Previously, we found increased rates of ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) associated with increased ultrafine particle (UFP;100 nm) concentrations in the previous few hours in Rochester, New York. Relative rates were higher after air quality policies and a recession reduced pollutant concentrations (2014-2016 versus 2005-2013), suggesting PM composition had changed and the same PM mass concentration had become more toxic. Tier 3 light duty vehicles, which should produce less primary organic aerosols and oxidizable gaseous compounds, likely making PM less toxic, were introduced in 2017. Thus, we hypothesized we would observe a lower relative STEMI rate in 2017-2019 than 2014-2016.Using STEMI events treated at the University of Rochester Medical Center (2014-2019), UFP and other pollutants measured in Rochester, a case-crossover design, and conditional logistic regression models, we estimated the rate of STEMI associated with increased UFP and other pollutants in the previous hours and days in the 2014-2016 and 2017-2019 periods.An increased rate of STEMI was associated with each 3111 particles/cmGreater rates of STEMI were associated with short term increases in concentrations of UFP and other motor vehicle related pollutants before Tier 3 introduction (2014-2016), but not afterwards (2017-2019). This change may be due to changes in PM composition after Tier 3 introduction, as well as to increased exposure misclassification and greater underestimation of effects from 2017 to 2019.

While carboxylic acids are important components in both particle and gas phases in the atmosphere, their sources and partitioning are not fully understood. In this study, we present real-time measurements of both particle- and gas-phase concentrations for five of the most common and abundant low-molecular-weight carboxylic acids (LMWCA) in a rural region in the southeastern U.S. in Fall 2016. Through comparison with secondary organic aerosol (SOA) tracers, we find that isoprene was the most important local precursor for all five LMWCA but via different pathways. We propose that monocarboxylic acids (formic and acetic acids) were mainly formed through gas-phase photochemical reactions, while dicarboxylic acids (oxalic, malonic, and succinic acids) were predominantly from aqueous processing. Unexpectedly high concentrations of particle-phase formic and acetic acids (in the form of formate and acetate, respectively) were observed and likely the components of long-range transport organic aerosol (OA), decoupled from their gas-phase counterparts. In addition, an extraordinarily strong correlation (R2 = 0.90) was observed between a particulate LMWCA and aged SOA, which we tentatively attribute to boundary layer dynamics.

Organic aerosol (OA), a large fraction of fine particles, has a large impact on climate radiative forcing and human health, and the impact depends strongly on size distributions. Here we conducted size-resolved OA measurements using a high-resolution aerosol mass spectrometer at urban and rural sites in the North China Plain (NCP) in summer and winter. Our results showed substantially different size distributions of OA with the diameters peaking at ∼550 nm in summer, and 420 nm and 350 nm at urban and rural sites, respectively, during wintertime. Positive matrix factorization (PMF) of size-resolved high-resolution mass spectra of OA resolved various OA factors at urban and rural sites. In particular, we found that the mass spectra of the same type of secondary OA (SOA) from bulk PMF analysis can be largely different across different sizes. Biomass burning OA (BBOA) and fossil-fuel-related OA (FFOA) showed broad size distributions peaking at 350 nm in winter at the rural site, where primary OA (POA = BBOA + FFOA) dominated OA across different sizes. Comparatively, secondary OA (SOA) in the NCP peaked at ∼400–500 nm during wintertime, and ∼500–650 nm in summer. SOA played an enhanced role during more severely polluted days with peak diameters shifting to larger sizes, while the changes in POA size distributions were small. The size-resolved oxygen-to-carbon (O/C) ratios were also determined and linked with the hygroscopicity parameter of OA (κOA). The results showed that κOA increased substantially with particle size, with higher values in summer in Beijing (0.28 ± 0.021) than those during wintertime (0.17 ± 0.019 and 0.12 ± 0.018). The size-resolved κOA would benefit a better prediction of cloud condensation nuclei than bulk κOA in future studies.

In the past several decades, a variety of efforts have been made in the United States to improve air quality, and ambient particulate matter (PM) concentrations have been used as a metric to evaluate the efficacy of environmental policies. However, ambient PM concentrations result from a combination of source emission rates and meteorological conditions, which also change over time. Dispersion normalization was recently developed to reduce the influence of atmospheric dispersion and proved an effective approach that enhanced diel/seasonal patterns and thus provides improved source apportionment results for speciated PM mass and particle number concentration (PNC) measurements. In this work, dispersion normalization was incorporated in long-term trend analysis of 11-500 nm PNCs derived from particle number size distributions (PNSDs) measured in Rochester, NY from 2005 to 2019. Before dispersion normalization, a consistent reduction was observed across the measured size range during 2005-2012, while after 2012, the decreasing trends slowed down for accumulation mode PNCs (100-500 nm) and reversed for ultrafine particles (UFPs, 11-100 nm). Through dispersion normalization, we showed that these changes were driven by both emission rates and dispersion. Thus, it is important for future studies to assess the effects of the changing meteorological conditions when evaluating policy effectiveness on controlling PM concentrations. Before and after dispersion normalization, an evident increase in nucleation mode particles was observed during 2015-2019. This increase was possibly enabled by a cleaner atmosphere and will pose new challenges for future source apportionment and accountability studies.

Hydroxymethanesulfonate (HMS), a key marker species of aqueous-phase processing, plays a significant role in sulfur budget in atmosphere. Here we have a comprehensive characterization of HMS at urban and rural sites in North China Plain (NCP) by using the real-time measurements from a high-resolution aerosol mass spectrometer (AMS) and a single-particle AMS together with offline filter analysis. Organosulfur compounds are important components of secondary organic aerosols (SOA). While the Aerodyne high-resolution time-of-flight aerosol mass spectrometer (AMS) has been extensively used in aerosol studies, the response of the AMS to organosulfur compounds is not well-understood. Here, we investigated the fragmentation patterns of organosulfurs and inorganic sulfates in the AMS, developed a method to deconvolve total sulfate into components of inorganic and organic origins, and applied this method in both laboratory and field measurements. Apportionment results from laboratory isoprene photooxidation experiment showed that with inorganic sulfate seed, sulfate functionality of organic origins can contribute ∼7% of SOA mass at peak growth. Results from measurements in the Southeastern U.S. showed that 4% of measured sulfate is from organosulfur compounds. Methanesulfonic acid was estimated for measurements in the coastal and remote marine boundary layer. We explored the application of this method to unit mass-resolution data, where it performed less well due to interferences. Our apportionment results demonstrate that organosulfur compounds could be a non-negligible source of sulfate fragments in AMS laboratory and field data sets. A reevaluation of previous AMS measurements over the full range of atmospheric conditions using this method could provide a global estimate/constraint on the contribution of organosulfur compounds.

The Filter Inlet for Gases and AEROsols coupled with a chemical ionization mass spectrometer (FIGAERO-CIMS) measures particle-phase organics via temperature-programmed thermal desorption, though the extent to which different compounds undergo thermal decomposition is not well characterized. We study the effect of functional groups on the degree and pathways (decarboxylation and dehydration) of thermal decomposition in FIGAERO-CIMS using atmospherically relevant alcohols, monoacids, diacids, polyacids, and multifunctional acids. Based on their carbon oxidation state, compounds are categorized as less-oxidized oxygenated organic aerosol (LO-OOA), oxygenated organic aerosol (OOA), or more-oxidized OOA (MO-OOA), and exhibit little, minor, and considerable thermal decomposition, respectively. The result shows that thermal decomposition leads to negative biases in the measured elemental ratios (O:C and H:C) of compounds categorized as OOA and MO-OOA, except for the H:C ratio of those categorized as MO-OOA. We develop screening criteria for considerable thermal decomposition using double bond equivalent (DBE), maximum desorption temperature (Tmax), and the number of oxygen (nO) (DBE ≥ 2, Tmax ≥ 72 °C, and nO > 4). Additionally, we find that β-keto-carboxylic acids and carboxyl-containing aromatic compounds are the only compounds that favor decarboxylation. Lastly, we investigate the effect of the instrument’s temperature ramping rate (40, 13.3, and 3.3 °C min−1) on the thermal decomposition using citric acid. We recommend using 13.3 and 40 °C min−1 ramping rates but do not recommend using 3.3 °C min−1 which acts distinctively from 13.3 and 40 °C min−1 with the most parental compound decomposition. The formation and evolution of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) was investigated at Yorkville, GA, in late summer (mid-August ~ mid-October, 2016). Organic aerosol (OA) composition was measured using two on-line mass spectrometry instruments, the high-resolution time-of-flight aerosol mass spectrometer (AMS) and the Filter Inlet for Gases and AEROsols coupled to a high-resolution time-of-flight iodide-adduct chemical ionization mass spectrometer (FIGAERO-CIMS). Through analysis of speciated organics data from FIGAERO-CIMS and factorization analysis of data obtained from both instruments, we observed notable SOA formation from isoprene and monoterpenes during both day and night. Specifically, in addition to isoprene epoxydiols (IEPOX) uptake, we identified isoprene SOA formation via hydroxyl hydroperoxide oxidation (ISOPOOH oxidation via non-IEPOX pathways) and isoprene organic nitrate formation via photooxidation in the presence of NOx and nitrate radical oxidation. Monoterpenes were found to be the most important SOA precursors at night. We observed significant contributions from highly-oxidized acid-like compounds to the aged OA factor from FIGAERO-CIMS. Taken together, our results showed that FIGAERO-CIMS measurements are highly complementary to the extensively used AMS factorization analysis, and together they provide more comprehensive insights into OA sources and composition.

The molecular-level composition and structure of organic aerosol (OA) affect its chemical/physical properties, transformations, and impacts. Here, we use the molecular-level chemical composition of functionalized OA from three diverse field sites to evaluate the effect of molecular-level compositional variability on OA phase state and thermodynamic mixing favorability. For these ambient sites, modeled aerosol phase state ranges from liquid to semisolid. The observed variability in OA composition has some effect on resulting phase state, but other factors like the presence of inorganic ions, aerosol liquid water, and internal versus external mixing with water are determining factors in whether these particles exist as liquids, semisolids, or solids. Organic molecular composition plays a more important role in determining phase state for phase-separated (verus well-mixed) systems. Similarly, despite the observed OA compositional differences, the thermodynamic mixing favorability for OA samples with aerosol liquid water, isoprene oxidation products, or monoterpene oxidation products remains fairly consistent within each campaign. Mixing of filter-sampled OA and isoprene or monoterpene oxidation products is often favorable in both seasons, while mixing with water is generally unfavorable.

Particulate matter (PM), of which a significant fraction is comprised of secondary organic aerosols (SOA), has received considerable attention due to its health implications. In this study, the water-soluble oxidative potential (OPWS) of SOA generated from the photooxidation of biogenic and anthropogenic hydrocarbon precursors (isoprene, α-pinene, β-caryophyllene, pentadecane, m-xylene, and naphthalene) under different reaction conditions (RO2+ HO2 vs. RO2+ NO dominant, dry vs. humid) was characterized using dithiothreitol (DTT) consumption. The measured intrinsic OPWS-DTT values ranged from 9 to 205 pmol min−1 µg−1 and were highly dependent on the specific hydrocarbon precursor, with naphthalene and isoprene SOA generating the highest and lowest OPWS-DTT values, respectively. Humidity and RO2 fate affected OPWS-DTT in a hydrocarbon-specific manner, with naphthalene SOA exhibiting the most pronounced effects, likely due to the formation of nitroaromatics. Together, these results suggest that precursor identity may be more influential than reaction condition in determining SOA oxidative potential, demonstrating the importance of sources, such as incomplete combustion, to aerosol toxicity. In the context of other PM sources, all SOA systems, with the exception of naphthalene SOA, were less DTT active than ambient sources related to incomplete combustion, including diesel and gasoline combustion as well as biomass burning. Finally, naphthalene SOA was as DTT active as biomass burning aerosol, which was found to be the most DTT-active OA source in a previous ambient study. These results highlight a need to consider SOA contributions (particularly from anthropogenic hydrocarbons) to health effects in the context of hydrocarbon emissions, SOA yields, and other PM sources.

The atmospheric evolution of organic compounds encompasses many thousands of compounds with varying volatility, polarity, and water solubility. The molecular-level chemical composition of this mixture plays a major, yet uncertain, role in its transformations and impacts. Here we perform a non-targeted molecular-level intercomparison of functionalized organic aerosol from three diverse field sites and a chamber. Despite similar bulk composition, we report large molecular-level variability between multi-hour organic aerosol samples at each site, with 66 ± 13% of functionalized compounds differing between consecutive samples. Single precursor environmental laboratory chamber experiments and fully chemically-explicit modeling confirm this variability is due to changes in emitted precursors, chemical age, and/or oxidation conditions. These molecular-level results demonstrate greater compositional variability than is typically observed in less-speciated measurements, such as bulk elemental composition, which tend to show less daily variability. These observations should inform future field and laboratory studies, including assessments of the effects of variability on aerosol properties and ultimately the development of strategic organic aerosol parameterizations for air quality and climate models. The detailed molecular-level speciation of organic aerosol is a highly challenging task. Here, the authors show an extensive molecular-level intercomparison of functionalized organic aerosol from three diverse field sites revealing large compositional variability between samples at each field site.

The implementation of stringent emission regulations has resulted in the decline of anthropogenic pollutants including sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx) and carbon monoxide (CO). In contrast, ammonia (NH3) emissions are largely unregulated, with emissions projected to increase in the future. We present real-time aerosol and gas measurements from a field study conducted in an agricultural-intensive region in the southeastern U.S. during the fall of 2016 to investigate how NH3 affects particle acidity and SOA formation via the gas-particle partitioning of semi-volatile organic acids. Particle water and pH were determined using the ISORROPIA-II thermodynamic model and validated by comparing predicted inorganic HNO3-NO3− and NH3-NH4+ gas-particle partitioning ratios with measured values. Our results showed that despite the high NH3 concentrations (study average 8.1 ± 5.2 ppb), PM1 were highly acidic with pH values ranging from 0.9 to 3.8, and a study-averaged pH of 2.2 ± 0.6. PM1 pH varied by approximately 1.4 units diurnally. Formic and acetic acids were the most abundant gas-phase organic acids, and oxalate was the most abundant particle-phase water-soluble organic acid anion. Measured particle-phase water-soluble organic acids were on average 6 % of the total non-refractory PM1 organic aerosol mass. The measured molar fraction of oxalic acid in the particle phase (i.e., particle-phase oxalic acid molar concentration divided by the total oxalic acid molar concentration) ranged between 47 and 90 % for PM1 pH 1.2 to 3.4. The measured oxalic acid gas-particle partitioning ratios were in good agreement with their corresponding thermodynamic predictions, calculated based on oxalic acid’s physicochemical properties, ambient temperature, particle water and pH. In contrast, gas-particle partitioning of formic and acetic acids were not well predicted for reasons currently unknown. For this study, higher NH3 concentrations relative to what has been measured in the region in previous studies had minor effects on PM1 organic acids and their influence on the overall organic aerosol and PM1 mass concentrations.

Atmospheric organic aerosol (OA) has important impacts on climate and human health but its sources remain poorly understood. Biogenic monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes are critical precursors of OA. The OA generation from these precursors predicted by models has considerable uncertainty owing to a lack of appropriate observations as constraints. Here, we perform novel lab-in-the-field experiments, which allow us to study OA formation under realistic atmospheric conditions and offer a connection between laboratory and field studies. Based on the lab-in-the-field experimental approach and positive matrix factorization analysis on aerosol mass spectrometry data, we provide a measure of OA from monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes in the southeastern U.S. Further, we use an upgraded atmospheric model and reproduce the measured OA concentration from monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes at multiple sites in the southeastern U.S., building confidence in the observed attribution of monoterpene SOA. We show that the annual average concentration of OA from monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes in the southeastern U.S. is ~ 2.1 µg m−3. This amount is substantially higher than represented in current regional models and accounts for 21 % of World Health Organization PM2.5 standard, indicating a significant contributor of environmental risk to the 77 million habitants in the southeastern U.S.

Exposure to air pollution is a leading global health risk. Secondary organic aerosol (SOA) constitute a large portion of ambient particulate matter (PM). In this study, the water-soluble oxidative potential (OP) determined by dithiothreitol (DTT) consumption and intracellular reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (ROS/RNS) production was measured for SOA generated from the photooxidation of naphthalene in the presence of iron sulfate and ammonium sulfate seed particles. The measured intrinsic OP varied for aerosol formed using different initial naphthalene concentrations, however, no trends were observed between OP and bulk aerosol composition or seed type. For all experiments, aerosol generated in the presence of iron-containing seed induced higher ROS/RNS production compared to that formed in the presence of inorganic seed. This effect was primarily attributed to differences in aerosol carbon oxidation state $${\boldsymbol{(}}{\bar{{\bf{O}}{\bf{S}}}}_{{\bf{c}}}{\boldsymbol{)}}$$ ( O S ¯ c ) . In the presence of iron, radical concentrations are elevated via iron redox cycling, resulting in more oxidized species. An exponential trend was also observed between ROS/RNS and $${\boldsymbol{(}}{\bar{{\bf{O}}{\bf{S}}}}_{{\bf{c}}}{\boldsymbol{)}}$$ ( O S ¯ c ) for all naphthalene SOA, regardless of seed type or aerosol formation condition. This may have important implications as aerosol have an atmospheric lifetime of a week, over which $${\boldsymbol{(}}{\bar{{\bf{O}}{\bf{S}}}}_{{\bf{c}}}{\boldsymbol{)}}$$ ( O S ¯ c ) increases due to continued photochemical aging, potentially resulting in more toxic aerosol.
