The potential of raw date pits as a natural, widely available and low-cost agricultural waste has been studied in order to adsorb cationic dyes from an aqueous solution. Date pits were characterized by FTIR, SEM, BET, and XRD analysis. To optimize removal of two industrial dyes, basic red 2 (BR2) and methyl violet (MV), from aqueous solution using date pits, response surface methodology (RSM) is employed. Tests were carried out as per central composite design (CCD) with four input parameters namely contact time, temperature, initial concentration of adsorbate, and pH. Second-order polynomial model better fits experimental data for BR2 and MV and optimum values were then determined. In the optimum conditions, kinetic study was conducted and the pseudo-second-order model was found the best fitted model compared to pseudo-first-order model. Moreover, it was shown that intraparticle diffusion was not the sole controlling step and could be associated with other transfer resistance. On other hand, equilibrium isotherms were obtained for BR2 and MV and their maximum adsorption capacities were 92 and 136 mg g -1 respectively. Two-parameter isotherm models like Langmuir, Temkin, Freundlich, Dubinin-Radushkevich, and Halsay were investigated to fit equilibrium data. Three error functions of residual root mean square error, chi-square statistic, and average relative error were used to comfort us in the selected models, which were actually Dubinin-Radushkevich and Langmuir for BR2 and Frendlich, Temkin, and Halsay for MV.

This paper is devoted to the modeling of the pyrolysis process in order to predict mass and heat loss profiles of a used tire sample and ultimately prevent eventual difficulties in pyrolysis reactors. Once assumptions are made, the thermal balances and kinetics of each reaction were written. The resolution of the differential equations allowed us to present the profile of heat variation within the sample as a function of temperature in a fixed bed reactor. The modeling is based on the energy behavior of each reaction, the rate conversion of which was also modeled and compared with that obtained experimentally. There is a satisfactory agreement between the theoretical and the experimental results in one hand and a good fit with experimental and regression results of other researchers in another hand. It was shown in particular, that some exothermic reactions intervene during the pyrolysis of the used tires. Indeed, the exothermic heat at the center of 2 cm particle exceeds 1500 kJ/kg which presents an economic and energetic payoff for the plant. It has also been noted that the small particle size can result in faster heat transfer and shorten the process completion time. At the same time, rapid heat transfer can trigger more endothermic reactions, increasing thus the overall energy consumption of the process., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.)

The treatment and disposal of tyres from vehicles has long been of considerable environmental importance. Studies have been undertaken to reduce their environmental impact. In this study, an alternative gas was produced from automobile tyre wastes by the means of a controlled pyrolysis. To do so, a novel catalytic system was designed with the aim of increasing the rate of conversion and improving the quality of the pyrolysis products. This work aimed also to reduce the severity of the overall reactions, by using powder catalysts (MgO, Al 2 O 3 , CaCO 3 , and zeolite ZSM-5) uniformly distributed on two layers of oyster shells (OS) particles. The catalyst/tyres mass ratio was kept for all the tests at 1/30. The pyrolysis reactor was maintained at 500°C and the influence of each catalyst and of the number of shell beds (0, 1 or 2), on the yield and composition of the derived products, was examined. The gas yields could contribute by 1.2% of total consumption in Tunisia. Furthermore, some combinations could upgrade the derived gas and made it possible to use it as such or with the minimum of post-treatment. It was found that, with the use of supported catalyst, the gas produced is 45% greater compared to classical thermal pyrolysis. The Heating value of the produced gas was also improved by the use of supported catalysts; it was found 16% greater with the use of Al 2 O 3 /OS compared to non-catalytic pyrolysis. When compared to the gas obtained from only one catalytic supported bed, the sulfur content was reduced by 80% with the use of CaCO 3 /OS on two catalytic beds., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Ltd. The effect of hygrothermal conditions (air temperature and relative humidity) on the dehydration of theophylline monohydrate was investigated. Firstly, the equilibrium states of theophylline were investigated. The data from gravimetric analysis at constant temperature and humidity were reported as desorption isotherms. The PXRD analysis was used to identify the different polymorphic forms of theophylline: the monohydrate, the metastable anhydrate, and the stable anhydrate. Solid-solid phase diagrams for two processing times were proposed. Secondly, the dehydration kinetics were studied. The water content evolutions with time were recorded at several temperatures from 20°C to 80°C and several relative humidities from 4% to 50%. Different mathematical models were used to fit the experimental data. The spatially averaged solution of 2D Fickian transient diffusion equation best represented the water mass loss versus time experimental relationship. The dehydration rate constant was found to increase exponentially with air temperature and to decrease exponentially with air relative humidity.

The main goal of this paper is to elaborate a mathematical model that represents the physics and chemistry involved when a small particle of wet sewage sludge is incinerated. Compared to existing models, our study includes both drying and heterogenous combustion of the pyrloysis residue of the processed sludge. This model relies on the assumption of homogeneous composition and temperature for the particle under study. It includes drying, pyrolysis (controlled by a four successives steps reaction pathway) and combustion of the resulting char. The ability of the model is illustrated using it in two different process conditions (representing thermogravemetric analysis and fluidized bed conditions) in order to investigate the influence of the surrounding atmosphere. It is found, that fluidized bed conditions reduce the burnout time of a small particle by enhancing the rate at which heat is transferred to that particle. It is also shown that high heating rates enhance the tar yield.
