A β-FeOOH nanorod was investigated as a highly active and durable self-repairing anode catalyst for alkaline water electrolysis with repeated potential change, simulating power from renewable energy. The β-FeOOH nanorod was synthesized by coprecipitation, using an organic buffer of tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane. The β-FeOOH nanorods dispersed in 1 M KOH aq. as an alkaline electrolyte were electrochemically deposited on a nickel electrode by a constant current electrolysis. The deposited β-FeOOH nanorods formed bundled network on the surface of the electrode and exhibited high oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity, where the minimum OER overpotential was 285 mV at 100 mA cm–2. The durability of the nickel electrode coated with β-FeOOH nanorods were tested via shutdown-based accelerated durability test, where electrolysis at 600 mA cm–2 for 1 min and the potential control at 0.5 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) for 1 min are repeated in the presence of β-FeOOH nanorod in the electrolyte. The catalyst coated electrode showed the low OER overpotential for 4000 cycles, whereas the OER overpotential of a bare nickel electrode increased within only 200 cycles. The β-FeOOH nanorod efficiently suppressed the corrosion of the nickel substrate and the layer of β-FeOOH nanorod was continuously repaired by accumulating the β-FeOOH nanorod from the electrolyte. Therefore, the β-FeOOH nanorod is useful as a self-repairing anode catalyst with high OER activity and durability.

Miniaturization of semiconductor devices has made structures more fragile, leading to potential collapses due to capillary forces during drying after wet cleaning. This has hampered the integration of transistors according to Moore's law. We have developed a method for preparing nanopillars in a liquid cell and have successfully observed their collapse by means of a crosssectional view in transmission electron microscopy. The dynamics of collapse as a result of capillary interactions involve two steps. First, the nanopillars collapse due to an imbalance in capillary forces caused by a difference in liquid levels at the gas-liquid interface. Second, a liquid pool formed between nanopillars maintains the collapsed state of the nanopillars through surface tension. The nanopillars recover on reimmersion in the liquid after the collapse. This method is effective, and is expected to contribute to the continued development of miniaturization and three-dimensionality of semiconductors.

The infrared (IR) spectra of alkali and alkaline earth metal ion complexes with the Ac-Tyr-NHMe (GYG) peptide have been measured by laser photodissociation in a cold ion trap coupled with an electrospray mass spectrometer. The GYG peptide corresponds to a portion of the ion selectivity filter in the KcsA K+ channel that allows K+ to pass, but blocks Na+ even though it has a smaller ionic radius than K+ . This current study extends a previous investigation on Na+ and K+ to the entire set of alkali metaI ions and alkaline earth dications. IR-IR hole-burning (IR2 dip) spectroscopy has established the coexistence of several conformers of the GYG-metal ion complexes. The structures of the conformers were assigned by comparison between the isomer-selected IR spectra and theoretical IR spectra obtained from quantum chemical calculations. It was found that the structure of the dominant conformer correlates with the ability of the ion to permeate through the K+ channel.

This study investigated the effect of land-use and management change (LUMC) on carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) dynamics after 15–40 years. LUMC constituted change from rice paddies to chestnut orchard, wetland, and buckwheat upland fields in Shonai region, Yamagata Prefecture, Northeast Japan. Soil samples were collected from the top – (0–15 cm) and sub-layers (15–30 cm) for analysis of soil organic C (SOC) and its δ13C value, total N (TN), and their stocks. C decomposition (Dec-C) and net N mineralization (Net Min-N) were determined according to the production of CO2 and NH4+ + NO3– by aerobic incubation and CO2 + CH4 and NH4+ by anaerobic incubation, respectively. The results reveal that 40 years after change from rice paddy to orchard and wetland, the SOC and TN contents in the top-layer were not significantly altered. However, in buckwheat upland fields and in the parking area where vegetation was absent, the SOC content decreased significantly. Conversion of rice paddies to amur silver grass wetland altered the soil δ13C the most, leading to an increase of 5.1‰ and 2.9‰ for the top – and sub-layers, respectively. In general, the incubation experiment results revealed that a change to orchard and wetland did not significantly decrease the Dec-C and Net Min-N. Whereas, the change from rice paddies to parking area significantly decreased the Dec-C and Net Min-N in both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. We conclude that LUMC over decades had various effects on the SOC and TN contents and stocks as well as their mineralization potentials.

Background Aggressive resection of recurrent glioblastoma has been reported to prolong survival and should be considered for resectable recurrences. In recent years, expanded resection for primary glioblastoma, especially removal of the FLAIR hyperintensity region beyond the contrast-enhancing lesion (FLAIRectomy; FR), has been reported, but there are no reports of FR for recurrent glioblastomas. In this study, we examined the efficacy and safety of FR for recurrent glioblastoma. Methods Recurrent glioblastoma operated on at our institution from January 2014 to July 2022 were included. The extent of resection (EOR) of contrast-enhancing lesions and FLAIR hyperintensity lesion was measured. Progression-free survival (PFS), overall survival (OS), surgical morbidity, KPS, and MMSE were analyzed retrospectively. Removal of at least 20% of the FLAIR hyperintensity lesion was defined as FR. Results Thirty-five surgeries in 28 patients (age at surgery 15-81 years; median 54 years, male 20/female 15) were included. The EOR of the contrast-enhancing lesion was 96.6± 7.4%, with GTR in 28 cases and non-GTR in 7. The EOR of the lesion with FLAIR hyperintensity was 33.2±36.5% and FR was achieved in 15 cases (42.9%). The median preoperative KPS was 90 (50-100; mean 83.3 ) in the FR group and 80 (60-100; mean 81) in the non-FR group. Both PFS and OS from surgery at recurrence were significantly prolonged in the FR group (median PFS; 8.1 months vs. 4.6 months, p=0.032, median OS; 36.1 months vs. 15.9 months, p=0.009); there was no difference in PFS or OS between the GTR and non-GTR groups (p=0.33, 0.79). There were significantly fewer patients in the FR group having a decrease in KPS of 20 or more at 30/90 days postoperatively (p=0.037, 0.020). Conclusion In our retrospective analysis, FR prolongs PFS and OS without decreasing KPS for resectable recurrent glioblastoma. Further validation in prospective studies is warranted.

Purpose Occupational exposure to antineoplastic drugs in hospital settings is recognized to be hazardous, and as such environmental decontamination including degradation and inactivation of such drugs is recommended. To data, although various agents such as oxidants have been reported to be useful for decontamination, simpler, safer, and more convenient methods are required. In this study, the degradation and inactivation efficacy of ozone water, which has newly been introduced for decontamination of antineoplastic drugs in spills, was investigated for formulations of gemcitabine, irinotecan, and paclitaxel. Methods Antineoplastic formulations (medicinal ingredient: ∼1.5 μmol) were mixed with 50 mL of ozone water (>4 mg/L). The reactions were monitored by high-performance liquid chromatography, and the degradation mixtures were analyzed by 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy in order to obtain the structural information of the degradation products. The formulations of gemcitabine and irinotecan and those degradation mixtures were evaluated for their mutagenicity using the Ames test and cytotoxicity against human cancer cells. Results gemcitabine and irinotecan were found to be readily degraded by the ozone treatment, and their active sites were suggested to be degraded. In contrast, paclitaxel was hard to be decomposed, possibly owing to the consumption of ozone by the polyoxyethylene castor oil added as a pharmaceutical additive of the formulation. No significant mutagenic changes of Salmonella typhimurium strains used for the Ames test were observed for the samples within the concentration ranges examined. The ozone treatment showed obvious increases in cell viability for gemcitabine formulation, and mild increases for irinotecan formulation. Conclusions Ozone water was shown to be effective as a decomposition agent for the antineoplastic drug formulations examined, although the efficacy depends on the chemical structures of the drugs and the pharmaceutical additives. It was also suggested that ozone treatment has a tendency to decrease the toxicity of the antineoplastic drug formulations. As such, further studies are required in order to clarify the effects and application limitations of ozone water.

Manipulation of magnetic moments through spin transport is determined by the effective spin mixing conductance g eff ↑↓ in the ferromagnetic metal/heavy metal heterostructure. Magnetization dynamics detection and evaluation of the Gilbert damping constant α is usually employed to estimate g eff ↑↓. An all-optical pump-probe method is a powerful method for investigating α with high accuracy because an extrinsic contribution on α can be suppressed at a high precession frequency with an increasing external magnetic field. A large voltage signal was recently observed in half-metallic Heusler alloy Co2MnSi thin film due to spin current injection; however, that voltage signal may also include contributions from thermal effect and spin Hall angle in the heavy metal layer. In this study, a large enhancement of α was observed in Co2MnSi/Pt heterostructure by using the all-optical method. g eff ↑↓ for Co2MnSi/Pt was 2 times larger than that for Fe/Pt. This large g eff ↑↓ is promising for spintronic device applications.

BACKGROUND In the updated 2021 WHO classification, diffuse gliomas were strictly reclassified by molecular statuses. In glioblastoma (GBM), the prognostic significance of the resection has been shown, but the excision rate to be achieved in the new classification has not been defined. Moreover, the correlation between the extent of resection (EOR) and the prognosis is still controversial for other gliomas. METHODS IDH 1/2 mutations and TERT promoter mutations were analyzed by Sanger sequencing, 1p/19q co-deletion by microsatellite or MLPA, and EGFR amplification and CDKN2A deletions by MLPA. The correlation between the resection rate and prognosis of each tumor type in the 2021/2016 WHO classification was analyzed retrospectively. RESULTS According to the 2021 classification, 293 patients with GBM, IDH-wild type, 68 with astrocytoma, IDH-mutant (2/3/4 22/26/20), and 58 with oligodendroglioma, IDH-mutant and 1p/19q co-deleted were identified. Based on the 2016 classification, they were diagnosed as 314 GBM, 106 astrocytoma (Gd II/III 37/69), and 59 oligodendroglioma. For GBM, IDH-wild type (2021 classification), a prolonged OS benefit was observed with >25% removal (p=0.042), whereas, more than 20% of tumor removal for patients with GBM (2016 classification) resulted in OS prolongation. EOR was a significant favorable prognostic factor for grade II/III astrocytoma by the 2016 classification, but not for astrocytoma, IDH-mutant (grade 2/3) in the 2021 classification. When analyzed only in patients with astrocytoma, IDH-mutant by the 2021 classification, EOR was not significantly prognostic, suggesting that poorer prognosis of patients with unresectable IDH-wild type astrocytomas (2016 classification) might have a negative impact on the outcome. CONCLUSION There was a strong correlation between EOR and prognosis in patients with GBM, and >25% removal was considered significant according to the 2021 classification. For astrocytoma in the 2021 classification, EOR did not show a prognostic significance, but further validation including grading effect is warranted.

The use of renewable energy as a primary energy source is urged because of the rapid progress of global warming. Because the renewable energy is unevenly distributed in terms of place and time, the production of hydrogen from renewable energy is crucial. Alkaline water electrolysis is a cost-effective technology for this purpose, though the degradation of electrodes under fluctuating power of renewable energy is recently regarded as a crucial problem. We have recently reported that a in-situ repair of anode catalyst (self-repairing catalyst), supplying fresh catalyst from electrolyte is quite useful to improve the lifetime under unsteady operation [1]. A hybrid cobalt hydroxide nanosheet (Co-ns) was used as the self-repairing catalyst, whereas its electrocatalytic activity is moderate. In this study, we demonstrate the use of β-FeOOH nanorods (β-FeOOH-nr) as a highly active and durable self-repairing catalyst. Because β-FeOOH-nr consists of iron as a metallic element, it is promising for its low cost and resource abundance. β-FeOOH-nr was synthesized by the coprecipitation of Fe3+ with tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane, followed by heating at 80 °C. The width and length of β-FeOOH-nr were 3–6 nm and 4–200 nm, respectively. The Fe K-edge XANES analysis showed that β-FeOOH-nr consists of Fe3+ species. Electrochemical tests were performed in a three-electrode PFA cell, using a nickel wire, a nickel coil, and a reversible hydrogen electrode, as working, counter, and reference electrodes, respectively. The β-FeOOH-nr was dispersed in 1 M KOH as an electrolyte. β-FeOOH-nr was first deposited on the nickel wire electrode by constant current electrolysis at 1 A·cm–2 for 240 min (30 min × 8 cycles). β-FeOOH-nr formed a thin layer of bundled nanorods and exhibited the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) overpotential of 320 mV at 100 mA cm–2, while previously reported Co-ns exhibited 342 mV. In addition, the activation of β-FeOOH-nr-coated electrode is almost finished at the first 30 min of the electrolysis, whereas Co-ns required 240 min for the activation. Because β-FeOOH-nr-coated electrode exhibited high OER activity with a small amount of β-FeOOH-nr deposited on the electrode, β-FeOOH-nr could activate electrode with shorted electrolysis time. The β-FeOOH-nr-coated electrode indicated the redox peak due to Ni2+/Ni3+ at 1.44 V vs. RHE which is at higher potential than that of a bare nickel electrode, implying that β-FeOOH-nr formed composite with active nickel species, such as Ni(OH)2 as highly active materials. The durability of the catalyst-coated electrode was examined in the presence of β-FeOOH-nr in the electrolyte by the newly reported shutdown-based accelerated durability test (SD-ADT) [2]. SD-ADT consists of multiple cycles of constant current electrolysis at 600 mA·cm–2 for 1 min and potential retainment at low potential of 0.5 V vs. RHE for 1 min. A bare nickel electrode is degraded only within 50 cycles by the SD-ADT (OER overpotential reached 640 mV at the 200th cycle), whereas β-FeOOH-nr-coated nickel electrode retained its low OER overpotential of 285 mV in at least 4000 cycles. Comparing with the SD-ADT in the absence of β-FeOOH-nr in the electrolyte, it was shown that β-FeOOH-nr was deposited during the SD-ADT to repair degraded electrode. In conclusion, β-FeOOH-nr was shown to be a useful anode catalyst for alkaline water electrolysis powered by fluctuating renewable energy. By dispersing β-FeOOH-nr in an electrolyte, the alkaline water electrolyzer can establish self-repairing system with very long lifetime under frequent potential change. Introduction and importance Hereby we describe an instructive patient with cerebellar infarction and a growing aneurysm at the posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA), which was not a true cause of infarction. Case presentation A 50-year-old female presented with dizziness and posterior neck pain at our hospital (Mitaka city, Tokyo, Japan). Diffusion weighted magnetic resonance (MR) images showed cerebellar infarction in the left PICA territory and MR angiography study showed an aneurysm at the origin of the left PICA, which grew in 2 weeks. Since we considered cerebellar infarction was caused by thrombosis from the aneurysm, trapping of the PICA and occipital artery-PICA bypass was performed to prevent recurrent cerebellar infarction and rupture of the aneurysm by neurosurgeons. During the operation, dissection was observed at the distal PICA, which was diagnosed to be the true cause of cerebellar infarction. By the follow-up for 12 months at an outpatient, there was no recurrence of cerebral infarction. Clinical discussion A specimen of the artery showing the findings of dissection was not obtained, and the pathological diagnosis could not be made. It would be controversial whether a surgical procedure presented here was the most optimal. Conclusion This is a first reported case of growing aneurysms and cerebral infarction due to arterial dissection. Even if cerebral infarction is accompanied by growing aneurysms, arterial dissection should be included in the differential diagnoses of a cause of infarction. Posterior cervical pain can be a clue for early appropriate diagnosis in such a case., Highlights • A patient with a growing aneurysm suffered from brain infarction with undiagnosed dissection. • Even if an aneurysm grows, arterial dissection can be a true cause of infarction. • Cervical pain can be a clue for diagnosing cause of infarction in such a case.

In a heterogeneous computing system, different kinds of processors might need to be involved in the execution of a file I/O operation. Since NEC SX-Aurora TSUBASA is one such system, two I/O acceleration mechanisms are offered to reduce the data transfer overheads among the processors for a file I/O operation. This paper first investigates the effects of the two mechanisms on the I/O performance of SX-Aurora TSUBASA. Considering the results, proper use of the two mechanisms is discussed via a real-world application of flood damage estimation. These results clearly demonstrate the demand for auto-tuning, i.e., adaptively selecting either of the two mechanisms with considering application behaviors and system configuration.

In this paper, we present a novel pedestrian detection system for sidewalk snow removing vehicles particularly for night driving scenarios. The information in front of the snowplow is obtained by clustering and classifying objects using LiDAR point clouds. A robust pedestrian detection and classification algorithm using the support vector machine(SVM) is proposed. We tested the system on an actual machine and the accuracy our method is verified by experiments.

THz-spectroscopy is an attractive imaging tool for scientific research, especially in life science, offering non-destructive interaction with matter due to its low photon energies. However, wavelengths above $100{\mu}m$ principally limit its spatial resolution in the far-field by diffraction to this regime, making it not sufficient to image biological cells in the micrometer scale. Therefore, super-resolution imaging techniques are required to overcome this restriction. Near-field-imaging using spintronic emitters offers the most feasible approach because of its simplicity and potential for wide-ranging applications. In our study, we investigate THz-radiation generated by fs-laser-pulses in CoFeB/Pt heterostructures, based on spin currents, detected by commercial LT-GaAs Auston switches. The spatial resolution is evaluated applying a 2D scanning technique with motorized stages allowing scanning steps in the sub-micrometer range. By applying near-field imaging we can increase the spatial resolution to the dimensions of the laser spot size in the micrometer scale. For this purpose, the spintronic emitter is directly evaporated on a gold test pattern separated by a 300 nm spacer layer. Moving these structures with respect to the femtosecond laser spot which generates the THz radiation allows for resolution determination using the knife-edge method. We observe a full-width half-maximum THz beam diameter of $4.9(4){\mu}$m at 1 THz. The possibility to deposit spintronic emitter heterostructures on simple glass substrates makes them an interesting candidate for near-field imaging for a large number of applications., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

The antiferromagnetic order can mediate a transmission of the spin angular momentum flow, or the spin current, in the form of propagating magnons. In this work, we perform laser stimulated THz emission measurements on Pt/CoO/FeCoB multilayers to investigate the spin current transmission through CoO, an antiferromagnetic insulator, on a picosecond timescale. The results reveal a spin current transmission through CoO with the diffusion length of 3.0 nm. In addition, rotation of the polarization of the emitted THz radiation was observed, suggesting an interaction between the propagating THz magnons and the Neel vector in CoO. Our results not only demonstrate the picosecond magnon spin current transmission but also the picosecond interaction of the THz magnons with the Neel vector in the antiferromagnet.
