A new species of the alpheid shrimp genus Salmoneus Holthuis, 1955, S. antricola n. sp., is described and illustrated on the basis of a single ovigerous specimen from an aphotic marine cave at a depth of 12 m, off Ie Island, Okinawa Islands, the Ryukyu Archipelago. It is morphologically similar to five species presently referred to the S. jarli (Holthuis, 1951) species group: S. erasimorum Dworschak, Anker & Abed-Navandi, 2000, S. komaii Anker, 2011, S. paulayi Anker, 2011, S. poupini Anker, 2011, and S. sketi Fransen, 1991. However, the minor cheliped with an elongate carpus being subequal to the chela, the lack of teeth on the cutting edges of the minor cheliped fingers, and the very slender third to fifth pereopods are obvious characters that distinguish S. antricola n. sp. from all of its presumed close relatives. Among the 50 species of Salmoneus, only S. sketi and the present new species are known from marine caves.

The authors present a case of concurrent hypertrophic spinal pachymeningitis (HSP) and heavy-chain disease (HCD). The patient was a 71-year-old woman presenting with leg paralysis and fever. Laminectomy was performed for thoracic HSP, and chemotherapy was administered for HCD. Because the dura mater was not surgically opened, marked hypertrophy remained postoperatively. Once the HCD was controlled by chemotherapy, the fever subsided and the hypertrophy was resolved. No previous reports have supported a link between the two diseases. Idiopathic HSP may be secondary to rare conditions such as HCD, and systemic examinations should be performed to the fullest extent possible to investigate the possibility of some underlying disease.

Local chemotherapy by intra-arterial administration of ACNU was performed in 2 cases with CNS leukemia, which responded well to this therapy. The first patient was a 42-year-old male who was diagnosed as having chronic myelogenous leukemia with local infiltration of leukemic cells to the optic nerves. By intra-arterial infusion of ACNU (60mg), symptoms and results of ophthalomological examinations were improved remarkably. The second case was a 16-year-old male diagnosed as having acute lymphoblastic leukemia, and complicating with meningeal involvement during the course of chemotherapy. Complete remission was achieved by intra-thecal administration ACNU. Intra-arterial infusion of ACNU would be an effective local chemotherapy of CNS leukemia and its effectiveness could be achieved by less dose of ACNU compared to that of intravenous infusion. Therefore, side effects, e.g., delayed myelosuppression caused by ACNU could be decreased by this method.
