This paper presents the finite element deformation and failure simulation of a typical Korean high-power reactor vessel under a severe accident characterized by large break loss of coolant (LBLOCA) with in-vessel retention of molten corium through external reactor vessel cooling (IVR-ERVC) conditions. Temperature distributions calculated using Modular Accident Analysis Program Version 5 (MAAP5) as thermal boundary conditions were used, and ABAQUS thermal and structural analyses were performed. After full ablation, the temperature of the inner surface in the thinnest section remained high (920 °C), but the stress remained relatively low (less than 6 MPa). At the outer surface, the stress was as high as 250 MPa; however, the resulting plastic strain was small owing to the low temperature of 200 °C. Variations in stress, inelastic strain, and temperature with time in the thinnest section suggest that the plastic and creep strains are saturated owing to stress relaxation, resulting in low cumulative damage. Thus, the lower head of the vessel can maintain its structural integrity under LBLOCA with IVR-ERVC conditions. The sensitivity analysis of internal pressure indicates the occurrence of failure in the thinnest section at an internal pressure >9.6 MPa via local necking followed by failure due to high stresses.

The chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking (CISCC) is one of the major integrity concerns in dry storage canisters made of austenitic stainless steels (ASSs). In this study, an advanced duplex stainless steel (DSS) with a composition of Fe–19Cr–4Ni-2.5Mo-4.5Mn (ADCS) was developed and its performance was compared with that of commercial ASS and DSS alloys. The chemical composition of ADCS was determined to obtain greater pitting and CISCC resistance as well as a proper combination of strength and ductility. Then, the thermomechanical processing (TMP) condition was applied, which resulted in higher strength than ASSs (304L SS and 316L SS) and better ductility than DSSs (2101 LDSS and 2205 DSS). The potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectra (EIS) results represented the better pitting corrosion resistance of ADCS compared to 304L SS and 316L SS by forming a better passive layer. The CISCC tests using four-point loaded specimens showed that cracks were initiated at 24 h for 304L SS and 144 h for 316L SS, while crack was not found until 1008 h for ADCS. Overall, the developed alloy, ADCS, showed better combination of CISCC resistance and mechanical properties as dry storage canister materials than commercial alloys.

When wall-thinning occurs in nuclear Class 2 and 3 pipes, reinforcement is typically applied rather than replacement. To analyze the structural integrity of reinforced wall-thinned pipe, stress analysis results using full 3-D FE analysis are not compatible to the design code equation, ASME BPVC Sec. III NC/ND-3650. Therefore, the efficient stress evaluation method for the reinforced wall-thinned pipe, compatible to the design code equation, needs to be developed. In this paper, stress evaluation methods for the reinforced wall-thinned pipe are proposed using the equivalent straight pipe concept. Furthermore, for fatigue analysis of the reinforced wall-thinned pipe, the stress intensification factor of reinforced wall-thinned pipe is presented using the structural stress method given in ASME BPVC Sec. VIII Div.2.

In this paper, elastic-plastic fracture mechanics analysis is performed to determine the critical crack sizes of the multipurpose canister (MPC) manufactured using austenitic stainless steel under dynamic loading conditions that simulate drop accidents. Firstly, dynamic finite element (FE) analysis is performed using Abaqus v.2018 with the KORAD (Korea Radioactive Waste Agency)-21 model under two drop accident conditions. Through the FE analysis, critical locations and through-thickness stress distributions in the MPC are identified, where the maximum plastic strain occurs during impact loadings. Then, the evaluation using the failure assessment diagram (FAD) is performed by postulating an external surface crack at the critical location to determine the critical crack depth. It is found that, for the drop cases considered in this paper, the principal failure mechanism for the circumferential surface crack is found to be the plastic collapse due to dominant high bending axial stress in the thickness. For axial cracks, the plastic collapse is also the dominant failure mechanism due to high membrane hoop stress, followed by the ductile tearing analysis. When incorporating the strain rate effect on yield strength and fracture toughness, the critical crack depth increases from 10 to 20%.

This paper proposes a combined plastic and creep constitutive model of A533B1 pressure vessel steel to simulate progressive deformation of nuclear pressure vessels under severe accident conditions. To develop the model, recent tensile test data covering a wide range of temperatures (from RT to 1,100 °C) and strain rates (from 0.001%/s to 1.0%/s) was used. Comparison with experimental data confirms that the proposed combined plastic and creep model can well reflect effects of temperature and strain rate on tensile behaviour up to failure. In the companion paper (Part II), the proposed model will be used to simulate OECD lower head failure (OLHF) test data.

This paper proposes strain-based failure model of A533B1 pressure vessel steel to simulate failure, followed by application to OECD lower head failure (OLHF) test simulation for experimental validation. The proposed strain-based failure model uses simple constant and linear functions based on physical failure modes with the critical strain value determined either using the lower bound of true fracture strain or using the average value of total elongation depending on the temperature. Application to OECD Lower Head Failure (OLHF) tests shows that progressive deformation, failure time and failure location can be well predicted.

To quantify the conservatism of existing ASME strain-based evaluation methods for seismic loading, this paper presents very low cycle fatigue test data of elbows under various cyclic loading conditions and comparison of evaluation results with experimental failure cycles. For strain-based evaluation methods, the method presented in ASME BPVC CC N-900 and Sec. VIII are used. Predicted failure cycles are compared with experimental failure cycle to quantify the conservatism of evaluation methods. All methods give very conservative failure cycles. The CC N-900 method is the most conservative and prediction results are only ∼0.5% of experimental data. For Sec. VIII method, the use of the option using code tensile properties gives ∼3% of experimental data, and the use of the material-specific reduction of area can reduce conservatism but still gives ∼15% of experimental data.

This paper presents approximate in-depth residual stress and plastic strain profiles for laser-peened alloy 600 surface via FE analysis. In approximations, effects of the initial welding residual stress and the number of shots are quantified. Based on FE analysis results, residual stress profiles are quantified by two variables; the maximum difference in stress before and after LSP, and the depth up to which the compressive residual stress exists. Plastic strain profiles are quantified by one variable, the maximum equivalent plastic strain at the surface. The proposed profiles are validated by comparing with published LSP experimental results for welded plates. Effects of the initial welding residual stress and the number of shots on these variables are discussed. The proposed profile can be directly applied to predict the mitigation effect of LSP on PWSCC and to efficiently perform structural integrity assessment of laser peened nuclear components.

In this paper, smooth and notched bar tensile tests of austenitic stainless steel 304 are performed, covering four different multi-axial stress states and six different strain rate conditions, to investigate the effect of the stress triaxiality and strain rate on fracture strain. Test data show that the measured true fracture strain tends to decrease with increasing stress triaxiality and strain rate. The test data are then quantified using the Johnson-Cook (J-C) fracture strain model incorporating combined effects of the stress triaxiality and strain rate. The determined J-C model can predict true fracture strain overall conservatively with the difference less than 20%. The conservatism in the strain-based acceptance criteria in ASME B&PV Code, Section III, Appendix FF is also discussed.

The effect of the material hardening model of the canister on a finite element vertical cask drop simulation is investigated for the strain-based acceptance evaluation. Three different hardening models are considered in this paper: the isotropic hardening model, the strain rate-dependent Johnson-Cook (J-C) hardening model, and the modified J-C model which are believed to be the most accurate. By comparing the results using the modified J-C model, it is found that the use of the J-C model provides similar or larger stresses and strains depending on the magnitudes of the strain and strain rate. The use of the isotropic hardening model always yields larger stresses and strains. For the strain-based acceptance evaluation, the use of the isotropic hardening model can produce highly conservative assessment results. The use of the J-C model, however, produces satisfactory results.

A piping system stress analysis need to be re-performed for structural integrity assessment after reinforcement of a pipe with significant wall thinning. For efficient stress analysis, a one-dimensional beam element for the wall-thinned pipe with reinforcement needs to be developed. To develop the beam element, this work presents analytical equations for elastic stiffness of the wall-thinned pipe with reinforcement are analytically derived for axial tension, bending and torsion. Comparison with finite element (FE) analysis results using detailed three-dimensional solid models for wall-thinned pipe with reinforcement shows good agreement. Implementation of the proposed solutions into commercial FE programs is explained.

As a part of round robin analysis to develop a finite element elastic-plastic seismic analysis procedure for nuclear safety class 1 components, a series of parametric analyses was carried out on the simulated pressurizer surge line system model to investigate sensitivity of the analysis results to finite element analysis variables. The analysis on the surge line system model considered dynamic effect due to the seismic load corresponding to PGA 0.6 g and elastic-plastic material behavior based on the Chaboche combined hardening model. From the parametric analysis results, it was found that strains such as accumulated equivalent plastic strain and equivalent plastic strain are more sensitive to the analysis variables than von Mises effect stress. The parametric analysis results also identified that finite element density and ovalization option in the elbow elements have more significant effect on the analysis results than the other variables.

This paper presents experimental and numerical analysis results regarding the effects of an incomplete penetration defect on the fatigue lives of socket welded pipes. For the experiment, four-point bending fatigue tests with various defect geometries (defect depth and circumferential length) were performed, and test results are presented in terms of stress-life data. The results showed that for circumferentially short defects, the fatigue life tends to increase with increasing crack depth, but for longer defects, the trend becomes the opposite. Finite element analysis showed that for short defects, the maximum principal stress decreases with increases in crack depth. For a longer defect, the opposite trend was found. Furthermore, the maximum principal stress tends to increase with an increase in defect length regardless of the defect depth.

This paper presents thermal aging effect on fracture toughness properties of GTAW (gas tungsten arc welding) and SMAW (shielded metal arc welding) of 316L stainless steels, and investigates the applicability of the existing three thermal aging models for CASS (cast stainless steels). Thermal aging was carried out at 350 °C for up to 15,000h and at 400 °C up to 8,000h. After aging, tensile and fracture toughness tests using 0.5T C(T) specimens were carried out at room temperature and at 288 °C. Comparing with the predictions using three (ANL, French and H3T) thermal aging models for CASS show that the predictions can be very non-conservative at operating temperature, and thus that the existing thermal aging models for CASS cannot be applied to the welded stainless steels.

This paper suggests a fracture simulation method for SFR metallic fuel pin under accident condition. Two major failure mechanisms - creep damage and eutectic penetration - are implemented in the suggested method. To simulate damaged element, stress-reduction concept to reduce stiffness of the damaged element is applied. Using the proposed method, the failure size of cladding can be predicted in addition to the failure time and failure site. To verify the suggested method, Whole-pin furnace (WPF) test and TREAT-M test conducted at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) are simulated. In all cases, predicted results and experimental results are overall in good agreement. Based on the simulation result, the effect of eutectic-penetration depth representing failure behavior on failure size is studied.

This paper presents numerical estimation of burst pressures of axial cracked U-bend tubes, considering the U-bending process analysis. The validity of the FE simulations is confirmed by comparing with published experimental data. From parametric analyses, it is shown that existing EPRI burst pressure estimation equations for straight tubes can be conservatively used to estimate burst pressures of the U-bend tubes. This is due to the increase in yield strength during the U-bending process. The degree of conservatism would decrease with increasing the bend radius and with increasing the crack depth.

This paper provides further validation of the burst pressure estimation equations for multiple axial surface cracked steam generator tubes, recently proposed by the authors based on analytical local collapse load approach against systematic FE damage analysis results of Alloy 690 tubes with twin axial surface cracks. Wide ranges of the relative crack depth and multiple crack configurations are considered. Comparison shows good agreements, giving sufficient confidence of the proposed equations. In this study, a corrosion pit test using notched bar specimens was conducted to investigate the effect of stress magnitude on the pit growth rate. To produce the notched bar specimens, 304 austenitic stainless steel was used, which is a material used for spent nuclear fuel canisters. Furthermore, three levels of stresses were generated using different notch radii. The corrosion pits were quantitatively measured through scanning electron microscopy and analyzed by finite element analysis. Based on experimental data, the pit growth rate model is suggested in terms of the stress and exposure time.

This paper presents a numerical method to simulate ductile tearing in cracked components under high strain rates using finite element damage analysis. The strain rate dependence on tensile properties and multiaxial fracture strain is characterized by the model developed by Johnson and Cook. The damage model is then defined based on the ductility exhaustion concept using the strain rate dependent multiaxial fracture strain concept. The proposed model is applied to simulate previously published three cracked pipe bending test results under two different test speed conditions. Simulated results show overall good agreement with experimental results.

We propose a primary water stress corrosion cracking (PWSCC) initiation model of Alloy 600 that considers the stress triaxiality factor to apply to finite element analysis. We investigated the correlation between stress triaxiality effects and PWSCC growth behavior in cold-worked Alloy 600 stream generator tubes, and identified an additional stress triaxiality factor that can be added to Garud's PWSCC initiation model. By applying the proposed PWSCC initiation model considering the stress triaxiality factor, PWSCC growth simulations based on the macroscopic phenomenological damage mechanics approach were carried out on the PWSCC growth tests of various cold-worked Alloy 600 steam generator tubes and compact tension specimens. As a result, PWSCC growth behavior results from the finite element prediction are in good agreement with the experimental results.

In this paper, the feasibility study to develop strain-based seismic design criteria applicable for the components of nuclear power plants are carried out as an alternative rule to the current stress-based criteria. To do this, two acceptance criteria are investigated through the detailed example of an application for the surge line nozzles in a nuclear steam supply system, which are known as one of the seismic fragile components in nuclear power plants. These strain-based seismic design criteria are primarily to prevent two types of failure modes, such as a ductile fracture and a cyclic fatigue-induced damage due to continuous large amplitude cyclic loads during seismic event. Through the example problem, the required procedures are described step-by-step with calculations of an accumulated plastic strain, triaxiality factor by the elasto-plastic seismic analysis using the finite element method. For a precise inelastic seismic analysis, the Chaboche kinematic and Voce isotropic hardening material parameters are identified by the test data and used for an inelastic material model. The results by the strain-based criteria are compared with those by the ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) stress-based design criteria for a service level D limits. From the study, it is expected that the strain-based seismic design method investigated in this paper will be beneficial for the nuclear components, especially when the design basis earthquakes are large enough to cause severe plastic strains at a critical location.

This paper proposes strain-based acceptance criteria for assessing plastic instability of the safety class 1 nuclear components made of ferritic steel during level D service loads. The strain-based criteria were proposed with two approaches: (1) a section average approach and (2) a critical location approach. Both approaches were based on the damage initiation point corresponding to the maximum load-carrying capability point instead of the fracture point via tensile tests and finite element analysis (FEA) for the notched specimen under uni-axial tensile loading. The two proposed criteria were reviewed from the viewpoint of design practice and philosophy to select a more appropriate criterion. As a result of the review, it was found that the section average approach is more appropriate than the critical location approach from the viewpoint of design practice and philosophy. Finally, the criterion based on the section average approach was applied to a simplified reactor pressure vessel (RPV) outlet nozzle subject to SSE loads. The application shows that the strain-based acceptance criteria can consider cumulative damages caused by the sequential loads unlike the stress-based acceptance criteria and can reduce the overconservatism of the stress-based acceptance criteria, which often occurs for level D service loads.

Bacteria in the Desulfovibrionaceae family, which contribute to S element turnover as sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) and disproportionation of partially oxidized sulfoxy anions, have been extensively investigated since the importance of the sulfur cycle emerged. Novel species belonging to this taxon are frequently reported, because they exist in various environments and are easy to culture using established methods. Due to the rapid expansion of the taxon, correction and reclassification have been conducted. The development of high-throughput sequencing facilitated rapid expansion of genome sequence database. Genome-based criteria, based on these databases, proved to be potential classification standard by overcoming the limitations of 16S rRNA-based phylogeny. Although standards methods for taxogenomics are being established, the addition of a novel genus requires extensive calculations with taxa, including many species, such as Desulfovibrionaceae. Thus, the genome-based criteria for classification of Desulfovibrionaceae were established and validated in this study. The average amino-acid identity (AAI) cut-off value, 63.43 ± 0.01, was calculated to be an appropriate criterion for genus delineation of the family Desulfovibrionaceae. By applying the AAI cut-off value, 88 genomes of the Desulfovibrionaceae were divided into 27 genera, which follows the core gene phylogeny results. In this process, two novel genera (Alkalidesulfovibrio and Salidesulfovibrio) and one former invalid genus (“Psychrodesulfovibrio”) were officially proposed. Further, by applying the 95–96% average nucleotide identity (ANI) standard and the 70% digital DNA–DNA hybridization standard values for species delineation of strains that were classified as the same species, five strains have the potential to be newly classified. After verifying that the classification was appropriately performed through relative synonymous codon usage analysis, common characteristics were listed by group. In addition, by detecting metal resistance related genes via in silico analysis, it was confirmed that most strains display metal tolerance.

Acetogenic bacteria can utilize C1 compounds, such as carbon monoxide (CO), formate, and methanol, via the Wood-Ljungdahl pathway (WLP) to produce biofuels and biochemicals. Two novel acetogenic bacteria of the family Eubacteriaceae ES2 and ES3 were isolated from Eulsukdo, a delta island in South Korea. We conducted whole genome sequencing of the ES strains and comparative genome analysis on the core clusters of WLP with Acetobacterium woodii DSM1030T and Eubacterium limosum ATCC8486T. The methyl-branch cluster included a formate transporter and duplicates or triplicates copies of the fhs gene, which encodes formyltetrahydrofolate synthetase. The formate dehydrogenase cluster did not include the hydrogenase gene, which might be replaced by a functional complex with a separate electron bifurcating hydrogenase (HytABCDE). Additionally, duplicated copies of the acsB gene, encoding acetyl-CoA synthase, are located within or close to the carbonyl-branch cluster. The serum bottle culture showed that ES strains can utilize a diverse range of C1 compounds, including CO, formate, and methanol, as well as CO2. Notably, ES2 exhibited remarkable resistance to high concentrations of C1 substrates, such as 100% CO (200 kPa), 700 mM formate, and 500 mM methanol. Moreover, ES2 demonstrated remarkable growth rates under 50% CO (0.45 h-1) and 200 mM formate (0.34 h-1). These growth rates are comparable to or surpassing those previously reported in other acetogenic bacteria. Our study introduces novel acetogenic ES strains and describes their genetic and physiological characteristics, which can be utilized in C1-based biomanufacturing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
