This paper introduces rStar, a self-play mutual reasoning approach that significantly improves reasoning capabilities of small language models (SLMs) without fine-tuning or superior models. rStar decouples reasoning into a self-play mutual generation-discrimination process. First, a target SLM augments the Monte Carlo Tree Search (MCTS) with a rich set of human-like reasoning actions to construct higher quality reasoning trajectories. Next, another SLM, with capabilities similar to the target SLM, acts as a discriminator to verify each trajectory generated by the target SLM. The mutually agreed reasoning trajectories are considered mutual consistent, thus are more likely to be correct. Extensive experiments across five SLMs demonstrate rStar can effectively solve diverse reasoning problems, including GSM8K, GSM-Hard, MATH, SVAMP, and StrategyQA. Remarkably, rStar boosts GSM8K accuracy from 12.51% to 63.91% for LLaMA2-7B, from 36.46% to 81.88% for Mistral-7B, from 74.53% to 91.13% for LLaMA3-8B-Instruct. Existing top-performance autonomous driving systems typically rely on the multi-modal fusion strategy for reliable scene understanding. This design is however fundamentally restricted due to overlooking the modality-specific strengths and finally hampering the model performance. To address this limitation, in this work, we introduce a novel modality interaction strategy that allows individual per-modality representations to be learned and maintained throughout, enabling their unique characteristics to be exploited during the whole perception pipeline. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed strategy, we design DeepInteraction++, a multi-modal interaction framework characterized by a multi-modal representational interaction encoder and a multi-modal predictive interaction decoder. Specifically, the encoder is implemented as a dual-stream Transformer with specialized attention operation for information exchange and integration between separate modality-specific representations. Our multi-modal representational learning incorporates both object-centric, precise sampling-based feature alignment and global dense information spreading, essential for the more challenging planning task. The decoder is designed to iteratively refine the predictions by alternately aggregating information from separate representations in a unified modality-agnostic manner, realizing multi-modal predictive interaction. Extensive experiments demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed framework on both 3D object detection and end-to-end autonomous driving tasks. The interplay between strong long-range interactions and the coherent driving contribute to the formation of complex patterns, symmetry, and novel phases of matter in many-body systems. However, long-range interactions may induce an additional dissipation channel, resulting in non-Hermitian many-body dynamics and the emergence of exceptional points in spectrum. Here, we report experimental observation of interaction-induced exceptional points in cold Rydberg atomic gases, revealing the breaking of charge-conjugation parity symmetry. By measuring the transmission spectrum under increasing and decreasing probe intensity, the interaction-induced hysteresis trajectories are observed, which give rise to non-Hermitian dynamics. We record the area enclosed by hysteresis loops and investigate the dynamics of hysteresis loops. The reported exceptional points and hysteresis trajectories in cold Rydberg atomic gases provide valuable insights into the underlying non-Hermitian physics in many-body systems, allowing us to study the interplay between long-range interactions and non-Hermiticity.

The significance of background information is frequently overlooked in contemporary research concerning channel attention mechanisms. This study addresses the issue of suboptimal single-spectral nighttime pedestrian detection performance under low-light conditions by incorporating background information into the channel attention mechanism. Despite numerous studies focusing on the development of efficient channel attention mechanisms, the relevance of background information has been largely disregarded. By adopting a contrast learning approach, we reexamine channel attention with regard to pedestrian objects and background information for nighttime pedestrian detection, resulting in the proposed Fore-Background Contrast Attention (FBCA). FBCA possesses two primary attributes: (1) channel descriptors form remote dependencies with global spatial feature information; (2) the integration of background information enhances the distinction between channels concentrating on low-light pedestrian features and those focusing on background information. Consequently, the acquired channel descriptors exhibit a higher semantic level and spatial accuracy. Experimental outcomes demonstrate that FBCA significantly outperforms existing methods in single-spectral nighttime pedestrian detection, achieving state-of-the-art results on the NightOwls and TJU-DHD-pedestrian datasets. Furthermore, this methodology also yields performance improvements for the multispectral LLVIP dataset. These findings indicate that integrating background information into the channel attention mechanism effectively mitigates detector performance degradation caused by illumination factors in nighttime scenarios.

Model networks and their underlying topologies have been used as a reference for techno-economic studies for several decades. Existing reference topologies for optical networks may cover different network segments such as backbone, metro core, metro aggregation, access and/or data center. While telco operators work on the optimization of their own existing deployed optical networks, the availability of different topologies is useful for researchers and technology developers to test their solutions in a variety of scenarios and validate the performance in terms of energy efficiency or cost reduction. This paper presents an open-source tool, MoleNetwork, to generate graphs inspired by real network topologies of telecommunication operators that can be used as benchmarks for techno-economic studies.

While generative models have made significant advancements in recent years, they also raise concerns such as privacy breaches and biases. Machine unlearning has emerged as a viable solution, aiming to remove specific training data, e.g., containing private information and bias, from models. In this paper, we study the machine unlearning problem in Image-to-Image (I2I) generative models. Previous studies mainly treat it as a single objective optimization problem, offering a solitary solution, thereby neglecting the varied user expectations towards the trade-off between complete unlearning and model utility. To address this issue, we propose a controllable unlearning framework that uses a control coefficient $\varepsilon$ to control the trade-off. We reformulate the I2I generative model unlearning problem into a $\varepsilon$-constrained optimization problem and solve it with a gradient-based method to find optimal solutions for unlearning boundaries. These boundaries define the valid range for the control coefficient. Within this range, every yielded solution is theoretically guaranteed with Pareto optimality. We also analyze the convergence rate of our framework under various control functions. Affective brain-computer interfaces (aBCIs) are increasingly recognized for their potential in monitoring and interpreting emotional states through electroencephalography (EEG) signals. Current EEG-based emotion recognition methods perform well with short segments of EEG data. However, these methods encounter significant challenges in real-life scenarios where emotional states evolve over extended periods. To address this issue, we propose a Dual Attentive (DuA) transformer framework for long-term continuous EEG emotion analysis. Unlike segment-based approaches, the DuA transformer processes an entire EEG trial as a whole, identifying emotions at the trial level, referred to as trial-based emotion analysis. This framework is designed to adapt to varying signal lengths, providing a substantial advantage over traditional methods. The DuA transformer incorporates three key modules: the spatial-spectral network module, the temporal network module, and the transfer learning module. The spatial-spectral network module simultaneously captures spatial and spectral information from EEG signals, while the temporal network module detects temporal dependencies within long-term EEG data. The transfer learning module enhances the model's adaptability across different subjects and conditions. We extensively evaluate the DuA transformer using a self-constructed long-term EEG emotion database, along with two benchmark EEG emotion databases. On the basis of the trial-based leave-one-subject-out cross-subject cross-validation protocol, our experimental results demonstrate that the proposed DuA transformer significantly outperforms existing methods in long-term continuous EEG emotion analysis, with an average enhancement of 5.28%., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures

We present MoE-DiffIR, an innovative universal compressed image restoration (CIR) method with task-customized diffusion priors. This intends to handle two pivotal challenges in the existing CIR methods: (i) lacking adaptability and universality for different image codecs, e.g., JPEG and WebP; (ii) poor texture generation capability, particularly at low bitrates. Specifically, our MoE-DiffIR develops the powerful mixture-of-experts (MoE) prompt module, where some basic prompts cooperate to excavate the task-customized diffusion priors from Stable Diffusion (SD) for each compression task. Moreover, the degradation-aware routing mechanism is proposed to enable the flexible assignment of basic prompts. To activate and reuse the cross-modality generation prior of SD, we design the visual-to-text adapter for MoE-DiffIR, which aims to adapt the embedding of low-quality images from the visual domain to the textual domain as the textual guidance for SD, enabling more consistent and reasonable texture generation. We also construct one comprehensive benchmark dataset for universal CIR, covering 21 types of degradations from 7 popular traditional and learned codecs. Trained on 680,000 hours of massive speech data, Whisper is a multitasking, multilingual speech foundation model demonstrating superior performance in automatic speech recognition, translation, and language identification. However, its applicability in speaker verification (SV) tasks remains unexplored, particularly in low-data-resource scenarios where labeled speaker data in specific domains are limited. To fill this gap, we propose a lightweight adaptor framework to boost SV with Whisper, namely Whisper-SV. Given that Whisper is not specifically optimized for SV tasks, we introduce a representation selection module to quantify the speaker-specific characteristics contained in each layer of Whisper and select the top-k layers with prominent discriminative speaker features. To aggregate pivotal speaker-related features while diminishing non-speaker redundancies across the selected top-k distinct layers of Whisper, we design a multi-layer aggregation module in Whisper-SV to integrate multi-layer representations into a singular, compacted representation for SV. In the multi-layer aggregation module, we employ convolutional layers with shortcut connections among different layers to refine speaker characteristics derived from multi-layer representations from Whisper. In addition, an attention aggregation layer is used to reduce non-speaker interference and amplify speaker-specific cues for SV tasks. Finally, a simple classification module is used for speaker classification. Experiments on VoxCeleb1, FFSVC, and IMSV datasets demonstrate that Whisper-SV achieves EER/minDCF of 2.22%/0.307, 6.14%/0.488, and 7.50%/0.582, respectively, showing superior performance in low-data-resource SV scenarios.

Code generation, the task of producing source code from prompts, has seen significant advancements with the advent of pre-trained large language models (PLMs). Despite these achievements, there lacks a comprehensive taxonomy of weaknesses about the benchmark and the generated code, which risks the community's focus on known issues at the cost of under-explored areas. Our systematic study aims to fill this gap by evaluating five state-of-the-art PLMs: three larger models, CodeGen2.5 with 7 billion parameters, CodeGeeX2 with 6 billion parameters, GPT-4 Turbo, and two smaller ones, UnixCoder with 110 million parameters and CodeT5 base with 220 million parameters, across three popular datasets, CoNaLa, HumanEval Plus, and DS-1000. We assess the quality of generated code using match-based and execution-based metrics, then conduct thematic analysis to develop a taxonomy of nine types of weaknesses. We dissected weakness distributions in both larger and smaller models, applying an extensive methodology that encompasses model-specific as well as collective analysis (union and intersection) across models. Our research uncovers three salient findings: 1. In the CoNaLa dataset, inaccurate prompts are a notable problem, causing all large models to fail in 26.84% of cases, with even higher failure rates of 40% for smaller models; 2. Missing pivotal semantics is a pervasive issue across benchmarks, with one or more large models omitting key semantics in 65.78% of CoNaLa tasks, and similarly high occurrences in HumanEval Plus (66.09%) and DS-1000 (80.51%); 3. All models struggle with proper API usage, a challenge amplified by vague or complex prompts. Our findings aim to steer researchers towards addressing specific weaknesses and challenges in code generation. Furthermore, our annotations can offer a targeted benchmark subset for detailed analysis.

It is well-known that maximally entangled GHZ states can achieve perfect teleportation and superdense coding, whereas maximally entangled W states cannot. However, it has been demonstrated that there exists a special class of non-maximally entangled W states, called as \textit{W-like} states, which can overcome this limitation. Therefore, it is of great significance to prepare such W-like states for efficient quantum communication. Here, we propose two kinds of novel and efficient fusion schemes for atomic W-like states based on the large-detuning interactions between several atoms and a single-mode cavity field, with which large-scale atomic $|\mathcal{W}_{N+M-1}\rangle$ and $|\mathcal{W}_{N+M+T-2}\rangle$ states can be prepared, respectively, from two small-scale atomic $|\mathcal{W}_{N}\rangle$ and $|\mathcal{W}_{M}\rangle$ states and three small-scale atomic $|\mathcal{W}_{N}\rangle$, $|\mathcal{W}_{M}\rangle$ and $|\mathcal{W}_{T}\rangle$ states, by detecting the states of one or two of the fused atoms. Particularly, although the fusion process of our scheme involves particle loss, the corresponding success probability is high and fixed, which may induce high fusion efficiency. Furthermore, through the investigation of the resource cost and feasibility analysis, our protocol is simple and feasible under the current experimental conditions. Leveraging neural implicit representation to conduct dense RGB-D SLAM has been studied in recent years. However, this approach relies on a static environment assumption and does not work robustly within a dynamic environment due to the inconsistent observation of geometry and photometry. To address the challenges presented in dynamic environments, we propose a novel dynamic SLAM framework with neural radiance field. Specifically, we introduce a motion mask generation method to filter out the invalid sampled rays. This design effectively fuses the optical flow mask and semantic mask to enhance the precision of motion mask. To further improve the accuracy of pose estimation, we have designed a divide-and-conquer pose optimization algorithm that distinguishes between keyframes and non-keyframes. The proposed edge warp loss can effectively enhance the geometry constraints between adjacent frames. Recent advancements in integrating large language models (LLMs) with application programming interfaces (APIs) have gained significant interest in both academia and industry. These API-based agents, leveraging the strong autonomy and planning capabilities of LLMs, can efficiently solve problems requiring multi-step actions. However, their ability to handle multi-dimensional difficulty levels, diverse task types, and real-world demands through APIs remains unknown. In this paper, we introduce \textsc{ShortcutsBench}, a large-scale benchmark for the comprehensive evaluation of API-based agents in solving tasks with varying levels of difficulty, diverse task types, and real-world demands. \textsc{ShortcutsBench} includes a wealth of real APIs from Apple Inc.'s operating systems, refined user queries from shortcuts, human-annotated high-quality action sequences from shortcut developers, and accurate parameter filling values about primitive parameter types, enum parameter types, outputs from previous actions, and parameters that need to request necessary information from the system or user. Our extensive evaluation of agents built with $5$ leading open-source (size >= 57B) and $4$ closed-source LLMs (e.g. Gemini-1.5-Pro and GPT-3.5) reveals significant limitations in handling complex queries related to API selection, parameter filling, and requesting necessary information from systems and users. These findings highlight the challenges that API-based agents face in effectively fulfilling real and complex user queries. Large language models (LLMs) have been employed in various intelligent educational tasks to assist teaching. While preliminary explorations have focused on independent LLM-empowered agents for specific educational tasks, the potential for LLMs within a multi-agent collaborative framework to simulate a classroom with real user participation remains unexplored. In this work, we propose SimClass, a multi-agent classroom simulation framework involving user participation. We recognize representative class roles and introduce a novel class control mechanism for automatic classroom teaching, and conduct user experiments in two real-world courses. Utilizing the Flanders Interactive Analysis System and Community of Inquiry theoretical frame works from educational analysis, we demonstrate that LLMs can simulate traditional classroom interaction patterns effectively while enhancing user's experience. We also observe emergent group behaviors among agents in SimClass, where agents collaborate to create enlivening interactions in classrooms to improve user learning process. We hope this work pioneers the application of LLM-empowered multi-agent systems in virtual classroom teaching.

We present the phase-connected timing solutions of all the five pulsars in globular cluster (GC) M3 (NGC 5272), namely PSRs M3A to F (PSRs J1342+2822A to F), with the exception of PSR M3C, from FAST archival data. In these timing solutions, those of PSRs M3E, and F are obtained for the first time. We find that PSRs M3E and F have low mass companions, and are in circular orbits with periods of 7.1 and 3.0 days, respectively. For PSR M3C, we have not detected it in all the 41 observations. We found no X-ray counterparts for these pulsars in archival Chandra images in the band of 0.2-20 keV. We noticed that the pulsars in M3 seem to be native. From the Auto-Correlation Function (ACF) analysis of the M3A's and M3B's dynamic spectra, the scintillation timescale ranges from $7.0\pm0.3$ min to $60.0\pm0.6$ min, and the scintillation bandwidth ranges from $4.6\pm0.2$ MHz to $57.1\pm1.1$ MHz. The measured scintillation bandwidths from the dynamic spectra indicate strong scintillation, and the scattering medium is anisotropic. From the secondary spectra, we captured a scintillation arc only for PSR M3B with a curvature of $649\pm23 {\rm m}^{-1} {\rm mHz}^{-2}$., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

In this work we try to search for signals generated by ultra-heavy dark matter at the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) data. We look for possible gamma-ray by dark matter annihilation or decay from 16 dwarf spheroidal galaxies in the field of view of LHAASO. Dwarf spheroidal galaxies are among the most promising targets for indirect detection of dark matter which have low fluxes of astrophysical $\gamma$-ray background while large amount of dark matter. By analyzing more than 700 days observational data at LHAASO, no significant dark matter signal from 1 TeV to 1 EeV is detected. Accordingly we derive the most stringent constraints on the ultra-heavy dark matter annihilation cross-section up to EeV. Speaker Change Detection (SCD) is to identify boundaries among speakers in a conversation. Motivated by the success of fine-tuning wav2vec 2.0 models for the SCD task, a further investigation of self-supervised learning (SSL) features for SCD is conducted in this work. Specifically, an SCD model, named SCDNet, is proposed. With this model, various state-of-the-art SSL models, including Hubert, wav2vec 2.0, and WavLm are investigated. To discern the most potent layer of SSL models for SCD, a learnable weighting method is employed to analyze the effectiveness of intermediate representations. Additionally, a fine-tuning-based approach is also implemented to further compare the characteristics of SSL models in the SCD task. Furthermore, a contrastive learning method is proposed to mitigate the overfitting tendencies in the training of both the fine-tuning-based method and SCDNet. Experiments showcase the superiority of WavLm in the SCD task and also demonstrate the good design of SCDNet.

We investigate proton-antiproton ($p\bar{p}$) pair production via photon-photon fusion in the ultra-peripheral collisions at RHIC, employing a joint impact parameter and transverse momentum dependent formalism. We consider proton exchange, $s$-channel resonance and hand-bag mechanisms, predicting differential distributions of $p\bar p$ production. In the extended thermodynamics of black holes, there exists a thermodynamical pressure and its conjugate volume. Extensive studies have been conducted on the phase structure of numerous black holes, which have demonstrated striking similarities to the phase structure of various ordinary matter systems. A comparison of the thermodynamic properties of spherically symmetric AdS black holes with those of ordinary thermodynamic systems reveals that the isovolumetric heat capacity of the former is zero, whereas that of the latter is non-zero. It is a subject of interest for the intrinsic reason for this discrepancy. The effective thermodynamic quantities, based on the context of the boundary between the black hole horizon and the cosmological horizon in dS spacetime, as well as the interaction between the two horizons, are presented. The heat capacity in the Reissner-N\"{o}rdstrom-de Sitter (RN-dS) spacetime is then investigated, and it is demonstrated that the behavior of the heat capacity in the RN-dS spacetime is analogous to that of Schottky specific heat. Treating the two horizon interfaces in the RN-dS spacetime as two distinct energy levels in a two-energy system, and the thermodynamic properties in the RN-dS spacetime are discussed with the method of studying the thermodynamic properties in an ordinary two-energy system, to elucidate the intrinsic reasons for the occurrence of Schottky specific heat in the RN-dS spacetime. The heat capacity observed in the RN-dS spacetime is not only consistent with that of the Schottky specific heat described by the effective thermodynamic quantities in the RN-dS spacetime, but also with that of the heat capacity in an ordinary two-energy-level system. The quantum properties in the RN-dS spacetime are reflected, thereby providing a new avenue for further in-depth study of the quantum properties of black holes and dS spacetime.

Point management is a critical component in optimizing 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) models, as the point initiation (e.g., via structure from motion) is distributionally inappropriate. Typically, the Adaptive Density Control (ADC) algorithm is applied, leveraging view-averaged gradient magnitude thresholding for point densification, opacity thresholding for pruning, and regular all-points opacity reset. However, we reveal that this strategy is limited in tackling intricate/special image regions (e.g., transparent) as it is unable to identify all the 3D zones that require point densification, and lacking an appropriate mechanism to handle the ill-conditioned points with negative impacts (occlusion due to false high opacity). To address these limitations, we propose a Localized Point Management (LPM) strategy, capable of identifying those error-contributing zones in the highest demand for both point addition and geometry calibration. Zone identification is achieved by leveraging the underlying multiview geometry constraints, with the guidance of image rendering errors. We apply point densification in the identified zone, whilst resetting the opacity of those points residing in front of these regions so that a new opportunity is created to correct ill-conditioned points. Serving as a versatile plugin, LPM can be seamlessly integrated into existing 3D Gaussian Splatting models. Experimental evaluation across both static 3D and dynamic 4D scenes validate the efficacy of our LPM strategy in boosting a variety of existing 3DGS models both quantitatively and qualitatively. Notably, LPM improves both vanilla 3DGS and SpaceTimeGS to achieve state-of-the-art rendering quality while retaining real-time speeds, outperforming on challenging datasets such as Tanks & Temples and the Neural 3D Video Dataset.

Data driven models for automated diagnosis in radiology suffer from insufficient and imbalanced datasets due to low representation of pathology in a population and the cost of expert annotations. Datasets can be bolstered through data augmentation. However, even when utilizing a full suite of transformations during model training, typical data augmentations do not address variations in human anatomy. An alternative direction is to synthesize data using generative models, which can potentially craft datasets with specific attributes. While this holds promise, commonly used generative models such as Generative Adversarial Networks may inadvertently produce anatomically inaccurate features. On the other hand, diffusion models, which offer greater stability, tend to memorize training data, raising concerns about privacy and generative diversity. Alternatively, inpainting has the potential to augment data through directly inserting pathology in medical images. However, this approach introduces a new challenge: accurately merging the generated pathological features with the surrounding anatomical context. While inpainting is a well established method for addressing simple lesions, its application to pathologies that involve complex structural changes remains relatively unexplored. We propose an efficient method for inpainting pathological features onto healthy anatomy in MRI through voxelwise noise scheduling in a latent diffusion model. We evaluate the method's ability to insert disc herniation and central canal stenosis in lumbar spine sagittal T2 MRI, and it achieves superior Frechet Inception Distance compared to state-of-the-art methods.

3D representation is essential to the significant advance of 3D generation with 2D diffusion priors. As a flexible representation, NeRF has been first adopted for 3D representation. With density-based volumetric rendering, it however suffers both intensive computational overhead and inaccurate mesh extraction. Using a signed distance field and Marching Tetrahedra, DMTet allows for precise mesh extraction and real-time rendering but is limited in handling large topological changes in meshes, leading to optimization challenges. Alternatively, 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) is favored in both training and rendering efficiency while falling short in mesh extraction. In this work, we introduce a novel 3D representation, Tetrahedron Splatting (TeT-Splatting), that supports easy convergence during optimization, precise mesh extraction, and real-time rendering simultaneously. This is achieved by integrating surface-based volumetric rendering within a structured tetrahedral grid while preserving the desired ability of precise mesh extraction, and a tile-based differentiable tetrahedron rasterizer. Furthermore, we incorporate eikonal and normal consistency regularization terms for the signed distance field to improve generation quality and stability. Critically, our representation can be trained without mesh extraction, making the optimization process easier to converge. Our TeT-Splatting can be readily integrated in existing 3D generation pipelines, along with polygonal mesh for texture optimization. Planning in textual environments have been shown to be a long-standing challenge even for current models. A recent, promising line of work uses LLMs to generate a formal representation of the environment that can be solved by a symbolic planner. However, existing methods rely on a fully-observed environment where all entity states are initially known, so a one-off representation can be constructed, leading to a complete plan. In contrast, we tackle partially-observed environments where there is initially no sufficient information to plan for the end-goal. We propose PDDLEGO that iteratively construct a planning representation that can lead to a partial plan for a given sub-goal. By accomplishing the sub-goal, more information is acquired to augment the representation, eventually achieving the end-goal. We show that plans produced by few-shot PDDLEGO are 43% more efficient than generating plans end-to-end on the Coin Collector simulation, with strong performance (98%) on the more complex Cooking World simulation where end-to-end LLMs fail to generate coherent plans (4%)., Comment: In *SEM 2024

Software architectures are usually meticulously designed to address multiple quality concerns and support long-term maintenance. However, due to the imbalance between the cost and value for developers to document design rationales (i.e., the design alternatives and the underlying arguments for making or rejecting decisions), these rationales are often obsolete or even missing. The lack of design knowledge has motivated a number of studies to extract design information from various platforms in recent years. Unfortunately, despite the wealth of discussion records related to design information provided by platforms like open-source communities, existing research often overlooks the underlying arguments behind alternatives due to challenges such as the intricate semantics of discussions and the lack of benchmarks for design rationale extraction. In this paper, we propose a novel method, named by DRMiner, to automatically mine latent design rationales from developers' live discussion in open-source community (i.e., issue logs in Jira). To better identify solutions and the arguments supporting them, DRMiner skillfully decomposes the problem into multiple text classification tasks and tackles them using prompt tuning of language models and customized text-related features. To evaluate DRMiner, we acquire issue logs from Cassandra, Flink, and Solr repositories in Jira, and then annotate and process them under a rigorous scheme, ultimately forming a dataset for design rationale mining. Experimental results show that DRMiner achieves an F1 score of 65% for mining design rationales, outperforming all baselines with a 7% improvement over GPT-4.0. Furthermore, we investigate the usefulness of the design rationales mined by DRMiner for automated program repair (APR) and find that the design rationales significantly enhance APR, achieving 14 times higher full-match repairs on average.

We present the discovery of 8 isolated millisecond pulsars in Globular Cluster (GC) NGC 6517 using the Five-Hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). The spin periods of those pulsars (namely PSR J1801-0857K to R, or, NGC 6517K to R) are all shorter than 10 ms. With these discoveries, NGC 6517 is currently the GC with the most known pulsars in the FAST sky. The largest difference in dispersion measure of the pulsars in NGC 6517 is 11.2 cm$^{-3}$ pc, the second among all GCs. The fraction of isolated pulsars in this GC (16 of 17, 94$\%$) is consistent with previous studies indicating an overabundance of isolated pulsars in the densest GCs, especially in those undergoing cluster core collapse. Considering the FAST GC pulsar discoveries, we modeled the GC pulsar population using the empirical Bayesian method described by Turk and Lorimer with the recent counts. Using this approach, we find that the expected number of potential pulsars in GCs seems to be correlated with the central escape velocity, hence, the GCs Liller 1, NGC 6441, M54 (NGC 6715), and $\omega$-Cen (NGC 5139) are expected to host the largest numbers of pulsars., Comment: 21 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Letters

In recent years, various intelligent autonomous robots have begun to appear in daily life and production. Desktop-level robots are characterized by their flexible deployment, rapid response, and suitability for light workload environments. In order to meet the current societal demand for service robot technology, this study proposes using a miniaturized desktop-level robot (by ROS) as a carrier, locally deploying a natural language model (NLP-BERT), and integrating visual recognition (CV-YOLO) and speech recognition technology (ASR-Whisper) as inputs to achieve autonomous decision-making and rational action by the desktop robot. Three comprehensive experiments were designed to validate the robotic arm, and the results demonstrate excellent performance using this approach across all three experiments. In Task 1, the execution rates for speech recognition and action performance were 92.6% and 84.3%, respectively. In Task 2, the highest execution rates under the given conditions reached 92.1% and 84.6%, while in Task 3, the highest execution rates were 95.2% and 80.8%, respectively. Therefore, it can be concluded that the proposed solution integrating ASR, NLP, and other technologies on edge devices is feasible and provides a technical and engineering foundation for realizing multimodal desktop-level robots.

Understanding the hidden mechanisms behind human's visual perception is a fundamental question in neuroscience. To that end, investigating into the neural responses of human mind activities, such as functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI), has been a significant research vehicle. However, analyzing fMRI signals is challenging, costly, daunting, and demanding for professional training. Despite remarkable progress in artificial intelligence (AI) based fMRI analysis, existing solutions are limited and far away from being biologically meaningful and practically useful. In this context, we leap forward to demonstrate how AI can go beyond the current state of the art by advancing from 2D visuals to visually plausible and functionally more comprehensive 3D visuals decoded from brain signals, enabling automatic more sophisticated modeling of fMRI data. Innovationally, we reformulate the task of analyzing fMRI data as a conditional 3D object generation problem. We design a novel 3D object representation learning method, Brain3D, that takes as input the fMRI data of a subject who was presented with a 2D image, and yields as output the corresponding 3D object visuals. Importantly, we show that our AI agent captures the distinct functionalities of each region of human vision system as well as their intricate interplay relationships, aligning remarkably with the established discoveries of neuroscience. Non-expert diagnosis indicate that \ourmodel{} can successfully identify the disordered brain regions in simulated scenarios, such as V1, V2, V3, V4, and the medial temporal lobe (MTL) within the human visual system. This paper provides a survey of the latest developments in visual signal coding and processing with generative models. Specifically, our focus is on presenting the advancement of generative models and their influence on research in the domain of visual signal coding and processing. This survey study begins with a brief introduction of well-established generative models, including the Variational Autoencoder (VAE) models, Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) models, Autoregressive (AR) models, Normalizing Flows and Diffusion models. The subsequent section of the paper explores the advancements in visual signal coding based on generative models, as well as the ongoing international standardization activities. In the realm of visual signal processing, our focus lies on the application and development of various generative models in the research of visual signal restoration. We also present the latest developments in generative visual signal synthesis and editing, along with visual signal quality assessment using generative models and quality assessment for generative models. The practical implementation of these studies is closely linked to the investigation of fast optimization. This paper additionally presents the latest advancements in fast optimization on visual signal coding and processing with generative models. We hope to advance this field by providing researchers and practitioners a comprehensive literature review on the topic of visual signal coding and processing with generative models.

Creating realistic, natural, and lip-readable talking face videos remains a formidable challenge. Previous research primarily concentrated on generating and aligning single-frame images while overlooking the smoothness of frame-to-frame transitions and temporal dependencies. This often compromised visual quality and effects in practical settings, particularly when handling complex facial data and audio content, which frequently led to semantically incongruent visual illusions. Specifically, synthesized videos commonly featured disorganized lip movements, making them difficult to understand and recognize. To overcome these limitations, this paper introduces the application of optical flow to guide facial image generation, enhancing inter-frame continuity and semantic consistency. We propose "OpFlowTalker", a novel approach that utilizes predicted optical flow changes from audio inputs rather than direct image predictions. This method smooths image transitions and aligns changes with semantic content. Moreover, it employs a sequence fusion technique to replace the independent generation of single frames, thus preserving contextual information and maintaining temporal coherence. We also developed an optical flow synchronization module that regulates both full-face and lip movements, optimizing visual synthesis by balancing regional dynamics. Furthermore, we introduce a Visual Text Consistency Score (VTCS) that accurately measures lip-readability in synthesized videos. Extensive empirical evidence validates the effectiveness of our approach.

Score-based diffusion models are frequently employed as structural priors in inverse problems. However, their iterative denoising process, initiated from Gaussian noise, often results in slow inference speeds. The Image-to-Image Schr\"odinger Bridge (I$^2$SB), which begins with the corrupted image, presents a promising alternative as a prior for addressing inverse problems. In this work, we introduce the Measurement Embedded Schr\"odinger Bridge (MESB). MESB establishes Schr\"odinger Bridges between the distribution of corrupted images and the distribution of clean images given observed measurements. Based on optimal transport theory, we derive the forward and backward processes of MESB. The randomized play-the-winner rule (RPW) is a response-adaptive design proposed by Wei and Durham (1978) for sequentially randomizing patients to treatments in a two-treatment clinical trial so that more patients are assigned to the better treatment as the clinical trial goes on. The elephant random walk (ERW) proposed by Schutz and Trimper (2004) is a non-Markovian discrete-time random walk on $\mathbb Z$ which has a link to a famous saying that elephants can always remember where they have been. The asymptotic behaviors of RPW rule and ERW have been studied in litterateurs independently, and their asymptotic behaviors are very similar. In this paper, we link RPW rule and ERW with the recursive stochastic algorithm. With the help of a recursive stochastic algorithm, we obtain the Gaussian approximation of the ERW and multi-dimensional varying-memory ERW with random step sizes. By the Gaussian approximation, the central limit theorem, precise law of the iterated logarithm, and almost sure central limit theorem are obtained for the multi-dimensional ERW, the multi-dimensional ERW with random step sizes, and their centers of mass for all the diffusive, critical, and superdiffusive regimes. The KM2A is the largest sub-array of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO). It consists of 5216 electromagnetic particle detectors (EDs) and 1188 muon detectors (MDs). The data recorded by the EDs and MDs are used to reconstruct primary information of cosmic ray and gamma-ray showers. This information is used for physical analysis in gamma-ray astronomy and cosmic ray physics. To ensure the reliability of the LHAASO-KM2A data, a three-level quality control system has been established. It is used to monitor the status of detector units, stability of reconstructed parameters and the performance of the array based on observations of the Crab Nebula and Moon shadow. This paper will introduce the control system and its application on the LHAASO-KM2A data collected from August 2021 to July 2023. During this period, the pointing and angular resolution of the array were stable. From the observations of the Moon shadow and Crab Nebula, the results achieved using the two methods are consistent with each other. According to the observation of the Crab Nebula at energies from 25 TeV to 100 TeV, the time averaged pointing errors are estimated to be $-0.003^{\circ} \pm 0.005^{\circ}$ and $0.001^{\circ} \pm 0.006^{\circ}$ in the R.A. and Dec directions, respectively., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures

The first source catalog of Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory reported the detection of a very-high-energy gamma ray source, 1LHAASO J1219+2915. In this paper a further detailed study of the spectral and temporal behavior of this point-like source have been carried. The best-fit position of the TeV source ($\rm{RA}=185.05^{\circ}\pm0.04^{\circ}$, $\rm{Dec}=29.25^{\circ}\pm0.03^{\circ}$) is compatible with NGC 4278 within $\sim0.03$ degree. Variation analysis shows an indication of the variability at a few months level in the TeV band, which is consistent with low frequency observations. Based on these observations, we report the detection of TeV $\gamma$-ray emissions from this low-luminosity AGN NGC 4278. The observations by LHAASO-WCDA during active period has a significance level of 8.8\,$\sigma$ with best-fit photon spectral index $\varGamma=2.56\pm0.14$ and a flux $f_{1-10\,\rm{TeV}}=(7.0\pm1.1_{\rm{sta}}\pm0.35_{\rm{syst}})\times10^{-13}\,\rm{photons\,cm^{-2}\,s^{-1}}$, or approximately $5\%$ of the Crab Nebula. As a deep learning model, Visual Mamba (VMamba) has a low computational complexity and a global receptive field, which has been successful applied to image classification and detection. To extend its applications, we apply VMamba to crowd counting and propose a novel VMambaCC (VMamba Crowd Counting) model. Naturally, VMambaCC inherits the merits of VMamba, or global modeling for images and low computational cost. Additionally, we design a Multi-head High-level Feature (MHF) attention mechanism for VMambaCC. MHF is a new attention mechanism that leverages high-level semantic features to augment low-level semantic features, thereby enhancing spatial feature representation with greater precision. Building upon MHF, we further present a High-level Semantic Supervised Feature Pyramid Network (HS2PFN) that progressively integrates and enhances high-level semantic information with low-level semantic information. Extensive experimental results on five public datasets validate the efficacy of our approach. For example, our method achieves a mean absolute error of 51.87 and a mean squared error of 81.3 on the ShangHaiTech\_PartA dataset. Our code is coming soon.

The success of open source software (OSS) projects relies on voluntary contributions from various community roles.Being a committer signifies gaining trust and higher privileges. Substantial studies have focused on the requirements of becoming a committer, but most of them are based on interviews or several hypotheses, lacking a comprehensive understanding of committers' qualifications.We explore both the policies and practical implementations of committer qualifications in modern top OSS communities. Through a thematic analysis of these policies, we construct a taxonomy of committer qualifications, consisting of 26 codes categorized into nine themes, including Personnel-related to Project, Communication, and Long-term Participation. We also highlight the variations in committer qualifications emphasized in different OSS community governance models. For example, projects following the core maintainer model value project comprehension, while projects following the company-backed model place significant emphasis on user issue resolution. Then, we propose eight sets of metrics and perform survival analysis on two representative OSS projects to understand how these qualifications are implemented in practice. We find that the probability of gaining commit rights decreases as participation time passes.The selection criteria in practice are generally consistent with the community policies. Developers who submit high-quality code, actively engage in code review, and make extensive contributions to related projects are more likely to be granted commit rights. However, there are some qualifications that do not align precisely, and some are not adequately evaluated. Background: X-ray grating-based dark-field imaging can sense the small angle scattering caused by an object's micro-structure. This technique is sensitive to lung's porous alveoli and is able to detect lung disease at an early stage. Up to now, a human-scale dark-field CT has been built for lung imaging. Purpose: This study aimed to develop a more thorough optimization method for dark-field lung CT and summarize principles for system design. Methods: We proposed a metric in the form of contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) for system parameter optimization, and designed a phantom with concentric circle shape to fit the task of lung disease detection. Finally, we developed the calculation method of the CNR metric, and analyzed the relation between CNR and system parameters. Results: We showed that with other parameters held constant, the CNR first increases and then decreases with the system auto-correlation length (ACL). The optimal ACL is nearly not influenced by system's visibility, and is only related to phantom's property, i.e., scattering material's size and phantom's absorption. For our phantom, the optimal ACL is about 0.21 {\mu}m. As for system geometry, larger source-detector and isocenter-detector distance can increase the system's maximal ACL, helping the system meet the optimal ACL more easily. Domain decomposition provides an effective way to tackle the dilemma of physics-informed neural networks (PINN) which struggle to accurately and efficiently solve partial differential equations (PDEs) in the whole domain, but the lack of efficient tools for dealing with the interfaces between two adjacent sub-domains heavily hinders the training effects, even leads to the discontinuity of the learned solutions. In this paper, we propose a symmetry group based domain decomposition strategy to enhance the PINN for solving the forward and inverse problems of the PDEs possessing a Lie symmetry group. Specifically, for the forward problem, we first deploy the symmetry group to generate the dividing-lines having known solution information which can be adjusted flexibly and are used to divide the whole training domain into a finite number of non-overlapping sub-domains, then utilize the PINN and the symmetry-enhanced PINN methods to learn the solutions in each sub-domain and finally stitch them to the overall solution of PDEs. For the inverse problem, we first utilize the symmetry group acting on the data of the initial and boundary conditions to generate labeled data in the interior domain of PDEs and then find the undetermined parameters as well as the solution by only training the neural networks in a sub-domain. Consequently, the proposed method can predict high-accuracy solutions of PDEs which are failed by the vanilla PINN in the whole domain and the extended physics-informed neural network in the same sub-domains. Numerical results of the Korteweg-de Vries equation with a translation symmetry and the nonlinear viscous fluid equation with a scaling symmetry show that the accuracies of the learned solutions are improved largely.

Blind Compressed Image Restoration (CIR) has garnered significant attention due to its practical applications. It aims to mitigate compression artifacts caused by unknown quality factors, particularly with JPEG codecs. Existing works on blind CIR often seek assistance from a quality factor prediction network to facilitate their network to restore compressed images. However, the predicted numerical quality factor lacks spatial information, preventing network adaptability toward image contents. Recent studies in prompt-learning-based image restoration have showcased the potential of prompts to generalize across varied degradation types and degrees. This motivated us to design a prompt-learning-based compressed image restoration network, dubbed PromptCIR, which can effectively restore images from various compress levels. Specifically, PromptCIR exploits prompts to encode compression information implicitly, where prompts directly interact with soft weights generated from image features, thus providing dynamic content-aware and distortion-aware guidance for the restoration process. The light-weight prompts enable our method to adapt to different compression levels, while introducing minimal parameter overhead. Overall, PromptCIR leverages the powerful transformer-based backbone with the dynamic prompt module to proficiently handle blind CIR tasks, winning first place in the NTIRE 2024 challenge of blind compressed image enhancement track. With the advent of virtual reality technology, omnidirectional image (ODI) rescaling techniques are increasingly embraced for reducing transmitted and stored file sizes while preserving high image quality. Despite this progress, current ODI rescaling methods predominantly focus on enhancing the quality of images in equirectangular projection (ERP) format, which overlooks the fact that the content viewed on head mounted displays (HMDs) is actually a rendered viewport instead of an ERP image. In this work, we emphasize that focusing solely on ERP quality results in inferior viewport visual experiences for users. Thus, we propose ResVR, which is the first comprehensive framework for the joint Rescaling and Viewport Rendering of ODIs. ResVR allows obtaining LR ERP images for transmission while rendering high-quality viewports for users to watch on HMDs. In our ResVR, a novel discrete pixel sampling strategy is developed to tackle the complex mapping between the viewport and ERP, enabling end-to-end training of ResVR pipeline. Furthermore, a spherical pixel shape representation technique is innovatively derived from spherical differentiation to significantly improve the visual quality of rendered viewports. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our ResVR outperforms existing methods in viewport rendering tasks across different fields of view, resolutions, and view directions while keeping a low transmission overhead.

Emotion decoding using Electroencephalography (EEG)-based affective brain-computer interfaces represents a significant area within the field of affective computing. In the present study, we propose a novel non-deep transfer learning method, termed as Manifold-based Domain adaptation with Dynamic Distribution (MDDD). The proposed MDDD includes four main modules: manifold feature transformation, dynamic distribution alignment, classifier learning, and ensemble learning. The data undergoes a transformation onto an optimal Grassmann manifold space, enabling dynamic alignment of the source and target domains. This process prioritizes both marginal and conditional distributions according to their significance, ensuring enhanced adaptation efficiency across various types of data. In the classifier learning, the principle of structural risk minimization is integrated to develop robust classification models. This is complemented by dynamic distribution alignment, which refines the classifier iteratively. Additionally, the ensemble learning module aggregates the classifiers obtained at different stages of the optimization process, which leverages the diversity of the classifiers to enhance the overall prediction accuracy. The experimental results indicate that MDDD outperforms traditional non-deep learning methods, achieving an average improvement of 3.54%, and is comparable to deep learning methods. This suggests that MDDD could be a promising method for enhancing the utility and applicability of aBCIs in real-world scenarios.

We introduce phi-3-mini, a 3.8 billion parameter language model trained on 3.3 trillion tokens, whose overall performance, as measured by both academic benchmarks and internal testing, rivals that of models such as Mixtral 8x7B and GPT-3.5 (e.g., phi-3-mini achieves 69% on MMLU and 8.38 on MT-bench), despite being small enough to be deployed on a phone. The innovation lies entirely in our dataset for training, a scaled-up version of the one used for phi-2, composed of heavily filtered publicly available web data and synthetic data. The model is also further aligned for robustness, safety, and chat format. We also provide some initial parameter-scaling results with a 7B and 14B models trained for 4.8T tokens, called phi-3-small and phi-3-medium, both significantly more capable than phi-3-mini (e.g., respectively 75% and 78% on MMLU, and 8.7 and 8.9 on MT-bench). We present the design and characterization of the first full chain precision timing prototype ASIC, named ETL Readout Chip version 1 (ETROC1) for the CMS MTD endcap timing layer (ETL) upgrade. The ETL utilizes Low Gain Avalanche Diode (LGAD) sensors to detect charged particles, with the goal to achieve a time resolution of 40 - 50 ps per hit, and 30 - 40 ps per track with hits from two detector layers. The ETROC1 is composed of a 5 x 5 pixel array and peripheral circuits. The pixel array includes a 4 x 4 active pixel array with an H-tree shaped network delivering clock and charge injection signals. Each active pixel is composed of various components, including a bump pad, a charge injection circuit, a pre-amplifier, a discriminator, a digital-to-analog converter, and a time-to-digital converter. These components play essential roles as the front-end link in processing LGAD signals and measuring timing-related information. The peripheral circuits provide clock signals and readout functionalities. The size of the ETROC1 chip is 7 mm x 9 mm. ETROC1 has been fabricated in a 65 nm CMOS process, and extensively tested under stimuli of charge injection, infrared laser, and proton beam. The challenges associated with using pre-trained models (PTMs) have not been specifically investigated, which hampers their effective utilization. To address this knowledge gap, we collected and analyzed a dataset of 5,896 PTM-related questions on Stack Overflow. We first analyze the popularity and difficulty trends of PTM-related questions. We find that PTM-related questions are becoming more and more popular over time. However, it is noteworthy that PTM-related questions not only have a lower response rate but also exhibit a longer response time compared to many well-researched topics in software engineering. This observation emphasizes the significant difficulty and complexity associated with the practical application of PTMs. To delve into the specific challenges, we manually annotate 430 PTM-related questions, categorizing them into a hierarchical taxonomy of 42 codes (i.e., leaf nodes) and three categories. This taxonomy encompasses many PTM prominent challenges such as fine-tuning, output understanding, and prompt customization, which reflects the gaps between current techniques and practical needs. We discuss the implications of our study for PTM practitioners, vendors, and educators, and suggest possible directions and solutions for future research., Comment: SANER 2024

Lane detection has evolved highly functional autonomous driving system to understand driving scenes even under complex environments. In this paper, we work towards developing a generalized computer vision system able to detect lanes without using any annotation. We make the following contributions: (i) We illustrate how to perform unsupervised 3D lane segmentation by leveraging the distinctive intensity of lanes on the LiDAR point cloud frames, and then obtain the noisy lane labels in the 2D plane by projecting the 3D points; (ii) We propose a novel self-supervised training scheme, dubbed LaneCorrect, that automatically corrects the lane label by learning geometric consistency and instance awareness from the adversarial augmentations; (iii) With the self-supervised pre-trained model, we distill to train a student network for arbitrary target lane (e.g., TuSimple) detection without any human labels; (iv) We thoroughly evaluate our self-supervised method on four major lane detection benchmarks (including TuSimple, CULane, CurveLanes and LLAMAS) and demonstrate excellent performance compared with existing supervised counterpart, whilst showing more effective results on alleviating the domain gap, i.e., training on CULane and test on TuSimple.

Crystal seeding enables a deeper understanding of phase behavior, leading to the development of methods for controlling and manipulating phase transitions in various applications such as materials synthesis, crystallization processes, and phase transformation engineering. How to seed a crystalline in time domain is an open question, which is of great significant and may provide an avenue to understand and control time-dependent quantum many-body physics. Here, we utilize a microwave pulse as a seed to induce the formation of a discrete time crystal in Floquet driven Rydberg atoms. In the experiment, the periodic driving on Rydberg states acts as a seeded crystalline order in subspace, which triggers the time-translation symmetry breaking across the entire ensemble. The behavior of the emergent time crystal is elaborately linked to alterations in the seed, such as the relative phase shift and the frequency difference, which result in phase dependent seeding and corresponding shift in periodicity of the time crystal, leading to embryonic synchronization. This result opens up new possibilities for studying and harnessing time-dependent quantum many-body phenomena, offering insights into the behavior of complex many-body systems under seeding.

Recent In-IDE AI coding assistant tools (ACATs) like GitHub Copilot have significantly impacted developers' coding habits. While some studies have examined their effectiveness, there lacks in-depth investigation into the actual assistance process. To bridge this gap, we simulate real development scenarios encompassing three typical types of software development tasks and recruit 27 computer science students to investigate their behavior with three popular ACATs. Our goal is to comprehensively assess ACATs' effectiveness, explore characteristics of recommended code, identify reasons for modifications, and understand users' challenges and expectations. To facilitate the study, we develop an experimental platform that includes a data collection plugin for VSCode IDE and provides functions for screen recording, code evaluation, and automatic generation of personalized interview and survey questions. Through analysis of the collected data, we find that ACATs generally enhance task completion rates, reduce time, improve code quality, and increase self-perceived productivity. However, the improvement is influenced by both the nature of coding tasks and users' experience level. Notably, for experienced participants, the use of ACATs may even increase completion time. We observe that "edited line completion" is the most frequently recommended way, while "comments completion" and "string completion" have the lowest acceptance rates. The primary reasons for modifying recommended code are disparities between output formats and requirements, flawed logic, and inconsistent code styles. In terms of challenges and expectations, optimization of service access and help documentation is also concerned by participants except for functionality and performance. Our study provides valuable insights into the effectiveness and usability of ACATs, informing further improvements in their design and implementation.
