Abstract

Biochar, as an organic amendment, could positively change soil properties, especially soil with low organic matter and/or poor structure. Biochar application in sandy soil with low organic matter could be an effective tool for improving hydro-physical parameters of the soil economically and ecologically as well. The effect on bulk density, particle density, porosity, saturated hydraulic conductivity and available water content for plants of two biochar types applied at three different particle sizes in a sandy soil was examined. The results confirmed previous studies, showing decreased bulk density, particle density and saturated hydraulic conductivity and partially increased available water content for plants and porosity. Both biochar type and particle size affected the studied soil hydro-physical parameters. After analysis and comparison of two different types of biochar and three particle sizes, the most effective treatment for sandy soil was proved by the biochar produced from willow with the smallest particle size (

Abstract

In a greenhouse experiment, we studied the impact of Melia azedarach ripe fruit water extract (MWE), Furfural (a key ingredient of M. azedarach), and the commercial nematicide Oxamyl (Vydate® 10 SL) on the soil free-living nematode community. Treatments were applied every 20 days for two months, and soil samples were collected 3 days after the last application (3DAA) and at the end of the cultivation period (34DAA). We assessed short- and long-term effects on nematode community structure, metabolic footprint, genus composition, and interaction networks. Oxamyl and Furfural significantly reduced bacterial and fungal feeder populations. MWE had no impact on free-living nematode populations. Oxamyl and Furfural-treated soil samples were dominated by Rhabditis at 3DAA and Meloidogyne spp. at 34DAA. On the contrary, MWE-treated soil showed a balanced distribution, with Rhabditis, Panagrolaimus, Mesorhabditis, and Diploscapter being equally abundant. MWE treatment exhibited higher diversity indices (Shannon and Simpson) and equitability. Network analysis showed that the Oxamyl network had the highest fragmentation, while the MWE and Furfural networks had higher cohesion compared to the control. Mesorhabditis spp. in the MWE network played a crucial role, being directly connected to the omnivore genera Thonus and Aporcelaimellus. Our results indicated that continuous MWE application, besides controlling Meloidogyne spp., could enhance the structure and stability of the soil-free-living nematode community. 10. Assessing Microplastic-Induced Changes in Sandy Soil Properties and Crop Growth.

Abstract

An ever-increasing amount of microplastics enters the environment and affects soil properties and plant growth. Investigating how the interactions between microplastics and soil properties vary across different soil types is crucial. In sandy soil, the subcritical SWR induced by microplastics may affect other soil properties. The objective of this study was to assess the impact of adding three types of microplastics (high-density polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, and polystyrene) at a concentration of 5% (w/w) to sandy soil on the persistence and severity of SWR, as well as on various soil properties (bulk density, water sorptivity, and hydraulic conductivity) and plant characteristics (fresh and dry weight, maximum photochemical efficiency of PSII, and nutrient content) of radish (Raphanus sativus L.). It was found that microplastic contamination increased the persistence and severity of SWR and decreased soil bulk density, water sorptivity, and hydraulic conductivity. The total biomass measurements did not reveal a significant difference between the microplastic treatments and the control group. This study did not confirm any significant influence of microplastic contamination on the maximum photochemical efficiency of PSII, a measure of crop photosynthesis. Even though the value of photosynthetic efficiency changed with time, the values for all treatments stabilised at the end of the experiment. Microplastic contamination did not significantly alter crops' nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, or zinc contents. However, the copper content was reduced in all treatments, and magnesium and iron were reduced in the PVC and PS treatments compared to the control. The microplastic-induced changes in biomass or photosynthetic efficiency do not correspond to the changes in crop element concentrations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
