Abstract

Precipitation nowcasting is of great importance for weather forecast users, for activities ranging from outdoor activities and sports competitions to airport traffic management. In contrast to long-term precipitation forecasts which are traditionally obtained from numerical models, precipitation nowcasting needs to be very fast. It is therefore more challenging to obtain because of this time constraint. Recently, many machine learning based methods had been proposed. We propose the use three popular deep learning models (U-net, ConvLSTM and SVG-LP) trained on two-dimensional precipitation maps for precipitation nowcasting. We proposed an algorithm for patch extraction to obtain high resolution precipitation maps. We proposed a loss function to solve the blurry image issue and to reduce the influence of zero value pixels in precipitation maps.

6. Polystyrene (PS) Degradation Induced by Nanosecond Electric Discharge in Air in Contact with PS/Water

Abstract

Water pollution with microplastics has become a significant concern. Conventional treatment methods have proven ineffective, and alternatives are being explored. Herein, we assess the degradation efficiency of polystyrene (PS) by measuring its nanosecond discharge in air in contact with water. Its discharge is characterized during processing, and a transition from streamer-like to spark-like discharge occurs due to the increased electrical conductivity of water. Experiments are conducted at different frequencies, and the highest degradation is achieved at 10 kHz; an 83% polystyrene weight loss is recorded after 5 min of processing. The optical spectra of the discharge show no evidence of C-species, and an FTIR analysis of the processed polystyrene reveals no structural modifications. An NMR analysis shows the presence of ethylbenzene in water. Finally, a mechanism of PS degradation is proposed.

10. ARPEGE Cloud Cover Forecast Post-Processing with Convolutional Neural Network

Abstract

Cloud cover is crucial information for many applications such as planning land observation missions from space. It remains however a challenging variable to forecast, and Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models suffer from significant biases, hence justifying the use of statistical post-processing techniques. In this study, ARPEGE (M\'et\'eo-France global NWP) cloud cover is post-processed using a convolutional neural network (CNN). CNN is the most popular machine learning tool to deal with images. In our case, CNN allows the integration of spatial information contained in NWP outputs. We use a gridded cloud cover product derived from satellite observations over Europe as ground truth, and predictors are spatial fields of various variables produced by ARPEGE at the corresponding lead time. We show that a simple U-Net architecture produces significant improvements over Europe. Moreover, the U-Net outclasses more traditional machine learning methods used operationally such as a random forest and a logistic quantile regression. We introduced a weighting predictor layer prior to the traditional U-Net architecture which produces a ranking of predictors by importance, facilitating the interpretation of the results. Abstract

Nowcasting (or short-term weather forecasting) is particularly important in the case of extreme events as it helps prevent human losses. Many of our activities, however, also depend on the weather. Therefore, nowcasting has shown to be useful in many different domains. Currently, immediate rainfall forecasts in France are calculated using the Arome-NWC model developed by M\'et\'eo-France, which is a complex physical model. Arome-NWC forecasts are stored with a 15 minute time interval. A higher time resolution is, however, desirable for other meteorological applications. Complex model calculations, such as Arome-NWC, can be very expensive and time consuming. A surrogate model aims at producing results which are very close to the ones obtained using a complex model, but with largely reduced calculation times. Building a surrogate model requires only a few calculations with the real model. Once the surrogate model is built, further calculations can be quickly realized. In this study, we propose to build surrogate models for immediate rainfall forecasts with two different approaches: combining Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) and Kriging, or combining POD and Random Forest (RF). We show that results obtained with our surrogate models are not only close to the ones obtained by Arome-NWC, but they also have a higher time resolution (1 minute) with a reduced calculation time., Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

In the field of numerical weather prediction (NWP), the probabilistic distribution of the future state of the atmosphere is sampled with Monte-Carlo-like simulations, called ensembles. These ensembles have deficiencies (such as conditional biases) that can be corrected thanks to statistical post-processing methods. Several ensembles exist and may be corrected with different statistiscal methods. A further step is to combine these raw or post-processed ensembles. The theory of prediction with expert advice allows us to build combination algorithms with theoretical guarantees on the forecast performance. This article adapts this theory to the case of probabilistic forecasts issued as step-wise cumulative distribution functions (CDF). The theory is applied to wind speed forecasting, by combining several raw or post-processed ensembles, considered as CDFs. The second goal of this study is to explore the use of two forecast performance criteria: the Continous ranked probability score (CRPS) and the Jolliffe-Primo test. Comparing the results obtained with both criteria leads to reconsidering the usual way to build skillful probabilistic forecasts, based on the minimization of the CRPS. Minimizing the CRPS does not necessarily produce reliable forecasts according to the Jolliffe-Primo test. The Jolliffe-Primo test generally selects reliable forecasts, but could lead to issuing suboptimal forecasts in terms of CRPS. Abstract

ABSTRACT This study investigates the effects of an open‐to‐air helium plasma jet, generated by sub‐microsecond discharges, on polystyrene (PS) surfaces positioned at distances of 1 and 10 mm from the nozzle. Optical emission spectroscopy revealed that at 1 mm the plasma spectrum is dominated by N₂⁺ emission, while at 10 mm N₂ emission prevails. Surface analysis showed that at 1 mm PS surfaces developed micro‐ and nanostructures with varying compositions, particularly in the outer regions, while at 10 mm the surface exhibited a uniform nanostructure distribution. X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X‐ray diffraction analyses indicated the incorporation of oxygen and nitrogen species and suggested the formation of functionalized graphene/graphite oxide microstructures. 32. Microbiological profile and antibiotic resistance pattern of urinary tract isolates in febrile under-five children in North-Eastern Nigeria

Background: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) remain a common cause of childhood morbidity, if poorly treated or undiagnosed, could result in long-term morbidities e.g. hypertension, failure to thrive and end-stage renal disease (ESRD). An appropriate antimicrobial susceptibility pattern is essential. Objective: The study determined the profile and antibiotic sensitivity patterns of bacterial strains isolated from febrile under-five children in Azare, North-Eastern Nigeria. Methods: 145 febrile under-five children seen in Federal Medical Centre Azare over six months(March to August 2008)were enrolled in a hospital-based prospective study. Urine obtained by midstream and suprapubic bladder aspiration was subjected to urinalysis, urine microscopy, culture and sensitivity. Results: Of the 145 subjects enrolled, 34(23.4%) had UTI;24(70%) males and 10(30%) females .Gram-negative organisms accounted for 67.6%, Gram-positive organisms 32.4% of isolates; Escherichia coli in 12 (35.3%) cultures; Staphylococcus aureus; 11 (32.4%); Klebsiella species; 8 (23.5%).The gram- negative enteric bacilli had a high prevalence of resistance against ampicillin, amoxicillin, nalidixic acid, nitrofurantoin and co-trimoxazole. Conclusion: Escherichia coli was the most prevalent bacterial organisms isolated. Others were Klebsiella, Proteus and Pseudomonas species with Staphyloccocus aureus the only Gram-positive. The most effective agents were ceftriaxone, ciprofloxacin and gentamicin. A higher prevalence of UTIs was found in boys.

34. COVID-19 E TROMBOEMBOLISMO PULMONAR: REVISÃO DE MECANISMOS FISIOPATOLÓGICOS

Abstract

A COVID-19, oriunda do vírus SARS-CoV-2, denominada assim pela OMS (Organização Mundial da Saúde), teve seu surgimento em 2019 na China, espalhando-se pelo mundo sendo responsável por uma extensa pandemia. As manifestações clínicas apresentam-se de formas variadas, desde manifestações leves, até quadros severos. Pode ser observada uma frequência relativamente alta de doença tromboembólica associada ao coronavírus. Desse modo, essa revisão propõe demonstrar a ocorrência do tromboembolismo pulmonar em consequência da COVID-19. Foi realizado uma busca nas bases de dados PubMed, MEDLINE, LILACS e Scielo com o seguinte descritor: “COVID-19 e tromboembolismo pulmonar” entre os anos 2020 e 2022. A partir da pesquisa obteve-se 560 resultados, na qual foram excluídos 483 artigos por triagem de título e leitura de resumo, restando 77 resultados e, após uma nova revisão, 10 artigos foram selecionados para o estudo final. Os mecanismos dos processos tromboembólicos, até o momento não estão bem definidos, porém em infecções graves tem sido atribuída a resposta inflamatória, hipóxia, coagulação intravascular disseminada e imobilização dos pacientes, principalmente hospitalizados em UTI (unidade de terapia intensiva). Com isso, foi possível concluir que a incidência de embolia pulmonar foi maior em pacientes na UTI, do sexo masculino e com idade avançada. Também foi observado que, em alguns casos, a oclusão da artéria pulmonar detectada por estudos de imagem, foi ocasionada por trombos formados in loco, em vez de êmbolos de trombos em veias periféricas como resultado de um processo inflamatório.

Abstract

O conceito de vantagem competitiva não pode ser entendido por meio de uma perspectiva unitária sobre determinada empresa, pois ele é advindo de fatores internos e externos e de atividades singulares. Nesta direção este estudo objetivou identificar as principais vantagens competitivas resultantes do processo de incorporação de uma cooperativa de crédito, por meio do caso de incorporação, ocorrido de uma Unidade de Atendimento em um pequeno município da região celeiro do Rio Grande do Sul, realizado pelo sistema Cresol de cooperativas, compreendendo o período temporal de três anos após a incorporação. As metodologias utilizadas foram a pesquisa bibliográfica e a pesquisa documental aliadas a análise de dados quantitativos e qualitativos, o que possibilitou a estratificação das informações referentes as vantagens competitivas do processo de incorporação. Após a análise conclui-se que o artifício de incorporação, no período temporal analisado, apresentou resultados positivos à cooperativa, tais como: evolução no número de associados e do capital social, aumento nos depósitos à vista, empréstimos e repasses, entre outros. Além disso, a pesquisa enfatiza que o processo de incorporação deve ser visto como uma vantagem competitiva para o cooperativismo, em especial pela sua capacidade em gerar valor e confiança aos associados.
