodes 14-3-3epsilon, a Disrupted-in-Schizophrenia 1 (DISC1)-interacting molecule, but the effect of variation in its genotype on brain morphology remains largely unknown.MethodsIn this voxel-based morphometric magnetic resonance imaging study, we conducted whole-brain analyses regarding the effects of YWHAE single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) (rs28365859, rs11655548, and rs9393) and DISC1 SNP (rs821616) on gray matter volume in a Japanese sample of 72 schizophrenia patients and 86 healthy controls. On the basis of a previous animal study, we also examined the effect of rs28365859 genotype specifically on hippocampal volume.ResultsWhole-brain analyses showed no significant genotype effect of these SNPs on gray matter volume in all subjects, but we found significant genotype-by-diagnosis interaction for rs28365859 in the left insula and right putamen. The protective C allele carriers of rs28365859 had a significantly larger left insula than the G homozygotes only for schizophrenia patients, while the controls with G allele homozygosity had a significantly larger right putamen than the C allele carriers. The C allele carriers had a larger right hippocampus than the G allele homozygotes in schizophrenia patients, but not in healthy controls. No significant interaction was found between rs28365859 and DISC1 SNP on gray matter volume.ConclusionsThese different effects of the YWHAE (rs28365859) genotype on brain morphology in schizophrenia and healthy controls suggest that variation in its genotype might be, at least partly, related to the abnormal neurodevelopment, including in the limbic regions, reported in schizophrenia. Our results also suggest its specific role among YWHAE SNPs in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia.

8. Targeting SUR1/Abcc8-type neuroendocrine KATP channels in pancreatic islet cells.

Abstract

ATP-sensitive K+ (KATP) channels play a regulatory role in hormone-secreting pancreatic islet α-, β- and δ-cells. Targeted channel deletion would assist analysis and dissection of the intraislet regulatory network. Toward this end Abcc8/Sur1 flox mice were generated and tested by crossing with glucagon-(GCG)-cre mice to target α-cell KATP channels selectively. Agonist resistance was used to quantify the percent of α-cells lacking channels. 41% of Sur1(loxP/loxP);GCG-cre+ and ∼64% of Sur1(loxP/-);GCG-cre+ α-cells lacked KATP channels, while ∼65% of α-cells expressed enhanced yellow fluorescent protein (EYFP) in ROSA-EYFP/GCG-cre matings. The results are consistent with a stochastic two-recombination event mechanism and a requirement that both floxed alleles are deleted.

Abstract

In situ gas-loading sample holders for two-dimensionally arranged detectors in time-of-flight neutron total scattering experiments have been developed to investigate atomic arrangements during deuterium absorption using time and real-space resolution. A single-crystal sapphire container was developed that allows conditions of 473 K and 10 MPa hydrogen gas pressure. High-resolution transient measurements detected deuterium absorption by palladium that proceeded within a few seconds. A double-layered container with thick- and thin-walled vanadium allowed conditions of 423 K and 10 MPa hydrogen gas pressure. The deuterium occupation sites of a lanthanum–nickel–aluminium alloy are discussed in detail on the basis of real-space high-resolution data obtained from in situ neutron scattering measurements and reverse Monte Carlo structural modeling.

26. Impact of tolvaptan add-on treatment on patients with heart failure requiring long-term congestion management: A retrospective cohort study using a medical claim database in Japan

Abstract

The impact of tolvaptan on the long-term outcomes of patients with heart failure (HF) remains inconclusive. We evaluated patients requiring long-term congestion management for the time to rehospitalization for HF (HF rehospitalization), the time to in-hospital death and explored the factors that may influence the outcomes.Using data (April 2008 to September 2019) from a medical claims database, patients with HF prescribed tolvaptan (tolvaptan cohort) and those prescribed loop diuretics before tolvaptan was introduced to the hospital (furosemide cohort) were compared. Patients with HF who experienced ≥2 HF hospitalizations and ≥ 1 tolvaptan or loop diuretic prescription during and after HF hospitalization were included. Data of patients with serum creatinine and estimated glomerular filtration rate were analyzed for time to HF rehospitalization and in-hospital death within 1 year after the second discharge and factors that may influence the outcomes.Among the 1931 and 631 tolvaptan and furosemide cohort patients, respectively, time to HF rehospitalization was not significantly different (p = 0.0921); time to in-hospital death was significantly longer in the tolvaptan cohort than in the furosemide cohort (p = 0.0005). Age, serum sodium, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors or angiotensin II receptor blockers were identified as factors for both outcomes (p 0.05).Tolvaptan did not significantly affect time to HF rehospitalization. However, further worsening of the condition leading to death may be delayed, and time to in-hospital death may be prolonged in patients treated with tolvaptan, indicating its usefulness for long-term congestion management.

The intervention studied had to be aimed at optimizing medication use and present results on costs.Results: Out of 3,871 studies identified by the search strategy, eleven studies were included. The interventions involved different provider types, with a majority described as a multidisciplinary team involving a pharmacist and a general practitioner, in the decision-making process. Interventions were generally associated with a reduction in medication expenditure. The benefits of the intervention in terms of clinical outcomes remain limited. Five studies were cost-benefit analyses, which had a net benefit that was either null or positive. Cost-utility and cost-effectiveness analyses resulted in incremental cost-effectiveness ratios that were generally within the willingness-to-pay thresholds of the countries in which the studies were conducted. However, the quality of the studies was generally low. Omission of key cost elements of economic evaluations, including intervention cost and payer perspective, limited interpretability.Conclusion: Interventions to optimize medication use may provide benefits that outweigh their implementation costs, but the evidence remains limited. Abstract

ObjectiveTo evaluate whether eculizumab helps patients with anti–acetylcholine receptor–positive (AChR+) refractory generalized myasthenia gravis (gMG) achieve the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America (MGFA) post-intervention status of minimal manifestations (MM), we assessed patients' status throughout REGAIN (Safety and Efficacy of Eculizumab in AChR+ Refractory Generalized Myasthenia Gravis) and its open-label extension.MethodsPatients who completed the REGAIN randomized controlled trial and continued into the open-label extension were included in this tertiary endpoint analysis. Patients were assessed for the MGFA post-intervention status of improved, unchanged, worse, MM, and pharmacologic remission at defined time points during REGAIN and through week 130 of the open-label study.ResultsA total of 117 patients completed REGAIN and continued into the open-label study (eculizumab/eculizumab: 56; placebo/eculizumab: 61). At week 26 of REGAIN, more eculizumab-treated patients than placebo-treated patients achieved a status of improved (60.7% vs 41.7%) or MM (25.0% vs 13.3%; common OR: 2.3; 95% CI: 1.1–4.5). After 130 weeks of eculizumab treatment, 88.0% of patients achieved improved status and 57.3% of patients achieved MM status. The safety profile of eculizumab was consistent with its known profile and no new safety signals were detected.ConclusionEculizumab led to rapid and sustained achievement of MM in patients with AChR+ refractory gMG. These findings support the use of eculizumab in this previously difficult-to-treat patient population.ClinicalTrials.gov IdentifierREGAIN, NCT01997229; REGAIN open-label extension, NCT02301624.Classification of EvidenceThis study provides Class II evidence that, after 26 weeks of eculizumab treatment, 25.0% of adults with AChR+ refractory gMG achieved MM, compared with 13.3% who received placebo.

Abstract

This study investigated the non-equilibrium hydrogen absorption reaction paths of the AB5-type LaNi2Co3 alloy using time-resolved in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction. Diffraction data were collected every second for reactions under two hydrogen loading pressures. Hydrogen absorption with a hydrogen loading of 1 MPa rapidly transformed α phase to a transient phase (estimated to be LaNi2Co3H3.1–3.6, named γ∗); this has not previously been observed under equilibrium processes. The γ∗ phase continuously transformed into the γ phase (LaNi2Co3H4.5–5.0), and the β phase (LaNi2Co3H~3.6) was not formed. When 0.18 MPa of hydrogen was loaded, initially, the γ∗ phase appeared, followed by the formation of the β phase, finally transforming into the γ phase. These results indicate that a higher loading pressure promotes the formation of the γ∗ phase and assists its continuous transformation into the γ phase by enhancing the dissolution of hydrogen into the α and γ∗ phases.

Abstract

The diffusion and site occupation of hydrogen in the monohydride phase ([Formula: see text] phase) of the V1− x− yCr xMo y–H ( x + y ≤ 0.15) system have been studied by means of proton nuclear magnetic resonance. The [Formula: see text] phase has a body centered tetragonal (BCT) structure and hydrogen atoms occupy the octahedral (Oz) sites along the c-axis. Cr has a smaller atomic radius than V but Mo has a larger one, resulting in no obvious change in the unit cell volume of the BCT lattice by substitution of both Cr and Mo for a part of V, although the multiple metal elements of V, Cr, and Mo induce lattice strain and distortion. The temperature dependence of 1H spin-lattice relaxation time has demonstrated that the substitution of both Cr and Mo offsets the change in the activation energy for hydrogen diffusion EH for the Oz sites, while our previous study has indicated that Cr increases EH and Mo decreases that. The diffusion behavior of hydrogen is explained by the dimension of the interstitial sites attributing to the weighted mean atomic radius of the substitutional metal elements, which is independent of their affinities for hydrogen and the lattice strain.

Abstract

The hydrogen desorption and absorption reactions of the complex metal hydride NaAlH4 are disproportionation processes, and the kinetics can be improved by adding a few mol% of Ti compounds, although the catalytic mechanism, including the location and state of Ti, remains unknown. In this study, we aimed to reveal the generating mechanism of catalytic Al–Ti alloy in NaAlH4 with TiCl3 using quantum multiprobe techniques such as neutron diffraction (ND), synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD), anomalous X-ray scattering (AXS), and X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS). Rietveld refinements of the ND and XRD, profiles before the first desorption of NaAlD(H)4–0.02TiCl3 showed that Al in NaAlD(H)4 was partially substituted by Ti. On the other hand, Ti was not present in NaAlH4, and Al–Ti nanoparticles were detected in the XRD profile after the first re-absorption. This was consistent with the AXS and XAFS results. It is suggested that the substitution promotes the formation of a highly dispersed nanosized Al–Ti alloy during the first desorption process and that the effectiveness of TiCl3 as an additive can be attributed to the dispersion of Ti.

Abstract

This paper presents a metal hydride (MH) actuator rescue jack that uses hydrogen-absorbing alloy as its pressure source. The MH actuator is attached to a thin and flexible fiber-reinforced rubber bag end effector, enabling it to pry open narrow and rough gaps. The proposed MH rescue jack was prepared with different amounts of alloy (6–15 g). The results showed that, with only 6 g of alloy, the rescue jack was able to jack up a 100 kg weight to a height of 10 mm within 1 min by heating the alloy container to 50 °C. Moreover, the jack-up speed increased as the amount of alloy increased. A mathematical model was derived from the jack-up operation tests to estimate the jack-up height, with the aim of designing appropriate amounts of hydrogen-absorbing alloys for rescue jack development. According to the experimental results, the response of the jack-up height was modeled as a first order system in time domain. The model was defined as a function of alloy amount, and its validity was assessed by comparing the experimental and simulation results. The results were in good agreement which confirmed the potential of the proposed model as a design tool for jacks from the viewpoint of time constant.

Abstract

Background Neuropathic pain following peripheral nerve injury (PNI) is linked to neuroinflammation in the spinal cord marked by astrocyte activation and upregulation of interleukin 6 (IL -6 ), chemokine (C-C motif) ligand 2 (CCL2) and chemokine (C-X-C motif) ligand 1 (CXCL1), with inhibition of each individually being beneficial in pain models. Methods Wild type (WT) mice and mice with global or pGfap-cre- or pGFAP-cre/ERT2-driven Abcc8/SUR1 deletion or global Trpm4 deletion underwent unilateral sciatic nerve cuffing. WT mice received prophylactic (starting on post-operative day [pod]-0) or therapeutic (starting on pod-21) administration of the SUR1 antagonist, glibenclamide (10 µg IP) daily. We measured mechanical and thermal sensitivity using von Frey filaments and an automated Hargreaves method. Spinal cord tissues were evaluated for SUR1-TRPM4, IL-6, CCL2 and CXCL1. Results Sciatic nerve cuffing in WT mice resulted in pain behaviors (mechanical allodynia, thermal hyperalgesia) and newly upregulated SUR1-TRPM4 in dorsal horn astrocytes. Global and pGfap-cre-driven Abcc8 deletion and global Trpm4 deletion prevented development of pain behaviors. In mice with Abcc8 deletion regulated by pGFAP-cre/ERT2, after pain behaviors were established, delayed silencing of Abcc8 by tamoxifen resulted in gradual improvement over the next 14 days. After PNI, leakage of the blood-spinal barrier allowed entry of glibenclamide into the affected dorsal horn. Daily repeated administration of glibenclamide, both prophylactically and after allodynia was established, prevented or reduced allodynia. The salutary effects of glibenclamide on pain behaviors correlated with reduced expression of IL-6, CCL2 and CXCL1 by dorsal horn astrocytes. Conclusion SUR1-TRPM4 may represent a novel non-addicting target for neuropathic pain.

Abstract

Background Antibodies to the aquaporin-4 (AQP4) water channel in neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) are reported to trigger the complement cascade, which is implicated in astrocyte damage and subsequent neuronal injury. The PREVENT study demonstrated that the terminal complement inhibitor eculizumab reduces adjudicated relapse risk in patients with anti-AQP4 immunoglobulin G-positive (AQP4+) NMOSD. The objective of this analysis was to evaluate the efficacy of eculizumab in reducing relapse risk and its safety in AQP4+ NMOSD across clinically relevant subgroups in PREVENT. Methods In the randomized, double-blind, time-to-event, phase 3 PREVENT trial, 143 adults received eculizumab (maintenance dose, 1200 mg/2 weeks) or placebo (2:1), with stable-dose concomitant immunosuppressive therapy (IST) permitted (except rituximab and mitoxantrone). Post hoc analyses of relapses and adverse events were performed for prespecified and post hoc subgroups based on concomitant IST and prior rituximab use, demographic and disease characteristics, and autoimmune comorbidity. Results The significant reduction in relapse risk observed for eculizumab versus placebo in the overall PREVENT population was consistently maintained across subgroups based on concomitant IST and previous rituximab use, age, sex, region, race, time since clinical onset of NMOSD, historical annualized relapse rate, baseline Expanded Disability Status Scale score, and history of another autoimmune disorder. The serious infection rate was lower with eculizumab than placebo regardless of rituximab use in the previous year, concomitant IST use, or history of another autoimmune disorder. Conclusion Across a wide range of clinically relevant AQP4+ NMOSD patient subgroups in PREVENT, eculizumab therapy was consistently effective versus placebo in reducing relapse risk, with no apparent increase in serious infection rate. This paper presents a flexible and compact rescue jack system that uses a hydrogen-absorbing alloy as its pressure source. The jack system comprises a container for the hydrogen-absorbing alloy and an end effector thin enough to be applied within a 2 mm-thick gap, made of a fiber-reinforced rubber bag. The hydrogen-absorbing alloy (LaNi4.45Co0.5Mn0.05), whose plateau pressure was set to near atmospheric pressure at 25 °C, released hydrogen gas when heated to 50 °C. Experiments showed the system could lift 100 kg at moderate speed when the alloy container was placed in hot water (50 °C). Moreover, the jack system could maintain a 50 mm lift of 100 kg for nearly 12 h—performance comparable with that of an air jack. This clearly indicates the fiber-reinforced rubber bag is a suitable end effector of the actuator. The proposed jack system has good potential for prompt rescue activities conducted by non-professional operatives.

Abstract

Hydrogenation of nonequilibrium alloys may form nanometer-sized metal hydride clusters, depending on the alloy compositions and hydrogenation conditions. Here in the Ti-rich compositions of the immiscible Mg-Ti system MgH2 clusters are embedded in a Ti-H matrix. Our previous works have indicated that the interface energy between the two metal hydrides reduces the stability of MgH2. The aim of our study is to obtain the structural information on the nanometer-sized clusters. Indeed, MgD2 clusters embedded in a face-centered-cubic (FCC) Ti-D matrix is found in Mg0.25Ti0.75D1.65 by means of 2H magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS NMR). The atomic pair distribution function (PDF) analysis of neutron total scattering data suggests that the MgD2 clusters have an orthorhombic structure, which is different from a rutile-type body-centered-tetragonal (BCT) structure of α-MgD2 observed in the Mg-rich compositions.
