Abstract Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Fatty Liver Disease (MAFLD) has become the leading cause of chronic liver disease. Liver biopsy, as the diagnostic gold standard, is invasive and has sampling bias, making it particularly important to search for sensitive and specific biomarkers for diagnosis. Cytokeratin 18 (CK18) M30 and M65 are products of liver cell apoptosis and necrosis, respectively, and liver-expressed antimicrobial peptide 2 (LEAP-2) is a related indicator of glucose and lipid metabolism. Correlation studies have found that all three indicators positively correlate with the liver enzymes alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST). Through comparison of diagnostic values, it was found that CK18 M65 can better distinguish between healthy individuals and MAFLD; LEAP-2 can effectively distinguish MAFLD from other liver diseases, especially ALD.

Background: Observational studies have highlighted the pivotal role of inflammatory cytokines in cirrhosis progression. However, the existence of a causal link between inflammatory cytokines and cirrhosis remains uncertain. In this study, we conducted a bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis at a summarized level to illuminate the potential causal relationship between the two variables. Methods: This study utilized genetic variance in cirrhosis and inflammatory cytokines from a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of European descent. The MR-PRESSO outlier test, Cochran’s Q test, and MR-Egger regression were applied to assess outliers, heterogeneity, and pleiotropy. The inverse variance weighted method and multiple sensitivity analyses were used to evaluate causalities. Furthermore, the validation set was used for simultaneous data validation. Results: The inflammatory cytokine monocyte chemoattractant protein 3 (MCP-3) was supposedly associated with a greater risk of cirrhosis. And cirrhosis was significantly correlated with increased levels of hepatocyte growth factor (HGF). Conclusions: This study suggests that MCP-3 might be associated with the etiology of cirrhosis, while several inflammatory cytokines could potentially play a role in its downstream development. Additionally, the progression of cirrhosis was associated with elevated levels of HGF, suggesting a possible role for liver repair functions.

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) with advantages including abundance in earth, non-toxicity, high chemical stability, surface hydrophobicity in dark, and extremely high permittivity could be highly promising for advanced electronics. However, the thermal stability and low bandgap (Eg) of TiO2 pose a big challenge for TiO2 to be used as dielectric, which could be resolved by doping with other metal cations. In this work, we studied the impact of gallium incorporation on electrical and material characteristics of TiO2 thin films. These TiO2 and TiXGaO films with thickness of 15 nm were derived by atomic layer deposition (ALD) and then annealed in O2 ambient at 500°C, where the levels of Ga incorporation were tuned by the cycle ratio (X) of TiO2 to that of Ga2O3 during ALD growth. Both thin film transistors (TFTs) using TiXGaO (TiO2) thin films as the channel and metal-oxide semiconductor capacitors (MOSCAPs) using TiXGaO (TiO2) thin films as the dielectric were fabricated to unravel the impact of Ga incorporation on electrical properties of TiO2 thin films. It is found that the Ga incorporation reduces the conductivity of TiO2 thin films significantly. Pure TiO2 thin films could be the ideal channel material for TFTs with excellent switching behaviors whereas Ga-incorporated TiO2 thin films could be the dielectric material for MOSCAPs with good insulating properties. The leakage current and dielectric constant (k) value are also found to be decreased with the increased Ga content in TiXGaO/Si MOSCAPs. Additionally, the density of interface trap (Dit) between TiXGaO and Si were extracted by multi-frequency conductance method, where a “U-shape” trap profile with similar level of Dit values can be observed for TiXGaO MOSCAPs with varying Ga contents. Material characterizations show that the Ga incorporation destabilizes the crystallization and enlarges the bandgap (Eg) of TiO2 while maintaining a smooth surface. Interestingly, Ga incorporation is found to decrease the overall oxygen content and introduce more oxygen-related defects in the film. As a result, the reduction of leakage current upon Ga incorporation in MOSCAPs could be explained by amorphization of the film and enlarged band offset to Si rather than oxygen defect passivation. These Ga-incorporated TiO2 films may found promising usage in future electronic device applications such as trench capacitors in dynamic random-access memory, where the emerging high-k dielectrics with low leakage currents and high thermal stability are demanded.

BackgroundIncreased maternal cortisol secretion has been observed during pregnancy and labor. However, due to the limitations in diagnostic methods, the dynamic change of cortisol during the short period between threatened labor and labor is unknown. In this study, we aim to evaluate the changes in serum cortisol during late pregnancy and full-term labor initiation, verifying if cortisol could serve as a biomarker for the diagnosis of labor initiation from threatened labor.MethodsThis cross-sectional onsite study involved 564 participants of 6 different gestational stages (C: Control; T1: Trimester 1; T3: Trimester 3; E: expectant; TL: threatened labor; L: labor), all patients in the E, TL, and L groups were at full term. The serum cortisol concentration was quantified with a point-of-care test (POCT), and the gestation, age, parity, and BMI of participants were documented. Morning serum cortisol was collected between 8:00 and 10:00 a.m., except for the TL and L group women who were tested upon arrival or during latent labor. With cortisol levels or all five variables, L was distinguished from TL using machine learning algorithms.ResultsSignificant elevation of cortisol concentration was observed between T1 and T3, or TL and L group (P< 0.001). Women belonging to the E and TL group showed similar gestation week and cortisol levels. Diagnosis of labor initiation using cortisol levels (cutoff = 21.46 μg/dL) yielded sensitivity, specificity, and AUC of 86.50%, 88.60%, and 0.934. With additional variables, a higher specificity (89.29%) was achieved. The diagnostic accuracy of all methods ranged from 85.93% to 87.90%.ConclusionSerum cortisol could serve as a potential biomarker for diagnosis of L form TL. The rapid onsite detection of serum cortisol with POCT could facilitate medical decision-making for admission and special treatments, either as an additional parameter or when other technical platforms are not available.

Highlights (a) Why did we undertake this study? Stress hyperglycemia is classic but a long-overlooked pathophysiological process and a recently validated parameter, stress hyperglycemia ratio (SHR), facilitates its estimation. (b) What is the specific question(s) we wanted to answer? Is SHR associated with the in-hospital prognosis in non-surgical patients with type 2 diabetes and heart failure? (iii) What did we find? Compared to the nadir range of SHR at 0.79 to 1.08, both high and low SHR at admission elicit elevated risks of cardiac, kidney, and infectious adverse events during hospitalization in non-surgical patients with type 2 diabetes and heart failure. (iv) What are the implications of our findings? Clinicians should understand the inconsistency between the blood glucose at admission and HbA1c indicates poor prognosis during hospitalization and warrants additional monitoring.

Abstract Due to the low cost and the scaling capability of Si substrate, InAlN/GaN high-electron-mobility transistors (HEMTs) on silicon substrate have attracted more and more attentions. In this paper, a high-performance 50-nm-gate-length InAlN/GaN HEMT on Si with a high on/off current (I on/I off) ratio of 7.28 × 106, an average subthreshold swing (SS) of 72 mV/dec, a low drain-induced barrier lowing (DIBL) of 88 mV, an off-state three-terminal breakdown voltage (BV ds) of 36 V, a current/power gain cutoff frequency (f T/f max) of 140/215 GHz, and a Johnson’s figure-of-merit (JFOM) of 5.04 THz V is simultaneously demonstrated. The device extrinsic and intrinsic parameters are extracted using equivalent circuit model, which is verified by the good agreement between simulated and measured S-parameter values. Then the scaling behavior of InAlN/GaN HEMTs on Si is predicted using the extracted extrinsic and intrinsic parameters of devices with different gate lengths (L g). It presents that a f T/f max of 230/327 GHz can be achieved when L g scales down to 20 nm with the technology developed in the study, and an improved f T/f max of 320/535 GHz can be achieved on a 20-nm-gate-length InAlN/GaN HEMT with regrown ohmic contact technology and 30% decreased parasitic capacitance. This study confirms the feasibility of further improvement of InAlN/GaN HEMTs on Si for RF applications.

Objectives: The purpose of this study is to investigate the diagnostic performance of the peritumoral brain zone (PBZ) in differentiating glioma grades. This is accomplished by comparing the relative standardized uptake values (rSUV) and relative cerebral blood flow (rCBF) obtained from hybrid 18F-fluoro-2-deoxy-d-glucose positron emission tomography/magnetic resonance imaging (18F-FDG PET/MRI) within different regions of interest, including the solid portion (SP) and the PBZ. Methods: Twenty-four patients with gliomas who underwent preoperative 18F-PET/MRI were enrolled in this study. The maximum standardized uptake values (SUVmax) and relative maximum cerebral blood flow (rCBFmax) were obtained from the FDG-PET and ASL data, respectively. The relative SUVmax (rSUVmax) was calculated by standardizing against the contralateral normal-appearing brain cortex. Data from the solid portion (SP) of tumor and the peritumoral brain zone (PBZ) at distance of 5 ​mm, 10 ​mm, 15 ​mm, and 20 ​mm from the SP margin were recorded. Logistic regression was used to generate receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curves. The areas under the ROC curves (AUCs) were calculated and compared to analyze the diagnostic utility of each parameter. Results: In comparison to low-grade glioma (LGG), high-grade glioma (HGG) exhibited significantly higher rSUVmax and rCBFmax values in both the SP and the proximal PBZ (P ​ ​0.05). When combining PBZs and SP with rSUVmax and rCBFmax, the rSUVmax and rCBFmax values of SP to PBZ 20 ​mm exhibited superior performance compared to single parameters and smaller regions of interest, with an AUC of 0.848. The sensitivity and specificity were determined as 73.8% and 83.6%, respectively. Conclusion: The combination of rSUVmax and rCBFmax in the SP and PBZ, based on hybrid PET/MRI, proves to be superior to using parameters solely in the SP when it comes to differentiating between HGG and LGG. Expanding the study appropriately and incorporating the use of multiple parameters can offer more valuable diagnostic information, which holds potential for clinical applications.

Objective: To assess the diagnostic value of fluorine 18 (18F)-labeled prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA)-1007 Positron emission tomography/Magnetic resonance imaging (PET/MRI) and compared with that of biparametric MRI (bpMRI) for the detection of prostate cancer (PCa). Materials and methods: The study enrolled 29 patients with suspected PCa preoperatively who underwent 18F-PSMA-1007 PET/MRI and subsequent targeted biopsy for suspected PCa lesions. Two readers independently assessed the images of each suspected PCa lesion and determined their overall assessment category on bpMRI and 18F-PSMA-1007 PET/MRI. By using biopsy histopathology as the reference standard, the accuracies of 18F-PSMA-1007 PET/MRI and bpMRI for the detection of PCa lesion were determined. Furthermore, the receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curves of their semi-quantitative parameters of the optimal standardized uptake value (SUVmax) and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) for detecting PCa lesions were derived, and their correlations with the International Society of Urological Pathology (ISUP) grade were reported. Results: Of the 48 suspected PCa lesions in 29 patients, 38 were pathologically diagnosed with clinically significant PCa and 10 with nonprostate cancer (non-PCa) lesions. Compared with the pathological results, 18F-PSMA-1007 PET/MRI demonstrated much greater diagnostic accuracy (area under the curve, AUC), sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value than bpMRI: 0.974 versus 0.711, 94.74% versus 92.11%, 100% versus 50%, 100% versus 87.50%, and 83.33% versus 62.50%, respectively. The semi-quantitative parameters of SUVmax demonstrated a higher AUC of 0.874 than that of ADC with 0.776 for detecting PCa. The ISUP grade was positively associated with SUVmax at spearman’s rho correlation coefficient (Rho) = 0.539, p = 0), but not associated with ADC (Rho = −0.105, p = 0.529). Conclusion: The diagnostic value of 18F-PSMA-1007 PET/MRI for the detection of PCa is better than that of bpMRI, and a high SUVmax may indicate a lesion with a high ISUP grade.

Purpose: A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to combine the data available from clinical trials and evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of tirzepatide in people with type 2 diabetes (T2D).Methods: We systematically searched the MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Library, and clinical trials registries (https://clinicaltrials.gov) up to 25 March 2022 for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that compared tirzepatide with placebo or active hypoglycemic drugs in subjects with T2D. Heterogeneity was judged by the I2 value and Cochran’s Q test. The randomized effects model was adopted to calculate risk ratios and weighted mean differences (WMDs). The primary outcome was the change from baseline in HbA1c levels. Secondary efficacy endpoints were fasting serum glucose (FSG), change of body weight, blood pressure, fasting lipid profiles, and safety indexes.Results: Six trials comprising 6,579 subjects (4,410 in the tirzepatide group and 2,054 in the control group) fulfilled the pre-specified criteria and were included in the study. Tirzepatide treatment resulted in reducing HbA1c (WMD: -1.07%; 95% confidence intervals [CIs]: −1.44, −0.56), FSG (WMD, −21.50 mg/dl; 95% CI: −34.44, −8.56), body weight (WMD: −7.99 kg; 95% CI −11.36, −4.62), and blood pressure and ameliorated fasting lipid profiles, without increasing hypoglycemia, either as monotherapy or an add-on therapy. Tirzepatide increased the risk of gastrointestinal adverse events mainly in add-on therapy but not in terms of pancreatitis or cholelithiasis. Furthermore, tirzepatide presented a dose–response effect on the reduction in HbA1c and body weight and increase in nausea and vomiting.Conclusion: In patients with type 2 diabetes, tirzepatide shows superior blood glucose control and weight loss performance, without an increased risk of hypoglycemia.Systematic Review Registration: (https://www.crd.york.ac.uk/PROSPERO), identifier (CRD42022319442).

To verify the priming effects of Maillard reaction precursors on the microbial decomposition of rice straw at different incubation temperatures, the method of indoor incubation at a constant temperature was adopted. In the process, the addition of glucose, catechol or glycine solution alone or in mixed solution was conducted at incubation temperatures of 10 °C, 15 °C and 28 °C, respectively. The C content of humic-extracted acid (CHLE), humification index (the ratio of C content of humic-like acid to fulvic-like acid, CHLA/CFLA), ∆logK value of humic-like acid (HLA), and C content of humin-like acid (CHLu) were dynamically analyzed at 0, 30, 60, and 90 d, respectively. At the same time, the differences in the atomic ratio and FTIR spectra before and after incubation were systematically analyzed. The results showed that (1) the additions of glucose alone and mixed precursors were both beneficial to increasing the CHLE content at three tested temperatures, especially at two low temperatures (10 °C and 15 °C), and glucose alone manifested the most significant improvement in CHLE. In contrast, following the addition of glycine alone, the CHLE content decreased by 2.4% at 15 °C and 4.6% at 28 °C after incubation. (2) Glucose as the sole precursor was more beneficial to improving the quality of the humic substance (HS) at 28 °C, but only enhanced the condensation degree of HLA molecules at 15 °C. Compared with the results at 15 °C and 28 °C, the HLA molecules had the lowest condensation degree at 10 °C, regardless of whether a single precursor or mixed Maillard precursors were used. (3) After incubation, the amounts of N compounds in the HLA molecules decreased to varying degrees, especially at 28 °C. The O-containing functional groups, such as carboxyl groups, from HLA molecules decreased following the addition of a single precursor, while the mixed precursors resulted in an increase in O-containing functional groups. Increasing the catechol content directly enriched the unsaturated bonds of HLA. With the decomposition of rice straw, regardless of how the precursors were added, the polysaccharide content decreased to different degrees. The decomposition of polysaccharides in HLA was more temperature-sensitive, and an increase in temperature might encourage more polysaccharide consumption. Under each temperature, the molecular structure of HLA was simplified initially and then gradually became complex. Finally, the addition of glucose alone at 15 °C was more favorable for the complexity of HLA molecules, while at 28 °C, it could only alleviate the degree of simplification of the HLA molecular structure to a certain extent. (4) At the three tested temperatures, compared with the CK control, either one precursor or a mixture of three precursors could more effectively promote the decomposition of CHLu. Under the conditions of 10 °C and 15 °C, the addition of mixed precursors was more beneficial to the decomposition of CHLu, causing the CHLu content to decrease by 37.9% and 44.7%, respectively, followed by the addition of glucose alone.

Background: We aim to investigate the guideline adherence of β-blocker (BB) initiating dose in Chinese hospitalized patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) and whether the adherence affected the in-hospital outcomes.Methods: This was a retrospective study of patients hospitalized with HFrEF who had initiated BBs during their hospitalization. We defined adherence to clinical practice guidelines as initiating BB with standard dose and non-adherence to guidelines if otherwise, and examined the association between adherence to guidelines and in-hospital BB-related adverse events. Subgroup analyses based on sex, age, coronary heart disease, and hypertension were performed.Results: Among 1,104 patients with HFrEF initiating BBs during hospitalization (median length of hospitalization, 12 days), 304 (27.5%) patients received BB with non-adherent initiating dose. This non-adherence was related to a higher risk (hazard ratio [95% confidence interval]) of BB dose reduction or withdrawal (1.78 [1.42 to 2.22], P < 0.001), but not significantly associated with risks of profound bradycardia, hypotension, cardiogenic shock requiring intravenous inotropes, and severe bronchospasm requiring intravenous steroid during hospitalization.Conclusion: This study identified that over a fourth of patients had received BBs with an initiating dose that was not adherent to guidelines in Chinese hospitalized patients with HFrEF, and this non-adherence was associated with BB dose reduction or withdrawal during hospitalization.

Insulin sensitizers targeting insulin receptors (IR) are a potential drug for the treatment of diabetes. Serpentine is an alkaloid component in the root of Catharanthus roseus (L.) G. Don. Serpentine screened by surface plasmon resonance (SPR) technology has the ability to target IR. The objective of this study was to investigate whether serpentine could modulate the role of insulin in regulating blood glucose through insulin receptors in cells and in animal models of diabetes. SPR technology was used to detect the affinity of different concentrations of serpentine with insulin receptors. The Western blotting method was used to detect the expression levels of key proteins of the insulin signaling pathway in C2C12 cells and 3T3-L1 cells as well as in muscle and subcutaneous adipose tissue of diabetic mice after serpentine and insulin treatment. Diabetic mice were divided into four groups and simultaneously injected with insulin or serpentine, and the blood glucose concentration and serum levels of insulin, glucagon, and C-peptide were measured 150 min later. mRNA levels of genes related to lipid metabolism and glucose metabolism in liver, muscle, and subcutaneous adipose tissue were detected by RT-PCR. Serpentine was able to bind to the extracellular domain of IR with an affinity of 2.883 × 10−6 M. Serpentine combined with insulin significantly enhanced the ability of insulin to activate the insulin signaling pathway and significantly enhanced the glucose uptake capacity of C2C12 cells. Serpentine enhanced the ability of low-dose insulin (1 nM) and normal-dose insulin (100 nM) to activate the insulin signaling pathway. Serpentine also independently activated AMPK phosphorylation, thus stimulating glucose uptake by C2C12 cells. In high-fat-diet/streptozotocin (HFD/STZ)-induced diabetic mice, serpentine significantly prolonged the hypoglycemic time of insulin, significantly reduced the use of exogenous insulin, and inhibited endogenous insulin secretion. In addition, serpentine alone significantly increased the expression of GSK-3β mRNA in muscle tissue, thus enhancing glucose uptake, and at the same time, serpentine significantly increased glucagon secretion and liver gluconeogenesis. Serpentine enhances the ability of insulin to regulate blood glucose through the insulin receptor, and can also regulate blood glucose alone, but it has a negative regulation mechanism and cannot produce a hypoglycemic effect. Therefore, serpentine may be useful as an insulin sensitizer to assist insulin to lower blood glucose.

An enhancement of the electrical performance of the InAlN/GaN high electron mobility transistors (HEMTs) is demonstrated by the incorporation of post bis(trifluoromethane) sulfonamide (TFSI) treatment. The surface treatment of TFSI solution results in the increase of 2DEG electron mobility from 1180 to 1500 cm2/Vs and thus a reduction of on-state resistance and an increase in transconductance. The results indicate that the positive charge of H+ will decrease the polarization charges of the InAlN barrier under the access region due to the converse piezoelectric effect, leading to the reduced polarization Coulomb field (PCF) scattering in InAlN/GaN HEMT. This offers a possible way to improve the electron mobility and device performance of InAlN/GaN HEMTs for further application.

BackgroundDiabetes is prevalent worldwide including hospitalized patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). This retrospective study investigated the association of diabetes with in-hospital adverse events in patients with HFrEF.MethodsWe analyzed data from electronic medical records of patients hospitalized with HFrEF in West China Hospital of Sichuan University from January 1, 2011, to September 30, 2018. Propensity score matching balances the baseline characteristics between patients with and without diabetes. Logistic and Poisson regressions investigated the association of diabetes with risks of intubation, cardiogenic shock, acute kidney injury (AKI), intensive care unit (ICU) admission and death during hospitalization, and length of ICU and hospital stay in the matched cases.ResultsAmong 6,022 eligible patients (including 1,998 with diabetes), 1,930 patient pairs with and without diabetes were included by propensity score matching. Abstract In this paper, the problem of oscillation for a second-order linear impulsive differential equation with damping is investigated. This equation can be more accurately used to model the states of many evolutionary processes, which are often subject to short-term perturbations and experience abrupt changes at certain moments of time. By employing a generalized Riccati transformation technique, we derive several oscillation criteria which are either new or improve several recent results in the literature. In addition, we provide an example to illustrate the effect of impulses on the oscillation of the equation.

We have experimentally investigated the impact of vertical and lateral scaling on low-field electron mobility (µ) in InAlN/GaN high-electron-mobility transistors (HEMTs). It is found that µ reduces as InAlN barrier (TB) and gate length (LG) scale down but increases with the scaled source–drain distance (LSD). Polarization Coulomb Field (PCF) scattering is believed to account for the scaling-dependent electron mobility characteristic. The polarization charge distribution is modulated with the vertical and lateral scaling, resulting in the changes in µ limited by PCF scattering. The mobility characteristic shows that PCF scattering should be considered when devices scale down, which is significant for the device design and performance improvement for RF applications.

This paper presents a high order time discretization method by combining the time splitting method with semi-implicit spectral deferred correction method to simulate the molecular beam epitaxial growth models with and without slope selection. The original problem is split into linear and nonlinear subproblems. The Fourier spectral method is adopted for the linear part, and a second-order SSP-RK method together with the Fourier spectral method is used for the nonlinear part. The scheme takes advantage of avoiding nonlinear iteration. However, the temporal error is dominated by the operator splitting error, which is second order for Strang splitting. In order to achieve higher order numerical algorithm in time, we consider a semi-implicit spectral deferred correction (SDC) method to reduce the splitting error. Specifically, the temporal order is increased by one with each correction loop in the SDC framework. Numerical results are given to illustrate that the high order temporal algorithm is a practical, accurate and efficient simulation tool for molecular beam epitaxial growth models.

In this paper, we introduce and analyze H(div)-conforming finite element methods for a nonlinear model in poroelasticity. More precisely, the flow variables are discretized by H(div)-conforming mixed finite elements, while the elastic displacement is approximated by the H(div)-conforming finite element with the interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin formulation. Optimal a priori error estimates are derived for both semidiscrete and fully discrete schemes.

Low-power, nonvolatile transistors are demanded in the digital electronics development. In our work, molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) acts as the channel material integrated with TiN, which is used as a floating gate to build a floating gate transistor. Our transistor exhibits a large hysteresis of 4 V (Vd = 0.1 V), high on/off ratio of 105, and symmetry writing and erase voltage. The excellent device characteristics such as nondestructive data readout, low operation voltage, and wide memory window inherent in single-layer MoS2 show their great potential to be applied in nonvolatile memory cells.

A novel and simple gel system of isobutylene and maleic anhydride (PIBM) was used to prepare SiC ceramics. The rheological behaviour of the SiC slurries was investigated as function of organic additives. The SiC slurries with 0.2 wt.% PIBM and 0.2 wt.% tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH) showed low viscosity, which was favourable for casting SiC green bodies. In order to obtain homogeneous green bodies, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was used to assist the dispersion of carbon black in the slurries, and polyethylene glycol (PEG) was added to inhibit the surface exfoliation of green bodies. The content of PVA was controlled carefully to avoid the warpage of green bodies during the drying process. Finally, homogeneous defect-free SiC green bodies were successfully fabricated via aqueous gelcasting. The SiC ceramics sintered at 2100 °C (prepared from slurries with solid content of 60 wt.%) showed an average flexural strength of 305.7 MPa with porosity of 19.92%.

Growth of high-quality III–V semiconductors for electronics and optoelectronics usually requires an atomic-lattice matched substrate. Here, the authors use templated liquid-phase crystal growth to create single-crystalline III–V material up to ten micrometres across on an amorphous substrate.

A method to engineer the peak-to-valley ratio (PVR) by design of the epitaxial layers is presented. The impact of Al content on PVR of InAs/AlSb/Al(x)Ga(1−x)Sb tunnelling diode is studied. A simplified analytical model is used to explain the PVRs dependence on Al content. It was found that PVR reaches its maximum when Al content x is zero with a quantised InAs layer. The peak positions appeared in the negative differential region are effectively controlled by the applied gate bias. A PVR ratio as high as 7.1 was achieved, which is beneficial for a wide range of circuit applications. Adjusting Al content provides a new way to engineer the PVR as opposed to the conventional way of being optimised by varying barrier thicknesses or doping levels.

This paper focuses on the parameter optimization for the CVT (a continuously variable transmission) based plug-in 4WD (4-wheel drive) hybrid electric vehicle powertrain. First, the plug-in 4WD hybrid electric vehicle (plug-in 4WD HEV)’s energy management strategy based on the CD (charge depleting) and CS (charge sustain) mode is developed. Then, the multi-objective optimization’s mathematical model, which aims at minimizing the electric energy consumption under the CD stage, the fuel consumption under the CS stage and the acceleration time from 0−120 km/h, is established. Finally, the multi-objective parameter optimization problem is solved using an evolutionary based non-dominated sorting genetic algorithms-II (NSGA-II) approach. Some of the results are compared with the original scheme and the classical weight approach. Compared with the original scheme, the best compromise solution (i.e., electric energy consumption, fuel consumption and acceleration time) obtained using the NSGA-II approach are reduced by 1.21%, 6.18% and 5.49%, respectively. Compared with the weight approach, the Pareto optimal solutions obtained using NSGA-II approach are better distributed over the entire Pareto optimal front, as well as the best compromise solution is also better.

The airflow dynamics observed during a cough process in a CT-scanned respiratory airway model were numerically analyzed using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method. The model and methodology were validated by a comparison with published experimental results. The influence of the cough peak flow rate on airflow dynamics and flow distribution was studied. The maximum velocity, wall pressure, and wall shear stress increased linearly as the cough peak flow increased. However, the cough peak flow rate had little influence on the flow distribution of the left and right main bronchi during the cough process. This article focuses on the mathematical and numerical modelling for human cough process in bioengineering.

With plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), the catalyst temperature is below the light-off temperature due to reduced engine load, extended engine off period, and frequent engine on/off shifting. The conversion efficiency of a three-way catalyst (TWC) and tailpipe emissions were proven to depend heavily on the temperature of the catalyst. The existing energy management strategy (EMS) of the PHEVs focuses on the improvement of fuel efficiency and emissions based on hot engine characteristics, but neglects the effect of catalyst temperature on tailpipe emissions. This paper presents a new EMS that incorporates a catalyst thermal management method. First, an additional cost is established to implement additional constraints on catalyst temperature, and then the global cost function is created using this additional cost and the fuel consumption. Second, we find the global optimal solution using Pontryagin’s minimum principle method, which provides an optimal control policy and state trajectories. Then, based on the analysis of the optimal control policy, an engine on/off filter (eng on/off filter) is introduced to command the engine on/off shifting. This filter plays an important role in adjusting both the energy and catalyst thermal management strategy for PHEVs. Finally, a practical approach based on the eng on/off filter is developed, and a genetic algorithm is applied to optimize the time constants of this filter. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed approach‘s fuel consumption increased slightly, but the tailpipe emissions of HC (hydrocarbons), CO (carbon monoxide) and NOx (nitrogen oxide) significantly decreased compared with the standard approach.

Transition metal ions doped indium oxide nanomaterials were potentially used as a kind of diluted magnetic semiconductors in transparent spintronic devices. In this paper, the influences of Ni2+ doped contents and rhombohedral or cubic crystalline structures of indium oxide on magnetic properties were investigated. We found that the magnetic properties of Ni2+ doped indium oxide could be transferred from room temperature ferromagnetisms to paramagnetic properties with increments of doped contents. Moreover, the different crystalline structures of indium oxide also greatly affected the room temperature ferromagnetisms due to different lattice constants and almost had no effects on their paramagnetic properties. In addition, both the ferromagnetic and paramagnetic properties were demonstrated to be intrinsic and not caused by impurities.

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) with advantages including abundance in earth, nontoxicity, high chemical stability, surface hydrophobicity in dark, and extremely high permittivity could be highly promising for advanced electronics. However, the thermal stability and low bandgap (Eg) of TiO2 pose a big challenge for TiO2 to be used as dielectric, which could be resolved by doping with other metal cations. In this work, we studied the impact of gallium incorporation on electrical and material characteristics of TiO2 thin films. These TiO2 and TiXGaO films with thickness of 15 nm were derived by atomic layer deposition (ALD) and then annealed in O2 ambient at 500°C, where the levels of Ga incorporation were tuned by the cycle ratio (X) of TiO2 to that of Ga2O3 during ALD growth. Both thin film transistors (TFTs) using TiXGaO (TiO2) thin films as the channel and metal-oxide semiconductor capacitors (MOSCAPs) using TiXGaO (TiO2) thin films as the dielectric were fabricated to unravel the impact of Ga incorporation on electrical properties of TiO2 thin films. It is found that the Ga incorporation reduces the conductivity of TiO2 thin films significantly. Pure TiO2 thin films could be the ideal channel material for TFTs with excellent switching behaviors whereas Ga-incorporated TiO2 thin films could be the dielectric material for MOSCAPs with good insulating properties. The leakage current and dielectric constant (k) value are also found to be decreased with the increased Ga content in TiXGaO/Si MOSCAPs. Additionally, the density of interface trap (Dit) between TiXGaO and Si were extracted by multi-frequency conductance method, where a "U-shape" trap profile with similar level of Dit values can be observed for TiXGaO MOSCAPs with varying Ga contents. Material characterizations show that the Ga incorporation destabilizes the crystallization and enlarges the bandgap (Eg) of TiO2 while maintaining a smooth surface. Interestingly, Ga incorporation is found to decrease the overall oxygen content and introduce more oxygenrelated defects in the film. As a result, the reduction of leakage current upon Ga incorporation in MOSCAPs could be explained by amorphization of the film and enlarged band offset to Si rather than oxygen defect passivation. These Gaincorporated TiO2 films may found promising usage in future electronic device applications such as trench capacitors in dynamic random-access memory, where the emerging high-k dielectrics with low leakage currents and high thermal stability are demanded.
