Abstract

We discuss the final results of the MACRO experiment on atmospheric neutrino oscillations. The data concern event topologies with average neutrino energies of ~3 and ~50 GeV. Multiple Coulomb Scattering of the high energy muons was used to estimate the neutrino energy event by event. The angular distributions, the L/E_nu distribution, the particle ratios and the absolute fluxes all favor nu_mu --> nu_tau oscillations with maximal mixing and Delta m^2 ~0.0023 eV^2. Emphasis is given to measured ratios which are not affected by Monte Carlo (MC) absolute normalization; a discussion is made on MC uncertainties. A preliminary search for possible Lorentz invariance violation contributions to atmospheric neutrino oscillations is presented and discussed., 4 pages, 6 figures. Abstract

The MACRO experiment detected different categories of atmospheric muon neutrinos. We describe in this paper the energy estimate of upward throughgoing muons by using the multiple coulomb scattering. Combining the results of such analysis with the upgoing muon angular distribution, both not using the absolute ν flux normalization informations, an evidence above 4σ for atmospheric neutrino oscillation is found.

Abstract

In the MACRO experiment the flux of atmospheric muon neutrinos has been studied through the detection of upward-going muons generated in the rock below the detector and also through neutrino interactions inside the apparatus. Several topologies of neutrino events have been detected, which correspond to different neutrino parent energies. The measured flux in the different data sets shows a deficit with respect to the Monte Carlo predictions. Moreover, the upward-throughgoing muon sample (median neutrino energy ∼ 50 GeV ) also shows a distortion in the angular distribution shape. Interpreted in terms of neutrino oscillation, these results favor a ν μ into ν τ oscillation scenario, while the ν μ into ν sterile channel is disfavared at 99% C.L.

Abstract

High energy neutrinos from astrophysical sources can be detected as upward-going muons produced in charged-current interactions with the matter surrounding the detector. We present the results of a search for either a diffuse astrophysical neutrino flux or a point-like source of neutrinos in the sample of upward-going muons gathered by MACRO. We find no evidence for both signals. The muon flux upper limit for the diffuse signal has been set at the level of 1.7 × 10^-14cm^-2 s^-1 sr^-1.

Abstract

We report the analysis of the N ϵ - N μ coincident events collected by the MACRO/EAS-TOP collaboration at the Gran Sasso Laboratories. The result points to a primary composition becoming heavier around the knee of the primary spectrum (in the energy region 10 15 – 10 16 eV). The result is in very good agreement with the measurements of EAS-TOP alone at the surface, wich detects muons with energy E μ > 1 GeV and uses the same (QGSJET) interaction model.

Abstract

The final results of the MACRO experiment on atmospheric neutrino oscillations are presented and discussed. The data concern different event topologies with average neutrino energies of ~3 and ~50 GeV. Multiple Coulomb Scattering of the high energy muons in absorbers was used to estimate the neutrino energy of each event. The angular distributions, the L/E_nu distribution, the particle ratios and the absolute fluxes all favour nu_mu --> nu_tau oscillations with maximal mixing and Delta m^2 =0.0023 eV^2. A discussion is made on the Monte Carlos used for the atmospheric neutrino flux. Some results on neutrino astrophysics are also briefly discussed., Invited Paper at the NANP03 Int. Abstract

The final results of the MACRO experiment on atmospheric neutrino oscillations are presented. The data concern different event topologies with average neutrino energies of ~ 3 and ~ 50 GeV. Multiple Coulomb Scattering of the high energy muons was used to estimate the neutrino energy event by event. The angular distributions, the L/E_nu distribution, the particle ratios and the absolute fluxes all favour nu_mu --> nu_tau oscillations with maximal mixing and Delta m^2 ~ 0.0023 eV^2. Abstract

Juvenile patellar chondromalacia is a common orthopedic disorder which can mimic other conditions; early diagnosis is mandatory to prevent its evolution into osteoarthrosis. In the early stages of patellar chondromalacia (I and II), the lesions originate in the deep cartilage layer and the joint surface is not affected. Arthroscopy can demonstrate joint surface changes only and give indirect information about deeper lesions. We investigated the yield of 2D FLASH MRI with 30 degrees flip angle and a dedicated coil in the diagnosis of patellar chondromalacia, especially in its early stages.Eighteen patients (mean age: 21 years) with clinically suspected patellar chondromalacia were examined with MRI; 13 of them were also submitted to arthroscopy. A 1.5 T unit with a transmit-and-receive extremity coil was used. We acquired T1 SE sequences (TR/TE: 500-700/15/20) and 2D T2* FLASH sequence (TR/TE/FA: 500-800/18/30 degrees). The field of view was 160-180 mm and the matrix 192 x 256, with 2-3 NEX. The images were obtained on the axial plane. The lesions were classified in 4 stages according to Shahriaree classification.Agreement between MR and arthroscopic findings was good in both early and advanced lesions in 12/13 cases. Early lesions appeared as hyperintense focal thickening of the hyaline cartilage (stage I) or as small cystic lesions within the cartilage and no articular surface involvement (stage II). The medial patellar facet was the most frequent site. Advanced lesions appeared as articular surface ulcerations, thinning and cartilage hypointensity (stage III); stage IV lesions presented as complete erosions of the hyaline cartilage and hypointense underlying bone.2D FLASH MRI with 30 degrees flip angle can show the differences in water content in the cartilage and thus permit to detect early chondromalacia lesions in the deep cartilage.

Abstract

The analysis of the e.m. component of EAS and of the deep underground muons detected in coincidence by EAS-TOP and MACRO has been performed to study the primary cosmic ray composition in the energy range 5 · 1014 − 1 · 1016eV, around the knee of the primary spectrum. New results are presented with improved statistics, mostly above the knee of the energy spectrum.

Abstract

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) shows, in the post-traumatic knee, a fairly high number of bone and cartilage injuries missed by conventional radiography and therefore called occult. Our aim is to classify these injuries, to correlate their site and distribution with associated menisco-ligamentous injuries and with trauma mechanisms. Thirty-eight patients with a history of acute knee trauma and negative X-ray findings were examined with MRI within 15 days of trauma. 1.5- and 0.5-T units and SE T1-weighted GE T2*-weighted and SE T2-weighted sequences were used. The injuries were classified as intraosseous and osteochondral bruises or fractures. Twenty-three patients with menisco-ligamentous injuries were submitted to therapeutic arthroscopy; the sites of bone and cartilage injuries depicted with MRI were studied with arthroscopy. Seven patients were followed-up with MRI at 6-12 months to investigate subchondral injury evolution: 5 of 7 patients were also submitted to arthroscopy. MRI showed a statistically significant correlation between site and distribution of bone and cartilage injuries and between internal derangement and trauma mechanisms, i.e., contusion, distortion, stress. In our experience, MRI could identify and characterize occult subchondral injuries, thus allowing appropriate treatment.

Abstract

MACRO was an experiment that ran in the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso from 1988 to 2000. Its principal goal was to observe magnetic monopoles or set significantly lower experimental flux limits than had been previously available in the velocity range from about beta = 10(-4) to unity. In addition it made a variety of other observations. Examples are: setting flux limits on other so far unobserved particles such as nuclearites and lightly ionizing particles, searching for WIMP annihilations in the Earth and the Sun and for neutrino bursts from stellar collapses in or near our Galaxy, and making measurements relevant to high energy muon and neutrino astronomy and of the flux of up-going muons as a function of nadir angle showing evidence for neutrino oscillations. The apparatus consisted of three principal types of detectors: liquid scintillator counters, limited streamer tubes, and nuclear track etch detectors. In addition, over part of its area it contained a transition radiation detector. The general design philosophy emphasized redundancy and complementarity. This paper describes the technical aspects of the complete MACRO detector, its operational performance, and the techniques used to calibrate it and verify its proper operation. Abstract

La neurocisticercosi, sostenuta dalla la forma larvale della Tenia Solium, è la più frequente forma di parassitosi del sistema nervoso centrale dell'uomo, ma in Europa è eccezionale.La diagnosi si basa su test sierologici e liquorali, che quando positivi, hanno elevata specificità, nei casi dubbi il suggerimento diagnostico fornito dalla neuroradiologia può essere molto importante.Gli autori riportano un caso di neurocisticercosi parenchimale, a siero-liquorologia negativa, diagnosticato e monitorizzato in corso di terapia antiparassitaria con RM, con progressiva risoluzione del quadro clinico, fino a completa guarigione, e progressiva risoluzione neuroradiologia delle lesioni parenchimali.I segni neuroradiologici sui quali articolare la diagnosi e corrispondenti alle lesioni del tessuto cerebrale nella loro evoluzione patologica sono: presenza di lesioni cistiche; contenuto delle cisti; eventale presenza di capsula, con impregnazione cercinata dopo mdc; eventuale nodulo murario, corrispondente allla testa del parassita; edema perilesionale ed effetto massa.

Abstract

MACRO was an experiment that ran in the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso from 1988 to 2000. Its principal goal was to observe magnetic monopoles or set significantly lower experimental flux limits than had been previously available in the velocity range from about beta = 10(-4) to unity. In addition it made a variety of other observations. Examples are: setting flux limits on other so far unobserved particles such as nuclearites and lightly ionizing particles, searching for WIMP annihilations in the Earth and the Sun and for neutrino bursts from stellar collapses in or near our Galaxy, and making measurements relevant to high energy muon and neutrino astronomy and of the flux of up-going muons as a function of nadir angle showing evidence for neutrino oscillations. The apparatus consisted of three principal types of detectors: liquid scintillator counters, limited streamer tubes, and nuclear track etch detectors. In addition, over part of its area it contained a transition radiation detector. The general design philosophy emphasized redundancy and complementarity. This paper describes the technical aspects of the complete MACRO detector, its operational performance, and the techniques used to calibrate it and verify its proper operation. Abstract

DNA mixture deconvolution in the forensic DNA community has been addressed in a variety of ways. "Front-end" methods that separate the cellular components of mixtures can provide a significant benefit over computational methods as there is no need to rely on models with inherent uncertainty to generate conclusions. Historically, cell separation methods have been investigated but have been largely ineffective due to high cost, unreliability, and the lack of proper instrumentation. However, the last decade has given rise to more innovative technology that can target and recover cells more effectively. This study focuses on the development and optimization of a method to selectively label and recover male cells in a mixture of male and female epithelial cells using a Y-chromosome labeling kit with DEPArray™ technology, whereby male cells are labeled and recovered into a single extraction-ready tube. Labeling efficiency was tested using freshly collected and aged buccal swabs where 70%-75% and 38% of male cells were labeled, respectively, with less than 1% false positives. DEPArray™ detection was assessed using single buccal epithelial cells where approximately 80% of labeled cells were identified as male. Mixtures (1:1, 1:10, male to female) yielded profiles that were predominantly single source male or those in which the male component was more easily interpreted. The male-specific labeling method was demonstrated to be both robust and reliable when used on freshly collected cells. While the DEPArray™ meditated detection and recovery had notable limitations, it still improved the interpretation of the male component in same-cell mixtures in more recently collected samples., (© 2024 The Authors. Abstract

Purpose: To evaluate the diagnostic effectiveness of magnetic resonance (MR) in knee cartilage pathologies of different regions and grades with the aim of establishing the role of MR in treatment choice., Materials and Methods: We enrolled 90 patients who underwent MR and arthroscopy of the knee. To classify cartilage lesions we used a simplified grading system that correlates MR to arthroscopic reports and divides lesions into low and high grades. The MR examinations were performed with a 1.5 T superconducting magnet with a standard protocol to obtain quality images in a short time, using T1-weighted spin-echo sequences, T2* weighted gradient-echo sequences and inversion recovery sequences. The MR diagnostic specificity, sensitivity and accuracy and MR positive predictive value and negative predictive value in identifying and grading the chondral lesions of the femorotibial and patellofemoral compartments were calculated and compared to arthroscopy parameters., Results: The analysis of each grade of chondral lesions reveals an MR accuracy of 94% in high-grade lesions of the femorotibial and patellofemoral compartments and an MR accuracy of 78% in low-grade lesions of patellofemoral compartment and of 70% in low-grade lesions of femorotibial compartment. This result suggests MR is useful for the grading of chondral lesions in clinical practice., Conclusions: MR diagnostic effectiveness substantially changes according to the different location and grade of chondral lesions. While MR seems to be nearly equivalent to arthroscopy for high-grade lesions subject to surgery, it appears to be less accurate in diagnosing low-grade lesions, in particular femorotibial lesions.
