1. EFFECT OF DRY HEAT AND HOT WATER TREATMENT ON THE GERMINATION AND CONTROL OF MICROORGANISMS ASSOCIATED WITH CASTOR BEAN SEEDS

RESUMO O presente trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar o efeito do tratamento térmico (calor-seco e água quente) sobre a germinação e controle de micro-organismos associados às sementes de mamoneira. No calor seco, as sementes foram submetidas às temperaturas de 70 e 75º C e seis tempos de exposições [0 (testemunha), 3, 6, 9, 12 e 15 dias]. Para água quente, as temperaturas foram de 42º C, 46º C e 50º C, e imersão por 15 e 30 minutos. Como referência de controle, fezse tratamento com carbendazim + thiram (60 g + 140 g/100 kg de sementes). Para avaliar a incidência de fungos nas sementes utilizou-se o teste de sanidade. A avaliação da germinação foi feita pelo método do rolo de papel toalha. O controle de micro-organismos mostrou-se satisfatório nos dois tratamentos térmicos, se comparados à testemunha. O calor seco, nos maiores tempos, apontou um índice de contaminação de 0,59 contra 2,58 da testemunha. A água quente, nas maiores temperaturas, mostrou um índice de contaminação de 0,9 contra 2,92 da testemunha. Foi observada relação inversa entre a sanidade das sementes e germinação, no tratamento com calor seco. Neste, a germinação das sementes ficou abaixo da testemunha. O tratamento com água quente não interferiu na germinação das sementes, que se mantiveram estatisticamente iguais à testemunha. ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the thermotherapy method (dry-heat and hot water) in the germination and control of microorganisms associated to castor bean seeds. Using the dry-heat treatment, the seeds were exposed for 6 different times [0 (control); 3; 6; 9; 12; 15 days] at temperatures of 70º C and 75º C. In a second treatment, three different temperatures (42º C, 46º C and 50º C) were used for 15 and 30 minutes in hot water. Another set of seeds were treated with carbendazim + thiram (60 g + 140 g/ 100 kg seed), as a control. The incidence of fungi was evaluated by means of the seed health test. Seed germination was evaluated through the paper towel method. The control of microorganisms was satisfactory for both thermal treatments, compared with the control. The higher exposure times to dry-heat treatment presented a contamination index of 0.59, compared to 2.58 for the control. Using hot water, at higher temperaturas, the contamination index was 0.9, compared to 2.92 for the control. However, the seed germination was compromised when using dry-heat treatment at these temperatures. For its part the hot water treatment did not affect the seed germination percentage.

Abstract

A measurement of the cosmic ray positron fraction e+/(e+ + e−) in the energy range of 1–30 GeV is presented. The measurement is based on data taken by the AMS-01 experiment during its 10 day Space Shuttle flight in June 1998. A proton background suppression on the order of 10^6 is reached by identifying converted bremsstrahlung photons emitted from positrons

Abstract

The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS-02) is a high energy particle physics experiment that will study cosmic rays in the 100 MeV to 1 TeV range and will be installed on the International Space Station (ISS) for at least 3 years. A first version of AMS-02, AMS-01, flew aboard the space shuttle Discovery from June 2 to June 12, 1998, and collected 10^8 cosmic ray triggers. Part of the Mir space station was within the AMS-01 field of view during the four day Mir docking phase of this flight. We have reconstructed an image of this part of the Mir space station using secondary pi and mu emissions from primary cosmic rays interacting with Mir. This is the first time this reconstruction was performed in AMS-01, and it is important for understanding potential backgrounds during the 3 year AMS-02 mission

Abstract

The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS-02) is a high energy particle physics experiment that will study cosmic rays in the $\sim 100 \mathrm{MeV}$ to $1 \mathrm{TeV}$ range and will be installed on the International Space Station (ISS) for at least 3 years. A first version of AMS-02, AMS-01, flew aboard the space shuttle \emph{Discovery} from June 2 to June 12, 1998, and collected $10^8$ cosmic ray triggers. Part of the \emph{Mir} space station was within the AMS-01 field of view during the four day \emph{Mir} docking phase of this flight. We have reconstructed an image of this part of the \emph{Mir} space station using secondary $\pi^-$ and $\mu^-$ emissions from primary cosmic rays interacting with \emph{Mir}. This is the first time this reconstruction was performed in AMS-01, and it is important for understanding potential backgrounds during the 3 year AMS-02 mission., Comment: To be submitted to NIM B Added material requested by referee. 8. The Mitochondrial COI/tRNA SER(UCN) G7444A Mutation may be Associated with Hearing Impairment in a Han Chinese Family.

Abstract

Variations in mitochondrial genome have been found to be associated with hearing loss. Of these, the mitochondrial 12S rRNA and tRNA Ser(UCN) are the hot-spots for pathogenic variants associated with deafness. To understand the putative role of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) variants in hearing loss, we recently screened the variants in mitochondrial genomes in patients with deafness from the Hangzhou area of Zhejiang Province, People's Republic of China (PRC). In this study, we describe a maternally-inherited Han Chinese family with high penetrance of hearing loss, notably, the penetrance of hearing loss in this family were 80.0 and 40.0%, when the aminoglycoside was included or excluded. Three matrilineal relatives in this pedigree exhibited different levels of hearing loss with different age at onset. In addition, sequence analysis of the complete mitochondrial genome showed the presence of the well-known C1494T pathogenic variant in the 12S rRNA gene and the G7444A pathogenic variant in the COI/ tRNA Ser(UCN) . The C1494T anomaly had been reported to be a pathogenic mutation associated with aminoglycoside-induced and nonsyndromic hearing loss (AINHL), while the G7444A was considered as a secondary mutation associated with deafness. However, the lack of functional variants in GJB2 and TRMU genes suggested that nuclear modified genes may not play important roles in deafness expression. Thus, the combination of G7444A and C1494T pathogenic variants in the mitochondrial genome may account for the high penetrance of hearing loss in this Chinese family.
