Rice production is threatened by multiple pathogens. Breeding cultivars with broad-spectrum disease resistance is necessary to maintain and improve crop production. Previously we found that overexpression of miR160a enhanced rice blast disease resistance. However, it is unclear whether miR160a also regulates resistance against other pathogens, and what the downstream signaling pathways are. Here, we demonstrate that miR160a positively regulates broad-spectrum resistance against the causative agents of blast, leaf blight and sheath blight in rice. Mutations of miR160a-targeted Auxin Response Factors result in different alteration of resistance conferred by miR160a. miR160a enhances disease resistance partially by suppressing ARF8, as mutation of ARF8 in MIM160 background partially restores the compromised resistance resulting from MIM160. ARF8 protein binds directly to the promoter and suppresses the expression of WRKY45, which acts as a positive regulator of rice immunity. Mutation of WRKY45 compromises the enhanced blast resistance and bacterial leaf blight resistance conferred by arf8 mutant. Overall, our results reveal that a microRNA coordinates rice broad-spectrum disease resistance by suppressing multiple target genes that play different roles in disease resistance, and uncover a new regulatory pathway mediated by the miR160a-ARF8 module. These findings provide new resources to potentially improve disease resistance for breeding in rice.

Targeted delivery of drugs to tumor cells, which circumvent resistance mechanisms and induce cell killing, is a lingering challenge that requires innovative solutions. Here, we provide two bioengineered strategies in which nanotechnology is blended with cancer medicine to preferentially target distinct mechanisms of drug resistance. In the first ‘case study’, we demonstrate the use of lipid–drug conjugates that target molecular signaling pathways, which result from taxane-induced drug tolerance via cell surface lipid raft accumulations. Through a small molecule drug screen, we identify a kinase inhibitor that optimally destroys drug tolerant cancer cells and conjugate it to a rationally-chosen lipid scaffold, which enhances anticancer efficacy in vitro and in vivo. In the second ‘case study’, we address resistance mechanisms that can occur through exocytosis of nanomedicines. Using adenocarcinoma HeLa and MCF-7 cells, we describe the use of gold nanorod and nanoporous vehicles integrated with an optical antenna for on-demand, photoactivation at ∼650 nm enabling release of payloads into cells including cytotoxic anthracyclines. Together, these provide two approaches, which exploit engineering strategies capable of circumventing distinct resistance barriers and induce killing by multimodal, including nanophotonic mechanisms.

This study was performed to introduce a modified procedure involving a combination of bilateral vocal fold mucosal flaps and microsurgical sutures for the management of anterior glottic webs and to study its efficacy in decreasing the recurrence rate and improving voice quality.We retrospectively reviewed 102 patients with anterior glottic webs who underwent surgical treatment by a carbon dioxide laser incision with or without microsurgical suturing in our hospital from May 2014 to April 2021. We focused on the reoperation rate and the voice outcomes based on the 30-item Voice Handicap Index.This study included 102 patients with anterior glottic webs, which were caused by papilloma excision and endoscopic laryngocarcinoma resection in 97 (95.1%) of the 102 patients; less common causes were infection and traumatic injury. All incisions were performed along the midline with a carbon dioxide laser under microscopy and a self-retaining laryngoscope; 37 (36.3%) patients underwent microsurgical suturing and 65 (63.7%) patients did not. The microsuture group had a lower reoperation rate (χWe introduced a modified procedure that can both decrease the recurrence rate and improve the voice quality in patients with anterior glottic webs. Hence, this combination therapy involving bilateral vocal fold mucosal flaps and microsurgical sutures is worthy of clinical application and promotion.

Ferritin is the most important iron storage form and is known to influence tumor immunity. We previously showed that expression of ferritin light chain (FTL) and ferritin heavy chain (FTH1) subunits is increased in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSC). Here, we analyzed solid tumor datasets from The Cancer Genome Atlas and Genotype-Tissue Expression databases to investigate correlations between FTL and FTH1 expressions and (i) patient survival, using univariate, multivariate, Kaplan-Meier and Receiver Operator Characteristic analysis; and (ii) tumor-infiltrating immune cell subsets, using the bioinformatics tools Estimation of Stomal and Immune cells in Malignant Tumor tissues, Microenvironment Cell Population-counter, Tumor Immune Estimation Resource, and Tumor Immunology Miner. We found that FTL and FTH1 are upregulated and downregulated, respectively, in most of the human cancers analyzed. Tumor FTL levels were associated with prognosis in patients with lower grade glioma (LGG), whereas FTH1 levels were associated with prognosis in patients with liver hepatocellular carcinoma, HNSC, LGG, and kidney renal papillary cell carcinoma. In many cancers, FTL and FTH1 levels was significantly positively correlated with tumor infiltration by tumor-associated macrophages and T regulatory cells. These results suggest an important role for FTL and FTH1 in regulating tumor immunity to solid cancers.

Regional metastasis is an important prognostic factor for patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Neuromedin U (Nmu) is a secreted neuropeptide, named due to its potent uterine contraction‑inducing activity. The aim of the present study was to analyze the significance of Nmu in the regional metastasis of HNSCC. The characteristics of 240 patients recruited from the Department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University (Wuhan, China) were summarized retrospectively. The positive rate of neck dissection was analyzed according to the material. The expression levels of Nmu in human tumor samples were analyzed using immunohistochemistry. Subsequently, the expression of Nmu was investigated using a tissue microassay to analyze the association between Nmu protein expression and Tumor Node Metastasis (TNM) status. The positive rate of neck dissection was 51.4% in the study sample. The expression levels of Nmu in primary tumors with regional metastasis were higher, compared with those without metastasis. There was increased protein expression of Nmu in the advanced tumor tissues. The data obtained in the present study demonstrated that the expression of Nmu was correlated with regional metastasis and TNM status. Overexpression of Nmu may be involved in the process of regional metastasis of HNSCC, and may serve as a novel and valuable biomarker for predicting regional metastasis in patients with HNSCC.

First-principles calculations of plane wave ultra-soft pseudo-potential method based on the density functional theory (DFT) were used to study lattice constants, band structure, density of states and optical properties of wurtzite InxGa1-xN alloys. The calculated results indicate that the lattice constant gradually increases, the conduction band shifts to low energy direction and the band gap becomes narrower with the increase in In-doped concentration. Meanwhile, the dielectric function moves towards low energy direction, which is red-shift. The first dielectric peak appears near 2.0 eV, and the maximum dielectric peak close to 4.76 eV is found. There are two intersection points at about 5.6 and 9.2 eV. When the photon energy is less than 5.6 eV or higher than about 9.2 eV, the absorption coefficient of InxGa1-xN in low doping concentration (less than 50%) is smaller than that of high doping concentration of InxGa1-xN. However, when the photon energy is located between 5.6 and 9.2 eV, the absorption spectra of InxGa1-xN in low doping concentration are greater than those of high doping concentration. Therefore, the study result shows that InxGa1-xN alloys can be applied as solar cell and the transparent conductive materials.

The structure electronic and optical properties of rutile-type SnO2 were studied based on plane-wave pseudopotential density functional theory (DFT) adopting GGA, LDA, B3LYP and PBE0, respectively. The computing results show that the properties calculated by GGA and LDA are very close, which correspond to those by ultra-soft pseudopotential and norm conserving pseudopotential, respectively, and the properties calculated by B3LYP are near to those by PBE0. The band gap obtained from B3LYP and PBE0 is much more consistent with the available experimental data than that from GGA and LDA, whose band gap calculated by norm conserving pseudopotential is bigger than that by ultra-soft pseudopotential. However, the density of state and optical properties calculated from every type are basically similar in qualitative analysis, and the numerical values have a little difference. From the whole results calculated by the six methods, we can see that the structure, electronic and optical properties of rutile-type SnO2 calculated by B3LYP and PBEO are more near to the available experimental data than those by other methods.

The continuous cooling transformation (CCT) behavior of a Ti attached steel was studied through thermal simulation tests, and the influences of different cooling rates on the microstructure and transformation were investigated. The results show that the microstructure changes with the cooling rate, and the CCT curve of studied steel is plotted, which indicates that the solid-state phase transformation mainly consists of four regions. The CCT diagram made it possible to predict the microstructures of studied steel with different cooling rates.

The CCT curve of a C-Si-Mn steel was investigated. The hot simulation tests at different cooling rates were conducted on Gleeble-1500 simulator and microstructures were observed. Based on transformation temperatures recorded by dilation curves and microstructures, the CCT curve diagram for tested steel was plotted. The effects of cooling rate on microstructure and transformation temperature were studied. The results provide the theoretical basis for determination of hot processing and heat treatment technology of C-Si-Mn steels.

The growth rates of bainite plates in an Fe-C-Mn-Si superbainitic steel were investigated by in situ observation. The lengthening rates of ferrite bainite during both cooling and isothermal holding processes were observed and the growth rates of bainite plates nucleating at grain boundaries, within grains and on preformed bainite were measured. It is indicated that the lengthening rates of bainite plates during the cooling and isothermal processes were different, and that the growth rates of bainite plates nucleating at different types of sites also demonstrated diversity. The bainite plates initiating at grain boundaries during cooling grew the fastest, while the plates nucleating on preformed bainite did the slowest. However, the growth rate of the bainite plates nucleating at grain boundaries during isothermal transformation decreased the most, whereas the bainite plates initiating within grains grew the fastest. In addition, the growth rate of ferrite bainite in the study supported the diffusion transformation mechanism of bainite from the viewpoint of growth rate.

The precipitation in continuously casting slabs of a Ti-Nb microalloyed steel was studied. The samples were taken from different places along cross section of slabs and the precipitations were observed by TEM. The results show that the centre area of slab contains more precipitates of Ti-Nb and carbonitrides more uniformly distribute in the centre along thickness direction. Moreover, the precipitates in the middle are more than those in the edge along width direction of slab. Some large carbonitrides exist in the middle of slab because the temperature in the middle is higher during slab cooling resulting in the large precipitates. The study provides the basis for understanding the precipitation in slabs of Ti-Nb microalloyed steels.

Using the first-principles calculations, we studied the geometric structures, electronic structures and optical properties of the single-walled (n, 0) ZnO nanotubes (NTs). The calculated results show that all the bind energies of the single-walled (n, 0) ZnO NTs are of negative values, which indicate that the ZnO NTs can exist stably as single-walled NTs. While the calculated results of electronic structure indicate that the single-walled (n, 0) ZnO NTs are a type of direct wide band-gap semiconductor materials, the whole valence bands are spread and drift to low-energy direction with the increase of the NT diameter. The defect energy levels caused by quantum size and surface effects emerge on the top of the valence bands. Furthermore, the calculated results of optical properties reveal that the dielectric peaks have a blue shift and the edge of absorption band corresponds to ultraviolet band with the decrease of the NT diameter. The single-walled (n, 0) ZnO NTs can be applied to ultraviolet semiconductor systems.

Based on spin-polarized density functional theory we studied the electronic structures, magnetic and optical properties of Ni-doped ZnO nanowires. The magnetic results show that three magnetic coupling states are present: ferromagnetic (FM), antiferromagnetic (AFM), and paramagnetic (PM) states for the six kinds of Ni-doped configurations. The calculated energy results indicate that antiferromagnetic coupling is more stable when Ni atoms substitute for Zn atoms in the ZnO nanowires on the outside surface along the (0001) direction. AFM coupling has a metallic nature. The FM results from the density of states show that the spin polarization phenomenon appears near the Fermi level and causes strong hybridization between Ni 3d and O 2p. Moreover, the magnetic moments mainly originate from the unpaired electrons of the Ni 3d orbitals and the electrons of the O 2p orbitals contribute a little to the magnetic moments. The coupling of FM has a half-metal nature. In addition, the optical properties indicate that the absorption peaks show a significant red shift and good emission in the far UV band while a blue shift is apparent for the near UV band (380 nm). These results indicate that the Ni-doped ZnO nanowires are promising magneto-optical electronic materials and they can be used for nanoscale spintronics device materials.

The geometric, energetic, electronic structures and optical properties of ZnO nanowires (NWs) with hexagonal cross sections are investigated by using the first-principles calculation of plane wave ultra-soft pseudo-potential technology based on the density functional theory (DFT). The calculated results reveal that the initial Zn-O double layers merge into single layers after structural relaxations, the band gap and binding energies decrease with the increase of the ZnO nanowire size. Those properties show great dimension and size dependence. It is also found that the dielectric functions of ZnO NWs have different peaks with respect to light polarization, and the peaks of ZnO NWs exhibit a significant blueshift in comparison with those of bulk ZnO. Our results gives some reference to the thorough understanding of optical properties of ZnO, and also enables more precise monitoring and controlling during the growth of ZnO materials to be possible.

The geometric structure, electronic structure, optical properties and the formation energy of Sb-doped ZnO with the wurtzite structure are investigated using the first-principles ultra-soft pseudo-potential approach of plane wave based upon the density functional theory. The calculated results indicate that the volume of ZnO doped with Sb becomes larger, and the doping system yields the lowest formation energy of Sb on the interstitial site and the oxygen site. Furthermore, Sb dopant first occupies the octahedral oxygen sites of the wurtzite structure. It is found that Sb substituting on oxygen site behaves as a deep acceptor and shows the p-type degenerate semiconductor character. After doping, the electron density difference demonstrates the considerable electron charge density redistribution, which induces the effect of Sb-doped ZnO to increase the charge overlap between atoms. The density of states move towards lower energy and the optical band gap is broadened. Our calculated results are in agreement with other experimental results and could make more precise monitoring and controlling possible during the growth of ZnO p-type materials.

According to the spin-polarized density functional theory, we study the electronic structures, the magnetic and the optical properties of Cr-doped ZnO nanowires. The calculated results show ferromagnetic coupling for Cr atoms substitution for Zn atoms in ZnO nanowires along the [0001] direction, and the antiferromagnetic coupling with Cr-doped in ZnO nanowires along the [1010] and [0110] directions. The results reveal that the magnetic coupling state near the Fermi level gives rise to such a spin splitting phenomenon near the Fermi level, which indicates that Cr 3d and O 2p orbitals have intense hybrid effects. In addition, the spin electronic density results indicate that system magnetic moments are generated mainly by the unpaired 3d electrons of Cr atoms and are also related to the electron configuration. Moreover, the results of optical properties show that the obvious absorption peaks are observed in the far ultraviolet and the near ultraviolet regions and there is a red shift phenomenon in the ultraviolet region. These results indicate that the Cr-doped ZnO nanowires could be a promising dilute magnetic semiconductor material.

The field emission characteristics of nano-diamond deposited on titanium substrate at various temperatures are studied. It was found that the emission current increases with increase of temperature and electric field，while the stability of the emission current basically does not change. The field emission characteristic deviates from classic Fowler-Nordheim theory. The mechanism of the emission current at different temperatures is analyzed. It may be due to the combined action of scale effect of the nano-diamond and masses of hot carrier produced by nano-diamonds in external electric field. In addition，the research indicates that larger current can be generated after titanium substrates being heated up to a certain degree in external electric field, which can have large effect on field emission，showing that the titanium substrate has a certain degree of temperature sensitivity and voltage sensitivity.

Electronic and magnetic properties of V-doped ZnO nanotubes in which one of Zn2+ ions is substituted by V2+ ions are studied by the first-principles calculations of plane wave ultra-soft pseudo-potential technology based on the spin-density function theory. The computational results reveal that spontaneous magnetization in V-doped (9,0) ZnO nanotubes can be induced without p-type or n-type doping treatment, and the ferromagnetism is isotropic and independent of the chirality and diameter of the nanotubes. It is found that V-doped ZnO nanotubes have large magnetic moments and are ferromagnetic half-metal materials. Moreover, the ferromagnetic coupling among V atoms is generated by O 2p electron spins and V 3p electron spins localized at the exchanging interactions between magnetic transitional metal (TM) impurities. The appearance of ferromagnetism in V-doped ZnO nanotubes gives some reference to fabrication of a transparent ferromagnet which may have a great impact on industrial applications in magneto-optical devices.
