For close to six decades, ethnoarchaeology has studied the present to better understand the past. However, if understanding the past is paramount, then what of the wishes and interests of those with whom we collaborate in the present? This situation raises questions such as who is ethnoarchaeology for, and how might its outcomes be valuable to both researchers and collaborators? We address these issues by focusing on the space in which researchers operate, namely the 'gap' between archaeological and Indigenous conceptualizations of the world, and propose methodological openness to help achieve new ways of thinking about ethnoarchaeology. Drawing on our experiences conducting rock art research in Australia and the American Southwest, we describe the complexities that emerged during conversations with Yanyuwa and Zuni elders and how they have helped bridge the methodological 'gap' and enrich our research and understanding of rock art. An enduring mystery from the great houses of Chaco Canyon is the origin of more than 240,000 construction timbers. We evaluate probable timber procurement areas for seven great houses by applying tree-ring width-based sourcing to a set of 170 timbers. To our knowledge, this is the first use of tree rings to assess timber origins in the southwestern United States. We found that the Chuska and Zuni Mountains (>75 km distant) were the most likely sources, accounting for 70% of timbers. Most notably, procurement areas changed through time. Before 1020 Common Era (CE) nearly all timbers originated from the Zunis (a previously unrecognized source), but by 1060 CE the Chuskas eclipsed the Zuni area in total wood imports. This shift occurred at the onset of Chaco florescence in the 11th century, a time with substantial expansion of existing great houses and the addition of seven new great houses in the Chaco Core area. It also coincides with the proliferation of Chuskan stone tools and pottery in the archaeological record of Chaco Canyon, further underscoring the link between land use and occupation in the Chuska area and the peak of great house construction. Our findings, based on the most temporally specific and replicated evidence of Chacoan resource procurement obtained to date, corroborate the long-standing but recently challenged interpretation that large numbers of timbers were harvested and transported from distant mountain ranges to build the great houses at Chaco Canyon. Introduction: One in three people will be diagnosed with diabetes by 2050, and the proportion will likely be higher among Native Americans. Diabetes control is currently suboptimal in underserved populations despite a plethora of new therapies. Patient empowerment is a key determinant of diabetes control, but such empowerment can be difficult to achieve due to resource limitation and cultural, language and health literacy barriers. We describe a home-based educational intervention using Community Health Representatives (CHRs), leading to improvement in Patient Activation Measures scores and clinical indicators of diabetes control. Methods: Sixty participants with type 2 diabetes (T2D) completed a baseline evaluation including physical exam, Point of Care (POC) testing, and the Patient Activation Measure (PAM) survey. Participants then underwent a one hour group didactic session led by Community Health Representatives (CHRs) who subsequently carried out monthly home-based educational interventions to encourage healthy lifestyles, including diet, exercise, and alcohol and cigarette avoidance until follow up at 6 months, when clinical phenotyping and the PAM survey were repeated. Results: PAM scores were increased by at least one level in 35 (58%) participants, while 24 participants who started at higher baseline score did not change. Six months after intervention, mean levels of A1C decreased by 0.7 ± 1.2%; fasting blood glucose decreased by 24.0 ± 38.0 mg/dl; BMI decreased by 1.5 ± 2.1 kg/m2; total cholesterol decreased by 12.0± 28.0 mg/dl; and triglycerides decreased by 52.0 ± 71.0 mg/dl. All of these changes were statistically significant (p<0.05). Conclusion: This six month, CHR led and community-oriented educational intervention helps inform standards of practice for the management of diabetes, engages diabetic populations in their own care, and reduces health disparities for the underserved population of Zuni Indians. Introduction: The Zuni Pueblo, in collaboration with the University of New Mexico, have formed the Zuni Health Initiative (ZHI) engaged in community-based participatory research to plan and implement educational interventions to reduce health disparities. We conducted the first phase of ZHI study and identified barriers to healthcare. We concluded that the burden presented by these barriers ultimately translates into a lack of patient activation and engagement in their health care including for diabetes, effectively hindering adoption of healthy behaviors. Methods: Community health representatives (CHRs) led 10 one-hour focus group sessions to elicit information on diabetes knowledge and self-management strategies at which a total of 84 people participated. Audiotapes were translated and transcribed by bilingual ZHI staff. We reduced the text to thematic categories, constructed a coding dictionary and inserted the text into NVivo 9 program. Results: The focus groups revealed that despite extensive personal or family experiences with diabetes or complications, participants identified knowledge gaps in the disease progression and disease management. However, we gained insight into how many Zunis conceptualize the etiology of diabetes, risk factors associated with diabetes, sources of knowledge and self-management practices. Conclusion: We concluded that many of the Zuni diabetics experience significant impacts on their life when they were diagnosed with diabetes and suffered the plight of stigmatization. The Zuni Pueblo is home to an economically disadvantaged population, which faces a public health challenge from the interrelated epidemics of obesity, diabetes and kidney disease. Efforts to decrease the impact of these epidemics have been complicated by historical, economic and cultural barriers, which may limit healthcare utilization. The NIH supported Zuni Health Initiative (ZHI) conducted a study to identify barriers to healthcare in the Zuni Pueblo. Community health representatives (CHRs) led 14 one-hour focus group sessions at which a total of 112 people participated posed unique questions that took into account the Zuni culture to elicit information on perceived barriers to healthcare. Audiotapes were translated and transcribed by bilingual ZHI staff. We reduced the text to thematic categories, constructed a coding dictionary and inserted the text into NVivo 9 program. We identified nine themes emerged regarding the barriers experienced in receiving healthcare and adhering to medical advice. These included distance; transportation; embarrassment; relating to healthcare professionals; navigating the medical system; awareness of available resources; waiting times; adhering to medication; and incentives in health promotion. In conclusion the implementation of culturally appropriate community-based health promotion programs and preventive screening techniques will improve access to healthcare and diminish health disparities. The article focuses on Protestant missionary Taylor F. Ealy and his role as a builder at the pueblo of Zuni, New Mexico. The author explains that Ealy's construction plans were associated with the U.S. federal initiatives to assimilate American Indians, explores how Ealy's family created social, cultural, and religious barriers between themselves and the Zuni Indians, and examines the Zunis' autonomy negotiations during the construction project.

The article discusses Pueblo Indians' engagement with the 16th-century Coronado Expedition, a group of European explorers led by Spanish conquistador Francisco Vázquez de Coronado. The author explains the ways in which Zuni, or Ashiwi, Indians planned for the arrival of the expedition as it approached their territory in southwestern New Mexico through the use of lookouts. Also detailed are the Native American information and travel networks that allowed different groups of Indians to communicate about the movements of the expedition. The author argues that such networks allowed the Zuni Indians to know about the expedition years prior to its arrival and gain knowledge about guns and war horses, which subsequently led them to develop successful tactics for attacking the expeditionaries.

Meyer’s commentary describes the particularities and priorities of cultural work in indigenous Oaxaca, Mexico, and in minoritized New Mexico, in this context particularly with regards to Navajos and Zunis. It questions the optimism found in Fishman’s Cultural Autonomy propositions and points in particular to the ways in which powerful external and internal forces repress the “choice” offered to these communities. Zuni principles value repetition as an affirmation of the continuity of knowledge, thereby challenging particular Euro-American notions of the "copy" as a devaluation of the "original." Using examples from Zuni philosophy as well as scientific traditions in creating replicas, I examine overlaps and differences between Zuni and Euro-American approaches to the reproduction of knowledge. Con- temporary Zuni concerns about controlling the reproduction of esoteric knowledge are explored here through the history of replicas made in the nineteenth century by anthropologists as well as the development of protocols for reproducing knowledge in the newly established Zuni tribal museum. These temporally situated transcultural encounters with and debates over the reproduction of knowl- edge are used to argue against the cross-cultural applicability of representational theories, as these are characteristically based on Euro-American postmodern notions of the instability of meaning between "copies" and "originals." The article discusses the issues concerning Schneieder's views on kinship. It explores the theory of procreation and co-fatherhood among the Yanomami. It examines the work of Alfred L. Kroeber, a pioneering linguistic anthropologist, on Zuni kinship terminology. According to Kroeber, kinship terminology as linguistic phenomena follows a logic inherent to the linguistic system itself. Also, it analyzes the relational terminology system at Zuni which includes the full linguistic repertoire of forms of social classificational nomenclature both in referential and reciprocal address usages.

Surveys and excavations in the Zuni area have indicated that the culture of the earlier periods in that district was broadly Puerco-Chacoan in character, and that it was strongly influenced during the later periods by a Mogollon culture that probably stemmed directly from the "budding off" of late Mogollon pueblos of the northern Branches. Evidence for this relationship is noted in the continuum between these areas not only of styles of ceramic design and complexes of pottery types, but also in certain architectural traits such as types of masonry construction, settlement patterns and types of stone artifacts of a ceremonial nature. This relationship is outlined as having developed in three stages beginning with trade in pottery and axes of a Puerco-Chacoan character to the Mogollon villages and culminating in a period when the Zuni were making black-on-white and black-on-red polychrome pottery in the Tularosa style and building a characteristic type of rectangular kiva. Methylglyoxal (MG), a highly reactive, cytotoxic, cross-linking endogenous aldehyde involved in the modification of biologic macromolecules, is elevated among patients with T2DM. Glyoxalase I (Glo1) is the initial enzyme involved in the detoxification of MG. Glo1 is a dimeric enzyme with three isoforms Glo1-1, Glo2-1, and Glo2-2, resulting from a point mutation (A→C) at position 332 of cDNA. The present study was conducted to explore the hypothesis that specific polymorphisms of the Glo1 gene are associated with diabetes and/or albuminuria in Zuni Indians. We studied four groups of Zuni Indians stratified by diabetes status and albuminuria, as assessed by the urinary albumin:creatinine ratio (UACR): Group I—normal controls; Group II—T2DM and UACR<0.03; Group III—T2DM and UACR≥0.03; and Group IV—nondiabetic participants with UACR≥0.03. Genomic DNA was used as template for polymerase chain reaction amplification of the Glo1 gene. Products were digested to yield 110-bp bands (homozygous, CC); 54- and 45-bp bands (homozygous, AA); or all three bands (heterozygous CA). Data on age, gender, UACR, serum creatinine, hemoglobin A1c, serum glucose, systolic and diastolic blood pressures, and the duration of T2DM among participants in Groups II and III were analyzed using analysis of variance. A generalized linear model logistic regression analysis was used to assess the relationships between specific Glo1 polymorphisms to T2DM and UACR. All three Glo1 genotypes were present among Zuni Indians. There were no significant differences in the distributions of Glo1 genotypes among the study groups (chi-square test, P=.5590). The prevalence of Glo1 A allele was higher among diabetic participants (Groups II and III combined) than among nondiabetic participants (Groups I and IV combined) (chi-square test, P=.0233). The Zuni Life Skills Development Program, an effective community-initiated and high-school-based suicide prevention intervention, is featured. Development and evaluation of this intervention are followed by note of the specific challenges associated with stabilizing the program. A more tribally diverse, culturally-informed model entitled the American Indian Life Skills Development Curriculum is then presented to illustrate a hybrid approach to the cultural tailoring of interventions. This curriculum is broad enough to address concerns across diverse American Indian tribal groups yet respectful of distinctive and heterogeneous cultural beliefs and practices. Zuni presents the typologically interesting case of possessing two intransitive constructions with an accusative case-marked (structural) object. While the presence of accusative case more generally has been attributed to the assignment of an agent thematic role. the correlation between semantic interpretation and accusative vs. nominative case in Zuni intransitives indicates instead that properties of subevent structure are at work. The case is made that the notion of eventivity is a grammatically complex one; whereas same languages bundle the components of eventivity (including agents 'and causing process) together, Zuni represents the more uncommon case in which the causing process is isolatable in the grammatical structure of the language, Accusative case in Zuni eventive intransitives may be attributed to morphology that encodes this causing process subevent. This study examined the constructions of aging through the eyes of the elders on Zuni Pueblo in New Mexico. Classical ethnographic field techniques were used to collect data during 1800 hours of fieldwork on the Pueblo. In Zuni, indigenous constructs of aging are firmly rooted in their traditions. Most elders found it essential to stay on a traditional path, although, it was undeniable that Western constructions also existed in their cosmos, Zuni traditions triangulate with perspectives from the West to form a fluctuating middle that stays within prescribed boundaries of a "box" bounded by the four directions and the zenith and nadir planes. The degree to which an elder remains oral vs. literal, ages in the "Zuni way," and within a sacred domain greatly affects decision-making, as well as action and or inaction in aging behaviors. Understanding perspectives rooted within an "inside-the-box" paradigm, valuing the old. the ancestors, sacredness, and the "Zuni way" will assist in deriving relevant theories and programs for these American Indian elders. Kidney disease among the Zuni Indians: The Zuni Kidney Project. Background. There is an epidemic of kidney disease among the Zuni Indians. In collaboration with health care providers and research institutions, the Zuni Pueblo established the Zuni Kidney Project to reduce the burden of kidney disease. Methods. The Zuni Kidney Project conducted a population-based, cross-sectional survey to estimate the prevalence of albuminuria, hematuria, and related risk factors. Neighborhood household clusters served as the sampling frame. Participants completed a questionnaire, donated blood and urine samples, and had blood pressure, height, and weight measured. This survey provided the foundation for ongoing studies to identify genetic and environmental risk factors for disease susceptibility and progression. Results. Age and gender distributions among survey participants were similar to those in the eligible Zuni population. Prevalence of incipient albuminuria (IA) (0.03≤ urine albumin:creatinine ratio, UACR <0.3) and overt albuminuria (OA) (UACR <0.3) were higher among diabetics [IA 34.3% (28.3, 40.4%); OA 18.6% (13.7, 23.6%)] than nondiabetics [IA 11.1% (9.3, 12.8%); OA 1.7% (1.0, 2.5%)]. Nondiabetics comprised 58.6% (52.2, 65.0%) and 30.9% (19.9, 41.9%) of participants with IA and OA, respectively. The prevalence of hematuria was higher among diabetics [≥ trace 47.0% (40.7, 53.4); ≥50 red blood cell/μL 25.8% (20.3, 31.4%)] than nondiabetics [≥ trace 31.1% (28.5, 33.7%); ≥50 red blood cell/μL 16.6% (14.5, 18.7%)]. Hypertension was associated with albuminuria among diabetic and nondiabetic participants. Hypercholesterolemia was associated with albuminuria among nondiabetic participants. Diabetes and alcohol use were associated with hematuria. Conclusion. The high prevalences of albuminuria among nondiabetics and of hematuria among diabetics and nondiabetics are consistent with high rates of nondiabetic kidney disease among Zuni Indians with and without diabetes. Since 1940, Native Americans have been required to apply to the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) to obtain eagle carcasses or other parts. An increase in tribal populations and a revitalization of cultural practices has increased the demand for eagle parts and led to delays in filling requests. In a cooperative effort with the USFWS, the Pueblo of Zuni Indian Tribe recently revived the ancient Zuni practice of live eagle husbandry in order to both maintain this cultural practice and make eagle feathers more widely available to tribal members. This is being accomplished in a manner consistent with modern raptor husbandry techniques, but in a Zuni-based context. Environmental professionals have assisted the project greatly, especially concerning the life history and behavioral needs of the birds and the implications for eagle conservation. Although we have explored and decided against the idea of breeding captive eagles so that their young may be released into the wild (because it goes against traditional Zuni beliefs), this is certainly a feasible option for other, similar facilities and would be strongly supported by the USFWS, conservation groups, and wildlife professionals. The American Indian and Alaska Native population is aging and the leading causes of death for those aged 55 and older are chronic diseases such as cancer, heart disease, and the complications of diabetes. There are limited formal palliative care services available to rural and reservation dwelling American Indians and Alaska Natives. This collaboration between a tribally operated home health care agency and a federally operated Indian Health Service hospital, with the support of a palliative care center within an academic medical center, has established a palliative care program in the Pueblo of Zuni. The program is based in the tribal home health agency. Barriers to development included the rural setting with limited professional workforce, competing demands in a small agency, the need for coordination across distinct organizations, and the need to address the dying process in a culturally proficient manner. Family-focused interviews and other techniques were used to tailor the palliative care program to the unique cultural setting. The program has sought to integrate inpatient care of terminally ill patients at the Indian Health Service (IHS) hospital with outpatient hospice care. The initial goal of obtaining certification as a Medicare Hospice provider has not been met and remains a goal. Meanwhile alternative mechanisms for funding the services have been found. The experience of this collaboration suggests that a tribally based, culturally proficient palliative care program can be developed within an American Indian/Alaska Native community and that it can drive the local health system toward improved end-of-life care. This article describes Zuni, a town of nearly 10,000 in population in New Mexico. It was said that while some people would consider Zuni a desolate place in the middle of the desert, others find it a very special attraction. The Zuni have been of special interest to anthropologists for over 120 years. Others attracted to Zuni include collectors of art who come to see and buy exquisite hand crafter jewelry, fetish carvings, prayer shawls, and decorative pottery. Zuni is the home of one of New Mexico Pueblo Indian Tribes. The Zuni people attach great importance to their creation story. According to the Zuni, the universe began with five basic beings, Awonawilona, Father Sun, Mother Moon, and a divine pair below. All nature, all life and other forms of nature, was created by these five beings.

OBJECTIVE — Test the hypothesis that diabetes and related risk factors are more common among female than male Zuni Indians. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS We conducted a population-based, crosssectional survey of the Zuni Indians aged ≥5 years. We used households within neighborhood clusters as the sampling frame. We administered a questionnaire, collected blood and urine, and measured height and weight. Self-reported diabetes was used to assess previously diagnosed diabetes. Participants without a prior history of diabetes were classified as having newly diagnosed diabetes if they had HbA[sub 1c] >7.0% or random glucose ≥11.1 mmol/l during the survey. RESULTS The prevalence of previously diagnosed diabetes among Zuni Indians aged ≤5 years (n = 1,503) was higher among female Zuni Indians (16.7% [95% CI 14.1-19.3]) than male Zuni Indians (9.7% [7.4-12.1]) (P < 0.001). The prevalence of newty diagnosed diabetes was similar among female Zuni Indians (2.4% [1.4-3.4]) and male Zuni Indians (2.4% [1.2-3.6]). The prevalence of previously and newly diagnosed diabetes was higher among female Zuni Indians (19.1% [16.4-21.9]) than male Zuni Indians (12.2% [9.5-14.8]) (P < 0.001), The prevalence of obesity was higher among female Zuni Indians (34.3% [30.9-37.7]) than male Zuni Indians (21.5% [18.4-24.7]) (P < 0.001). Obesity was associated with diabetes among female and male Zuni Indians. Physical inactivity was more common among female Zuni Indians (44.2% [40.7-47.8]) than male Zuni Indians (35.1% [31.5-38.7]) (P < 0.001). However, physical inactivity was not associated with diabetes among either female or mate Zuni Indians. Gestational diabetes was a risk factor among female Zuni Indians. CONCLUSIONS — Among the Zuni Indians, the prevalence of diabetes was 57% higher among female than male members of the population. Culture, tradition, and lifestyle differences may contribute to the higher prevalence of diabetes and obesity among female Zuni Indians. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nongame bird hunting is a critical activity of the Zuni people of the southwestern United States. To help determine whether their current hunting practices may be negatively affecting bird populations on the Zuni Reservation, we interviewed 98 Zuni hunters. Nongame bird hunting was practiced by a large portion of Zuni males (45%); the most active age group was 20- to 49-year-olds. The rate a species was hunted was not a function of its abundance at Zuni but seemed instead to be related to its cultural demand. Five “species”—bluebirds ( Sialia currucoides, S. mexicana), Northern Flicker ( Colaptes auratus), woodpeckers ( Picoides villosus, P. pubescens, Melanerpes lewis), Steller's Jay ( Cyanocitta stelleri), and American Kestrel ( Falco sparverius)—made up 77% of all birds taken. The two most heavily hunted species were each taken in numbers> 10,000 individuals per year. Although the greatest number of hunters were active in autumn, 31% hunted in spring, despite discouragement by the tribal government. Habitats favored by hunters were coniferous forests and riparian areas. Rates of hunting of nongame birds at Zuni equaled or exceeded those reported for game birds hunted by indigenous hunters in the Neotropics and New Mexico. The Zuni believe that some heavily hunted species are decreasing in number because of hunting. Although we cannot prove this at present, we suggest measures to mitigate possible overhunting, including the creation of refugia and a reduction of spring hunting. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents a study on a comparison of semantic structures in American Southwest culture groups. The factor structures of a sample of semantic scales showed that Spanish, Zuni, Hopi, and English-speaking respondents define a semantic space with like dynamism and evaluative dimensions. Although the semantic space for the Navaho group can be defined with like dimensions, the similarity measures were consistently lower for the said group. A third factor for each group was not similar for all groups.
