1. Renal abnormalities among children with sickle cell anaemia

Abstract

Introduction: Sickle cell anaemia (SCA) is a non- communicable disease of public health significance. SCA is characterized by chronic red blood cell haemolysis and vaso- occlusion which further complicated by nitric oxide deficiency, causes oxidative damage to the body organs especially the kidneys. Objectives: To document the prevalence of renal function and structural abnormalities in children with SCA in a teaching hospital in north western Nigeria. Materials and Methods: One hundred and ten subjects with SCA in steady state without known renal or cardiac abnormalities were enrolled and matched for age and sex with controls (haemoglobin AA). Interviewer-administered questionnaires, clinical examination and renal ultrasound scans were carried out. Urinalysis, spot urine albumin creatinine ratio and serum creatinine were carried out using standardized laboratory methods. Results: Eleven (10.3%) children with SCA had haematuria while 6.5% had overt proteinuria. Children with SCA who had proteinuria were five times more likely, to develop haematuria than the controls with proteinuria (p = 0.03). Microalbuminuria was found in 24.3% of children with SCA. The mean estimated glomerular filtration rate was normal for both subjects and controls. Only three (2.8%) of the SCA subjects had increased renal echogenicity all of whom had microalbuminuria and were older than nine years. Conclusion and recommendations: Renal abnormalities were found in children with SCA occurring as early as 4 years of age. Regular screening for renal disease in children with SCA is recommended to ensure management modalities are instituted early.

Abstract

Clean and healthy lifestyle is essential for all people especially children. Based on preliminary study, Sunday School Children of the GPM Tihulale Church had less adequate knowledge and skills regarding the habits of clean and healthy lifestyle. Therefore, this community service was carried out to improve clean and healthy attitudes as well as behaviors of Sunday School Children of the GPM Tihulale Church. The program was conducted through counselling and training and covered five stages: interviewing and analyzing the partners’ needs, educating about clean and healthy behavior, giving health education and training on clean and healthy behavior, distributing free toothbrushes and toothpastes, and conducting evaluation and follow-up activities. The results obtained were an increase in children’s knowledge and skills about clean and healthy lifestyle during their time in the Sunday School Service and daily lives.

3. RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SERUM LEVEL OF IONIZED CALCIUM, MAGNESIUM, PHOSPHATE, VITAMIN D AND PARATHYROID HORMONE WITH STAGES OF CKD

Abstract

Background: Chronic kidney disease is defined as either damage or a decreased Glomerular Filtration Rate of less than 60ml/min/1.73m2 for 3 or more months. There is destruction of renal mass with irreversible sclerosis and loss of nephron leading to a progressive decline in GFR.Secondary hyperparathyroidism, hyperphosphataemia, hypocalcaemia and vitamin-D deficiency are common complications of CKD. Objective: To determine relationship between serum level of ionised calcium, magnesium, phosphate, vitamin-D and parathyroid hormone with stages of CKD. Method: This study was conducted at ABUTH Zaria. 125 consecutive adult patients in various stages of CKD who presented were enrolled and 125 apparently healthy matched for sex and age controls were also recruited. Results: 9% of patients were in stage-1, 16% in stage-2, 22% in stage-3, 12% in stage-4 and 41% in stage-5. Serum ionised calcium, vitamin-D and eCrCl showed a progressive decline as the stage of CKD advances, while serum phosphate, creatinine and iPTH showed a progressive increase as the stage of CKD advances. Changes in serum magnesium showed a slight change with advancing stages of CKD. The difference in mean serum levels of calcium, phosphorus, vitamin-D, parathyroid hormone, creatinine and eCrCl with different stages of CKD were statistically significant. eCrCl correlated negatively with phosphate and iPTH while serum creatinine correlated negatively with calcium and positively with phosphate and iPTH. Conclusion: Majority of CKD patients were in late stage. Correlation of analytes with stages was more in late stages and biochemical derangements occurred in late, rather than early stages of CKD

4. Pattern of haemostatic parameters and their relationship with microalbuminuria among hypertensives in Northern Nigeria

Abstract

Background:Hypertension is a common, non-communicable disorder of public health significance.Abnormalities in haemostasis and blood rheology have been linked to target organ damage (TOD) in hypertension. Microalbuminuria (MA) is an independent predictor of TOD. Methods:A cross-sectional study was carried out among 107 consecutively recruited hypertensives attending the Cardiology Clinic at ABUTH, Zaria, Nigeria. Complete blood counts, haemostaticscreening tests and microalbuminuria assay were performed on blood and urine specimens. Results:The mean age of participants was 50.2±11.3 years and 59.3±18.2 years for females and males respectively with a female predominance (91/107; 85%). The frequencies of abnormal platelet counts, prothrombin time, activated partial thromboplastin time, thrombin time, fibrinogen, D-dimer and MA were 15%, 57%, 54.2%, 64.5%, 100%, 25.2%, and 41% respectively.Participants with poor BP control had an increased risk of derangements in aPTT and platelet counts(OR=1.4, 1.4) but there was no significant difference in means with BP for aPTT, fibrinogen, and platelets (p=0.517, 0.257 and 0.525 respectively). The impact of the duration of hypertension was shown in D-dimer levels up to 10years. Participants on ARB/ACEI-containing regimens showed a higher risk of derangement in TT, aPTT, PT and D-dimer in contrast to platelet counts (OR=0.96, p=0.836). Haemostatic parameters showed weakly positive, statistically significant correlation on regression analysis. Conclusion:There is a high prevalence of, and positive correlation between haemostatic abnormalities and MA among hypertensives in Northern Nigeria. Abnormal haemostatic screening tests may indicate MA and increased risk of TOD.

6. The Development of Android-Based Learning Mobile App to Practice Critical Thinking Skills for Elementary School Students

Abstract

Today's increasingly rapid technological developments do not only appear in the field of communication but are also needed in education. In the education field, it is expected to instill students with adequate knowledge and critical thinking skills, which are needed for their future. Practicing critical thinking skills can be done with mobile applications because today's students are highly familiar with gadgets. In terms of education, students need a learning platform that is equipped with audio, images, and easy-to-understand text. To accommodate this, an Android-based application was designed to provide learning steps, such as analyzing, obtaining information, asking questions, and making conclusions. This study is a qualitative descriptive study using the ADDIE (analyzing, designing, developing, implementing, and evaluating) method. It includes material analysis, application design with smart apps creator (SAC), testing by media and materials experts, and overall evaluation. The trial of this application was carried out on 3rd-grade elementary school students with questionnaires and interviews. Based on the validation process by IT experts and elementary school teachers, the development of the situation-based learning (SBL) App was considered valid. In other words, this application was properly designed according to the development of lower-grade students. Furthermore, the students were interested in SBL App and found it easier to obtain information, come up with good questions, and draw conclusions from a material using the app. Therefore, it can be concluded that the SBL App developed in this study is feasible and effective to be used as an Android-based learning application to train elementary school students' critical thinking skills.

Abstract

Corrosion is a problem that occurs in the production system of industrial oil and gas. Control Corrosion in tubing production is necessary for maintaining production and well direct as tubing production is the first contact with corrosion fluid and material agent. Corrosion is caused by a chemical reaction between a material and corrosion fluid. Stainless steel has versatile applications in chemical, structure, and construction industries owing to its mechanical properties. However, it's susceptible to corrosion in acid environments. Thus, it requires to protect the steel from corrosion. Many types of corrosion resistance steel, coatings, and inhibitors are developed to mitigate the corrosion, but, the inhibitor is the best solution to control the corrosion of steel in acid conditions. But it is hazardous, expensive, and needs expertise to synthesize the inhibitor. Mono-Ethylene Glycol as an inhibitor inorganic can adsorb the water and heavy substance in oil that can make serious corrosion. Meanwhile, molasses can be used in the energy sector, especially as an inhibitor organic can be efficient characteristics which include being inexpensive, environmentally friendly, and non-toxic to the environment. Also, can self-adsorbing on the metal surface thus protecting the metal surface by forming a thin layer, and reducing the movement or diffusion of ions to the metal surface. This paper would explain tubing time limit for the thickness tubing should be re-design based on the evaluation result to optimize the use of the tubing until the end of the contract. Abstract

Abstract Elucidating the relationships between a class I peptide antigen, a CD8 T cell receptor (TCR) specific to that antigen, and the T cell phenotype that emerges following antigen stimulation, remains a mostly unsolved problem, largely due to the lack of large data sets that can be mined to resolve such relationships. Here, we describe Antigen-TCR Pairing and Multiomic Analysis of T-cells (APMAT), an integrated experimental-computational framework designed for the high-throughput capture and analysis of CD8 T cells, with paired antigen, TCR sequence, and single-cell transcriptome. Starting with 951 putative antigens representing a comprehensive survey of the SARS-CoV-2 viral proteome, we utilize APMAT for the capture and single cell analysis of CD8 T cells from 62 HLA A*02:01 COVID-19 participants. We leverage this comprehensive dataset to integrate with peptide antigen properties, TCR CDR3 sequences, and T cell phenotypes to show that distinct physicochemical features of the antigen-TCR pairs strongly associate with both T cell phenotype and T cell persistence. This analysis suggests that CD8 T cell phenotype following antigen stimulation is at least partially deterministic, rather than the result of stochastic biological properties.

Abstract

The availability of fossil fuels as an energy source is increasingly limited, so there is a need for new energy sources as environmentally friendly alternatives, one of which is bioethanol. Bioethanol is a type of biofuel sourced from living matter, usually plants with the chemical formula C2H5OH and the empirical formula C2H5O with an octane number of 108. One of the benefits of bioethanol for fuel mixtures is due to the higher octane value, flammability, heat of vaporization and higher oxygen content lowers cylinder temperature thereby reducing NOx emissions and producing less CO2. This study aims to evaluate the performance of a 4 stroke engine by comparing the use of Pertamax and bioethanol mixtures of fuel with a composition of 25%, 20%, and O% bioethanol. The study used an experimental method where data was collected and then data processing and data analysis were carried out. The results obtained the highest power of 8.70 kW at 25% bioethanol at 6000 rpm, followed by 20% bioethanol and 100% Pertamax at 8.60 rpm with rotations of 6500 rpm and 7000 rpm respectively. The highest torque of 25% bioethanol is 13.80 Nm at 5500 rpm, followed by 3.10 Nm at 5000 rpm at 100% pertamax and 12.80 Nm at 5500 rpm with 20% bioethanol fuel. The lowest fuel consumption is 0.57 kg/kWh at 7000 rpm with 100% pertamax fuel, then 0.60 kg/kWh with 20% bioethanol fuel at 6500 rpm and 0.6 kg/kWh with 15% bioethanol fuel at 6000 rpm

All specimens were subjected to impact angles of 90°, 60° and 45° at constant impact velocity. Three different cell sizes were used for this study in order to observe permanent after-impact maximum deflections. Abstract

Market activities emit pollutants that have deleterious impacts on human health and the environment. This study assessed various sizes of ambient particulate matter (PM) and the distribution of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in deposited particulates within some major marketplaces in Ilorin, Nigeria. Particulates fractions were measured at ten (10) foremost markets (MP1–MP10). PTEs in the deposited particulates were analyzed using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS). The health and ecological risks of PTEs were evaluated for adults and children. The Life Cancer Risk (LCR) for Pb was the most prevalent of the carcinogenic PTEs detected in all the markets studied, with the highest risks at MP1 for adults (3.45E-04) and children (3.22E-03). The LCR values obtained for Pb surpassed the statutory allowable baseline set by USEPA. The Hazard Index (HI) obtained was within the safe limit in most markets except for Pb which recorded HI > 1 at MP1, MP3, MP6, MP7, and MP10 with values of 3.29, 1.10, 1.10, 2.74 and 1.28, respectively for children, indicating unacceptable non-carcinogenic risk. Estimation of Potential Ecological Risk Index (RI) indicated low to moderate threat in the polluted dust of markets with MP4 bringing the highest risk concerning Cd (100) and Cu (70), both contributing 77% of total ecological risks (ERs) of the PTEs.

Abstract

The impact of anthropogenic activities in the airshed of a major Nigerian university community was evaluated in this study. Particulate matter (PM1.0, PM2.5, PM10 and TSP) concentration loads were measured in 20 sampling locations and the measured data was correlated with the prevailing microclimatic parameters using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) techniques. A high concentration of PM was measured in locations where the bulk of vehicular movements, and commercial and students activities were considerably high. The university’s main entrance was another hotspot for particulate matter emission due to the constant influx of vehicles during peak periods. The 8-hr average concentrations for the TSP, PM1.0, PM2.5 and PM10 in all the sample locations were 210.35, 15.45, 25.10, and 137.09 respectively while the 24-hr average concentrations for the TSP, PM1.0, PM2.5, and PM10 in the same locations were 154.65, 11.36, 18.46, and 100.79 respectively. Exposure to high PM rates was significant especially when there is increased pollution due to exhaust and non-exhaust emissions (like brake wear, dust resuspension, and tyre wear).

Abstract

The irrational use of drugs, especially antimicrobials as growth promoters, and in the management of disease conditions without proper diagnosis has led to a higher incidence of multidrug resistance/antimicrobial resistance, which is a leading cause of death both in humans and animals. Improper diagnosis, irrational use of drugs and lack of adherence to withdrawal periods are factors incriminated in the incidence of multidrug resistance pathogens. This study was aimed at examining the prevalence, isolation, and antimicrobial susceptibility profile of Staphylococcus (S.) aureus in marketed milk and cheese in Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria. Using a cross-sectional study design which involved sampling of milk and cheese (n = 340) from four markets (Gambari, Ojaoba, Sango and Ipata) in Ilorin metropolis, Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) was isolated using standard microbiological procedures. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing of all positive isolates was done using the disk diffusion method. The prevalence of S. aureus was 3.5% in nono milk and 0.0% in cheese. The S. aureus isolated showed 100% resistance to ampicillin, ceftazidime and oxacillin and a high resistance rate to cefoxitin (91.7%), ceftriaxone (83.3%) and tetracycline (83.3%). Ciprofloxacin, gentamicin, and azithromycin showed lower resistance (25%) to the tested S. aureus isolates. The S. aureus isolates displayed six different resistance patterns and were resistant to three or more antibiotics. Particularly, three isolates were pan-resistant. This study emphasizes the importance of good management and hygiene practices throughout the milk processing value chain to ensure the quality and safety of the final product for consumers. 32. Corporate activities that influence population health: a scoping review and qualitative synthesis to develop the HEALTH-CORP typology

Abstract

Abstract Introduction The concept of the commercial determinants of health (CDH) is used to study the actions of commercial entities and the political and economic systems, structures, and norms that enable these actions and ultimately influence population health and health inequity. The aim of this study was to develop a typology that describes the diverse set of activities through which commercial entities influence population health and health equity across industries. Methods We conducted a scoping review to identify articles using CDH terms (n = 116) published prior to September 13, 2022 that discuss corporate activities that can influence population health and health equity across 16 industries. We used the qualitative constant comparative method to inductively code descriptions and examples of corporate activities within these articles, arrange the activities into descriptive domains, and generate an overarching typology. Results The resulting Corporate Influences on Population Health (HEALTH-CORP) typology identifies 70 corporate activities that can influence health across industries, which are categorized into seven domains of corporate influence (i.e., political practices, preference and perception shaping practices, corporate social responsibility practices, economic practices, products & services, employment practices, and environmental practices). We present a model that situates these domains based on their proximity to health outcomes and identify five population groups (i.e., consumers, workers, disadvantaged groups, vulnerable groups, and local communities) to consider when evaluating corporate health impacts. Discussion The HEALTH-CORP typology facilitates an understanding of the diverse set of corporate activities that can influence population health and the population groups affected by these activities. We discuss how the HEALTH-CORP model and typology could be used to support the work of policy makers and civil society actors, as well as provide the conceptual infrastructure for future surveillance efforts to monitor corporate practices that affect health across industries. Finally, we discuss two gaps in the CDH literature that we identified based on our findings: the lack of research on environmental and employment practices and a dearth of scholarship dedicated to investigating corporate practices in low- and middle-income countries. We propose potential avenues to address these gaps (e.g., aligning CDH monitoring with other occupational health monitoring initiatives).

Abstract

A company's human resources are a significant asset for business growth. Performance of working employees determines how far a company advances. This study aims to examine the variables that affect employees' productivity at PT Z. This study uses a quantitative, SEM-PLS methodology. A questionnaire with a 1–5 rating scale was given to 56 randomly selected respondents, who provided the data. The software SmartPLS is then used to examine the data that has been gathered. The study's latent variables included employee performance, job happiness, work culture, and work experience. The findings demonstrated that the composite reliability and AVE values were both greater than 0.5 and 0.7, respectively. Everything created for the model, it can be said, has strong discriminant validity. Each item's loading factor value is more than 0.7, indicating that all the variables are legitimate. The job satisfaction variable in the hypothesis test had no impact on worker performance. Employee performance, meanwhile, is influenced by workplace culture and experience.

34. IMPACT OF FADAMA DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS ON POVERTY ALLEVIATION AMONG FARMERS IN KADUNA STATE, NIGERIA

The study assessed the impact of the fadama project on the poverty status of both the beneficiary and non-beneficiary farmers in Kaduna State, Nigeria. Questionnaire was randomly administered among 2,144 respondents in four (4) Local Government Areas (LGAs) namely, Giwa, Birnin Gwari, Kauru and Zango Kataf. Descriptive statistics, gross margin analysis, Foster-Greer-Thorbecke (FGT) model, regression analysis were employed in analyzing the data. The result showed that 72% of the respondents were males and married. More than 82% of the fadama beneficiaries had a positive perception of the program. The fadama beneficiary farmers had a mean income of ₦613,323 and ₦419,643 for the non-fadama beneficiary farmers. It was also disclosed that age, gender, dependency ratio and farming experience had significant relationship with their income, 40% of the fadama beneficiaries were poor, 69% of the non- fadama beneficiary farmers were poor. It was therefore, concluded that fadama program had a significant impact in reducing the poverty status of the beneficiaries. The study recommended that for sustainability, the farmers should be included as the drivers of fadama program with the government and private sector as collaborators. The women should also be helped to form functional cooperatives so that poverty among them can be significantly reduced.

The challenge is ferrous iron toxicity (FIT), wherein adaptive varieties with high yield potential be required to support increased production. The study objectives were to produce tolerant and widely adapted lines of FIT from local parents, to determine the stability of the lines in various environments and seasons in FIT rice fields, and to determine the response of rice lines to salt application. Two local Fe-tolerant parents that is Cekau and Karya, were used as females to produce lines that were tested for FIT. High-yielding lines and early maturity were selected to represent tolerant, quite tolerant, and moderate to FIT. The research was designed according to a randomized complete block design with 3 replications. Most of the local cultivar descent were resistant to FIT and stable at various locations and seasons. There was an interaction between the lines and the environment in the multilocation test, but in the high-Fe field test, there was no interaction between the lines and the season. Sensitive lines gave higher yields in the dry season than in the rainy season, but the tolerant lines are not affected by the seasons. The long dry season followed by high rainfall caused the accumulation of Fe on the soil surface to increase followed by a decrease in yields of moderate and sensitive lines. The addition of 200 kg ha-1 of salt increased the productivity of tolerant, quite tolerant, and moderate lines by improving root quality.

Abstract

This study aims to design and fabricate a prototype of massage chair made of corrugated cardboard materials and evaluate its structural strength. It could be a pioneering study as no one had manifested or discussed it before. The prototype is currently made with dimensions of approximately 60 ´ 50 ´ 100 cm, consisting of 6 cardboard components, affords a reflexology sensation from solid rubber balls, and provides reclinable features at the backrest and footrest. The most prominent benefit of this cardboard massage chair compared to the commercialized ones is environmentally friendly and lightweight products. Moreover, the constructed component can be disassembled and folded, making it a portable massage chair. From the strength evaluation, the cardboard massage chair can still endure a load of 50 kg to the prototype’s seat, backrest, and footrest. However, multi loading directions (e.g., vertical, longitudinal, lateral), stress concentration, and fluctuating person weight would generate tremendous stress and lead to a more substantial possibility of damage and failures on the cardboard after several testing cycles. Therefore, further improvement processes should be investigated to develop an optimized version of cardboard massage chair in the future.

Abstract

The piping system is a fundamental process equipment in the industry. The phenomena that occur in piping systems vary depending on the conditions of the pipes and the fluids flowing through them. Therefore, research related to piping systems requires attention to minimize and understand the occurring phenomena. There have been many studies related to piping analysis, but what sets this research apart from previous studies is that it focuses on examining the contribution of each component of the piping system to friction loss-pressure drop. Furthermore, the data obtained is used to determine the deviation or difference between experimental data and theoretical calculations. This research aims to study the correlation between friction loss and pressure drop in piping systems (including pipes, elbows, and tees) and to determine the extent of deviation between theoretical calculations and actual conditions, as well as to understand the trend of such deviations. Results show that as the length of the pipe increases, there is an increase in pressure drop, especially for pipe lengths of 0.6, 0.8, and 1.4 meters, the values are 275.26, 367.0, and 642.27 Pa over density, respectively. Conversely, as the pipe diameter increases, the resulting pressure drop becomes smaller, namely for pipe diameters of 0.5, 0.75, and 1.25 inches, the values are 266.64, 93.33, and 13.33 Pa over density, respectively. In the observation of the influence of fittings, it is shown that the pressure drop generated by elbows is greater than that of tees, with values of 26.66 and 13.33 Pa over density, respectively. When calculating the percentage deviation, there is a tendency for longer pipes and larger diameters will increase the percentage of deviation. For pipe lengths of 0.4, 0.6, and 1.4 meters, the percentage deviations are 3.23, 10.11, and 17.50%, respectively. For variations in pipe diameter, the percentage deviations are 3.23, 41.74, and 47.15% for diameters of 0.5, 0.75, and 1.25 inches, respectively. Meanwhile, the percentage deviation for tees is greater than that of elbows, with values of 84.78% (for elbows) and 185.02% (for tees).

Abstract: This study analyses the social, intellectual, and political history of Dewan Syariah Kota Surakarta (DSKS, The Surakarta Sharia Council), the group that is a forum for many smaller Islamist groups in Solo. This group claimed to unite Muslims in Solo, Central Java. Formed in 2013, this group suddenly organized many mass rallies with negative campaigns and radical notions. This study investigates the factors that contributed to the emergence of the DSKS by integrating both theoretical and empirical approaches. The data for these investigations are gathered through a literature review and on-site research. The literature review is complemented by examining documents and media, especially online sources. One of the most significant is the materials published by DSKS, encompassing website articles, pamphlets, and content on social media platforms. Many factors contributed to the emergence. First, many Islamist figures in Solo such as Abu Bakar Baasyir, Muinudinillah Basri, Tengku Azhar, and Syihabuddin Abdul Muiz. Second, the role and support of Majelis Ulama Indonesia (MUI). Third, the existence of various Salafi movements. Last, Solo is a city that is closely linked to terrorist activities. This study makes an important contribution to the literature on social movements, particularly in the context of Islamic movements in Indonesia. Abstract

Minoris music is a musical composition created as a means of conveying messages to viewers who see a public service advertisement video with the title narcotics video. Minoris music is music that aims to make the audience feel the message that the narcotics video wants to convey. Minoris' music is an accompaniment to a socialisation video with a narcotics theme that is socialisation in nature. This socialisation is more specifically targeted at the world of education from elementary, middle, high school, to university levels. In the application of a method, the research used is, using a qualitative way The use of research in a qualitative way is a research concept that aims as a process of understanding the subjects to be obtained from research. For example behaviour, motivation, action and perception. The method is carried out thoroughly and uses the description method, in determining the right words and language according to the natural context. In revealing the context aspect in the application of the analysis of Minoris Music, the author uses the basis of the analysis of Music Cultures of The Pacific, The Near East and Asia, which includes aspects of time, and also the theory of tone, tempo as a reference that minoris music is able to play emotions in the socialisation video of public service advertisements. The result of the research is that minoris music can bring emotions in the public service advertisement video of the Riau Islands Provincial Prosecutor’s Office using DAW Studio One. In its application is the application of Tempo and Minor Basic Tone used in the manufacturing process. In its application, the author will only analyse the musical relationships that cause influence in the aspect of Minoris music in the application of the Socialisation Video with the theme of narcotics.

Abstract

African trypanosomosis remains one of the major diseases affecting food security and human healthy living in sub-Saharan Africa. This study screened domesticated animals for the presence of pathogenic trypanosomes in 1,050 slaughtered animals comprising 858 and 100 cattle respectively from Zango and Kawo abattoirs and 92 camels from Zango as Kawo abattoir neither slaughters nor sell camel meat. Both abattoirs are government-owned and located in Kaduna metropolis, Kaduna State, Nigeria. The animals examined were sourced from Bauchi, Yobe, Katsina, Kaduna, Kano, and Chad Republic. Blood samples were collected from each animal at the point of slaughter and examined using the buffy coat technique and Leishman-stained thick film for trypanosome identification. Packed cell volume (PCV) determination was conducted to assess the level of anaemia. Results indicated that 25 cattle and 2 camels (27) had an overall trypanosome infection rate of 2.57%. The trypanosomes observed were mainly Trypanosoma brucei, Trypanosoma congolense, and Trypanosoma vivax. This study showed that sources of livestock slaughtered at various abattoirs can be a useful indicator in quantifying trypanosomosis risk. Continuous sensitization and awareness creation among the herders at the grass-root level is recommended for effective disease management towards increased livestock production and productivity required to sustain the rural economy and improve the livelihoods of the local populace. 47. Urban Crime Incidence and Prevention Mechanisms in Kano Municipal Area Council

Abstract

This paper established the relationship between crime incidence and residential neighbourhood attributes towards improving safety and security in Kano Municipal Local Government Area (KMLGA). Records of crime incidences for 2017-2018 were collected from Kano Police Commission for the study together with stratified sampling of 382 heads of households as respondents in the study area housing 13 wards in the growing metropolis of Kano. Descriptive and inferential statistics were employed to analyse the data obtained that revealed assault crime as the most prevalent (32%) followed by theft (16.6%), and drug related crimes (15.3%). The neighbourhoods most prone to crime is Sharada (19.8%), Tudun Wazirchi (9.2%) and Sheshe (8.5%); while Zaitawa is the least with only 5.5% of recorded crime in the burgeoning city. Multiple regression results for sexual offence and crimes revealed that poor lighting has the strongest Coefficient of determination (0.468) followed by dead-end-streets (0.422), and hence the strongest unique predictors that explain sexual crimes in the study area. Findings from multiple regression analysis for assault crime revealed that vacant lot/building has the strongest coefficient of determination of 0.140 and for theft crime, dead-ends-street has the strongest (0.360) as unique predictors that explained assault and theft crimes when the variance explained by other predictors in the model was controlled. It is therefore recommended that there should be improvement programmes such as the provision for street lighting, pathway expansions, efficient waste removal, routine maintenance and repair of street lighting equipment in areas of high crime. The city should avoid the abandonment of large building structures like the industrial estates of Sharada – having highest crime rate. These measures can also assist in the fight against the growing trend of urban crime in this most populous metropolis in the savannah regions of sub-Saharan Africa.

Abstract

Background The Global Influenza Hospital Surveillance Network (GIHSN) aims to determine the burden of severe influenza disease and Influenza Vaccine Effectiveness (IVE). This is a prospective, active surveillance and hospital-based epidemiological study to collect epidemiological data in the GIHSN. In the 2016–2017 influenza season, 15 sites in 14 countries participated in the GIHSN, although the analyses could not be performed in 2 sites. A common core protocol was used in order to make results comparable. Here we present the results of the GIHSN 2016–2017 influenza season. Methods A RT-PCR test was performed to all patients that accomplished the requirements detailed on a common core protocol. Patients admitted were included in the study after signing the informed consent, if they were residents, not institutionalised, not discharged in the previous 30 days from other hospitalisation with symptoms onset within the 7 days prior to admission. Patients 5 years old or more must also complied the Influenza-Like Illness definition. A test negative-design was implemented to perform IVE analysis. IVE was estimated using a logistic regression model, with the formula IVE = (1-aOR) × 100, where aOR is the adjusted Odds Ratio comparing cases and controls. Results Among 21,967 screened patients, 10,140 (46.16%) were included, as they accomplished the inclusion criteria, and tested, and therefore 11,827 (53.84%) patients were excluded. Around 60% of all patients included with laboratory results were recruited at 3 sites. The predominant strain was A(H3N2), detected in 63.6% of the cases (1840 patients), followed by B/Victoria, in 21.3% of the cases (618 patients). There were 2895 influenza positive patients (28.6% of the included patients). A(H1N1)pdm09 strain was mainly found in Mexico. IVE could only be performed in 6 sites separately. Overall IVE was 27.24 (95% CI 15.62–37.27. Vaccination seemed to confer better protection against influenza B and in people 2–4 years, or 85 years old or older. The aOR for hospitalized and testing positive for influenza was 3.02 (95% CI 1.59–5.76) comparing pregnant with non-pregnant women. Conclusions Vaccination prevented around 1 in 4 hospitalisations with influenza. Sparse numbers didn’t allow estimating IVE in all sites separately. Pregnancy was found a risk factor for influenza, having 3 times more risk of being admitted with influenza for pregnant women.
