Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have served, and continue to serve, a crucial role in the history of African-Americans (AAs). For many AA students, an HBCU may be the only access to a post-secondary education. If an AA student has an interest in Spanish, however, often times the HBCUs may not able to provide the necessary program (or at least certain elements of the program) that would ensure the student's success. This paper will serve to discuss the following issues in Spanish programs at HBCUs: course offerings, study abroad programs, teaching methodology, and issues that may inhibit the improvement of these programs.
