Review question: What is the role of social determinants of health on the effectiveness, facilitators and barriers of interventions or programs designed to optimize the cascade of care among undocumented migrants with non-communicable diseases? Search strategy: This scoping review will include scientific research literature and health policies. The latter refers to decisions, usually develop by policy makers pertaining to the health care system. The search for scientific research sources will be conducted in the following databases: Medline, Embase, and Web of Science. Grey literature search will be undertaken using Google Scholar, we will limit our search to the first 100 hits. We will search for health policies using health policy observatories, and migration intergovernmental organizations. All included electronic databases will be searched from 2000 to 2022 with no country restriction. We will include studies published in English, Spanish, or French.

Subjective assessments of well-being are becoming routine indicators, considering that material resources are insufficient to capture people’s satisfaction with life. Examining the unique situation of undocumented migrant workers, driven by aspirations for a better life but constrained by their limited rights in the country of destination, we assess their satisfaction with life and the factors that matter in their evaluations. Data were collected in Geneva (Switzerland), in a study comparing those who have just received a residency permit or about to obtaining it after submitting a regularization request (n = 195) with those who were still undocumented and/or had not submitted a regularization request at the time of our study (n = 231). In addition, comparisons were made with a sample of regular local residents (n = 175). Data obtained through standardized questionnaires include a range of material and non-material determinants, some unique to migrants and others common to the three populations. Satisfaction with life is significantly lower among undocumented migrant workers while those who are regularized and regular local residents report similar levels of well-being. Social participation, self-reported health and discrimination are associated to satisfaction with life among undocumented migrant workers. Among those being regularized, having been longer in the country of destination is associated with lower well-being. Among regular local residents, the only significant factor for a better satisfaction with life is having a partner. Material determinants, while distributed in vastly different levels, do not influence satisfaction with life. Despite the high satisfaction expressed by those who have recently been regularized, policy intervention still have to pay attention to their persisting difficult socioeconomic circumstances amidst a context of overall affluence.

We present an experimental and theoretical study which compares the phonon anomalies and the electronic gap features in the infrared response of the weakly coupled two-leg-ladders in Sr 14 − x Ca x Cu24O41 (SCCO) with those of the underdoped high-T c superconductor YBa2Cu3O 6 + x (YBCO) and thereby reveals some surprising analogies. Specifically, we present a phenomenological model that describes the anomalous doping- and temperature-dependence of some of the phonon features in the a-axis response (field along the rungs of the ladders) of SCCO. It assumes that the phonons are coupled to charge oscillations within the ladders. Their changes with decreasing temperature reveal the formation of a crystal (density wave) of hole pairs that are oriented along the rungs. We also discuss the analogy to a similar model that was previously used to explain the phonon anomalies and an electronic plasma mode in the c-axis response (field perpendicular to the CuO2 planes) of YBCO. We further confirm that an insulator-like pseudogap develops in the a-axis conductivity of SCCO which closely resembles that in the c-axis conductivity of YBCO. Most surprisingly, we find that the c-axis conductivity (field along the legs of the ladders) of SCCO is strikingly similar to the in-plane one (field parallel to the CuO2 planes) of YBCO. Notably, in both cases a dip feature develops in the normal state spectra that is connected with a spectral weight shift toward low frequencies and can thus be associated with precursor superconducting pairing correlations that are lacking macroscopic phase coherence. This SCCO–YBCO analogy indicates that collective degrees of freedom contribute to the low-energy response of underdoped high T c cuprates and it even suggests that the charges in the CuO2 planes tend to segregate forming quasi-one-dimensional structures similar to the two-leg ladders, as predicted for the stripe-scenario or certain intertwinned states.

International audience; OBJECTIVE: Terminal 6q deletion is a rare genetic condition associated with a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by intellectual disability and structural brain anomalies. Interestingly, a similar phenotype is observed in patients harboring pathogenic variants in the DLL1 gene. Our study aimed to further characterize the prenatal phenotype of this syndrome as well as to attempt to establish phenotype-genotype correlations. METHOD: We collected ultrasound findings from 22 fetuses diagnosed with a pure 6qter deletion. We reviewed the literature and compared our 22 cases with 14 fetuses previously reported as well as with patients with heterozygous DLL1 pathogenic variants. RESULTS: Brain structural alterations were observed in all fetuses. The most common findings (>70%) were cerebellar hypoplasia, ventriculomegaly, and corpus callosum abnormalities. Gyration abnormalities were observed in 46% of cases. Occasional findings included cerebral heterotopia, aqueductal stenosis, vertebral malformations, dysmorphic features, and kidney abnormalities. CONCLUSION: This is the first series of fetuses diagnosed with pure terminal 6q deletion. Based on our findings, we emphasize the prenatal sonographic anomalies, which may suggest the syndrome. Furthermore, this study highlights the importance of chromosomal microarray analysis to search for submicroscopic deletions of the 6q27 region involving the DLL1 gene in fetuses with these malformations.

Forgoing healthcare for economic reasons has been previously associated with adverse health outcomes, including a higher risk of hospitalization, a lower quality of life, and worse self-reported health. However, the exact cause-to-effect relation between forgoing healthcare and health-related outcomes has been insufficiently described. Here, we investigate the prospective health consequences of forgoing healthcare for economic reasons using data from “ReBus” (N = 400), a prospective study examining the health consequences of forgoing healthcare (Baseline: 2008–2013, Follow-up: 2014–2016). Using regression models, we explored the baseline determinants of forgoing healthcare, including socioeconomic, demographic, and pre-existing health-risk factors, and examined the associations between forgoing healthcare at baseline and health deterioration at follow-up, using highly pertinent biomarkers (glucose, glycated hemoglobin, lipids, blood pressure) and SF-36 questionnaire data. Low income, low occupation, low education, and smoking were associated with higher odds of forgoing healthcare at baseline. Forgoing healthcare for economic reasons at baseline was subsequently related to detrimental changes in glucose, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL), and blood pressure (BP) at follow-up, independently of baseline socioeconomic factors (Glucose-β = 0.19, 95%CI[0.03;0.34], HDL-β = -0.07, 95%CI[-0.14;0.01], BP-β = 3.30, 95%CI[-0.01;6.60]). Moreover, we found strong associations between forgoing healthcare and adverse SF-36 health scores at follow-up, with individuals forgoing healthcare systematically displaying worse health scores (6%–11% lower scores). For the first time, we show that forgoing healthcare for economic reasons predicts adverse health-related consequences 2–8 years later. Our findings shall further encourage the implementation of public health measures aimed at identifying individuals who forgo healthcare and preventing the adverse health consequences of unmet medical needs.

Supplemental Digital Content is available in the text., OBJECTIVES: Venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation has been largely used in patients with refractory acute respiratory distress syndrome due to coronavirus disease 2019. Few data on long-term pulmonary function among venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation survivors are available. DESIGN: Retrospective, observational cohort. SETTING: Two mixed medical-surgical tertiary (30 beds) and secondary (22 beds) ICUs. PATIENTS: All critically ill adult coronavirus disease 2019 survivors treated with venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation between March 10, and April 30, 2020. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: The last available lung function and 6-minute walking tests, performed after a median of 178 days (ranges, 72–232 d) from ICU admission, were analyzed. Among the 32 coronavirus disease 2019 patients treated by venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation during the study period, 11 (34%; median age 56 yr; median duration of mechanical ventilation and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation therapy of 26 and 15 d, respectively) were successfully weaned and discharged home. Spirometry was performed in nine patients; the volumetric lung function was preserved, that is, median forced vital capacity was 83% of predicted value (51–99% of predicted value), and median forced expiratory volume in 1 second was 82% of predicted value (60–99% of predicted value). Also, the median residual volume and the lung capacity were 100% of predicted value (50–140% of predicted value) and 90% of predicted value (50–100% of predicted value); only the diffusion capacity of the lung for carbon monoxide and 6-minute walking test were decreased (58% of predicted value [37–95% of predicted value] and 468 meters (365–625 meters), corresponding to [63–90% of predicted value], respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Among survivors from severe coronavirus disease 2019 pneumonia treated with venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, preserved long-term volumetric lung function with decreased diffusion capacity of lung carbon monoxide was observed.

OBJECTIVES: Our objectives were to estimate apparent intake of iron in Haiti, to assess the adequacy of iron intake among women of reproductive age (WRA), and to model the cost-effectiveness of fortifying alternative food vehicles for reducing inadequate intake. METHODS: We analyzed the most recent Haiti household food consumption data (2012 ECVMAS) to estimate adequacy of apparent iron intake from dietary sources (using the adult male equivalent method; assuming 10% absorption) and modeled the impacts of fortifying currently mandated (wheat flour, applying local data on current compliance) and hypothetical (bouillon and rice) food vehicles on reductions in the prevalence of inadequate iron intake (effective coverage). We built activity-based cost models to estimate large scale food fortification (LSFF) program establishment and management costs, based on key informant interviews and on published cost estimates from other settings adapted to fit the Haitian case. RESULTS: The prevalence of inadequate dietary intake of iron among WRA was 79% (100% among pregnant women). Iron-fortified wheat flour was the most cost-effective vehicle: $4.32 and $4.75 per WRA-year effectively covered at current (75% of flour fortified to the standard of 30 mg/kg) and target (90% fortified to the standard) fortification levels. Fortified wheat flour effectively covered 11–13% of non-pregnant WRA, but almost no pregnant women. Although bouillon was consumed by > 98% of households, low estimated iron absorption from fortified bouillon (2%) led to low effective coverage. Iron-fortified rice (90% fortified at 120 mg/kg) was predicted to effectively cover the largest number of WRA (reducing inadequate intake to ∼30%), but at a cost of $7.80 per WRA-year effectively covered. CONCLUSIONS: Of the food vehicles modeled, wheat flour was the most cost-effective for reducing inadequate iron intake. Modeling iron fortification of individual and combinations of food vehicles showed that well-designed LSFF programs can contribute to improving iron status among non-pregnant women, but eliminating inadequate iron intake among all WRA will require complementary iron interventions. International audience; The late early Miocene Béon 1 locality has yielded an abundant vertebrate fauna with more than 5,000 remains assigned to four rhinocerotid species: the stem rhinocerotine Plesiaceratherium mirallesi, the teleoceratines Prosantorhinus douvillei and Brachypotherium brachypus, and the early-diverging elasmotheriine Hispanotherium beonense. Such a profusion of closely related large herbivore species co-occurring raises questions about habitat capacity and niche partitioning. To investigate potential niche partitioning of Béon 1 rhinocerotids, we studied their ecology through texture microwear (short-term diet proxy), mesowear (long-term diet proxy), and enamel hypoplasia (environmental stress proxy). The mesowear revealed no significant differences between the species, with low scores suggesting browsing preferences, while microwear suggested subtle dietary variations. We concluded that Plesiaceratherium mirallesi and Prosantorhinus douvillei were browsers probably consuming a lot of leaves, while Brachypotherium brachypus and Hispanotherium beonense were mixed-feeders. Concerning hypoplasia, the overall prevalence was high at Béon 1, with more than 25 % of the teeth affected (216 teeth out of 832). There were, however, huge discrepancies depending on the species, tooth loci, or type of hypoplasia considered. Interestingly, H. beonense had the greatest dietary flexibility and the lowest hypoplasia prevalence (13.04 %). Both teleoceratines were very affected by hypoplasia, suggesting whether a comparable high sensitivity to stress (phylogeny) or similar habitat-related stresses (environment). The most affected loci were p4 (48.15 %), m3 (46.81 %), and D4 (46.15 %), reflecting vulnerability periods around weaning, environment-related, and near birth, respectively.
