In this study, the potential of soil contamination with heavy metals was evaluated, respectively Cd, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn, in the area of the temporary municipal solid waste landfill located in the city of Botosani, Romania. The presence of heavy metals in the investigated area decreased in the sequence (mg/kg): Mn (860) > Zn (93.6) > Ni (48.9) > Cu (30.2) > Pb (20.1) > Cd (0.76), registering a slight increase in the southern part of the deposit as a result of the direction of rainwater flow. The concentrations of heavy metals in the soil in the vicinity of the temporary municipal waste landfill were similar to background levels for agricultural soils in Romania. The quantification of heavy metals in the soil did not show exceedances of the reference concentrations and no environmental pollution with heavy metals was identified.

PLASTIC marine debris ,MICROPLASTICS ,SEWAGE disposal plants ,SEASHELLS ,PLASTIC scrap ,CARDIOVASCULAR system ,MUNICIPAL water supply - Abstract
In recent years, plastic pollution has been brought more and more to the attention of scientists and the general public alike by the increasing number of studies regarding the insidious presence of microplastics in every aspect of human life and in the environment. Macroplastics and large microplastics have a clear direct impact on faunal health and conservation by clogging the digestive systems of affected individuals and even acting as promoters for the introduction and long-distance transport of potential invading species of algae and molluscs. However, the behaviour and the largely unknown long-term effects of microplastics and nanoplastics, which have the ability to break the intestinal barrier and become adsorbed into the circulatory system and tissues of key ecosystem species, may pose an even greater threat to biodiversity conservation. This paper aims to identify the presence of microplastics in two of the components of the Dâmbovi?a River, namely in the water column and in the sediment, in order to identify and later eliminate plastic waste pollution, which would have long-term positive effects for habitat and biodiversity. The collected samples were analysed in the laboratory, and the presence of microplastics was identified in all the water and sediment samples. Also, the abundance of identified microplastics was systematically higher in sediment samples than in water samples, with the highest identified level of microplastics being almost 90 mg/kg of wet sediment and 9 mg/L of water downstream of the municipal wastewater treatment plant. FTIR analysis showed a mix of PE, PP, and PET absorption bands, and the microscopic analysis of microplastic particles retained on micro-cellulose filters has been greatly hampered by the fact that many of the separated particles have irregular shapes, very small sizes, are transparent and colourless, and, for this reason, have been more difficult to identify and quantify. Saanen goats, specialized in milk production, improved in terms of quantity and quality (protein and fat content), are normally milked for 270-300 days with an annual production of 650-1050 l of milk / lactation and an average protein content of 2.9% and fat content of 3.2%. This study was conducted in the first goat farm in Romania that initiated prolonged lactation of goats. The research was carried out on a batch of primiparous goats, maintained in an intensive exploitation system, which after the first calving were subdivided according to milk production measured for a week. Two batches of 128 goats with a production of 3-4 liters/day and 94 goats with a production of over 4 liters/day were established. By modulating the diet and the light regime, the goats were milked continuously for 690 to 742 days, monitoring the amount of milk, protein and lipid levels on a monthly basis. Along with controlled breeding programs, prolonged lactation contributes to ensuring on the domestic market a continuity in the supply of goat's milk, throughout the year. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The research was carried out on a population of Polwarth sheep, intensely inbred belonging to the Research and Development Institute for Sheep and Goats Breeding, Palas - Constanta. Morpho-productive indices, reproduction indices, current number compared to the one acquired in 1995, inbreeding depression, intergenerational depression, inbreeding population, body weight differentiation and quantity of wool in the year of acquisition compared to 2020 were determined. From the presented data it results that the reproduction of the sheep was not affected instead in rams the body weight and the amount of wool decreased. Surprisingly, instead of shrinking and disappearing over time, the herd has increased and continues to grow, contrary to what is known to date from the effect of intense inbreeding on a breed of sheep. LAMB (Meat) ,LAMBS ,SHEEP ,MEAT quality ,ANIMAL weaning ,SHEEP breeding ,BREEDING - Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the effects of age on reproductive indices and on growth performances, carcass and meat quality of Tsigai lambs coming from young females (8 months age), in order to improve meat quality and meat sensory characteristics of lambs. 222 adult ewes and 51 young females were pursued in the breeding and calving season 2020-2021. The fecundity, prolificacy and weaning rate was 78.43%, 105% and 78.57% to young females and 94.60%, 105.24% and 91.40% to adult ewes, respectively. Thirty lambs (L1, n = 14 heads coming from young females and L2, n = 16 heads from adult ewes) were used in the experiment from birth up to end of intensive fattening of 100 days. No significant differences (p > 0.05) were found between the two lots with regard at final weight and average daily gain during fattening period, but significant differences (p < 0.001) were found for average daily gain from birth to the end of fattening. Significant differences (p <0.001) were also recorded between meat from the two groups with regard to juiciness and overall difference. The meat of lambs from L1 has showed improved eating qualities, resulting in a more juicy and tender meat, in which the specific lamb taste was attenuated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Studies in the field of goat breeding have shown that the most widely used and effective way to induce and synchronize estrus in the breeding season is the hormonal method with Chronogest sponges and the administration of Folligon and a prostaglandin. In the present study, we looked at the reproductive performance of a batch of 148 Alpina goats synchronized in April with Chronogest sponges maintained intravaginally for 11 days and the injection of 400 IU Folligon without prostaglandin administration. Artificial insemination with frozen semen was performed 43 +/- 2 hours after the removal of the sponges and the following reproductive aspects were established: the degree of the cervix opening at the time of artificial insemination, ultrasound diagnosis of 50 days gestation after artificial insemination with the identification of cases of pseud-gestation (4.05%), the rate of calving (56.76%) and prolificacy (310.71%). In farm conditions, specific to our country, the exclusion of prostaglandin administration decreases the risk of abortions by lysis of luteal bodies in possibly pregnant goats at the time of treatment and insemination. The ever-increasing requirements for goat meat production have led to create and consolidate a specialized goat population for meat production, well adapted to local environmental conditions, within the Research and Development Institute for Sheep and Goat Breeding - Palas. The new R1 population (75% Boer and 25% Carpatina) showed superior attributes compared to Carpatina breed. During the period of intensive fattening of the kids, the R1 males achieved an average daily gain of 152 grams compared to the group of males from the Carpatina breed, in which the increase was 119 grams/day. The R1 hybrids had 2.75 percentage points more muscle tissue in the carcass and 3.11 percentage points less bones than the Carpatina kids. The adult goats in the newly created population had a body compactness index with values between 84.26 and 94.31 and the muscularity index of the gigot had values of 245.58 - 249.01. In regards to our research was observed the superiority of R1 Boer x Carpatina goats compared to the Carpatina breed regarding to the meat production and the quality of carcass. LAMBS ,ULTRASONIC measurement ,EYE muscles ,LUMBAR vertebrae ,BIRTH weight ,SHEEP breeding - Abstract
The present study was conducted to determine the effect of ram, sex and diet on growth performances of Tsigai lambs - rusty variety from birth up to 5 months. The birth weight, weight at 28 days and weaning weight were observed on 212 lambs coming from 10 rams' groups. At 5 months age, the depth, eye muscle area of Longissimus dorsi, muscle perimeter and the backfat thickness covering this muscle at the cross of sectional area between the 12
th and 13th ribs, and between 3-4 lumbar vertebrae was determined using ultrasonic measurements from 80 lambs (40 male from two lots - L1 and L2 - 20 heads/lot and 40 female - L3) fed with different diets. At this time, the weights of lambs at 5 months were also recorded. The overall men weight of lambs at 5 months was 42.23 kg at L1, 40.18 kg at L2 and 34.58 kg at L3. The weight at 5 months was found to be significantly affected by sex. The diet had no significant effect on growth performances of the lambs. The means for ultrasonic measurement was significantly affected by sex. The variation observed between lots means were significant for eye muscle depth at 3-4 lumbar vertebrae and for eye muscle area, but not significant for backfat thickness, and muscle perimeter. Regarding the phenotypic correlations between ultrasound measurements with weight at 5 months, from a total of 45 traits couples 57.78% are small correlation (0.00-0.30), 20.00% are medium to high correlations (0.31-0.60) and high correlations recorded 22.22 % (0.61-1.00). Important information on body composition of lambs can be obtained practically by ultrasonic measurements on live animals. When combined in a breeding program with lamb market weights, these measurements will provide a way to increase both meat yield and the quality of Tsigai lambs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

The research work aims to optimize the technology of fattening the kids and improving the quality of the carcasses by using the crossbreeding of Carpathian breed with Boer breed. It was made the fattening in intensive system, using two feeding systems: an uniform system of 92 days (with combined fodders) which assured 15.88% PBD and 89 % UN and a differentiated system with 15 days of accommodation, which assured 12.6%PBD and 91% UN, 62 days of effective fattening which assured 15.88%PBD and 89% UN and 15 days of finishing, which assured 12%PBD and 94% UN. The weight in the end of fattening was bigger at the F1 half-breed of Boer x Carpathian comparatively to the kids of Carpathian breed, and there were no differences significant between the feeding systems. The kids of Carpathian breed had the final weight of 30.736 ± 1.0370 kg (lot 1) and 30.857 ± 0.6760 kg (lot 2), the kids of F1 Boer X Carpathian 34.536 ± 1.0460 kg (lot 3) and 34.100 ± 1.1210 kg (lot 4). It is noticed higher daily increasing rates at the F1 half-breed of Boer x Carpathian comparatively to the increasing rates of the kids of Carpathian breed. The daily gain of the kids Carpathian breed was 140 ± 0.0080 g (lot 1) and 134 ± 0.0100 g (lot 2) and at the F1 halfbreed of Boer x Carpathian was 154 ± 0.0060 g (lot 3) and 155 ± 0.0080 g (lot 4), not being differences significant between the feeding systems. The results of experimental slaughtering emphasize bigger carcasses and higher output at the F1 half-breed of Boer x Carpathian. The kids of Carpathian breed had carcasses of 14.20 ± 0.9150 kg and 14.05 ± 0.8975 kg, and F1 half-breed kids 16.25 ± 1.8750 kg and 16.48±1.8950 kg, the value of the slaughtering output was of 46.20 ± 2.9620 % and 45.50 ± 2.9510% at the kids of Carpathian breed, and at the F1 kids of Boer x Carpathian 47.10 ± 2.9741% and 48.30 ± 2.9787%. GOAT milk , *MILK yield , *CROSSBREEDING - Abstract
Due to the raise of interest for goat milk we have been concerned with the increase of milk production from the goats of Carpathian breed (ecotype of Dobrogea) by crosbreeding with Saanen beed and Anglo-Nubian breed. By crossbreeding with milk breeds it was obtained a substantial improvement of the milk production at the obtained half-bred (F1 Saanen x Carpathian and Anglo- Nubian x Carpathian). The milk production and the lactation period increased at the two lots of half-bred, producing a raise of the total quantity of milk, from 235.21± 6.7 liters, in 214 days of lactation, as it was the average production at the effective of goats of Carpathian breed, at a total average milk production of 286.27 ± 5.2 liters, în 229 days of lactation, at F1 half-breds of Saanen x Carpathian and 297.32± 6.2 liters in 231 days of lactation at the half-breds of Anglo-Nubian x Carpathian. The quality indicators of the milk at goats had a trend of raise to the end of the lactation period at all lots, the average values on the whole lactation period of the main components of the milk, fat and protein at the half-bred goat were bigger comparatively to those from Carpathian breed, with 8.49% at fat and 8.72% at protein at F1goats of Saanen x Carpathian and 6.79% at fat and 6.97% at protein at the F1 goats of Anglo-Nubian x Carpathian. GOATS ,SHEEP ,FOOD safety - Abstract
The work aims to respond to the needs of the farmers to optimize their technologies to exploit sheep/goats, in order to increase the productive parameters of the farms, raising the economic efficiency and obtaining competitive products as those made by the farmers from the European Union's countries. It was elaborated a capacity of 150 heads sheep/goats - queen with a free system of maintenance, shelter to which installation for mechanizing the works in sheep/goats breeding and exploitation were installed, in order to raise work productivity, to decrease the costs of production, assuring certain optimal conditions of microclimate, environment protection and assuring the food safety and security of citizens. Before giving the fodders, they had been processed by chopping, grinding, mixing and preparing, operations which determine the raise of alimentary value and palatability of fibrous and gross fodders (fodders from the secondary production, obtained from the cereal crops), the made productive increasing rate was 20-25%, so the expenses beeing justified. FEED utilization efficiency , *SHEEP breeds - Abstract
Due to the raise of interest for the lamb meat we planned to optimize the technology of fattening the lambs and to obtain the improvement of the carcasses the use of crossbreeding the local breeds with sheep breeds that are specialized for the meat production. There was done the fattening in system of 100 days, structured in 3 stages: accommodation, effective fattening and finishing. At the fattening of lambs in intensive system in the beginning of the experiment the lots had similar average body weights, and in the end of fattening there are emphasized big differences between the lots of half-breeds: Texel x Merino half-bred lambs had the weight of 39.90±0.69 kg, the lambs of Merino breed 34.35 ±0.56 kg, Blackface x Ţzgaie 40.02 ± 0.86 kg, half-bred lambs of Palas Meat-Breed X Tzgaie 38.08 ± 0.59 kg, lambs of Tzgaie breed 32.24 ± 0.56 kg, half-bred lambs of Suffolk x Tzurcana 37.92 ± 0.55 kg, lambs of Tzurcana 33.12±2.01kg. At the control slaughtering there were obtained bigger values of the slaughter output and the commercial output at the half-bred lams. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

GOAT meat , *MEAT quality , *GOATHERDS , *AGRICULTURAL productivity , *CATTLE carcasses - Abstract
Due to the increasing interest in the world for the kid meat we intend to optimize the technology of fattening the lambs and to obtain the improvement of the carcasses through the use of the industrial crossbreeding of the Carpathian breed with Boer breed. It was done the fattening in intensive system of 100 days, structured in 3 stages: accommodation, proper fattening and finishing; or semi-intensive fattening of 200 days structured in 3 stages: 1st stage - Stable-staying, divided into two periods, accommodation and growing and fattening; 2nd stage - Grazing, divided into accommodation and growing and fattening; 3rd stage - Stable - staying divided into accommodation and finishing. At the fattening of kids in semi-intensive system in the beginning of the experiment the two lots had similar average body weights but in the end of the fattening it is emphasized a difference of the body weight which is bigger with 15% at the lot of Boer x Carpathian crossbred kids besides the lot of Carpathian kids, obtaining bigger dimensions of the carcasses at Boer x Carpathian kids. There were obtained higher values of the slaughtering output at the Boer x Carpathian crossbred kids, besides of those of kids of Carpathian breed. By cutting the carcasses from the goat youth fattened in semi-intensive system, on graze and in stable, at the experimental lots, with Boer x Carpathians crossbreds registered higher slaughtering and commercial outputs comparative to those made by Carpathian kids. The precocious use of sheep and goat male and female youth at reproduction is a method of intensifying the reproduction through which increases the meat production by achieving a higher number of products and also obtaining one more lactation per exploited sheep or goat, reducing the non-productive period of the females; also, by the precocious introduction to reproduction of the young sheep and goats at the age of 7-10 months the non-productive expenses are avoided by maintaining them in the effective for one year more, because even at the age of 20-22 months, when they are normally used for reproduction, they do not have appropriate reproductive qualities. The researches were made on effectives of sheep and goats (on sheep of Merinos de Palas breed, Palas milk breed, Palas meat breed, prolific population of Palas, Ţurcană breed and on goats of Carpathian breed). At the female lambs which were precociously introduced at reproduction, at the age of 7-10 months, the non-returns had values of 81,25-89,47%, the fecundity of 81,25-89,47%, prolificacy of 105,26-115,38%, and at the young female kids the non-returns had values of 79,92- 83,33%, the fecundity of 76,92-83,33%, the prolificacy of 120,0-130,0%. The reproduction indicators of the sheep and goats which were mounted or artificially inseminated with sperm from the males with the age of 7-10 months were: at the young rams, the fecundity was 55,55-91,30% and prolificacy of 100,0-122,22%, and at the young male goats the fecundity was 71,42-91,30% and prolificacy of 107,69-122,22%. LACTATION ,SHEEP feeding ,LAMBS ,BIRTH weight ,ANIMAL feeds ,ANIMALS - Abstract
For the sheep belonging to the milk population Palas, being in lactation period, there were create, d two types of rations, one of fibrous kind and the other of semi-succutent. At the bimonthly examination (Nica-Dermengi method) it was observed that the fodder type influenced the quantity of milk produced by the sheep belonging to Palas milk population: to the sheep fed with fodder rations, fibrous type, the daily average production of milk increased from 1.154±0.085 liters at the first examination to 1.415±0.082 at the 6th examination; to the sheep fed with fodder rations, semi succulent type, the daily average production of milk increased from 1.045 ± 0.078 liters at the first examination, to 1.233±0.088 liters at the 6th examination. The lambs nursed by the sheep belonging to the 1st group, fed with fibrous type ration had greater difficulties at the age of 21 days and also at weaning, in comparison with the lambs nursed by the sheep fed with semi succulent type ration, although their birth weight was less than the one of the lambs of this group. The structure of fodder rations administrated to the sheep within the nursing period influences the morph productive parameters of these animals, the fodder rations of fibrous type ensuring a greater production of the ship within lactation, in comparison with that of the sheep, which received semi-succulent type, rations. Aim of the current research was to evaluate the effects that crossbreeding Romanian indigenous Carpatina (CA) does with South African meat-specialized Boer (BO) bucks have on the growth rates of the F1 crossbred kids. Researches were carried out at the Research and Development Station for Sheep and Goats from Caransebes. A number of 65 purebred CA does were separated into two groups, first group (n=40) was mated with two purebred BO bucks, and the second group, the control group (CG) was mated with purebred CA bucks. Individual recording of the kids contained data regarding: genotype, birth date and weight, type of kidding (born as singleton or twin), sex, weight at 28 days and at weaning time, 56 days. Average daily gain (ADG) for F1 crossbred was of 225,12 g/day, while kids from the CG, registered on average 159.76 g/day, differences being statistically significant (p<0.001). At weaning, crossbred kids achieved weights of 13.92 kg, while ones from the CG had an average weight of 10.34 kg. Using Boer bucks significantly improves growth rates of crossbred kids, and might prove valuable for the overall returns of the farms that will adopt this crossbreeding scheme. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
