1. Fermion-fermion interaction driven phase transitions in the rhombohedral trilayer graphene

Abstract

The effects of short-range fermion-fermion interactions on the low-energy properties of the rhombohedral trilayer graphene are comprehensively investigated by virtue of the momentum-shell renormalization group method. We take into account all one-loop corrections and establish the energy-dependent coupled evolutions of independent fermionic couplings that carry the physical information stemming from the interplay of various fermion-fermion interactions. With the help of the detailed numerical analysis, we notice that the ferocious competition among all fermion-fermion interactions can drive fermionic couplings to four distinct kinds of fixed points, dubbed $\textrm{FP}_{1}$, $\textrm{FP}_{2}$, $\textrm{FP}_{3}$ and $\textrm{FP}_{4}$, in the interaction-parameter space. Such fixed points principally dictate the fate of the system in the low-energy regime, which are always associated with some instabilities with specific symmetry breakings and thus accompanied by certain phase transitions. In order to judge the favorable states arising from the potential phase transitions, we bring out a number of fermion-bilinear source terms to characterize the underlying candidate states. By comparing their related susceptibilities, it is determined that the dominant states correspond to a spin-singlet superconductivity, a spin-triplet pair-density-wave, and a spin-triplet superconductivity for approaching the fixed points $\textrm{FP}_{1,3}$, $\textrm{FP}_{2}$, and $\textrm{FP}_{4}$, respectively. 2. Comet: A Communication-efficient and Performant Approximation for Private Transformer Inference

Abstract

The prevalent use of Transformer-like models, exemplified by ChatGPT in modern language processing applications, underscores the critical need for enabling private inference essential for many cloud-based services reliant on such models. However, current privacy-preserving frameworks impose significant communication burden, especially for non-linear computation in Transformer model. In this paper, we introduce a novel plug-in method Comet to effectively reduce the communication cost without compromising the inference performance. We second introduce an efficient approximation method to eliminate the heavy communication in finding good initial approximation. We evaluate our Comet on Bert and RoBERTa models with GLUE benchmark datasets, showing up to 3.9$\times$ less communication and 3.5$\times$ speedups while keep competitive model performance compared to the prior art.

Abstract

In this report, we introduce the Gemini 1.5 family of models, representing the next generation of highly compute-efficient multimodal models capable of recalling and reasoning over fine-grained information from millions of tokens of context, including multiple long documents and hours of video and audio. The family includes two new models: (1) an updated Gemini 1.5 Pro, which exceeds the February version on the great majority of capabilities and benchmarks; (2) Gemini 1.5 Flash, a more lightweight variant designed for efficiency with minimal regression in quality. Gemini 1.5 models achieve near-perfect recall on long-context retrieval tasks across modalities, improve the state-of-the-art in long-document QA, long-video QA and long-context ASR, and match or surpass Gemini 1.0 Ultra's state-of-the-art performance across a broad set of benchmarks. Studying the limits of Gemini 1.5's long-context ability, we find continued improvement in next-token prediction and near-perfect retrieval (>99%) up to at least 10M tokens, a generational leap over existing models such as Claude 3.0 (200k) and GPT-4 Turbo (128k). Finally, we highlight real-world use cases, such as Gemini 1.5 collaborating with professionals on completing their tasks achieving 26 to 75% time savings across 10 different job categories, as well as surprising new capabilities of large language models at the frontier; when given a grammar manual for Kalamang, a language with fewer than 200 speakers worldwide, the model learns to translate English to Kalamang at a similar level to a person who learned from the same content.

Abstract

Detecting elevated intracranial pressure (ICP) is crucial in diagnosing and managing various neurological conditions. These fluctuations in pressure are transmitted to the optic nerve sheath (ONS), resulting in changes to its diameter, which can then be detected using ultrasound imaging devices. However, interpreting sonographic images of the ONS can be challenging. In this work, we propose two systems that actively monitor the ONS diameter throughout an ultrasound video and make a final prediction as to whether ICP is elevated. To construct our systems, we leverage subject matter expert (SME) guidance, structuring our processing pipeline according to their collection procedure, while also prioritizing interpretability and computational efficiency. We conduct a number of experiments, demonstrating that our proposed systems are able to outperform various baselines. Abstract

This report introduces a new family of multimodal models, Gemini, that exhibit remarkable capabilities across image, audio, video, and text understanding. The Gemini family consists of Ultra, Pro, and Nano sizes, suitable for applications ranging from complex reasoning tasks to on-device memory-constrained use-cases. Evaluation on a broad range of benchmarks shows that our most-capable Gemini Ultra model advances the state of the art in 30 of 32 of these benchmarks - notably being the first model to achieve human-expert performance on the well-studied exam benchmark MMLU, and improving the state of the art in every one of the 20 multimodal benchmarks we examined. We believe that the new capabilities of the Gemini family in cross-modal reasoning and language understanding will enable a wide variety of use cases. We discuss our approach toward post-training and deploying Gemini models responsibly to users through services including Gemini, Gemini Advanced, Google AI Studio, and Cloud Vertex AI.

Abstract

Let $M$ be a commutative monoid. The monoid $M$ is called atomic if every non-invertible element of $M$ factors into atoms (i.e., irreducible elements), while $M$ is called a Furstenberg monoid if every non-invertible element of $M$ is divisible by an atom. Additive submonoids of $\mathbb{Q}$ consisting of nonnegative rationals are called Puiseux monoids, and their atomic structure has been actively studied during the past few years. The primary purpose of this paper is to investigate the property of being Furstenberg in the context of Puiseux monoids. In this direction, we consider some properties weaker than being Furstenberg, and then we connect these properties with some atomic results which have been already established for Puiseux monoids., Comment: 17 pages

Abstract

A network for the transportation of supplies can be described as a rooted tree with a weight of a degree of congestion for each edge. We take the sum of root-leaf distance (SRD) on a rooted tree as the whole degree of congestion of the tree. Hence, we consider the SRD interdiction problem on trees with cardinality constraint by upgrading edges (denoted by (SDIPTC) in brief). It aims to maximize the SRD by upgrading the weights of $N$ critical edges such that the total upgrade cost under some measurement is upper-bounded by a given value. The relevant minimum cost problem (MCSDIPTC) aims to minimize the total upgrade cost on the premise that the SRD is lower-bounded by a given value. We develop two different norms including weighted $l_\infty$ norm and weighted bottleneck Hamming distance to measure the upgrade cost. We propose two binary search algorithms within O($n\log n$) time for the problems (SDIPTC) under the two norms, respectively. For problems (MCSDIPTC),we propose two binary search algorithms within O($N n^2$) and O($n \log n$) under weighted $l_\infty$ norm and weighted bottleneck Hamming distance, respectively. These problems are solved through their subproblems (SDIPT) and (MCSDIPT), in which we ignore the cardinality constraint on the number of upgraded edges. Finally, we design numerical experiments to show the effectiveness of these algorithms.

18. Critical fates induced by the interaction competition in three-dimensional tilted Dirac semimetals

Abstract

The interplay among Coulomb interaction, electron-phonon coupling, and phonon-phonon coupling has a significant impact on the low-energy behavior of three-dimensional type-I tilted Dirac semimetals. To investigate this phenomenon, we construct an effective theory, calculate one-loop corrections arising from all these interactions, and establish the coupled energy-dependent flows of all associated interaction parameters by adopting the renormalization group approach. Deciphering such coupled evolutions allows us to determine a series of low-energy critical properties for these materials. At first, we present the low-energy tendencies of all interaction parameters. The tilting parameter exhibits distinct tendencies that depend heavily upon the initial anisotropy of fermion velocities. In comparison, the latter is mainly dominated by its initial value but is less sensitive to the former. Variations in these two quantities drive certain interaction parameters toward the strong anisotropy in the low energy regime, indicating the screened interaction in specific directions, and others toward an approximate isotropy. Additionally, we observe that the tendencies of interaction parameters can be qualitatively clustered into three distinct types of fixed points, accompanied by the potential instabilities that induce certain interaction-driven phase transition. Furthermore, approaching these fixed points leads to the critical behavior of physical quantities, such as the density of states, compressibility, and specific heat, which exhibit quite different from their non-interacting counterparts and even deviate slightly from Fermi-liquid behavior. Abstract

We introduce PaLM 2, a new state-of-the-art language model that has better multilingual and reasoning capabilities and is more compute-efficient than its predecessor PaLM. PaLM 2 is a Transformer-based model trained using a mixture of objectives. Through extensive evaluations on English and multilingual language, and reasoning tasks, we demonstrate that PaLM 2 has significantly improved quality on downstream tasks across different model sizes, while simultaneously exhibiting faster and more efficient inference compared to PaLM. This improved efficiency enables broader deployment while also allowing the model to respond faster, for a more natural pace of interaction. PaLM 2 demonstrates robust reasoning capabilities exemplified by large improvements over PaLM on BIG-Bench and other reasoning tasks. PaLM 2 exhibits stable performance on a suite of responsible AI evaluations, and enables inference-time control over toxicity without additional overhead or impact on other capabilities. Overall, PaLM 2 achieves state-of-the-art performance across a diverse set of tasks and capabilities. When discussing the PaLM 2 family, it is important to distinguish between pre-trained models (of various sizes), fine-tuned variants of these models, and the user-facing products that use these models. In particular, user-facing products typically include additional pre- and post-processing steps. Additionally, the underlying models may evolve over time. Therefore, one should not expect the performance of user-facing products to exactly match the results reported in this report.

Abstract

Abstract The exploration of post-Lithium (Li) metals, such as Sodium (Na), Potassium (K), Magnesium (Mg), Calcium (Ca), Aluminum (Al), and Zinc (Zn), for electrochemical energy storage has been driven by the limited availability of Li and the higher theoretical specific energies compared to the state-of-the-art Li-ion batteries. Post-Li metal||S batteries have emerged as a promising system for practical applications. Yet, the insufficient understanding of quantitative cell parameters and the mechanisms of sulfur electrocatalytic conversion hinder the advancement of these battery technologies. This perspective offers a comprehensive analysis of electrode parameters, including S mass loading, S content, electrolyte/S ratio, and negative/positive electrode capacity ratio, in establishing the specific energy (Wh kg−1) of post-Li metal||S batteries. Additionally, we critically evaluate the progress in investigating electrochemical sulfur conversion via homogeneous and heterogeneous electrocatalytic approaches in both non-aqueous Na/K/Mg/Ca/Al||S and aqueous Zn||S batteries. Lastly, we provide a critical outlook on potential research directions for designing practical post-Li metal||S batteries.

Abstract

Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) refers to clinician-performed and interpreted ultrasonography at the patient's bedside. Interpreting these images requires a high level of expertise, which may not be available during emergencies. In this paper, we support POCUS by developing classifiers that can aid medical professionals by diagnosing whether or not a patient has pneumothorax. We decomposed the task into multiple steps, using YOLOv4 to extract relevant regions of the video and a 3D sparse coding model to represent video features. Given the difficulty in acquiring positive training videos, we trained a small-data classifier with a maximum of 15 positive and 32 negative examples. To counteract this limitation, we leveraged subject matter expert (SME) knowledge to limit the hypothesis space, thus reducing the cost of data collection. We present results using two lung ultrasound datasets and demonstrate that our model is capable of achieving performance on par with SMEs in pneumothorax identification. We then developed an iOS application that runs our full system in less than 4 seconds on an iPad Pro, and less than 8 seconds on an iPhone 13 Pro, labeling key regions in the lung sonogram to provide interpretable diagnoses., Comment: IAAI 2023 (7 pages)

Let $F$ be a number field, and let $\pi_1$ and $\pi_2$ be distinct unitary cuspidal automorphic representations of $\operatorname{GL}_{n_1}(\mathbb{A}_F)$ and $\operatorname{GL}_{n_2}(\mathbb{A}_F)$ respectively. 44. Joint Linear and Nonlinear Computation across Functions for Efficient Privacy-Preserving Neural Network Inference

Abstract

While it is encouraging to witness the recent development in privacy-preserving Machine Learning as a Service (MLaaS), there still exists a significant performance gap for its deployment in real-world applications. We observe the state-of-the-art frameworks follow a compute-and-share principle for every function output where the summing in linear functions, which is the last of two steps for function output, involves all rotations (which is the most expensive HE operation), and the multiplexing in nonlinear functions, which is also the last of two steps for function output, introduces noticeable communication rounds. Therefore, we challenge the conventional compute-and-share logic and introduce the first joint linear and nonlinear computation across functions that features by 1) the PHE triplet for computing the nonlinear function, with which the multiplexing is eliminated; 2) the matrix encoding to calculate the linear function, with which all rotations for summing is removed; and 3) the network adaptation to reassemble the model structure, with which the joint computation module is utilized as much as possible. The boosted efficiency is verified by the numerical complexity, and the experiments demonstrate up to 13x speedup for various functions used in the state-of-the-art models and up to 5x speedup over mainstream neural networks.

Abstract

We report a high-responsive hot-electron photodetector based on the integration of an Au-MoS$_2$ junction with a silicon nitride microring resonator (MRR) for detecting telecom-band light. The coupling of the evanescent field of the silicon nitride MRR with the Au-MoS$_2$ Schottky junction region enhances the hot-electron injection efficiency. The device exhibits a high responsivity of 154.6 mA W-1 at the wavelength of 1516 nm, and the moderately uniform responsivities are obtained over the wavelength range of 1500 nm-1630 nm. Abstract

Computer-aided diagnosis for medical imaging is a well-studied field that aims to provide real-time decision support systems for physicians. These systems attempt to detect and diagnose a plethora of medical conditions across a variety of image diagnostic technologies including ultrasound, x-ray, MRI, and CT. When designing AI models for these systems, we are often limited by little training data, and for rare medical conditions, positive examples are difficult to obtain. These issues often cause models to perform poorly, so we needed a way to design an AI model in light of these limitations. Thus, our approach was to incorporate expert domain knowledge into the design of an AI model. We conducted two qualitative think-aloud studies with doctors trained in the interpretation of lung ultrasound diagnosis to extract relevant domain knowledge for the condition Pneumothorax. We extracted knowledge of key features and procedures used to make a diagnosis. 49. Going Online: A Simulated Student Approach for Evaluating Knowledge Tracing in the Context of Mastery Learning

Abstract

Knowledge tracing algorithms are embedded in Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS) to keep track of students' learning process. While knowledge tracing models have been extensively studied in offline settings, very little work has explored their use in online settings. This is primarily because conducting experiments to evaluate and select knowledge tracing models in classroom settings is expensive. To fill this gap, we introduce a novel way of using machinelearning models to generate simulated students. We conduct experiments using agents generated by the Apprentice Learner Architecture to investigate the online use of different knowledge tracing models (Bayesian Knowledge Tracing, the Streak model, and Deep Knowledge Tracing). An analysis of our simulation results revealed an error in the initial implementation of our Bayesian knowledge tracing model that was not identified in our previous work. Our simulations also revealed a more fundamental limitation of Deep Knowledge Tracing that prevents the model from supporting mastery learning on multi-step problems. Together, these two findings suggest that Apprentice agents provide a practical means of evaluating knowledge tracing models prior to more costly classroom testing. Lastly, our analysis identifies a positive correlation between the Bayesian knowledge tracing parameters estimated from human data and the parameters estimated from simulated learners. This suggests that model parameters might be initialized using simulated data when no human-student data is yet available. [For the full proceedings, see ED615472.]
