Alveolar bone destruction in periodontitis causes subsequent pathological conditions, such as tooth mobility and loss; thus, the treatment to prevent and overcome this condition is indispensable. The naturally occurring medicinal plant Hibiscus sabdariffa (roselle) contains anti-bacterial and anti- inflammatory compounds; it is expected to be effective in inhibiting bone damage in periodontitis caused by excessive osteoclast activity. This study investigates the inhibitory effect that roselle extract has on bone destruction in periodontitis and in calvaria bone damage. Alveolar and calvaria bone damage was induced either via ligature wire or lipopolysaccharide (LPS) injection in mice (Mus musculus). Roselle extracts in concentrations of 5% and 10% were applied before and after bone destruction. Then, the extent of the bone damage was measured using microCT and histological analysis. Roselle extract 10% attenuated alveolar bone destruction in the periodontitis and calvaria bone destruction models. The provision of 10% roselle extract before inducing alveolar bone damage also showed inhibitory activity. Roselle extract 10% effectively diminished alveolar bone destruction. Its inhibitory mechanism may be accomplished through its anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial activity. Tongue ulcer is a common condition, which persists for days or weeks and causes pain and discomfort. Experimental animal models are crucial in investigating the efficacy and safety of novel drugs and therapeutic approaches for the treatment of tongue ulcer. In this report, we provide thorough information on the procedures and the ulcer pathology progress by clinical and histological observation on each main ulcer stages, to establish an experimental model of thermally induced-traumatic ulcer in tongue mucosa for utilization in future alternative therapy studies. The procedure was performed on Mus Musculus, and the mice were divided into the control and thermal groups. An 80℃-ball pointed instrument used for ulcer induction was placed on the lateral left mucosa of the tongue for 5s. The day when the ulcer formed and healed was observed. Clinical assessment was conducted by observing the ulcer diameter, redness, swollen membrane, and weight of mice. Histological examination was performed by observing for epithelial disintegration, vasodilatation of blood vessels, and infiltration of inflammatory cells on days 1, 8, and 9 after thermal application. Ulcer was observed on day 0 right after the induction, and it reached its peak on days 1-3. The average physiologic healing time was on days 8 and 9. The mice with ulcer in the lateral tongue experienced weight loss but recovered after the ulcer diminished. Ulcer treated with triamcinolone acetonide 0.1% diminished 2-3 days earlier than the ulcer that was not treated. Our thermal model of tongue ulcer in mice provides a simple and standardized method that establishes a uniform tongue ulcer model in mice. The potential of Human Platelet Lysate (hPL) as animal serum replacement in various cell type has been reported. In HUVECs culture system, exogenous growth factors are routinely added to the media. It is currently unknown whether the presence of hPL in the medium could eliminate the need for exogenous growth factors in HUVECs culture system. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of hPL in HUVECs culture without additional EGF and bFGF, two commonly uses growth factors in HUVECs culture medium. HUVECs proliferation and protein profile was tested with MTT assay and SDS PAGE, respectively. The expression of CD34, CD106 proteins were analyzed by FACS. HUVECs cell proliferation was significantly decreased in the 2% hPL group without additional EGF and bFGF (p<0.05). However, no significant difference was found in the control group with 5% hPL without additional EGF and bFGF. Protein profile, the expression of CD34 and CD106 were comparable in all group tested. In the absence of routinely used growth factors in the HUVECs media, hPL could still support the growth of HUVECs. In addition to hPL role as serum replacement in the cell culture system, hPL can be used as an alternate of exogenous growth factors in HUVECs culture. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the field of forensic dentistry, methods for personal identification through tooth measurement have been developed. This study aimed at proposing a new method for personal identification using digital periapical radiograph. Seven measurements were performed in 206 digital periapical radiographs (103 patients with age more than 14 years old have double radiographs in the same region of interest) from seven reference distanceswhich were appointed before the measurement in permanent mandibular second premolar and first molar. The measurement process was done in two ways, digital radiography software andmanual measurement. The reliability of seven reference points was assessed with intra-observer and inter-observer values (TEM < 1 mm). The accuracy of tooth measurement method was assessed withBland- Altman test that demonstrated no statistical difference(p> 0.050) regarding paired radiograph comparison. Limits of agreement (LOA) values from Bland-Altman test showed range of difference (mm) from paired radiograph whichwas still acceptable as same person. The method been examined further through blind test for similarview radiographs resulted 100% match between one pair radiograph with true identity came from thesame person. Objective: This study aims to evaluate the eff ect of soybean milk containing a combination of anti-Streptococcus mutans IgY and chitosan to the colonization of S. mutans in the saliva and to the IgY persistency in the saliva., Materials and Methods: Experimental malnourished Sprague-Dawley rats were fed with soybean milk that is enriched with anti-S. mutans IgY and chitosan. After 15 days of feeding, we evaluated the S. mutans in dental biofilm, in addition to the persistency level of anti-S. mutans IgY., Results: The rats that received soybean milk supplemented with anti-S. mutans IgY had the lowest number of S. mutans colonies (p < 0.05). Anti-S. mutans IgY was detected in saliva after 15 days of feeding., Conclusions: Soybean milk supplemented with anti-S. mutans IgY and chitosan could signifi cantly reduce S. mutans biofilm, and the supplemented anti-S. mutans IgY persisted in these rats' saliva following the feeding period.
