The luminescence of skim milk samples with distinct protein content doped with rhodamine B was investigated. The samples were excited by a nanosecond laser tuned at 532 nm, and the emission was characterized as a random laser. Its features were analyzed as a function of the protein aggregate content. The results showed a linear correlation between the random laser peak intensity and the protein content. This paper proposes a rapid detection photonic method to evaluate the protein content in skim milk based on the intensity of the random laser emission.

The present work reports the effects of meso-tetrakis (4-sulfonatophenyl) porphyrin (TPPS 4 ) aggregation on its excited states absorption spectra, triplet states quenching by molecular oxygen and singlet oxygen production. Experimental techniques such as optical absorption, Z-scan with a white light continuum source and the Laser Flash Photolysis were used to fulfil the study. J-aggregates possess reverse saturable absorption in the 505-660 nm spectral range with a peak centered close to 540 nm. These facts together with their fast relaxation time suggest that they can be employed as material for ultrafast optical limiting and switching. Even though aggregation reduces the porphyrin excited-state lifetimes and quantum yields, it does not reduce the probability of the contact between the quencher and the excited aggregate. Aggregation does not change the contribution of energy transfer mechanisms to triplet state quenching by molecular oxygen. The production of singlet oxygen, the intense absorption in the phototherapeutic window and the high efficiency of conversion of light energy into heat, allow consider J-aggregates as a theranostic agent for photomedicine. To infer changes in the photophysical properties of porphyrins due to complexation with albumin, a combination of Z-scan and conventional spectroscopic techniques was employed. We measured the characteristics of excited states of meso-tetrakis(sulfonatophenyl) porphyrin bound to bovine serum albumin and observed that the binding reduces the intersystem crossing quantum yield and increases the internal conversion one. A reverse saturable absorption process was observed in the nanosecond timescale. These results are important for prediction of the efficiency of this complex in medical and optical applications, because associating porphyrins to proteins enables better accumulation in tumors and improves its stability in optical devices, but at the same time, decreases its triplet quantum yield.

The luminescence spectra of milk containing rhodamine 6G are shown to exhibit typical signatures of random lasing when excited with 532 nm laser pulses. Experiments carried out on whole and skim forms of two commercial brands of UHT milk, with fat volume concentrations ranging from 0 to 4%, presented lasing threshold values dependent on the fat concentration, suggesting that a random laser technique can be developed to monitor such important parameter.

We report on the third-harmonic generation of femtosecond laser pulses at interfaces. We measured slabs of different types of optical glasses and demonstrated that the asymmetric intensity profile observed for a tightly focused beam can be explained by self-focusing effects.

This work reports on the photophysical properties of zinc porphyrins meso-tetrakis methylpyridiniumyl (Zn(2+)TMPyP) and meso-tetrakis sulfonatophenyl (Zn(2+)TPPS) in homogeneous aqueous solutions and in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) micelles. The excited-state dynamic was investigated with the Z-scan technique, UV-Vis absorption, and fluorescence spectroscopy. Photophysical parameters were obtained by analyzing the experimental data with a conventional five-energy-level diagram. The interaction of the charged side porphyrin groups with oppositely charged surfactants can reduce the electrostatic repulsion between porphyrin molecules leading to aggregation, which affected the porphyrin characteristics such as absorption cross-sections, lifetimes and quantum yields. The interaction between anionic ZnTPPS with cationic CTAB micelles induced the formation of porphyrin J-aggregates, while this effect was not observed in the interaction of ZnTMPyP with SDS micelles. This difference is, probably, due to the difference in electrostatic repulsion between the porphyrin molecules. The insights obtained by these results are important for the understanding of the photophysical behavior of porphyrins, regarding potential applications in pharmacokinetics as encapsulation of photosensitizer for drug delivery systems and in its interaction with cellular membrane., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier B.V. The present work employs a set of complementary techniques to investigate the influence of outlying Ru(II) groups on the ground- and excited-state photophysical properties of free-base tetrapyridyl porphyrin (H(2)TPyP). Single pulse and pulse train Z-scan techniques used in association with laser flash photolysis, absorbance and fluorescence spectroscopy, and fluorescence decay measurements, allowed us to conclude that the presence of outlying Ru(II) groups causes significant changes on both electronic structure and vibrational properties of porphyrin. Such modifications take place mainly due to the activation of nonradiative decay channels responsible for the emission quenching, as well as by favoring some vibrational modes in the light absorption process. It is also observed that, differently from what happens when the Ru(II) is placed at the center of the macrocycle, the peripheral groups cause an increase of the intersystem crossing processes, probably due to the structural distortion of the ring that implies a worse spin-orbit coupling, responsible for the intersystem crossing mechanism.

Porphyrins are an important class of organic molecules, with interesting linear and nonlinear optical properties given mainly by their extended π-conjugation structure. Their photophysical properties can be greatly affected by the surrounding environment, which can be used to tune its final properties. Here we report on an experimental study of the photophysical properties of meso-tetrakis (methylpyridiniumyl) porphyrin (TMPyP) in aqueous and in several organic solvents and its interaction with micelles formed from negatively charged sodium dodecylsulphate (SDS), positively charged cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) and neutral TRITON X-100. By using the Z-scan technique, flash-photolysis and time-resolved fluorescence techniques, we were able to evaluate the excited state dynamics of the TMPyP, and observed that the tetrapyrrole ring plays important role due to hydrogen bonds formation between nitrogen atom and water, while the side groups determine the porphyrin localization in non-aqueous micelle part., (Crown Copyright © 2011. The excited state dynamics of Zn2+, Fe3+, and Mn3+ meso-tetra(sulfonatophenyl) porphyrin complexes were investigated with a Z-scan technique at 532 nm using 70 ps and 120 fs single pulses and 200 ns pulse trains of a Q-switched and mode locked laser. We determined the characteristic interconversion and intersystem crossing times, quantum yields of the excited S1 state, and S1 --> Sn and T1 --> Tn transition cross-sections. The ground state cross-sections were obtained using UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, and a five-energy-level diagram was used to yield the photophysical parameters mentioned previously.

This work reports on the effect of temperature on the two-photon absorption cross section of azoaromatic chromophores. A linear decrease in the two-photon absorption cross section with the temperature was observed for several azochromophores. This process was characterized by introducing a two-photon absorption thermal coefficient (ddelta/dT), whose typical values are approximately 2GM/degrees C for all the azochromophores studied here. Such an effect was attributed to thermal induced molecular conformation changes, described by the sum-over-states model and semiempirical calculations, which affect the molecular dipole moments. The characterization of the phenomenon reported here for other nonlinear materials can help in the design of specific applications using two-photon absorption.

A systematic study of the degenerate two-photon absorption (2PA) spectra of seven azoaromatic compounds in dimethyl sulfoxide solution is reported, which employed the Z-scan technique with femtosecond laser pulses from the bottom of the azo compound absorption bands up to 1100 nm. The 2PA peaks for pseudostilbene-type azo compounds (Disperse Orange (DO) 3, Disperse Red (DR) 13, DR1, DR19, and DR19-Cl) were observed at twice the peak wavelength of the linear absorption. However, such peaks were not observed for other azo compounds (PAMINO and DIAMINO) because of the symmetry of these molecules. A resonance enhancement of the 2PA cross-section was observed for all compounds. The 2PA peak and the nonlinear resonance enhancement behavior could be adjusted with a model based on perturbation theory. Such knowledge can be a guideline to the understanding of the 2PA process in azoaromatic compounds.

The nanoscale interactions between adjacent layers of layer-by-layer (LBL) films from poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and azodye Brilliant Yellow (BY) have been investigated, with the films employed for optical storage and the formation of surface-relief gratings. Using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, we identified interactions involving SO3- groups from BY and NH+ groups from PAH. These electrostatic interactions were responsible for the slow kinetics of writing in the optical storage experiments, due to a tendency to hinder photoisomerization and the subsequent reorientation of the azochromophores. The photoinduced birefringence did not saturate after one hour of exposure to the writing laser, whereas in azopolymer films, saturation is normally reached within a few minutes. On the other hand, the presence of such interactions prevented thermal relaxation of the chromophores after the writing laser was switched off, leading to a very stable written pattern. Moreover, the nanoscale interactions promoted mass transport for photoinscription of surface-relief gratings on PAH/BY LBL films, with the azochromophores being able to drag the inert PAH chains when undergoing the trans-cis-trans photoisomerization cycles. A low level of chromophore degradation was involved in the SRG photoinscription, which was confirmed with micro-Raman and fluorescence spectroscopies.

We present an analytical treatment of the force on a two-level atom interacting with a three-dimensional optical molasses. We show that, for small misalignment of the molasses light fields, corresponding to the so-called supermolasses configuration, there can be a dynamically induced stabilization of the atomic motion. This stabilization increases the time required for the atom to diffuse out of the molasses region and therefore provides a novel explanation of experimental observations. We describe the stabilization effect by analogy with the stabilization of the Kapitza pendulum, which is subject to a harmonic modulation of the pendulum pivot point.
