Understanding the dynamics of sediment transport and their underlying driving mechanisms is critical to developing strategic plans for sustainable river basin management. However, the quantification of various drivers (e.g., dam construction, soil and water conservation measures) of sediment load change remains scarce, and the projections of sediment transport under the 1.5 °C and 2.0 °C global warming scenarios are not well understood. Here we quantify the sediment load dynamics in the Yangtze River and also estimate the relative contributions of climate change and human activities to these changes using the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) hydrologic model and statistical methods. Results show that the sediment load exhibited a significant decreasing trend at most stations in the Yangtze River, with breakpoints occurring around 1993 and 2003. The study period of 1972-2016 can be split into three sub-periods: 1972-1992 (P1), 1993-2003 (P2), and 2004-2016 (P3). From P1 to P3, 95.6 % of the decline can be attributed to climate change, the remainder resulting from the construction of dams and reservoirs (3.6 %) and improved soil and water conservation (0.8 %). Specifically, human activities contributed ∼67.96 % to sediment changes during the period P1-P2, whereas climatic change contributed ∼81.76 % during the period P2-P3. Understanding the sustainable development goal (SDG) 11.3.1-ratio of land consumption rate (LCR) to population growth rate (PGR) is an important prerequisite for planning a guide for sustainable urbanization. However, little is known regarding the degree of accuracy of the estimated LCR due to the inconsistency of data on built-up areas. We extracted four built-up areas, based on inverse S-shaped law and area proportion method, and produced more precise built-up area data (LS_BUA) for the period 2000–2015. Chinese population density data in 2000–2015 was generated based on 26 million points of interest, 19 million roads, other multi-source data, and random forest (RF). Finally, the coupling between LCR and PGR for 340 Chinese cities was calculated during the same period. The results showed that (1) the accuracy of LS_BUA was higher than that of the other built-up area data production methods; (2) the accuracy of test sets in RF exceeded 0.86; (3) the LCR value of mainland China was 0.024 and the PGR value was 0.019 during 2000–2015. The LCR consistently exceeded the PGR and the coordination relationship between LCR and PGR continued to deteriorate. Our research eliminated the difference of SDG 11.3.1 from different data sources and could therefore help decision makers balance land consumption and population growth.

The oxygen vacancy in MnO2 is normally proved as the reactive site for the catalytic ozonation, and acquiring a highly reactive crystal facet with abundant oxygen vacancy by facet engineering is advisable for boosting the catalytic activity. In this study, three facet-engineered α-MnO2 was prepared and successfully utilized for catalytic ozonation toward an odorous CH3SH. The as-synthesized 310-MnO2 exhibited superior activity in catalytic ozonation of CH3SH than that of 110-MnO2 and 100-MnO2, which could achieve 100% removal efficiency for 70 ppm of CH3SH within 20 min. The results of XPS, Raman, H2-TPR, and DFT calculation all prove that the (310) facets possess a higher surface energy than other facets can feature the construction of oxygen vacancies, thus facilitating the adsorption and activate O3 into intermediate peroxide species (O2-/O22-) and reactive oxygen species (•O2-/1O2) for eliminating adjacent CH3SH. In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (in situ DRIFTS) revealed that the CH3SH molecular was chemisorbed on S atom to form CH3S-, which was further converted into intermediate CH3SO3- and finally oxidized into SO42- and CO32-/CO2 during the process. Attributed to the deep oxidation of CH3SH on 310-MnO2 via efficient cycling of active oxygen vacancies, the lifetime of 310-MnO2 can be extended to 2.5 h with limited loss of activity, while 110-MnO2 and 100-MnO2 were inactivated within 1 h. This study deepens the comprehension of facet-engineering in MnO2 and presents an efficient and portable catalyst to control odorous pollution.

A huge number of scientific research institutions and scholars are now researching this topic in depth, with promising results. Meanwhile, research development in dance visual frequency movement detection is rather modest due to the high complexity of dance movement and the challenges of human body self-shielding in dance performance. Aiming at the problem of the combination of motion recognition and dance video, the feature extraction, representation, and motion recognition methods based on dance video are emphatically studied. This paper studies an effective feature extraction method according to the characteristics of dance movements. Firstly, each dance movement video in the data set is separated into equal sections, and the edge characteristics of all video pictures in each segment are gathered into one image, from which the direction gradient histogram features are extracted. Secondly, a group of directional gradient histogram feature vectors is used to represent the local appearance information and shape features of the video dance moves. In view of the existing problem of heterogeneous feature fusion, this paper chooses the multi-core learning method to fuse the three kinds of features for dance movement recognition. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed dance movement detection algorithm is tested using the Dance DB data set from the University of Cyprus and the Folk Dance data set from my laboratory. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can maintain a certain recognition rate for relatively complex dance movements and can still ensure a certain accuracy when the background and target are easily confused. This also confirms the efficacy of the movement recognition system used in this paper for recognizing dance movements.

Sediment transport from rivers to ocean is increasingly influenced by climate change and intensive human activities1, constituting a research priority of global relevance2. However, little attention has been paid to quantify and predict the contribution of driving factors to the sediment load. By integrating local-scale hydrologic modeling with soil erosion estimation model, and the soil erosion and sediment yield balance equation, we quantify watershed-scale changes in sediment load under forecasted climate change and human activities in the Yangtze River Basin (YRB), China. We also develop a new metric, the sediment load sensitivity index, that identifies sensitive to anthropogenic variability over the past 30 years. It was found that the reservoirs deposition was the primary factor (81.37 %) among human activities contributing to the decline in sediment load, followed by the soil and water conservation measures (SWCM) (18.63 %). The sediment load shows a slight increasing trend for the 1.5 °C and 2.0 °C global warming at 2020–2039 and 2040–2059, respectively. Climate change dominates the sediment load trend in the future due to the effectiveness of dams and reservoirs decreases and the saturation of the capacity of the SWCM to capture sediment. Although these findings indicate the importance of the impact of climate change on changes in sediment load, it is necessary to apply them to appropriate management to adapt to climate changes in future river basin management policies.

Atomic level Ag loaded MnO2 porous hollow microspheres (Ag/MnO2 PHMs) were prepared by redox precipitation method, and utilized for E. coli inactivation under solar light irradiation. Ag nanoparticles (NPs) can be downsized into single atoms, thereby realizing highly utilization of Ag element as well as achieving superior photothermocatalytic E. coli inactivation for Ag/MnO2 than MnO2 PHMs. Under attack by the optimal 0.3%Ag/MnO2 PHMs with atomic Ag, 7.11 log10 cfu/mL cells can be completely inactivated within 10 min, much faster than the 0.3%Ag/MnO2 PHMs with Ag cluster (3.3 log10 cfu/mL) prepared by photodeposition method, demonstrating the feasibility of redox precipitation to prepare efficient catalyst for water disinfection. Three effects are believed to contribute to this bacterial inactivation enhancement: (1) atomic Ag with high conductivity induces more formation of Mn3+ and oxygen vacancies in MnO2, which can efficiently accelerate the separation of hot electrons and holes generated by MnO2, collectively work with itself generated hot electrons to form into reactive species for photocatalysis; (2) atomic Ag exhibits strong local heating effect and induces higher reducibility for MnO2, considerably enhances the photothermal conversion and lattice oxygen activity of MnO2, thus promoting the thermocatalysis; and (3) the synergism of solar light driven photocatalysis and thermocatalysis through the activated OL. The highly efficient photothermocatalysis make the designed 3D atomic Ag/MnO2 PHMs have a promising antibacterial ability for cleaning the microbial contaminated water environment.

Understanding the spatial distribution of populations at a finer spatial scale has important value for many applications, such as disaster risk rescue operations, business decision-making, and regional planning. In this study, a random forest (RF)-based population density mapping method was proposed in order to generate high-precision population density data with a 100 m × 100 m grid in mainland China in 2015 (hereafter referred to as ‘Popi’). Besides the commonly used elevation, slope, Normalized Vegetation Index (NDVI), land use/land cover, roads, and National Polar Orbiting Partnership/Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (NPP/VIIRS), 16,101,762 records of points of interest (POIs) and 2867 county-level censuses were used in order to develop the model. Furthermore, 28,505 township-level censuses (74% of the total number of townships) were collected in order to evaluate the accuracy of the Popi product. The results showed that the utilization of multi-source data (especially the combination of POIs and NPP/VIIRS data) can effectively improve the accuracy of population mapping at a finer scale. The feature importances of the POIs and NPP/VIIRS are 0.49 and 0.14, respectively, which are higher values than those obtained for other natural factors. Compared with the Worldpop population dataset, the Popi data exhibited a higher accuracy. The number of accurately-estimated townships was 19,300 (67.7%) in the Popi product and 16,237 (56.9%) in the Worldpop product. The Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) and Mean Absolute Error (MAE) were 14,839 and 7218, respectively, for Popi, and 18,014 and 8572, respectively, for Worldpop. The research method in this paper could provide a reference for the spatialization of other socioeconomic data (such as GDP).

In this study, a natural occurring ilmenite was successfully developed as an efficient catalyst/photocatalyst for bacterial inactivation coupling with persulfate (PS) under visible light (Vis) irradiation. The excellent bacterial inactivation is demonstrated by the result that the bactericidal efficiency in the ilmenite/PS/Vis process reached 6 log10 cfu/mL within 30 min as compared to that of 1.5 log10 cfu/mL for the ilmenite/Vis process and 4 log10 cfu/mL for the ilmenite/PS under same conditions. Integrated with the electron paramagnetic resonance analysis, electrochemical measurements and photoluminescence spectroscopic analysis, the enhanced performance was attributed to the accelerated capture of photo-generated electrons by PS and ≡Fe(II) of ilmenite promoted PS activation vice versa to collectively generate more radicals for E. coli inactivation in the ilmenite/PS/Vis process. For the first time, the generation of singlet oxygen (1O2) was proved to be the primary bactericidal agent other than SO4− and O2−, which caused leakage and mineralization of E. coli intracellular components. Impressively, the 1O2-mediated ilmenite/PS/Vis system showed good inactivation performance in authentic water body and maintained good reusability in the pilot-scale 25 L reactor. This work highlights the great potential of natural ilmenite as catalyst and elucidated a new opportunity for persulfate remediation of controlling microbial water contaminants.

An important feature of the relationships among ecosystem services (ESs) is that they have temporal and spatial patterns. The purpose of this research is to understand the relationship between various ESs and to optimize the structure of the ecosystem to ensure the sustainable development of the Guanzhong Basin region. The spatio-temporal synergies and trade-offs among ESs in Guanzhong Basin were analysed using correlation analysis and time-lagged cross-correlation analysis to quantitatively analyze the relationships between the three types of ESs (food production (FP), water retention (WR) and soil conservation (SC)) based on grid-cells. The results of this study were as follows: (1) The spatio-temporal synergies and trade-offs between FP and WR, FP and SC, and WR and SC were widespread in Guanzhong Basin. If a region's synergies and trade-offs are weak, ES interactions can easily be changed from synergies to trade-offs or from trade-offs to synergies under the influence of policies and planning (e.g., Reforestation of Cultivated Land (RFCL)); (2) the order of three paired ES interactions in different land use types were cultivated land > unused land > pasture > forest land, and this order remained relatively stable; (3) the greater the time-lagged correlation coefficient among the ESs, the shorter the time-lag. Thus, the conclusion is that correlation analysis and time-lagged cross-correlation analysis can be used for spatially explicit quantification of the spatial-temporal ES interactions based on grid-cells and can help to identify spatial heterogeneity of ES trade-offs and synergies. This study will help to broaden the depth and breadth of trade-off and synergy in ES to provide a case for practical eco-management under local conditions.

In this study, Ag deposited three-dimensional MnO2 porous hollow microspheres (Ag/MnO2 PHMSs) with high dispersion of the atom level Ag species are first prepared by a novel method of redox precipitation. Due to the highly efficient utilization of downsized Ag nanoparticles, the optimal 0.3% Ag/MnO2 PHMSs can completely degrade 70 ppm CH3SH within 600 s, much higher than that of MnO2 PHMSs (79%). Additionally, the catalyst retains long-term stability and can be regenerated to its initial activity through regeneration with ethanol and HCl. The results of characterization of Ag/MnO2 PHMSs and catalytic performance tests clearly demonstrate that the proper amount of Ag incorporation not only facilitates the chemi-adsorption but also induces more formation of vacancy oxygen (Ov) and lattice oxygen (OL) in MnO2 as well as Ag species as activation sites to collectively favor the catalytic ozonation of CH3SH. The continuous rotation electron diffraction (cRED) method has the capability of providing fast three-dimensional electron diffraction data collection on existing and future transmission electron microscopes; unknown structures could be potentially solved and refined using cRED data collected from nano- and submicrometre-sized crystals. However, structure refinements of cRED data using SHELXL often lead to relatively high R1 values when compared with those refined against single-crystal X-ray diffraction data. It is therefore necessary to analyse the quality of the structural models refined against cRED data. In this work, multiple cRED data sets collected from different crystals of an oxofluoride (FeSeO3F) and a zeolite (ZSM-5) with known structures are used to assess the data consistency and quality and, more importantly, the accuracy of the structural models refined against these data sets. An evaluation of the precision and consistency of the cRED data by examination of the statistics obtained from the data processing software DIALS is presented. It is shown that, despite the high R1 values caused by dynamical scattering and other factors, the refined atomic positions obtained from the cRED data collected for different crystals are consistent with those of the reference models refined against single-crystal X-ray diffraction data. The results serve as a reference for the quality of the cRED data and the achievable accuracy of the structural parameters.

Hierarchical porous sludge-derived activated carbon coated on macroporous silicon carbide (SiC) foams substrate has been facilely fabricated via a simple one-step strategy by utilizing sludge as carbon source, and jointly using zinc chloride and hexadecanol as pore forming agents. The sludge-derived carbon has been confirmed to be hierarchical macro-meso-microporous structure based on detailed characterization by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectra and nitrogen adsorption-desorption measurement. The adsorption tests showed that the hierarchical porous sludge-derived activated carbon fabricated by one-step pore-forming (zinc chloride and hexadecanol microemulsion mixture) possesses excellent adsorption capacity (259.9mgg-1, breakthrough time reach 90min and saturation end-time up to 140min) of methyl mercaptan (CH3SH). The excellent adsorption performance can be attributed to the macroporous SiC foam skeleton and the mesopores channel formed by nonionic surfactant hexadecanol micelles, as well as the micropores activated by ZnCl2 as odor capture sites. The proposed pore-forming strategy paves an avenue for the sludge disposal and even the development of bio-derived materials.

Silicogermanate (JU110) with an interrupted open-framework has been synthesized by using a hydrothermal method using 1,1′-(1,4-phenylenebis(methylene))bis(1-methylpyrrolidin-1-ium) hydroxide as an organic structure-directing agent (OSDA). Silicon and fluoride anions were introduced to the concentrated-gel synthesis system, and different synthetic parameters influencing the synthesis were discussed. The structure of JU110 was characterised by using rotation electron diffraction (RED) and high-resolution powder X-ray diffraction. JU110 crystallizes in the space group Fm2m (No. 42) with a = 13.9117(2) A, b = 18.2980(3) A and c = 32.7800(6) A. The structure is constructed by the sti layers found in the STI framework that are pillared by D4R/Ge7 units to form a large cavity, showing 10-ring openings along [100] and 9-ring openings along [110]. Thermal stability studies showed that the framework was maintained with the loss of water molecules, but collapsed with the removal of charge-compensating cations.

This study developed a novel method based on piezoelectric catalytic persulfate (PS) activation for water advanced disinfection. Silver modified barium titanate (Ag-BTO) was synthesized and utilized as a piezoelectric catalyst to activate PS under ultrasonic vibration (US) for Escherichia coli inactivation. The newly developed US/Ag-BTO/PS process achieved a 6.2 log inactivation within 5 min and 20 min, respectively, for E. coli at culturable state and viable but nonculturable (VBNC) state. The high efficiency on E. coli inactivation was contributed by the successive generation of hydroxyl radicals and sulfate radicals via PS activation by piezo-catalytically generated electrons and superoxide radicals. Interestingly and more importantly, a synergism between ultrasonication and radical oxidation was found by using the US/Ag-BTO/PS process for E. coli inactivation. The ultrasonication disrupted cell membrane of E. coli, accelerated the permeation of the radicals and enhanced the following inner metabolic dysfunction and enzyme oxidation by radicals. The catalyst maintained a good stability and reusability, and the efficacy of the new disinfection strategy was also demonstrated in real wastewater effluent and surface water. The findings in this study suggest the merit of using the US/Ag-BTO/PS process for water advanced disinfection and provide an alternative solution in addressing the issue of microbial resurrection after conventional water disinfection treatment.

In order to grasp the latest changes in the quality and quantity of domestic sewage in the Taihu Lake Basin and Chaohu Lake Basin, and to scientifically guide the construction of rural sewage treatment demonstration projects, two typical villages were selected from Taihu Lake Basin and Chaohu Lake Basin respectively for fieldwork continuous monitoring of sewage water quality and quantity. The results show that the typical rural per capita daily drainage in the plain area of the Taihu Lake Basin in summer is 89.4 L·cap−1·d−1, which is significantly higher than that in the typical rural area of the Chaohu Lake Basin (56.5 L·cap−1·d−1). The amount of sewage hourly discharge fluctuated distinctly, and the coefficient of variation of sewage discharge in the two villages ranged from 2.4 to 6.1, showing obvious characteristics of “morning and evening peaks” or “morning, noon and evening peaks”. In addition, the rural sewage water quality in the two places shows the same pattern, and the pollutant concentration of sewage from different sources is significantly different. It was found that the toilet-flush sewage in Wangjiatang village provided 84.42% of TN and 92.94% of NH4 +-N in the total domestic sewage, while toilet-flush sewage in Qianying village provided 74.31% of TN and 84.56% of NH4 +-N in the total domestic. Therefore, when constructing a sewage treatment demonstration project, the ideological principles of sewage classification and treatment from the source should be considered.

The immobilization of a photocatalyst on a proper support is pivotal for practical environmental applications. Herein, as a rising visible light photocatalyst, different facet-engineered Ag3PO4{111}, Ag3PO4{110}, Ag3PO4{100} and irregular Ag3PO4 were first immobilized on mesoporous Al2O3, then applied for photocatalytic removal of ppm-leveled NO under visible light illumination. Photocatalytic performances for NO removal by these immobilized Ag3PO4 were found to be highly facet-dependent, showing the degradation kinetics in the order of Ag3PO4{111} tetrahedra > Ag3PO4{110} rhombic dodecahedra > Ag3PO4{100} cubes > irregular Ag3PO4. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations were used to investigate the difference in the catalytic activity of Ag3PO4/Al2O3 with exposed {111}, {110}, and {100} facets. The experimental characterization and theoretical calculations all confirm that the {111} facets with high surface energy can not only facilitate adsorption/activation of O2 and H2O but also be beneficial to the generation of •O2− and •OH radicals, which result in significantly enhanced activity for NO oxidation. A modified band diagram showing diff ;erent degrees of band edge bending can explain these observations. A reaction pathway study based on both in situ FT-IR and molecular-level simulation of NO adsorption and transformation indicates that this Ag3PO4{111}/Al2O3 can efficiently adsorb NO and transform it into harmless nitrate products via NO → NO+ and NO2+ → nitrate or nitrite routes. The present work reveals the facet-dependent radical formation mechanisms of Ag3PO4/Al2O3, and also provides new perspectives for promoting environmental applications of immobilized photocatalysts.

The Mu Us Sandland is basically characterized by water shortage and high wind. Thus, wind-induced mechanical perturbation (MP) and soil water availability are likely to interact to affect plant growth. Since high water availability and MP can induce responses that are in the opposite direction, we hypothesized that MP effects on perennial grasses might be mitigated by increased soil water availability in the Mu Us Sandland. We counducted an experiment in which seedlings of Psammochloa villosa were subjected to two levels of MP (non-MP vs. MP 1 min d−1) and two levels of water availability (200 ml d−1 vs. 400 ml d−1) and measured three plant traits. MP significantly decreased plant height, total biomass, and root/shoot ratio. There were significant interactions between MP and soil water availability on plant height and root/shoot ratio. These findings imply that MP alone is a stressful factor for P. villosa and MP effects on its growth can be partially mitigated by increased soil water availability, and also suggest that P. villosa may respond to MP in a way that allows plants to survive in the windy semiarid environments.

Spacing behavior is important to the population regulation and social organization of rodents. However, little is known regarding the factors influencing space use by rodent social groups. We tested the hypotheses that food resources in the typical steppe would be so abundant that food availability would not be a limiting factor of home-range sizes of social groups of Mongolian gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus). We also assessed the effects of social organization on the home-range size of social groups of gerbils, using capture–recapture methods. Home ranges of social groups of Mongolian gerbils did not differ in size between the breeding and non-breeding periods; however, home ranges overlapped more during the breeding period than during the non-breeding period. Overlap of home ranges might allow male gerbils to access female mates of neighboring colonies during the breeding period. Home-range sizes of social groups were positively related to number of males during the breeding period, but positively related to group size and number of females during the non-breeding period. Therefore, social organization influenced home-range sizes of social groups. Our hypothesis that food availability is not a limiting factor of space use by social groups of Mongolian gerbils from spring through autumn was supported.

Since China's current energy structure is a development model of high energy consumption and high pollution, and coal is the main energy source, China's environmental pollution control has a long way to go. Based on this, this paper comprehensively analyzes the statistical description of the accounting in the pollution control project, establishes the optimization model of accounting fair value, and aims to achieve low carbon green environmental governance, and proposes a regression analysis environment based on the second element. Governance accounting model. The linear statistical method is used to calculate the fair value, combined with the payment level of environmental governance and the quality benefit level as the dependent variable, and the equilibrium game control is carried out to realize the green low carbon cost accounting. Finally, through empirical analysis, the regression analysis of the model is better, which leads to the optimization of environmental protection cost.

Findings show that in each dimension of CSR, the impact on sustainability is fair operation, labor practices, consumer issues, environment, responsibility for governance and community development from high to low in turn. As to economic development and human rights, there is no significant impact on sustainability, and human rights can affect sustainability negatively. Therefore, it is an effective way to promote transportation enterprises’ sustainability by enhancing CSR, performing CSR in stages and ensuring the priority of implementation of part enterprises’ CSR.
