A hybrid spectral/finite-element code is developed to numerically solve the resistive finite-pressure magnetohydrodynamic equilibria without the necessity of postulating nested magnetic flux surfaces in the non-axisymmetric toroidal systems. The adopted approach integrates a hyperbolic parallel damping equation for pressure updating, along with a dynamic resistive relaxation for magnetic field. To address the nonaxisymmetry in toroidal geometry, a pseudo flux mapping is employed to relate the axisymmetric computational domain to the physical domain. On the computational mesh, an isoparametric C1-continuous triangular element is utilized to discretize the poloidal plane, which is complemented with a Fourier decomposition in the toroidal direction. The versatility of the code is demonstrated through its application to several different non-axisymmetric toroidal systems, including the inherently three-dimensional equilibria in stellarators, the helical-core equilibrium states in tokamak plasmas, and the quasi-single-helicity states in a reversed-field pinch.

The physics of neoclassical tearing mode (NTM) is of great concern to the tokamak plasma stability and performance, especially in the burning plasma regime. Whereas a great deal about the different seeding mechanisms have been understood, and in many situations the seed event can be clearly identified, the potential seeding process of NTM due to the resistive tearing instability driven by the impurity radiation cooling still needs more studies. Recent NIMROD simulations have demonstrated that the local impurity radiation cooling can drive the seed island growth and trigger the subsequent onset of neoclassical tearing mode instability. The seed island is mainly driven by the local helical perturbation of the diamagnetic current induced by the perturbed pressure gradient as a result of the impurity radiative cooling on the rational surface. A heuristic closure for the neoclassical viscosity is adopted, and the seed island is further driven by the perturbed bootstrap current induced from the neoclassical electron viscous stress in the extended Ohm's law. The growth rate of the NTM in simulations is found proportional to the electron neoclassical viscosity, and a theoretical neoclassical driving term is adopted to account for the nonlinear neoclassical island growth in the simulations., Comment: 21 pages, 12 figures

The formation of quasi-single helicity (QSH) state from a paramagnetic pinch in the KTX-RFP regime has been observed in recent NIMROD simulations. The quasi-single helicity state has a dominant helical component of the magnetic field that is known to improve the RFP confinement. For the initial paramagnetic pinch, linear calculations indicate that the tearing mode growth rate decreases with the plasma $\beta$. The initial QSH state arises from the dominant linear instability of the initial force-free paramagnetic pinch. The plasma's self-organization towards the second QSH state after the relaxation of the initial QSH state is found to depend on $\beta$. Specifically, when $\beta<4\%$, the plasma relaxes to an MH state; when $4\% \leq \beta \leq 8\%$, the plasma first transitions from a double axis (DAx) to a single helical axis (SHAx) state, and eventually return to the DAx state. The existence of such an optimal $\beta$ regime that is beneficial to the formation and maintenance of the QSH state, suggests an experimental scheme for the QSH formation based on $\beta$ tuning and control.

The matrix product state (MPS) ansatz offers a promising approach for finding the ground state of molecular Hamiltonians and solving quantum chemistry problems. Building on this concept, the proposed technique of quantum circuit MPS (QCMPS) enables the simulation of chemical systems using a relatively small number of qubits. In this study, we enhance the optimization performance of the QCMPS ansatz by employing the variational quantum imaginary time evolution (VarQITE) approach. Guided by McLachlan's variational principle, the VarQITE method provides analytical metrics and gradients, resulting in improved convergence efficiency and robustness of the QCMPS. We validate these improvements numerically through simulations of $\rm H_2$, $\rm H_4$, and $\rm LiH$ molecules. Additionally, given that VarQITE is applicable to non-Hermitian Hamiltonians, we evaluate its effectiveness in preparing the ground state of transcorrelated (TC) Hamiltonians. This approach yields energy estimates comparable to the complete basis set (CBS) limit while using even fewer qubits. Specifically, we perform simulations of the beryllium atom and $\rm LiH$ molecule using only three qubits, maintaining high fidelity with the CBS ground state energy of these systems. This qubit reduction is achieved through the combined advantages of both the QCMPS ansatz and transcorrelation. The scaling laws for the magnetic compression of a toroidally rotating field reversed configuration (FRC) have been investigated in this work. The magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) simulations of the magnetic compression on rotating FRCs employing the NIMROD code [C. R. Sovinec \textit{et al.}, J. Comput. Phys. \textbf{195}, 355 (2004)], are compared with the Spencer's one-dimensional (1D) theory [R. L. Spencer \textit{et al.}, Phys. Fluids \textbf{26}, 1564 (1983)] for a wide range of initial flow speeds and profiles. The toroidal flow can influence the scalings directly through the alteration of the compressional work as also evidenced in the 1D adiabatic model, and indirectly by reshaping the initial equilibrium. However, in comparison to the static initial FRC equilibrium cases, the pressure and the radius scalings remain invariant for the magnetic compression ratio $B_{w2}/B_{w1}$ up to 6 in presence of the initial equilibrium flow, suggesting a broader applicable regime of the Spencer scaling law for FRC magnetic compression. The invariant scaling has been proven a natural consequence of the conservation of angular momentum of both fluid and magnetic field during the dynamic compression process.

The advent of Neural-network Quantum States (NQS) has significantly advanced wave function ansatz research, sparking a resurgence in orbital space variational Monte Carlo (VMC) exploration. This work introduces three algorithmic enhancements to reduce computational demands of VMC optimization using NQS: an adaptive learning rate algorithm, constrained optimization, and block optimization. We evaluate the refined algorithm on complex multireference bond stretches of $\rm H_2O$ and $\rm N_2$ within the cc-pVDZ basis set and calculate the ground-state energy of the strongly correlated chromium dimer ($\rm Cr_2$) in the Ahlrichs SV basis set. Our results achieve superior accuracy compared to coupled cluster theory at a relatively modest CPU cost. This work demonstrates how to enhance optimization efficiency and robustness using these strategies, opening a new path to optimize large-scale Restricted Boltzmann Machine (RBM)-based NQS more effectively and marking a substantial advancement in NQS's practical quantum chemistry applications., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, and 2 tables

Advanced tokamak scenarios often feature equilibriums with zero and reversed magnetic shear. To isolate and investigate their impacts on the resistive wall mode (RWM) instability analytically, we construct a series of cylindrical limiter equilibriums with reversed magnetic shear in the core and zero magnetic shear towards plasma edge, as a prototype of the configurations in advanced tokamak scenarios. Uniform plasma pressure is assumed, so that we can focus our analysis on the current-driven RWMs. Based on the reduced ideal MHD equations, analytical solutions for the $n=1$ resistive wall mode are obtained, which indicate that increasing the reversal of magnetic shear in the core region enhances the RWM instability, whereas the widened region of zero shear near edge leads to lower growth rate of RWM, except when the $q$ value with zero magnetic shear approaches rational values. On the other hand, enhanced positive shear at plasma edge is found to be stabilizing on RWM. NIMROD calculation results confirm these analytical findings.

The safe operation of most tokamaks, especially the largen sized ones, rely on the feedback control of the vertical displacement events (VDEs). However, most these feedback control systems are based on the axisymmetric VDE models. In this work, we use NIMROD simulations to study the roles of non-axisymmetric perturbations in free drift vertical displacement events on EAST. The high-$n$ modes in non-axisymmetric VDE grow first, which drive the formation of high-$n$ magnetic island chains. Subsequently, the magnetic island chains grow and overlap with each other, leading to the destruction of the magnetic flux surface, which induces a minor disruption and accelerates the start of the following major disruption. The magnetic island and the stochastic magnetic field allow the toroidally asymmetric poloidal plasma current to jet towards the hoop force direction, forming the finger and filamentary structures. Such a plasma current asymmetry strongly depends on the anisotropy in thermal transport coefficients.
