This paper focuses on a method of rearview camera-based blind-spot detection and a lane change assistance system for autonomous vehicles, utilizing a convolutional neural network and lane detection. In this study, we propose a method for providing real-time warnings to autonomous vehicles and drivers regarding collision risks during lane-changing maneuvers. We propose a method for lane detection to delineate the area for blind-spot detection and for measuring time to collision—both utilized to ascertain the vehicle’s location and compensate for vertical vibrations caused by vehicle movement. The lane detection method uses edge detection on an input image to extract lane markings by employing edge pairs consisting of positive and negative edges. Lanes were extracted through third-polynomial fitting of the extracted lane markings, with each lane marking being tracked using the results from the previous frame detections. Using the vanishing point where the two lanes converge, the camera calibration information is updated to compensate for the vertical vibrations caused by vehicle movement. Additionally, the proposed method utilized YOLOv9 for object detection, leveraging lane information to define the region of interest (ROI) and detect small-sized objects. The object detection achieved a precision of 90.2% and a recall of 82.8%. The detected object information was subsequently used to calculate the collision risk. A collision risk assessment was performed for various objects using a three-level collision warning system that adapts to the relative speed of obstacles. The proposed method demonstrated a performance of 11.64 fps with an execution time of 85.87 ms. It provides real-time warnings to both drivers and autonomous vehicles regarding potential collisions with detected objects.

Abstract Statin therapy is essential for secondary prevention in patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). However, the effects of statin therapy in patients receiving chronic dialysis remain uncertain. We aimed to evaluate the effect of statin therapy on long-term mortality in patients on dialysis after a first-time ASCVD. Patients receiving maintenance dialysis aged ≥ 18 years with a first-time ASCVD event between 2013 and 2018 were included in the Korean National Health Insurance Service database. Associations of statin use with long-term mortality were examined using Cox proportional hazards regression models adjusted for demographics and comorbidities. Among 17,242 patients on dialysis, 9611 (55.7%) were prescribed statins after a first-time ASCVD event. Among statin users, 7376 (76.7%) used moderate-intensity statins. During a mean follow-up of 32.6 ± 20.9 months, statin use was associated with a lower risk of all-cause mortality than statin nonuse after adjusting for confounding factors (hazard ratio [HR]: 0.92; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.88–0.97; p = 0.0009). Despite a lack of evidence, more than half of patients on dialysis were prescribed statins after an ASCVD event. In patients on dialysis after ASCVD, statin therapy significantly reduced the risk of long-term all-cause mortality.

Background: Livestock excretions containing high concentration of nutrient, pig liquid fertilizer, and cattle manure were applied to agricultural land. The characteristics of nutrient transport were examined in surface runoff and groundwater by an artificial rainfall event at real scale field site. Also, the effects of the artificial rainfall event on the characteristics of residual soil after the rainfall and phosphorus adsorption capacity were evaluated in the lab. Results: As results from the field experiments, nitrogen concentration was decreased by the repeatable precipitation in surface runoff, but the nitrate concentration in groundwater was gradually increased by biological metabolism, especially with pig liquid fertilizer. Phosphorus was mostly adsorbed into the soil, and its reduction was affected by the soil drainage due to surface runoff in summer. The adsorption capacity of the phosphorus via a jar test was determined as 0.7 mg P/kg of soil. Conclusion: The soil adsorption capacity would be an important factor for the optimum level of nutrient application that is required for agricultural performance and minimal environmental impact.

Abstract Background The authors intend to compare the effects of each targeted therapy (TT) in the treatment of patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC) using big data based on the Korean National Health Insurance System (NHIS) and determine the optimal treatment sequence. Methods Data on the medical use of patients with kidney cancer were obtained from the NHIS database from January 1, 2002, to December 31, 2020. Patient variables included age, sex, income level, place of residence, prescribing department, and duration from diagnosis to the prescription date. The primary outcome was overall survival (OS) for each drug and sequencing. We performed propensity score matching (PSM) according to age, sex, and Charlson Comorbidity Index based on the primary TTs. Results After 1:1 PSM, the sunitinib (SUN) (n = 1,214) and pazopanib (PAZ) (n = 1,214) groups showed a well-matched distribution across the entire cohort. In the primary treatment group, PAZ had lower OS than SUN (HR, 1.167; p = 0.0015). In the secondary treatment group, axitinib (AXI) had more favorable OS than cabozantinib (CAB) (HR, 0.735; p = 0.0118), and everolimus had more adverse outcomes than CAB (HR, 1.544; p

Objective To identify factors that affect the participation of female immigrants in their 20s in the national cervical cancer screening programs. Methods Data were obtained from the National Health Insurance Services from 2016 to 2017. A total of 17,730 women who agreed to undergo cervical cancer screening during 2016–2017 were included in the study. Results Of the 17,730 women, 8,149 (46%) participated in cervical cancer screening, whereas, 9,581 (54%) did not. Logistic regression analysis of factors related to cervical cancer screening showed that the odds ratio (OR) of screening was higher in short duration of stay (OR, 1.18; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.03–1.35), Chinese nationality (OR, 1.43; 95% CI, 1.28–1.59), unemployment (OR, 1; 95% CI, reference), participation in general health screening (OR, 4.16; 95% CI, 3.24–5.33), and comorbidities (OR, 1.16; 95% CI, 1.09–1.24) when compared to the other populations. The highest OR was associated with participation in general health screening. Conclusion Appropriate programs should be developed to increase participation of socially vulnerable groups in cervical cancer screening. Such programs will improve awareness regarding cervical cancer screening and reduce disparities in healthcare.

This paper presents a PAM-4 receiver (RX) for CMOS image sensor (CIS) link. A robust baud-rate PAM-4 phase detector (PD) is proposed, which alleviates the dead zone issue encountered in the conventional sign-sign Mueller-Muller (SS-MM) PD when combined with an adaptive decision feedback equalizer (DFE). An optimum and unique locking point is reached by using a sign-sign minimum mean squared error (SS-MMSE) PD with a biased state which exhibits a constant probability for all phase error ranges. The proposed PD with the biased state evades the dead zone and prevents wandering. Furthermore, the phase-detecting transitions of the proposed SS-MMSE PD are 1.5 times higher compared to the conventional SS-MM PD. The proposed solution is verified with a prototype PAM-4 RX chip using 40-nm CMOS technology. It demonstrates a bit error rate (BER) of less than $10^{-9}$ with a 15.8 dB loss channel. The total power consumption is 46.6 mW at 12 Gb/s, achieving a figure of merit (energy efficiency per channel loss at Nyquist frequency) of 0.24 pJ/b/dB.

Background Whether the early use of sodium‐glucose cotransporter‐2 (SGLT2) inhibitors have cardioprotective effects following acute myocardial infarction is unknown. Thus, we aimed to evaluate the association between the early initiation of SGLT2 inhibitors and cardiac event rates in patients with diabetes with acute myocardial infarction undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention. Methods and Results Based on the National Health Insurance claims data in South Korea, patients who received percutaneous coronary intervention for acute myocardial infarction between 2014 and 2018 were analyzed. Patients given SGLT2 inhibitors or other glucose‐lowering drugs were matched based on a propensity score. The primary end point was a composite of all‐cause mortality and hospitalizations for heart failure. Major adverse cardiac events (a composite of all‐cause death, nonfatal myocardial infarction, and ischemic stroke) were compared as the secondary end point. After 1:2 propensity score matching, the SGLT2 inhibitors group (938 patients) and the no use of SGLT2 inhibitors group (1876 patients) were compared. During a median follow‐up of 2.1 years, the early use of SGLT2 inhibitors was associated with lower risks of both the primary end point (9.8% versus 13.9%; adjusted hazard ratio [HR], 0.68 [95% CI, 0.54–0.87]; P=0.002) and secondary end point (9.1% versus 11.6%; adjusted HR, 0.77 [95% CI, 0.60–0.99]; P=0.04). All‐cause mortality and hospitalizations for heart failure were also significantly lower in early users of SGLT2 inhibitors. Conclusions The early use of SGLT2 inhibitors in patients with diabetes treated with percutaneous coronary intervention for acute myocardial infarction was associated with a significantly lower risk of cardiovascular events, including all‐cause mortality, hospitalizations for heart failure, and major adverse cardiac events.

Purpose: We performed a nationwide epidemiological study of testicular torsion using the National Health Insurance System database for the entire male population of Korea. Materials and Methods: Age, sex, socioeconomic status, regional information, and diagnostic codes were retrieved from January 2009 to December 2019. To clearly identify the diagnosis of testicular torsion, patients who had not undergone orchiectomy or orchiopexy were excluded from the study. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to analyze the association between demographic characteristics and testicular loss. Results: The overall incidence of testicular torsion in males was 2.02 cases per 100,000 person-years and 6.99 cases per 100,000 person-years in males under 19 years of age. Testicular torsion most commonly occurred either in infancy or adolescence. The total testicular salvage rate was 75.22% and highest in children at 79.91%. The rate of orchiectomy was high in infancy and in the oldest patients. We determined that age distribution was related to the risk of testicular loss. Conclusions: This study is the first nationwide epidemiological study of testicular torsion, which contains the entire Korean population. Although the testicular salvage rate in Korea was higher compared to other countries, it is necessary to educate males under 19 years of age on the seriousness of acute testicular pain to minimize the possibility of testicular loss.

The transmembrane 4 L six family member 5 (TM4SF5) is aberrantly expressed in hepatocellular and colorectal cancers, and has been implicated in tumor progression, suggesting that it could serve as a novel therapeutic target. Previously, we screened a murine antibody phage-display library to generate a novel monoclonal antibody, Ab27, that is specific to the extracellular loop 2 of TM4SF5. In this study, we evaluated the effects of chimeric Ab27 using cancer cells expressing endogenous TM4SF5 or stably overexpressing TM4SF5 in vivo and in vitro. Monotherapy with Ab27 significantly decreased tumor growth in liver and colon cancer xenograft models, including a sorafenib-resistant model, and decreased the phosphorylation of focal adhesion kinase (FAK), p27Kip1, and signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3). No general Ab27 toxicity was observed in vivo. Combination treatment with Ab27 and sorafenib or doxorubicin exerted higher antitumor activity than monotherapy. In addition, we humanized the Ab27 sequence by the complementarity-determining region (CDR) grafting method. The humanized antibody Ab27-hz9 had reduced immunogenicity but exhibited target recognition and antitumor activity comparable with those of Ab27. Both Ab27 and Ab27-hz9 efficiently targeted tumor cells expressing TM4SF5 in vivo. These observations strongly support the further development of Ab27-hz9 as a novel therapeutic agent against liver and colorectal cancers.

BackgroundThe Government of South Korea launched a national preemptive latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) screening program in 2016, including more than 1. 6 million population in congregate settings. The objective of this study was to analyze LTBI prevalence and its risk factors in each setting. Additionally, the proportion of LTBI pool covered by the current national LTBI strategy was investigated.MethodsDatabase for results of interferon gamma release assay (IGRA), X-ray, and baseline demographic information was linked with National Health Information Database, national tuberculosis (TB) surveillance database, and national contact investigation database. Participants were categorized into three groups: Group A, workers of postpartum care centers, social welfare facilities and educational institutions; Group B, first year students in high school and out-of-school youths; and Group C, inmates of correctional facilities. Relative risks of LTBI by sex, age, place of living, income level, and comorbidities were calculated.ResultsA total of 444,394 participants in Group A, 272,224 participants in Group B, and 11,511 participants in Group C who participated in the national LTBI screening program between 2017 and 2018 were included, with LTBI prevalence of 20.7, 2.0, and 33.2%, respectively. Age was the single most important risk factor in Group A and Group C. Low-income level was another risk factor commonly identified in all groups. Among participants with positive IGRA results, 2.7, 4.4, and 3.3% in Groups A, B and C, respectively, had past TB exposure history since 2013. Current LTBI guideline targeting high or moderate TB risk disease covered 6.5, 0.6, and 1.1% of participants with positive IGRA results in Groups A, B and C, respectively.ConclusionOnly a small proportion of participants with positive IGRA results could be covered by the current LTBI strategy. Expansion of LTBI strategy by identifying further high-TB risk group in the general population is required.

Abstract Background Transmembrane serine protease 4 (TMPRSS4) is a cell surface–anchored serine protease. Elevated expression of TMPRSS4 correlates with poor prognosis in colorectal cancer, gastric cancer, prostate cancer, non–small cell lung cancer, and other cancers. Previously, we demonstrated that TMPRSS4 promotes invasion and proliferation of prostate cancer cells. Here, we investigated whether TMPRSS4 confers cancer stem–like properties to prostate cancer cells and characterized the underlying mechanisms. Methods Acquisition of cancer stem–like properties by TMPRSS4 was examined by monitoring anchorage-independent growth, tumorsphere formation, aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) activation, and resistance to anoikis and drugs in vitro and in an early metastasis model in vivo. The underlying molecular mechanisms were evaluated, focusing on stemness-related factors regulated by epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT)-inducing transcription factors. Clinical expression and significance of TMPRSS4 and stemness-associated factors were explored by analyzing datasets from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). Results TMPRSS4 promoted anchorage-independent growth, ALDH activation, tumorsphere formation, and therapeutic resistance of prostate cancer cells. In addition, TMPRSS4 promoted resistance to anoikis, thereby increasing survival of circulating tumor cells and promoting early metastasis. These features were accompanied by upregulation of stemness-related factors such as SOX2, BMI1, and CD133. SLUG and TWIST1, master EMT-inducing transcription factors, made essential contributions to TMPRSS4-mediated cancer stem cell (CSC) features through upregulation of SOX2. SLUG stabilized SOX2 via preventing proteasomal degradation through its interaction with SOX2, while TWIST1 upregulated transcription of SOX2 by interacting with the proximal E-box element in the SOX2 promoter. Clinical data showed that TMPRSS4 expression correlated with the levels of SOX2, PROM1, SNAI2, and TWIST1. Expression of SOX2 was positively correlated with that of TWIST1, but not with other EMT-inducing transcription factors, in various cancer cell lines. Conclusions Together, these findings suggest that TMPRSS4 promotes CSC features in prostate cancer through upregulation of the SLUG- and TWIST1-induced stem cell factor SOX2 beyond EMT. Thus, TMPRSS4/SLUG–TWIST1/SOX2 axis may represent a novel mechanism involved in the control of tumor progression.

BackgroundIn 2017, Korea implemented a nationwide project to screen and treat latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) in high-risk for transmission public congregate settings. We aimed to assess programme success using a cascade of care framework.Materials and methodsWe undertook a cohort study of people from three congregate settings screened between March 2017 and December 2018: (1) first-grade high school students, (2) employees of educational institutions, (3) employees of social welfare facilities. We report percentages of participants with LTBI completing each step in the cascade of care model. Poisson regression models were used to determine factors associated with not visiting clinics, not initiating treatment, and not completing treatment.ResultsAmong the 96,439 participants who had a positive interferon-gamma release assay result, the percentage visiting clinics for further assessment, to initiate treatment, and who then completed treatment were 50.7, 34.7, and 28.9%, respectively. Compared to those aged 20–34 years, individuals aged < 20 years and aged ≥ 65 years were less likely to visit clinics, though more likely to complete treatment once initiated. Using public health centres rather than private hospitals was associated with people “not initiating treatment” (adjusted risk ratio [aRR], 3.72; 95% confidence interval [CI], 3.95–3.86). Nine-month isoniazid monotherapy therapy was associated with “not completing treatment,” compared to 3-month isoniazid and rifampin therapy (aRR, 1.28; 95% CI, 1.16–1.41).ConclusionAmong participants with LTBI from three congregate settings, less than one third completed treatment. Age, treatment centre, and initial regimen were important determinants of losses to care through the cascade.

Aurantii Fructus Immaturus (AFI), extensively used in traditional herbal medicine, is known to have diverse physiological effects against various diseases, including obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. However, the effects of AFI on the immune system, especially natural killer (NK) cells, remain largely unknown. We aimed to investigate the effect of AFI on NK cell activity in vitro and in vivo and to elucidate the underlying mechanisms. Further, we verified the anticancer efficacy of AFI in a mouse lung metastasis model, underscoring the therapeutic potential of AFI in cancer therapy. Our results revealed that AFI significantly enhanced the cytolytic activity of NK cells in a dose-dependent manner, accompanied by an increase in the expression of NK cell-activating receptors, especially NKp30 and NKp46. AFI treatment also increased the expression of cytolytic granules, including granzyme B and perforin. Furthermore, the expression of CD107a, a degranulation marker, was increased upon treatment with AFI. A signaling study using western blot analysis demonstrated that the phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) was involved in increasing the NK cell activity following AFI treatment. In the in vivo study performed in mice, oral administration of AFI markedly enhanced the cytotoxic activity of spleen mononuclear cells against YAC-1 cells, which was accompanied by NKp46 upregulation. In addition, we confirmed that cancer metastasis was inhibited in a mouse cancer metastasis model, established using the mouse melanoma B16F10 cell line, by the administration of AFI in vivo. Collectively, these results indicate that AFI enhances NK cell-mediated cytotoxicity in vitro and in vivo via activation of the ERK signaling pathway and suggest that AFI could be a potential supplement for cancer immunotherapy.

Abstract Background TMEM52B is a novel gene broadly expressed in a variety of normal human tissues. However, the biological function of TMEM52B expression in cancer is largely unknown. Methods The effects of TMEM52B on tumor growth and metastasis were investigated in vitro and in vivo, and the underlying biological and molecular mechanisms involved in this process were evaluated. Clinical datasets from KmPlotter and The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) were analyzed in relation to TMEM52B expression and function. Results Suppression of TMEM52B in colon cancer cells promoted cancer cell epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), invasion, and survival in vitro. Similarly, in vivo studies showed increased tumor growth and circulating tumor cell survival (early metastasis). ERK1/2, JNK, and AKT signaling pathways were involved in TMEM52B suppression-induced invasiveness and cell survival. TMEM52B suppression promoted activation and internalization of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) with enhanced downstream signaling activity, leading to enhanced cell survival and invasion. In addition, TMEM52B suppression reduced E-cadherin stability, likely due to a reduced association between it and E-cadherin, which led to enhanced β-catenin transcriptional activity. Concomitantly, TMEM52B suppression promoted generation of soluble E-cadherin fragments, contributing to the activation of EGFR. Clinical data showed that high TMEM52B expression correlated with increased patient survival in multiple types of cancer, including breast, lung, kidney, and rectal cancers, and suggested a correlation between TMEM52B and E-cadherin. Conclusions These findings suggest that TMEM52B is a novel modulator of the interplay between E-cadherin and EGFR. It is possible that TMEM52B functions as a tumor-suppressor that could potentially be used as a novel prognostic marker for cancer.

Abstract Background We examined the association between obesity and prostate cancer based on both body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) using the National Health Insurance System (NHIS) database for the entire male population of Korea. Methods A total of 1,917,430 men who underwent at least one health examination in 2009 without a previous diagnosis of any other cancer were tracked through December 2015. The hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) value for the association between prostate cancer and obesity were analyzed using multiple Cox regression model. Since there was a statistically significant interaction between WC and BMI, a multiple HR for prostate cancer was estimated with stratifying both WC and BMI to control the interaction between WC and BMI. Results Without considering WC as an adjustment factor, very weak association between BMI and prostate cancer development risk was observed. When WC was considered as an adjustment factor, no significant change in the HRs for prostate cancer development beyond the reference BMI was observed in the group with WC

Background This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the association between osteoporosis and periodontal disease among Korean menopausal women, as well as the association between osteoporosis and periodontal disease according to duration after menopause. Methods Of a total of 22,948 subjects who participated in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, from 2013 to 2015 the final study population was limited to 2,573 subjects with no missing values. The subjects were divided into two groups, normal bone mineral density (BMD) and osteoporosis, according to the T-score obtained from bone densitometry. Scores of ≥ 3 points for the community periodontal index of treatment needs were reclassified as periodontal disease. Moreover, after stratification of the variable ‘duration after menopause’ into 0–4, 5–9, and ≥10 years, binary logistic regression analysis was performed to investigate the association between osteoporosis and periodontal disease according to the duration after menopause. Results There was an association between osteoporosis and periodontal disease. The osteoporosis group had an adjusted odds ratio [OR] of 1.25 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.00–1.56) for periodontal disease compared to the normal BMD group. Of note, the osteoporosis group in the menopausal transition stage (0–4 years after menopause) showed an adjusted OR of 2.08 (95% CI: 1.15–3.77) for developing periodontal disease. Conclusions Osteoporosis was associated with periodontal disease and the association was strongest among women in the menopausal transition stage, 0–4 years after menopause. Oral health promotion, including regular oral examination and oral hygiene care, is particularly useful for menopausal transition women with osteoporosis.

Abstract Background The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and periodontal disease in postmenopausal women using data from the 4th and 5th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). Methods The study included data from 5,482 postmenopausal women aged 45–74 years in the 2007–2012 KNHANES. The use of female HRT for at least one month was reclassified as HRT+/HRT-. The Community Periodontal Index of Treatment Needs (CPITN) was used to assess periodontal status. Propensity score matching (PSM) was used to control selection bias, and factors affecting education, family income, and age of menopause were used as covariates in PSM. A chi-square test was used to confirm the bivariate relationship between the variables. Binary logistic regression analysis was used to adjust for confounders (age, education, family income, body mass index, age of menopause, alcohol, smoking, dental clinic visits in the past one year, use of oral care products and frequency of tooth brushing per day). Results After adjusting for all covariates, HRT was associated with periodontal disease (OR: 0.79; 95% CI: 0.66–0.94). In particular, the relationship between HRT and periodontal disease was more evident in those with menopause under 45 years of age disease (OR: 0.55; 95% CI: 0.35–0.87). Conclusions The results of this study supported that it is important that hormone therapy be actively considered in the policy towards postmenopausal women. Especially, health programs such as hormone replacement therapy, non-smoking, and use of oral care products are needed for women who undergo premature menopause.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of CAEC (Canavalia gladiata arctium lappa extract complex) in adults with white blood cells between 3 and 8 × 103 cells/µL by assessing natural killer (NK) cell activity and immune-related biomarkers. Overall, 100 participants (CAEC group = 50, placebo group = 50) were randomised, and administered CAEC or placebo once daily for 8 weeks, with an evaluation visit performed every 4 weeks. NK cell activity, the primary outcome, significantly increased in CAEC when compared with the placebo at effector-to-target (E:T) ratios of 25:1 and 50:1 after 8 weeks. Compared with the placebo group, IL-10 demonstrated significant differences at week 8 in the CAEC group. Our findings demonstrate that CAEC is safe and enhances immune function by stimulating NK cell activity through IL-10 expression. Hence, we anticipate that CAEC can be developed as a functional food for stimulating immunity.

This paper introduces an automatic parking method using an around view monitoring system. In this method, parking lines are extracted from the camera images, and a route to a targeted parking slot is created. The vehicle then tracks this route to park. The proposed method extracts lines from images using a line filter and a Hough transform, and it uses a convolutional neural network to robustly extract parking lines from the environment. In addition, a parking path consisting of curved and straight sections is created and used to control the vehicle. Perpendicular, angle, and parallel parking paths can be created; however, parking control is applied according to the shape of each parking slot. The results of our experiments confirm that the proposed method has an average offset of 10.3 cm and an average heading angle error of 0.94°.

Nano-particles have been combined with antibiotics in recent studies to overcome multidrug-resistant bacteria. Here, we synthesized a nano-material in which Ag nano-particles were assembled with a ZnO nano-structure to form an Ag-ZnO (AZO) nano-composite at low temperature. This material was combined with erythromycin (Ery), an antibiotic effective towards gram-positive bacteria, using three different approaches (AZO + Ery (AZE) [centrifuged (AZE1), used separately after 1-h gap (AZE2), without centrifugation (AZE3)]) to prepare a nano-antibiotic against clinical isolates of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). X-ray diffraction analysis and transmission electron microscopy confirmed the presence of Ag nano-particles and ZnO nano-structure. The elemental and chemical state of the elements present in the AZO nano-composite were assessed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The antibacterial activity of AZE samples against both Escherichia coli and S. aureus strains including MRSA was evaluated in antibacterial and morphological analyses. The AZE3 sample showed greater antibacterial activity than the other samples and was comparable to erythromycin. AZE3 was ~20-fold less prone to developing bacterial resistance following multiple exposures to bacteria compared to erythromycin alone. The AZE3 nano-composite showed good biocompatibility with 293 human embryonic kidney cells. Our newly synthesized nano-platform antibiotics may be useful against multidrug-resistant gram-positive bacteria.

Natural killer (NK) cells play important roles in immune surveillance. However, the tumor microenvironment suppresses NK cell function and allows cancer cells to evade immune detection. In this study, we investigated whether the thyroid cancer cell microenvironment has this effect on NK cells. We found that prostaglandin (PG) E2 produced by thyroid cancer cells suppressed the cytolytic activity of NK cells by inhibiting the expression of the natural cytotoxicity receptors NKp44 and NKp30 and the death receptor tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand. PGE2 and cyclooxygenase-2 were highly expressed in thyroid cancer cells; moreover, anaplastic thyroid cancer cells released higher amounts of PGE2 than the papillary subtype, which was associated with suppression of NK cell-inducing nuclear factor-κB and mitogen-activated protein kinase/extracellular signal-regulated kinase pathways via PGE2 receptor (EP) 2 and EP4 expressed on the NK cell surface. In addition, PGE2 inhibited the functional maturation of NK cells and reduced their cytotoxicity against target cells. These results indicate that PGE2 promotes thyroid cancer progression by inhibiting NK cell maturation and cytotoxicity. Thus, therapeutic strategies that target PGE2 in thyroid cancer could potentiate the immune response and improve patient prognosis.

ObjectivesThe purpose of this study was to develop clinical decision support systems (CDSS) that are integrated with hospital information systems for the differential diagnosis of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF).MethodsThe integrated CDSS were validated and evaluated by physicians. Knowledge modeling for diagnosing IPF was performed by knowledge working groups, composed of radiologists and respiratory specialists. In order to develop the model for CDSS diagnosis, the clinical cases were collected from 290 cases from Seoul National University Hospital and Sevrance Hospital of Yonsei University. For the evaluation of integrated CDSS, interviews were conducted with respiratory specialists and radiologist 2 weeks after applying CDSSs in clinical settings. The CDSS was integrated with the computer vision system (CVS) and diffuse parenchymal lung diseases (DPLD), CDSS developed in our previous project.ResultsEighteen cases diagnosed as IPF were applied to the collection of diagnostic knowledge and the refined knowledge, the former diagnosed 1 case (6%) and the latter diagnosed 14 cases (78%). Therefore, the refined knowledge performed better than collected knowledge. The validation results of integrated CDSSs showed that 81 cases (74.3%) were diagnosed correctly.ConclusionsThere were 109 cases of IPF diagnosed and initiated on treatment. The significance of this study is in developing integrated CDSS with PACS by acquiring and redefining the knowledge needed for IPF diagnosis. In addition, it is significant for the integration of CDSS to verification and clinical evaluation.

Understanding mechanisms underlying smoking-related factors should be prioritized in establishing smoking prevention and cessation policy. The aim of this study was to identify factors significantly associated with smoking initiation and/or smoking cessation as well as the most important determinants of successful smoking cessation in a developed non-Western setting. Based on multiple logistic regression models, the odds ratios (ORs) for smoking initiation and cessation were estimated among males (N = 24,490) who had participated in the Health Examinees (HEXA) study. The Cox proportional hazards regression model was used to assess the association between selected predictors of smoking cessation and the likelihood of reaching this goal. Finally, Kaplan-Meier curves were constructed to illustrate the distribution of time from age at smoking initiation to age at smoking cessation. We found that the ORs for successfully quitting smoking increased with age, married status, educational achievement, having a non-manual job, drinking cessation and disease morbidity. Those exposed to secondhand smoking showed less likelihood of quitting smoking. This study developed a Smartphone Addiction Proneness Scale (SAPS) based on the existing internet and cellular phone addiction scales. For the development of this scale, 29 items (1.5 times the final number of items) were initially selected as preliminary items, based on the previous studies on internet/phone addiction as well as the clinical experience of involved experts. The preliminary scale was administered to a nationally representative sample of 795 students in elementary, middle, and high schools across South Korea. Then, final 15 items were selected according to the reliability test results. The final scale consisted of four subdomains: (1) disturbance of adaptive functions, (2) virtual life orientation, (3) withdrawal, and (4) tolerance. The final scale indicated a high reliability with Cronbach's α of .880. Support for the scale's criterion validity has been demonstrated by its relationship to the internet addiction scale, KS-II (r = .49). For the analysis of construct validity, we tested the Structural Equation Model. The results showed the four-factor structure to be valid (NFI = .943, TLI = .902, CFI = .902, RMSEA = .034). Smartphone addiction is gaining a greater spotlight as possibly a new form of addiction along with internet addiction. The SAPS appears to be a reliable and valid diagnostic scale for screening adolescents who may be at risk of smartphone addiction. Further implications and limitations are discussed.
