Background: Atrial septal defect (ASD) is one of the most common congenital heart diseases. The diagnosis of ASD via transthoracic echocardiography is subjective and time-consuming. Methods: The objective of this study was to evaluate the feasibility and accuracy of automatic detection of ASD in children based on color Doppler echocardiographic static images using end-to-end convolutional neural networks. The proposed depthwise separable convolution model identifies ASDs with static color Doppler images in a standard view. Among the standard views, we selected two echocardiographic views, i.e., the subcostal sagittal view of the atrium septum and the low parasternal four-chamber view. The developed ASD detection system was validated using a training set consisting of 396 echocardiographic images corresponding to 198 cases. Additionally, an independent test dataset of 112 images corresponding to 56 cases was used, including 101 cases with ASDs and 153 cases with normal hearts. Results: The average area under the receiver operating characteristic curve, recall, precision, specificity, F1-score, and accuracy of the proposed ASD detection model were 91.99, 80.00, 82.22, 87.50, 79.57, and 83.04, respectively. Conclusions: The proposed model can accurately and automatically identify ASD, providing a strong foundation for the intelligent diagnosis of congenital heart diseases.

Abstract Gene drive systems could be a viable strategy to prevent pathogen transmission or suppress vector populations by propagating drive alleles with super-Mendelian inheritance. CRISPR-based homing gene drives convert wild type alleles into drive alleles in heterozygotes with Cas9 and gRNA. It is thus desirable to identify Cas9 promoters that yield high drive conversion rates, minimize the formation rate of resistance alleles in both the germline and the early embryo, and limit somatic Cas9 expression. In Drosophila, the nanos promoter avoids leaky somatic expression, but at the cost of high embryo resistance from maternally deposited Cas9. To improve drive efficiency, we test eleven Drosophila melanogaster germline promoters. Some achieve higher drive conversion efficiency with minimal embryo resistance, but none completely avoid somatic expression. However, such somatic expression often does not carry detectable fitness costs for a rescue homing drive targeting a haplolethal gene, suggesting somatic drive conversion. Supporting a 4-gRNA suppression drive, one promoter leads to a low drive equilibrium frequency due to fitness costs from somatic expression, but the other outperforms nanos, resulting in successful suppression of the cage population. Overall, these Cas9 promoters hold advantages for homing drives in Drosophila species and may possess valuable homologs in other organisms.

The inclusions, microstructure evolution and impact toughness of the coarse-grained heat-affected zone (CGHAZ) of Al–Ti–Ca deoxidized shipbuilding steel plates with different Al contents after high-heat input welding of 400 kJ cm−1 are investigated. The characteristics of inclusions and their influence on the refinement of microstructure and impact toughness in CGHAZ was elucidated. Increasing the Al content from 0.016 wt% to 0.022 wt% and 0.043 wt% results in an increase in the average size of prior austenite grain and the brittle phase fractions, while decreasing the content of intragranular acicular ferrites (IAFs). The results of the thermodynamic calculations, high-temperature laser scanning confocal microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry all show that increasing the Al content can diminish the austenitic stable region, elevate the transition temperature from austenite to ferrite and suppress the nucleation of IAF. In the present steels, the IAF formation is successfully induced by the specific inclusions, namely Al2O3–CaO–Ti2O3–MnS(-CaS), in which the calcium aluminate inclusions are embedded with Ti-oxides and CaS–MnS precipitates. The effective inclusions have the number density of 93 mm−2 in 16Al steel and 27 mm−2 in 22Al steel, but they are rarely found in 43Al steel. On average, an effective inclusion can induce 3.4 IAFs in 16Al steel and 2.8 IAFs in 22Al steel. Thus, as the Al content increases from 0.016 wt% to 0.22 wt% and 0.043 wt%, the impact toughness of CGHAZ at −40 °C decreases from 134 J to 78 J and 24 J with the welding heat input of 400 kJ cm−1.

Abstract Background Recent researches have found a strong correlation between the triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index or the atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. However, there is a lack of research on non-invasive and rapid prediction of cardiovascular risk. We aimed to develop and validate a machine-learning model for predicting cardiovascular risk based on variables encompassing clinical questionnaires and oculomics. Methods We collected data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). The training dataset (80% from the year 2008 to 2011 KNHANES) was used for machine learning model development, with internal validation using the remaining 20%. An external validation dataset from the year 2012 assessed the model’s predictive capacity for TyG-index or AIP in new cases. We included 32122 participants in the final dataset. Machine learning models used 25 algorithms were trained on oculomics measurements and clinical questionnaires to predict the range of TyG-index and AIP. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 score were used to evaluate the performance of our machine learning models. Results Based on large-scale cohort studies, we determined TyG-index cut-off points at 8.0, 8.75 (upper one-third values), 8.93 (upper one-fourth values), and AIP cut-offs at 0.318, 0.34. Values surpassing these thresholds indicated elevated cardiovascular risk. The best-performing algorithm revealed TyG-index cut-offs at 8.0, 8.75, and 8.93 with internal validation AUCs of 0.812, 0.873, and 0.911, respectively. External validation AUCs were 0.809, 0.863, and 0.901. For AIP at 0.34, internal and external validation achieved similar AUCs of 0.849 and 0.842. Slightly lower performance was seen for the 0.318 cut-off, with AUCs of 0.844 and 0.836. Significant gender-based variations were noted for TyG-index at 8 (male AUC=0.832, female AUC=0.790) and 8.75 (male AUC=0.874, female AUC=0.862) and AIP at 0.318 (male AUC=0.853, female AUC=0.825) and 0.34 (male AUC=0.858, female AUC=0.831). Gender similarity in AUC (male AUC=0.907 versus female AUC=0.906) was observed only when the TyG-index cut-off point equals 8.93. Conclusion We have established a simple and effective non-invasive machine learning model that has good clinical value for predicting cardiovascular risk in the general population.

Abstract Background Advancement in agricultural biotechnology has resulted in increasing numbers of commercial varieties of genetically modified (GM) crops worldwide. Though several databases on GM crops are available, these databases generally focus on collecting and providing information on transgenic crops rather than on screening strategies. To overcome this, we constructed a novel tool named, Genetically Modified Organisms Identification Tool (GMOIT), designed to integrate basic and genetic information on genetic modification events and detection methods. Results At present, data for each element from 118 independent genetic modification events in soybean, maize, canola, and rice were included in the database. Particularly, GMOIT allows users to customize assay ranges and thus obtain the corresponding optimized screening strategies using common elements or specific locations as the detection targets with high flexibility. Using the 118 genetic modification events currently included in GMOIT as the range and algorithm selection results, a “6 + 4” protocol (six exogenous elements and four endogenous reference genes as the detection targets) covering 108 events for the four crops was established. Plasmids pGMOIT-1 and pGMOIT-2 were constructed as positive controls or calibrators in qualitative and quantitative transgene detection. Conclusions Our study provides a simple, practical tool for selecting, detecting, and screening strategies for a sustainable and efficient application of genetic modification.

Objective Geographic defect reconstruction in load‐bearing bones presents formidable challenges for orthopaedic surgeon. The use of 3D‐printed personalized implants presents a compelling opportunity to address this issue. This study aims to design, manufacture, and evaluate 3D‐printed personalized implants with irregular lattice porous structures for geographic defect reconstruction in load‐bearing bones, focusing on feasibility, osseointegration, and patient outcomes. Methods This retrospective study involved seven patients who received 3D‐printed personalized lattice implants for the reconstruction of geographic defects in load‐bearing bones. Personalized implants were customized for each patient. Randomized dodecahedron unit cells were incorporated within the implants to create the porous structure. The pore size and porosity were analyzed. Patient outcomes were assessed through a combination of clinical and radiological evaluations. Tomosynthesis‐Shimadzu metal artifact reduction technology (T‐SMART) was utilized to evaluate osseointegration. Functional outcomes were assessed according to the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society (MSTS) 93 score. Results Multiple pore sizes were observed in porous structures of the implant, with a wide distribution range (approximately 300–900 um). The porosity analysis results showed that the average porosity of irregular porous structures was around 75.03%. The average follow‐up time was 38.4 months, ranging from 25 to 50 months. Postoperative X‐rays showed that the implants matched the geographic bone defect well. Osseointegration assessments according to T‐SMART images indicated a high degree of bone‐to‐implant contact, along with favorable bone density around the implants. Patient outcomes assessments revealed significant improvements in functional outcomes, with the average MSTS score of 27.3 (range, 26–29). There was no implant‐related complication, such as aseptic loosening or structure failure. Conclusion 3D‐printed personalized lattice implants offer an innovative and promising strategy for geographic defect reconstruction in load‐bearing bones. This approach has the potential to match the unique contours and geometry of the geographic bone defect and facilitate osteointegration.

BackgroundInvolvement of the distal fibula by alveolar soft-part sarcoma is rare. Extensive resection or amputation may be needed; however, distal fibula resection can disrupt foot and ankle biomechanics, leading to ankle joint instability. Reports on joint preservation for maintaining optimal ankle joint function are scarce. Computer-aided design and individualized three-dimensional (3D)-printed uncemented implants represent an evolving solution for reconstructing the distal fibula.Case presentationA 34-year-old woman was diagnosed with alveolar soft-part sarcoma in the right lower leg involving the cortical bone of the fibula. After anlotinib treatment, the tumor size decreased, and the tumor response rate was a partial response (PR); however, the patient continued to experience adverse reactions. With multiple disciplinary team discussions, surgical resection was deemed appropriate. Due to the extensive defect and ankle joint instability after resection, a custom-made 3D−printed prosthesis was designed and fabricated to reconstruct the defect, preserving the lateral malleolus. During the follow-up, the patient achieved favorable ankle function, and no prosthesis-related complications were observed.Conclusion3D-printed personalized uncemented implants constitute a novel approach and method for addressing the reconstruction issues of the distal fibula and ankle joint. Through the personalized design of 3D-printed prostheses, the lateral malleolus can be preserved, ensuring the normal anatomical structure of the ankle joint. They achieve a well-integrated interface between the prosthesis and bone, ensuring satisfactory postoperative function. Additionally, they offer valuable insights for reconstructing distal bone defects near joints in the extremities. However, confirming these findings requires extensive cohort studies.

Abstract Cell migration is critical for tissue development and regeneration but requires extracellular environments that are conducive to motion. Cells may actively generate migratory routes in vivo by degrading or remodeling their environments or instead utilize existing extracellular matrix microstructures or microtracks as innate pathways for migration. While hydrogels in general are valuable tools for probing the extracellular regulators of 3-dimensional migration, few recapitulate these natural migration paths. Here, we develop a biopolymer-based bicontinuous hydrogel system that comprises a covalent hydrogel of enzymatically crosslinked gelatin and a physical hydrogel of guest and host moieties bonded to hyaluronic acid. Bicontinuous hydrogels form through controlled solution immiscibility, and their continuous subdomains and high micro-interfacial surface area enable rapid 3D migration, particularly when compared to homogeneous hydrogels. Migratory behavior is mesenchymal in nature and regulated by biochemical and biophysical signals from the hydrogel, which is shown across various cell types and physiologically relevant contexts (e.g., cell spheroids, ex vivo tissues, in vivo tissues). Our findings introduce a design that leverages important local interfaces to guide rapid cell migration.

Mining user satisfaction decision stages from online reviews is helpful for understanding user preferences and conducting user-centered product improvements. Therefore, this study develops a two-stage nonlinear user satisfaction decision model (USDM). First, we use word2vec technology and lexicon-based sentiment analysis to mine the sentiment polarity of each product attribute in the reviews. Then, we develop KANO mapping rules using utility functions to classify consumer preferences based on attribute importance. Based on this, a two-stage nonlinear USDM is developed to describe post-purchase evaluation behavior. In the first non-compensatory stage, consumers determine their initial satisfaction level based on the performance of basic attributes. If the performance of these attributes is poor, it is almost impossible for users to be satisfied. In the compensatory stage, the performance of the remaining attributes collectively affects final satisfaction through participation in user utility calculation. With the use of reviews from JD.com, we develop a genetic algorithm to determine feasible solutions for the USDM and verify its validity and robustness. The USDM is proven to be effective in predicting user satisfaction compared to other classic models and machine learning algorithms. This study provides a universal pattern for user satisfaction decisions and extends the study on preference analysis.

Background Intercalary reconstruction for patients with short residual bone segments remains challenging. Three‐dimensional (3D)‐printed custom‐made porous implants are a promising technique for short‐segment fixation in these patients. This study aims to evaluate the efficiency of 3D‐printed custom‐made porous components (3DCPCs) for short‐segment fixation, focusing on prosthesis survivorship, radiographic results, and potential complications. Methods This retrospective study involved 39 patients who underwent intercalary prosthetic reconstruction with 3DCPCs after tumor resection of the femur, tibia, or humerus from June 2015 to October 2020. Segment bone loss involved the femur (n = 15), tibia (n = 16), and humerus (n = 8), leaving 78 residual bone segments. There were 46 short segments requiring 46 3DCPCs and 32 segments with the ability to accommodate 32 off‐the‐shelf standard uncemented stems for prosthesis fixation. Clinical and functional outcomes were evaluated. Prosthesis‐overall survivorship and prosthesis‐specific survivorship were analyzed using Kaplan–Meier survival analysis. Radiographic results and modes of failure of using this technique were also examined. Results The mean follow‐up was 41 months. The prosthesis‐overall survivorship was 87.2% and 84.6% at 2 and 5 years, respectively. The prosthesis‐specific survivorship was 92.1% and 89.5% at 2 and 5 years, respectively. There was not a substantial difference in prosthesis survivorship among the femur, tibia, and humerus. The average MSTS score was 26.2, ranging from 22 to 28. The radiographic evaluation results revealed excellent or good interface (38/46) in most of the 46 porous components. A total of 38 of 46 bone segments’ remolding demonstrated no change. In total, seven patients (16.3%) had complications requiring further surgery. Conclusion The prosthesis survivorship of using 3DCPCs for short‐segment fixation is similar or better compared to other studies involving intercalary prosthetic reconstruction with short‐segment fixation. Radiographic evaluation revealed good osteointegration and avoidance of stress shielding. Overall, intercalary prosthetic reconstruction with 3DCPC is a feasible modality for patients with short residual bone segments after tumor resection.

Many failures of semiconductor-based oxide confined vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) are closely related to the generation and expansion of defects in the device structure. However, existing research has predominantly focused on the static study of defect morphology, with little attention given to analyzing the dynamic process of defect expansion, which limited our ability to predict device random failures due to lack of understandings on defect generation and expansion. To address this issue, we present a macroscopic phenomenological evolution model that describes the dynamic expansion of defects in VCSELs, in which the expansion of defects is treated as an anisotropic lattice strain diffusion process. We further exploit a diffusion-limited aggregation (DLA) method in solving the diffusion equation, which describes the random propagation and aggregation of strain in the vicinity of highly strained areas, resulting in defect formation when the stress from accumulated strain surpasses the bonding force of the atoms in the lattice. Our simulation result manages to replicate the dendritic expansion morphology of defects, aligning with experimental observations very well. Our model also predicts an accelerated defect expansion process, which is again consistent with the experimental result. This model finds relevance in applications such as random failure prediction through device aging, burn-in condition setting in device screening, and device structural and/or material design improvement for mitigating defect expansion.

PLATZ is a novel zinc finger DNA-binding protein that plays an important role in regulating plant growth and development and resisting abiotic stress. However, there has been very little research on the function of this family gene in tomatoes, which limits its application in germplasm resource improvement. Therefore, the PLATZ gene family was identified and analyzed in tomato, and its roles were predicted and verified to provide a basis for in-depth research on SlPLATZ gene function. In this study, the PLATZ family members of tomato were identified in the whole genome, and 19 SlPLATZ genes were obtained. Functional prediction was conducted based on gene and promoter structure analysis and RNA-seq-based expression pattern analysis. SlPLATZ genes that responded significantly under different abiotic stresses or were significantly differentially expressed among multiple tissues were screened as functional gene resources. SlPLATZ17 was selected for functional verification by experiment-based analysis. The results showed that the downregulation of SlPLATZ17 gene expression reduced the drought and salt tolerance of tomato plants. Tomato plants overexpressing SlPLATZ17 had larger flower sizes and long, thin petals, adjacent petals were not connected at the base, and the stamen circumference was smaller. This study contributes to understanding the functions of the SlPLATZ family in tomato and provides a reference for functional gene screening.

Anchor cables in water-rich roadways frequently experience severe corrosion and resultant fractures due to the combined effects of mine water and high stress. However, the precise factors influencing corrosion on these cables remain ambiguous, presenting challenges to roadway support safety. This study investigated the impact of major ions present in weakly alkaline mine water on anchor cable corrosion using salt spray corrosion experiments. The results indicated that major anions such as Cl- notably influence anchor cable corrosion, which primarily manifested as pitting corrosion. The nominal yield strength decreased by 95.68–156.01 MPa, and the nominal tensile strength decreased by 133.44–202.77 MPa because of a decrease in the cross-sectional area. During the corrosion process, major anions such as Cl- continuously degraded the passivation film on the surface of the anchor cable, exposing its internal metal structure and exacerbating corrosion until eventual fracture failure occurred. Therefore, this paper proposes a corrosion protection technique for mine anchor cables to realize superior protective effects compared to conventional anchor cables used concurrently in field applications.

Summary: This study introduces a novel virtual cursor control system designed to empower individuals with neuromuscular disabilities in the digital world. By combining eye-tracking with motor imagery (MI) in a hybrid brain-computer interface (BCI), the system enhances cursor control accuracy and simplicity. Real-time classification accuracy reaches 87.92% (peak of 93.33%), with cursor stability in the gazing state at 96.1%. Integrated into common operating systems, it enables tasks like text entry, online chatting, email, web surfing, and picture dragging, with an average text input rate of 53.2 characters per minute (CPM). This technology facilitates fundamental computing tasks for patients, fostering their integration into the online community and paving the way for future developments in BCI systems.

This paper investigated the spin splitting of the reflected beam with a vortex beam irradiating on a hyperbolic metasurface. This metasurface structure is the periodically rectangular-groove array on the surface of a hyperbolic crystal with the optical axis normal to its surface, where the array is a sub-wavelength biaxially hyperbolic grating with its periodical direction situated in the surface plane. Based on the hexagonal nitride boron crystal, we theoretically and numerically analyzed the spatial and angular spin splittings of the reflected beam, containing those produced by the transverse and longitudinal shifts. We found that the spatial shifts or spin splitting can be obtained in the first-order approximation of beam deflection, but the angular shifts can be described in the second-order approximation so that it enormously varies with the beam waist. Due to the hyperbolic anisotropy of the metasurface and the intrinsic orbital angular momentum in the incident beam, the expressions of spatial and angular shifts are effectively modified, and a unique double reflection effect occurs on the surface. Near certain reflective intensity distribution singularities, extremely asymmetrical spin splitting can be observed. These shifts and spin splitting can be tuned by varying the orientation of the incident plane and the angle of incidence.

In light of the growing urgency surrounding energy and environmental concerns, this paper presents a two-layer iterative energy dispatch strategy tailored for a multi-energy-flow virtual power plant (VPP) operating within the distribution power grid. The proposed strategy unfolds in two key phases. First, it establishes an energy dispatch framework designed specifically for the multi-energy-flow VPP within the distribution power grid. Subsequently, it introduces an improved ant colony algorithm aimed at optimizing the output power of each VPP. In addition, the paper presents an optimization method for substation energy dispatch. This method uses a delay-aware consensus algorithm with the substation dispatch cost increment rate as the consensus variable, taking into account the communication delay between VPPs. Integrating a proportional–derivative (PD) control mechanism enhances the convergence speed of the delay-aware consensus algorithm and enables real-time energy dispatch of the multi-energy-flow VPP. The paper presents its conclusions by validating the efficacy of the proposed approach through simulation, thereby addressing the challenges and adapting to the shifting energy and environmental landscape.

We present an analysis of the enhanced spin Hall effect of light (SHEL) resulting from a reflected Airy beam off the interface of an air-topological insulator (TI). Our study suggests that the surface conductivity of TI film and the decay factors of Airy beams are crucial in increasing the spin-splitting distance and the spatial shifts of the left-handed circularly polarized (LCP) and right-handed circularly polarized (RCP) components. An apparent spatial shift asymmetry depending on the decay factors can be observed between the LCP and RCP components, where the coupling of intrinsic and extrinsic angular momentum will play a significant impact. The connection among the thickness of TI film, chemical potential and the incident frequency at the fixed decay factors is thoroughly examined to achieve the maximum of spatial shifts. We find that the coupling between the upper and lower surfaces’ conductivity could be responsible for the pronounced SHEL. These conclusions can be extended to other interfaces of comparable structures, such as insulators coated with a layer of two-dimensional Dirac material. Our work provides novel insights into the use of innovative beams incident on the surface of TI film and their potential applications in optical detection.

Abstract Background This study aimed to investigate the neuroanatomical subtypes among early-onset schizophrenia (EOS) patients by exploring the association between structural alterations and molecular mechanisms using a combined analysis of morphometric similarity network (MSN) changes and specific transcriptional expression patterns. Methods We recruited 206 subjects aged 7 to 17 years, including 100 EOS patients and 106 healthy controls (HC). Heterogeneity through discriminant analysis (HYDRA) was used to identify the EOS subtypes within the MSN strength. The differences in morphometric similarity between each EOS subtype and HC were compared. Furthermore, we examined the link between morphometric changes and brain-wide gene expression in different EOS subtypes using partial least squares regression (PLS) weight mapping, evaluated genetic commonalities with psychiatric disorders, identified functional enrichments of PLS-weighted genes, and assessed cellular transcriptional signatures. Results Two distinct MSN-based EOS subtypes were identified, each exhibiting different abnormal MSN strength and cognitive functions compared to HC. The PLS1 score mapping demonstrated anterior–posterior gradients of gene expression in EOS1, whereas inverse distributions were observed in EOS2 cohorts. Abstract Background Depression is increasingly recognized as a worldwide serious, public health concern. A better understanding of depression is important for advancing its management and learning the difference between major depressive disorder (MDD) and dysthymia. Our aim is to conduct a concurrent analysis of the trends of both MDD and dysthymia in China. Methods The data on depression from 1990 to 2019 were collected from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019 (GBD 2019). To determine the average annual percent changes (AAPC) and relative risks (RRs), joinpoint regression and the age-period-cohort models were employed, respectively. Results The incidence number of MDD and dysthymia continuously increased in China from 1990 to 2019, however, the age-standardized rates (ASR) had a decreasing trend in both men and women. Background Aseptic loosening is considered to be a rather uncommon complication in proximal humerus endoprosthetic replacement (PHER). However, patients with aseptic loosening often suffer severe bone loss, which poses a great challenge in following revision. Under this situation, a standard stemmed endoprosthesis is unavailable for revision limb salvage. Computer‐aided design and 3D‐printed personalized implants are an emerging solution for reconstructing complex bone defects. Case Presentation Here, we present a 67‐year‐old male who underwent PHER after tumor resection and developed aseptic loosening with severe periprosthetic osteolysis around the stem. Computer‐aided design and 3D‐printed personalized stem‐plate composite was used for the precision revision of this patient. During the follow‐up, encouraging results were observed, with good endoprosthetic stability and satisfactory limb function. Conclusion Computer‐aid design and 3D‐printed personalized stem‐plate composite used in the present case could help to achieve good endoprosthetic stability and satisfactory limb function. This 3D‐printed personalized stem‐plate composite seems to be an effective method for the precise revision of PHER in patients with severe periprosthetic osteolysis. In addition, it also provides a novel method for similar revision surgery of other joints or primary endoprosthetic replacement with severe bone defects.

Current research on the formation of inner spatial culture and art of ancestral halls in Lingnan, China, reveals discontinuities in historical and spatial dimensions of plurality, locality, and culture. These traits are influenced to some extent by the interaction of broad political settings and micro-geographical elements, and their relevance to the cultural transformation of Lingnan ancestral halls remains blurred. With the aid of text mining algorithms, this paper analyzes the factors influencing the interior spatial characteristics of Lingnan ancestral halls from the perspective of cultural geography. It then deciphers the logic of cultural formation behind those spatial characteristics through the dimension of “time-space-geography,” offering new insights for the study of the cultural heritage value of ancestral halls. The research process shows that: 1) the number of space widths and depths in Lingnan ancestral halls is typically in the singular system; 2) the size of the construction of Lingnan ancestral halls has decreased through time; 3) the number of space widths and depths in Lingnan ancient halls did not exhibit a wholly positive link with their dimension. The study concludes that the main developmental lineage in the construction of the Lingnan ancestral halls culture is the economic and cultural push directed by political influence. The functional adjustments made to ancestral halls somewhat mirror those made to the clan genealogy and cemetery ritual systems, but they are not set; rather, they evolve as the state’s politics and the economy alter.

Abstract Immune checkpoints play key roles in maintaining self-tolerance. Targeted potentiation of the checkpoint molecule PD-L1 through in situ manipulation offers clinical promise for patients with autoimmune diseases. However, the therapeutic effects of these approaches are often compromised by limited specificity and inadequate expression. Here, we report a two-step dual-anchor coupling strategy for enhanced immobilization of PD-L1 on target endogenous cells by integrating bioorthogonal chemistry and physical insertion of the cell membrane. In both type 1 diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis mouse models, we demonstrate that this approach leads to elevated and sustained conjugation of PD-L1 on target cells, resulting in significant suppression of autoreactive immune cell activation, recruitment of regulatory T cells, and systematic reshaping of the immune environment. Furthermore, it restores glucose homeostasis in type 1 diabetic mice for over 100 days. This specific in situ bioengineering approach potentiates the functions of PD-L1 and represents its translational potential.

The utilization of unmanned sailboats as a burgeoning instrument for ocean exploration and monitoring is steadily rising. In this study, a dual sail configuration is put forth to augment the sailboats’ proficiency in its wind-catching ability and adapt to the harsh environment of the sea. This proposition is based on a thorough investigation of sail aerodynamics. The symmetric rigid wing sails NACA 0020 and NACA 0016 are selected for use as the mainsail and trailing wing sail, respectively, after considering the operational environment of unmanned sailboats. The wing sail structure is modeled using SolidWorks, and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations are conducted using ANSYS Fluent 2022R1 software to evaluate the aerodynamic performance of the sails. Key aerodynamic parameters, including lift, drag, lift coefficient, drag coefficient, and thrust coefficient, are obtained under different angles of attack. Furthermore, the effects of mainsail aspect ratios, mainsail taper ratios, and the positional relationship between the mainsail and trailing sail on performance are analyzed to determine the optimal structure. The thrust provided by the sail to the boat is mainly generated by the decomposition of lift, and the lift coefficient is used to measure the efficiency of an object in generating lift in the air. The proposed sail structure demonstrates a 37.1% improvement in the peak lift coefficient compared to traditional flexible sails and exhibits strong propulsion capability, indicating its potential for widespread application in the marine field.

Abstract The rise of new media has greatly changed the lifestyles, leading to increased time on these platforms and less time spent reading. This shift has particularly profound impacts on early adolescents, who are in a critical stage of brain development. Previous studies have found associations between screen use and mental health, but it remains unclear whether screen use is the direct cause of the outcomes. Here, the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) dataset is utlized to examine the causal relationships between screen use and brain development. The results revealed adverse causal effects of screen use on language ability and specific behaviors in early adolescents, while reading has positive causal effects on their language ability and brain volume in the frontal and temporal regions. Interestingly, increased screen use is identified as a result, rather than a cause, of certain behaviors such as rule‐breaking and aggressive behaviors. Furthermore, the analysis uncovered an indirect influence of screen use, mediated by changes in reading habits, on brain development. These findings provide new evidence for the causal influences of screen use on brain development and highlight the importance of monitoring media use and related habit change in children.

Mixed‐dimensional perovskites possess unique photoelectric properties and are widely used in perovskite solar cells (PSCs) to improve their efficiency and stability. However, there is a pressing need for a deeper understanding of the physical mechanisms and design principles of mixed‐dimensional PSCs, as such knowledge gaps impose restrictions on unlocking the full potential of this kind of PSC. Herein, a 2D/3D PSC is employed as an example to clarify the working mechanism of mixed‐dimensional PSCs from the perspective of device physics and elaborate on the design rules of high‐efficiency mixed‐dimensional PSCs. Detailed simulation results indicate that the insertion of a layer of 2D perovskite between the 3D perovskite and the hole transport layer (HTL) can significantly reduce the recombination at the HTL/perovskite interface, and PSCs with a 2D/3D perovskite structure exhibit higher tolerance to material selectivity compared with their 3D counterparts. Additionally, the 2D/3D perovskite design can slow down ion migration and accumulation processes, thereby easing the hysteresis behavior of 2D/3D PSCs. Moreover, it is also found that the 2D/3D perovskite structure has a more pronounced effect on improving the efficiency of wide‐bandgap PSCs. Overall, this work sheds new light on mixed‐dimensional PSCs, enabling better guidance for designing high‐efficiency PSCs.

Abstract Microneedles have emerged as a promising platform for transdermal drug delivery with prominent advantages, such as enhanced permeability, mitigated pain, and improved patient adherence. While microneedles have primarily been employed for delivering small molecules, nucleic acids, peptides, and proteins, recent researches have demonstrated their prospect in combination with cell therapy. Cell therapy involving administration or transplantation of living cells (e.g. T cells, stem cells, and pancreatic cells) has gained significant attention in preclinical and clinical applications for various disease treatments. However, the effectiveness of systemic cell delivery may be restricted in localized conditions like solid tumors and skin disorders due to limited penetration and accumulation into the lesions. In this perspective, an overview of recent advances in microneedle‐assisted cell delivery for immunotherapy, tissue regeneration, and hormone modulation, with respect to their mechanical property, cell loading capacity, as well as viability and bioactivity of the loaded cells is provided. Potential challenges and future perspectives with microneedle‐mediated cell therapy are also discussed.

BackgroundExtracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) represents an important but limited treatment for patients with severe COVID-19. We assessed the effects of an educational intervention on a person's ECMO care preference and examined whether patients and providers had similar ECMO preferences.MethodsIn the Video+Survey group, patients watched an educational video about ECMO's purpose, benefits, and risks followed by an assessment of ECMO knowledge and care preferences in seven scenarios varying by hypothetical patient age, function, and comorbidities. Patients in the Survey Only group and providers didn't watch the video. Logistic regression was used to estimate the probability of agreement for each ECMO scenario between the two patient groups and then between all patients and providers.ResultsVideo+Survey patients were more likely (64% vs. 17%; p = 0.02) to correctly answer all ECMO knowledge questions than Survey Only patients. Patients in both groups agreed that ECMO should be considered across all hypothetical scenarios, with predicted agreement above 65%. In adjusted analyses, patients and providers had similar predicted agreement for ECMO consideration across six of the seven scenarios, but patients showed greater preference (84% vs. 41%, p = 0.003) for the scenario of a functionally dependent 65-year-old with comorbidities than providers.Discussion and conclusionsAn educational video increased a person's ECMO knowledge but did not change their ECMO preferences. Clinicians were less likely than patients to recommend ECMO for older adults, so advanced care planning discussion between patients and providers about treatment options in critically ill patients with COVID-19 is critical.

Scraper conveyor is the most important transportation equipment in the comprehensive mining equipment, and the chain drive system is its core subsystem, its dynamic characteristics will significantly affect the efficiency of coal transportation in the comprehensive mining face. In this paper, the dynamic characteristics of chain drive system when impacted by falling coal are investigated by means of test. The impact test bench of scraper conveyor was set up to analyze the effects of chain speed, impact height and impact load mass on the dynamic characteristics of the chain drive system of scraper conveyor under the working conditions of unloaded and loaded. The results show that the longitudinal vibration of the scraper conveyor is most obvious when it is impacted by the falling coal, and the chain speed, impact height and impact load mass of the scraper conveyor all play an excitation role on the vibration of the chain drive system, and the vibration of the chain ring is the most intense in the chain drive system, and the loaded coal pile conveyed on the scraper conveyor plays an inhibiting role on the vibration of the chain drive system. This study can help to identify the location where the scraper conveyor fails first in the impact condition, so as to provide a basis for its structural design and improvement, which is of great significance for the stable operation and structural optimization of the scraper conveyor.

Libman-Sacks endocarditis (LSE) is a cardiac condition characterized by the growth of verrucous vegetation. Although relatively rare in children, LSE is nevertheless a known cardiac manifestation of autoimmune diseases, including systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The mitral valve is the most commonly affected region, followed by the aortic valve, while the tricuspid and pulmonary valves are rarely affected. The management of established Libman-Sacks vegetation poses significant challenges, often necessitating surgical interventions, although surgery is not the primary treatment modality. Herein, we present the case of a 14-year-old Chinese female patient whose initial lupus manifestation included LSE, among other symptoms and signs that provided insights into the final diagnosis of SLE. After early comprehensive pharmacological treatment, tricuspid regurgitation and vegetation disappeared within 28 days without necessitating cardiac surgery, indicating that the resolution of LSE vegetation in this patient was achieved through a combination of immunosuppressive and anticoagulant therapy. These findings suggest the potential of this treatment approach as a viable model for the management of LSE in young patients.

Early-onset Schizophrenia (EOS) is a profoundly progressive psychiatric disorder characterized by both positive and negative symptoms, whose pathogenesis is influenced by genes, environment and brain structure development. In this study, the MIND (Morphometric Inverse Divergence) network was employed to explore the relationship between morphological similarity and specific transcriptional expression patterns in EOS patients. This study involved a cohort of 187 participants aged between 7 and 17 years, consisting of 97 EOS patients and 90 healthy controls (HC). Multiple morphological features were used to construct the MIND network for all participants. Furthermore, we explored the associations between MIND network and brain-wide gene expression in EOS patients through partial least squares (PLS) regression, shared genetic predispositions with other psychiatric disorders, functional enrichment of PLS weighted genes, as well as transcriptional signature assessment of cell types, cortical layers, and developmental stages. The MIND showed similarity differences in the orbitofrontal cortex, pericalcarine cortex, lingual gyrus, and multiple networks in EOS patients compared to HC. Moreover, our exploration revealed a significant overlap of PLS2 weighted genes linking to EOS-related MIND differences and the dysregulated genes reported in other psychiatric diseases. Interestingly, genes correlated with MIND changes (PLS2-) exhibited a significant enrichment not only in metabolism-related pathways, but also in specific astrocytes, cortical layers (specifically layer I and III), and posterior developmental stages (late infancy to young adulthood stages). However, PLS2+ genes were primarily enriched in synapses signaling-related pathways and early developmental stages (from early-mid fetal to neonatal early infancy) but not in special cell types or layers. These findings provide a novel perspective on the intricate relationship between macroscopic morphometric structural abnormalities and microscopic transcriptional patterns during the onset and progression of EOS.

Abstract Background The impact of depressive status (DS) on hypertension incidence is still controversial and has not been studied in Chinese middle-aged and elderly population. This study aimed to explore the relationship between DS and incident hypertension and analyze the joint effects of DS and body mass index (BMI) on hypertension incidence. Methods We conducted a prospective cohort study using data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), a nationwide population-based study. In 2013, DS was identified using scores from the 10-item Centre for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D-10) among eligible respondents from CHARLS, and hypertension occurrence was observed until 2018. The multiple Cox models were employed to calculate the associations between DS and hypertension incidence. In addition, we also computed the multiplicative interaction (MI) between DS and BMI of incident hypertension and assessed their additive interaction (AI) through relative excess risk due to interaction (RERI), attributable proportion (AP) or synthetic index (S). Positive AI was indicated by RERI > 0, AP > 0 or S > 1. Results Over the 5-year follow-up, depressive symptoms increased the risk of hypertension incidence by 19% (hazard ratio (HR) = 1.19, 95% confidence interval (CI): (1.01, 1.41)), while depression was associated with a 24% increased risk (HR = 1.24; 95% CI: (1.03, 1.50)). Significant MIs between DS and overweight or obesity were observed and almost all of AI indexes showed positive joint effects on incident hypertension, of which the depression-obesity combination had the largest joint effect (RERI = 4.47, 95%CI: (0.28, 8.66); AP = 0.67, 95%CI: (0.50, 0.85); S = 4.86,95%CI: (2.66, 8.86)). Conclusion DS could lead to hypertension and this impact was amplified when coexisting with higher BMI. It highlighted a need for precise interventions targeting weight management and depression treatment in the aging population to prevent hypertension.

The reliability design of automotive structures is characterized by numerous variables and implicit responses. The traditional design of experiments for metamodel construction often requires manual adjustment of model parameters and extensive finite element analysis, resulting in inefficiency. To address these issues, active learning-based reliability methods are effective solutions. This study proposes an active-learning reliability analysis method based on multi-software interaction. Firstly, through secondary development of different software and MATLAB (version 2023a)’s batch processing function, a multi-software interactive reliability analysis method is developed, achieving automation in structural parametric design, finite element analysis and post-processing. This provides a more efficient and convenient platform for the implementation of active learning. Secondly, the polynomial chaos–kriging (PCK) active-learning method is introduced, combining the advantages of polynomial chaos expansion (PCE) and kriging. The PCK method captures the global behavior of the computational model using regression-based PCE and local variations using interpolation-based kriging. This metamodel is constructed with fewer training samples, effectively replacing the real multi-dimensional implicit response relations, thereby improving the efficiency of modeling and reliability analysis. Finally, the specific implementation scheme is detailed. The accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method are verified by a reliability engineering example of body-in-white bending and torsional stiffness.

Silicon (Si) shows great potential as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries. However, it experiences significant expansion in volume as it undergoes the charging and discharging cycles, presenting challenges for practical implementation. Nanostructured Si has emerged as a viable solution to address these challenges. However, it requires a complex preparation process and high costs. In order to explore the above problems, this study devised an innovative approach to create Si/C composite anodes: micron-porous silicon (p-Si) was synthesized at low cost at a lower silver ion concentration, and then porous silicon-coated carbon (p-Si@C) composites were prepared by compositing nanohollow carbon spheres with porous silicon, which had good electrochemical properties. The initial coulombic efficiency of the composite was 76.51%. After undergoing 250 cycles at a current density of 0.2 A·g−1, the composites exhibited a capacity of 1008.84 mAh·g−1. Even when subjected to a current density of 1 A·g−1, the composites sustained a discharge capacity of 485.93 mAh·g−1 even after completing 1000 cycles. The employment of micron-structured p-Si improves cycling stability, which is primarily due to the porous space it provides. This porous structure helps alleviate the mechanical stress caused by volume expansion and prevents Si particles from detaching from the electrodes. The increased surface area facilitates a longer pathway for lithium-ion transport, thereby encouraging a more even distribution of lithium ions and mitigating the localized expansion of Si particles during cycling. Additionally, when Si particles expand, the hollow carbon nanospheres are capable of absorbing the resulting stress, thus preventing the electrode from cracking. The as-prepared p-Si utilizing metal-assisted chemical etching holds promising prospects as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries.

Ichthyotoxic red tide is a problem that the world is facing and needs to solve. The use of antialgal compounds from marine macroalgae to suppress ichthyotoxic red tide is considered a promising biological control method. Antialgal substances were screened and isolated from Bangia fusco-purpurea, Gelidium amansii, Gloiopeltis furcate, Hizikia fusifarme, Laminaria japonica, Palmaria palmata, and Sargassum sp. to obtain new materials for the development of algaecides against ichthyotoxic red tide microalgae using bioactivity-guided isolation methods. The fractions of seven macroalgae exhibited selective inhibitory activities against Amphidinium carterae and Karenia mikimotoi, of which the ethyl acetate fractions had the strongest and broadest antialgal activities for the two tested red tide microalgae. Their inhibitory effects on A. carterae and K. mikimotoi were even stronger than that of potassium dichromate, such as ethyl acetate fractions of B. purpurea, H. fusifarme, and Sargassum sp. Thin-layer chromatography and ultraviolet spectroscopy were further carried out to screen the ethyl acetate fraction of Sargassum sp. Finally, a new glycolipid derivative, 2-O-eicosanoyl-3-O-(6-amino-6-deoxy)-β-D-glucopyranosyl-glycerol, was isolated and identified from Sargassum sp., and it was isolated for the first time from marine macroalgae. The significant antialgal effects of 2-O-eicosanoyl-3-O-(6-amino-6-deoxy)-β-D-glucopyranosyl-glycerol on A. carterae and K. mikimotoi were determined.

Integrated ocean management (IOM) aligns with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and serves as a crucial strategy for promoting the enduring health of marine ecosystems and the sustainable utilization of marine resources. An analysis of the evolution of China’s integrated ocean management policy (IOMP) is crucial for providing valuable guidance in achieving sustainable growth in marine management and the marine economy for both China and other coastal nations worldwide. This paper studies the evolution characteristics, challenges, and prospects of IOMP in China since 1978 using content analysis. The findings indicate that the evolution of IOMP can be categorized into four stages: the germination period (1978–1998), the construction period (1999–2009), the systematization period (2010–2017), and the strategization period (2018–present), based on the state of international marine management. The IOMP has transitioned over time from its initial emphasis on resource development during the germination period to a strategization period that prioritizes the full development of all parts of the system. However, the ultimate goal has consistently been to achieve harmonious coexistence between people and the sea. China’s IOMP has experienced a progressive development; nevertheless, it continues to encounter obstacles such as the pressing requirement to revise sea-related policies and the absence of policy alignment. The objective of this paper is to explore the evolution, challenges, and prospects of China’s IOMP to better improve the land–sea coordination policy, strengthen international judicial cooperation. and provide effective policy reference for other maritime countries.

Forests are affected by a wide range of disturbances globally, resulting in the decline or death of large areas of them. There is a lack of comparative studies on how soil properties change in forests that die under the influence of disturbances, especially considering different levels of disturbance. For this study, we took Larix olgensis—a major plantation forest species in northeast China—as the research object, one in which a large outbreak of bark beetle led to large-scale forest death, and set up fixed sample plots characterized by different disturbance intensities. We investigated the responses of soil physicochemical properties and microbial community compositions to different disturbance intensities through the determination of soil nutrient indices and high-throughput sequencing. The results show that there were significant differences (p < 0.05) in the effects of different disturbance intensities on soil physicochemical properties, where the soil moisture content, total nitrogen, total carbon, and total phosphorus in the control group were significantly higher than those in the disturbed groups. The soil pH was highest under low-intensity disturbance and the soil total potassium content was highest under high-intensity disturbance. At different disturbance intensities, the highest soil moisture content was found in the high-intensity group. Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Verrucomicrobia, Acidobacteria, Candidatus_Rokubacteria, Chloroflexi, Gemmatimonadetes, and Thaumarchaeota were the dominant populations with higher abundances; meanwhile, the relative abundance of Bacteroidetes, Tenericutes, and a tentatively unclassified fungus differed significantly (p < 0.05) across disturbance intensities. Among the dominant microbial populations, Acidobacteria showed a significant negative correlation with soil pH and a significant positive correlation with total potassium content, Thaumarchaeota showed significant positive correlations with soil moisture content and total nitrogen content, and Firmicutes and Gemmatimonadetes showed significant negative correlations with total carbon content in the soil. Furthermore, soil total nitrogen content was the key factor driving changes in microbial communities. The results of this study provide a scientific basis for the study of the long-term effects of tree mortality caused by insect pests on soil microbial communities and their response mechanisms, which is of great theoretical value for the establishment of scientific and effective methods for woodland restoration.

Objective To investigate the situation of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae(CRE) colonization in patients undergoing haploidentical hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (haplo-HSCT). Methods A total of 241 consecutive patients who underwent haplo-HSCT in the First Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University from June 1, 2021 to June 1, 2022 were enrolled. Anal swab screening was performed within 48 hours of admission and blood cultures were taken when the patient developed fever. Univariate and multivariate analysis were used to analyze the colonization rate, distribution, risk factors and the correlation between CRE colonization and post-transplant bloodstream infection(BSI). Results Among 241 patients with haplo-HSCT, there were 90 cases in CRE colonization positive group, with a colonization rate of 37.3% (90/241). Abstract Background Large malignant bone tumors and revision limb salvage procedures often result in massive bone loss, leaving a short residual bone segment that cannot accommodate a standard stem for endoprosthesis fixation. Three-dimensional-printed (3DP) short stem with porous structure seems to be an alternative for short-segment fixation. This retrospective study aims to evaluate surgical outcomes, radiographical results, limb functions, and complications of using 3DP porous short stems in massive endoprosthesis replacement. Methods Between July 2018 to February 2021, 12 patients with massive bone loss undergoing reconstruction with custom-made, short-stemmed massive endoprostheses were identified. Endoprosthesis replacement involved the proximal femur (n = 4), distal femur (n = 1), proximal humerus (n = 4), distal humerus (n = 1), and proximal radius (n = 2). Results The mean percentage of resected bone was 72.4% of the whole length of the bone, ranging from 58.4 to 88.5%. The mean length of 3DP porous short stems was 6.3 cm. The median follow-up was 38 months (range, 22–58 months). The mean MSTS score was 89%, ranging from 77% to 93%. Radiographical assessment results showed bone in-growth to the porous structure in 11 patients, and the implants were well osseointegrated. Breakage of the 3DP porous short stem occurred in one patient intraoperatively. The patient developed aseptic loosening (Type 2) four-month after surgery and underwent revision with a plate applied to assist fixation. The implant survivorship was 91.7% at 2 years. No other complications were detected, such as soft-tissue failures, structural failures, infection, or tumor progression. Conclusions 3DP custom-made short stem with porous structure is a viable method for fixation of the massive endoprosthesis in the short segment after tumor resection, with satisfactory limb function, great endoprosthetic stability, and low complication rates.

Abstract Effective reprogramming of chronic wound healing remains challenging due to the limited drug delivery efficacy hindered by physiological barriers, as well as the inappropriate dosing timing in distinct healing stages. Herein, a core-shell structured microneedle array patch with programmed functions (PF-MNs) is designed to dynamically modulate the wound immune microenvironment according to the varied healing phases. Specifically, PF-MNs combat multidrug-resistant bacterial biofilm at the early stage via generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) under laser irradiation. Subsequently, the ROS-sensitive MN shell gradually degrades to expose the MN core component, which neutralizes various inflammatory factors and promotes the phase transition from inflammation to proliferation. In addition, the released verteporfin inhibits scar formation by blocking Engrailed-1 (En1) activation in fibroblasts. Our experiments demonstrate that PF-MNs promote scarless wound repair in mouse models of both acute and chronic wounds, and inhibit the formation of hypertrophic scar in rabbit ear models.

Abstract Background Homosexual contact is the main route of human immunodeficiency virus type one (HIV-1) transmission in Cangzhou Prefecture, Hebei, China. Moreover, the number of circulating recombinant forms (CRFs) and unique recombinant forms (URFs) in this key population is ever increasing. Methods In this study, we identified two novel URFs (hcz0017 and hcz0045) from two men who have sex with men (MSM) based in Cangzhou Prefecture. Phylogenetic and recombinant breakpoint analyses, based on the near full-length genomes (NFLGs) of the two novel URFs, showed that they originated from a recombination between HIV-1 CRF01_AE and subtype B. Results HXB2 numbering revealed that the NFLGs of hcz0017 and hcz0045 each contained the following seven subregions: hcz0017: IB (790–1,171 nt), IICRF01_AE (1,172–2,022 nt), IIIB (2,023–4,469 nt), IVCRF01_AE (4,470–5,866 nt), VB (5,867–7,462 nt), VICRF01_AE (7,463–8,379 nt), VIIB (8,380–9,411 nt); hcz0045: ICRF01_AE (790–5,147 nt), IIB (5,148–5,614 nt), IIICRF01_AE (5,615–6,035 nt), IVB (6,036–6,241 nt), VCRF01_AE (6,242–7,325nt), VIB (7,326–8,254 nt), VIICRF01_AE (8,255–9,411 nt). Moreover, the two MSM from whom the novel URFs originated from were diagnosed as recently HIV-1-infected, suggesting that the high prevalence of HIV-1 among MSM was related to high-risk sexual activity such as unprotected anal sex and multiple sexual partners. Conclusions Our results highlight the need to continually monitor HIV-1 diversity in Hebei and its neighboring provinces to achieve a more effective control of HIV-1 spread within the MSM community.

BackgroundSacubitril/valsartan is an angiotensin receptor neprilysin antagonist (ARNI) approved for adult heart failure (HF). Its safety and efficacy in pediatric HF patients with cardiomyopathy or congenital heart disease are poorly understood. The osteogenic and angiogenic characteristics are crucial for the selection of bone substitute materials and structural design. This study proposed a porous PLGA/n-HA/MgP composited scaffold by printing of the poly (lactide-coglycolide) (PLGA), nano-hydroxyapatite (n-HA), and magnesium phosphate (MgP). The physicochemical properties, osteogenic activities, and pro-angiogenic impacts of porous 3D printed PLGA/n-HA scaffolds with variable MgP concentration were investigated. The results indicated that the presence of MgP in the composite promoted scaffold degradation and buffered the acidic environment induced by PLGA degradation. The highest pro-osteogenic activity has been observed in PLGA/n-HA/10% MgP (PH10M) group, which up-regulated BMP2 and RUNX2 factors in vitro and in vivo. Nevertheless, at a maximal ion release of 7.2 mmol/L, PLGA/n-HA/30% MgP (PH30M) marginally reduced the osteogenic differentiation of osteoblasts through the RANKL/OPG pathway. In vitro, PLGA/n-HA/20% MgP (PH20M) demonstrated superior migration, pro-angiogenic factor expression, and angiogenesis compared to other groups, and the histological investigation corroborated the improved angiogenesis in PH10M and PH20M. In conclusion, suitable MgP ratio shows the potential to improve the osteogenic and angiogenic properties of PLGA/n-HA-based composites in orthopedic applications.

Lung cancer is one of the most prevalent tumors with rapid progression and poor prognosis, which badly affects human physical and mental health. Although traditional anti-cancer therapies, such as chemotherapy and radiation, have demonstrated some degree of effectiveness in treating tumors, they remain encumbered by the frequent, uncontrollable, and large dosage of drug administration. Here, we introduced the Gefitinib-loaded PLGA microspheres generated from microfluidics for lung cancer therapy. The microspheres had a homogeneous shape and a high drug loading rate. Studies have shown that PLGA microspheres not only provided greater loading efficiency and sustained release of gefitinib but also protected the drug from rapid breakdown. The results of animal experiments also showed that the drug-loaded microspheres could achieve or even outperform the efficiency of daily medication with less frequency. Therefore, it is foreseen that PLGA microspheres will have great potential in developing therapies for lung cancer.

High density polyethylene(HDPE) material is excellent, often made into bellows, and is an important part of the urban drainage system. The blasting seismic dynamic load is one of the key problems affecting the safety of buried pipeline structures. As a commonly used artificial source excitation method, blasting is often used to study the seismic structural response test. Combined with the characteristics of the buried typical stratum of pipelines in urban areas, full-scale blasting tests of embedded HDPE bellows are conducted. The characteristics of vibration acceleration and strain in the empty pipe under blasting vibration are monitored and analyzed. LS-DYNA is used to establish the model based on the field test conditions and verify the rationality of the model. Then, the models of different water levels are added and the dynamic response characteristics of the pipeline are calculated and analyzed. Finally, according to the max allowable stress criterion, the safety of the pipeline is evaluated.

Objective: To investigate the value of dual-source CT dual-energy virtual plain scan in the preoperative diagnosis of extramural vascular invasion (EMVI) in rectal cancer. Methods: A total of 150 patients with rectal cancer (64 females (42.7%) and 86 males (57.3%), with an average age of (62.3±11.8) years) who were scheduled for surgical treatment in our hospital from November 2019 to December 2021 were selected for the preoperative dual-source CT dual-energy virtual plain scan;. Two senior radiologists independently analyzed preoperative imaging data (including ctEMVI status, local lymph node infiltration, and distant metastasis) to determine the existence of preoperative EMVI. With pathological results as the gold standard, the sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value of VNC in the diagnosis of EMVI were evaluated, and the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) was used to evaluate the diagnostic efficiency. Results: Among 150 patients with rectal cancer, 56 (37.3%) were positive for EMVI and 94 (62.7%) were negative for EMVI. The accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value of EMVI evaluation by physician 1 were 86%, 80.36%, 89.36%, 81.82%, and 88.42%, respectively, and the AUC was 0.831 (95%CI, 0.756~0.905). The accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value of physician 2 were 88.67%, 80.36%, 93.62%, 88.24%, and 88.89%, respectively, and the AUC was 0.870 (95%CI, 0.802~0.938). The consistency of the evaluation results between physician 1 and physician 2 was high (k=0.943). Conclusion: Dual-source CT dual-energy virtual plain scan has a certain diagnostic value in the preoperative evaluation of EMVI of rectal cancer.
