Introduction: Head and neck cancers are among the most common diseases in the world, recording an increased number of patients. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the life quality of patients with head and neck cancer in Bandar Abbas, Iran. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 69 patients with head and neck cancer. Data was collected through a UW-QOL4 questionnaire, the demographic information including gender, age, education and job. Information about the disease, including its type, clinical stage, type of treatment applied and cancer site was obtained from patient's medical records. The results were analyzed using repeated measure analysis of variance with a SPSS-20 software, at a significance level below 0.05. Results and discussion: 53 of the participants (76.8%) were men; the mean age of patients was 59.1 ± 13.31 years. The most affected area was the larynx (39.1%); a high percentage of patients were in stage 2 of the disease (44.9%). The mean score of patients' quality of life was 13.88 ± 2.37 during the treatment and 14.78 ± 2.06 after it, namely a statistically significant difference was recorded (P <0.0001). Conclusions: No significant difference between male and female patients was observed in terms of their quality of life, seen as lower during the treatment and improved after it. The problem most frequently mentioned by patients was swallowing, a better quality of life being observed in patients who underwent radiotherapy and chemotherapy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Bisphosphonates (BP) have recently been used in the treatment of bone diseases. The BP-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ) is a severe complication of long-term usage of BP and can lead to serious consequences. This study aimed to evaluate the level of awareness and performance of dentists and senior dental students in Bandar Abbas, Iran, regarding the treatment of patients who take BP. Method: In this cross-sectional study, a questionnaire, based on the standard guidelines, was handed out to dentists and senior dental students in Bandar Abbas city. Variables, such as gender, age, level of awareness, and performance when treating the aforementioned patients were taken into account. The collected data were analyzed using Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Levene, chi-squared, and independent t-test. Result: The performance index was 11.8±2.82 in dentists and 14.29±5.8 in senior dental students which indicates a significant difference between them in terms of performance when treating BRONJ in patients taking BP. However, no significant difference was observed in terms of their knowledge. Conclusion: The level of performance and knowledge in most dentists and dental students was intermediate and policies should be made to raise their abilities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction:Recurrent aphthous ulcers are the most common pathologic conditions of the oral cavity, which despite having clear clinical features, the etiology is unknown. This study aimed to determine the relationship between one of the histocompatibility antigens (HLA DRB1) and its sub-groups with the incidence of recurrent aphthous ulcers in an Iranian population (North East of Iran). Methods: In this case-control study, a total of 72 patients with recurrent aphthous ulcers and 70 healthy subjects in Northeast Iranian population were included. Genotyping was done by polymerase chain reaction-specific sequence primers (PCRSSP) for each sample, according to standard kit protocol (BAG- Germany). Results: In 72 patients with recurrent aphthous ulcers that were included in this study, 26 were male and 46 were female; of the 70 control patients, this difference not significant statistically (P>0.05). The frequency of HLA -DRB1 *16 was 0.7% in the healthy subjects, however frequency of HLA -DRB1 *16 in patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) was 42.36%, and this difference was statistically significant (P=0.03). But, this difference was not observed in other subgroups. Conclusion: The frequency of DRB1 * 16 in the patients with RAS were higher than the group. Therefore, DRB1 * 16 can be suggested as a Predisposing factor for aphthous ulcers patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Amelanotic melanoma is a variant of malignant melanoma comprising 2% to 8% of all malignant melanomas. The amelanotic presentation of melanoma in the oral cavity is extremely rare and has been reported only occasionally in the literature. Moreover, the lack of melanin makes these tumors difficult to diagnose than that of pigmented lesions and the prognosis tends to be poorer.
