Abstract

Reconfigurable photonic integrated circuits (PICs) can implement arbitrary operations and signal processing functionalities directly in the optical domain. Run-time configuration of these circuits requires an electronic control layer to adjust the working point of their building elements and make them compensate for thermal drifts or degradations of the input signal. As the advancement of photonic foundries enables the fabrication of chips of increasing complexity, developing scalable electronic controllers becomes crucial for the operation of complex PICs. In this paper, we present an electronic application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) designed for reconfiguration of PICs featuring numerous tuneable elements. Each channel of the ASIC controller independently addresses one optical component of the PIC, as multiple parallel local feedback loops are operated to achieve full control. The proposed design is validated through real-time reconfiguration of a 16-channel silicon photonics adaptive beam coupler. Results demonstrate automatic coupling of an arbitrary input beam to a single-mode waveguide, dynamic compensation of beam wavefront distortions and successful transmission of a 50 Gbit/s signal through an optical free-space link. Abstract

In Free Space Optical (FSO) communication systems, atmospheric turbulence distorts the propagating beams, causing a random fading in the received power. This perturbation can be compensated using a multi-aperture receiver that samples the distorted wavefront on different points and adds the various signals coherently. In this work, we report on an adaptive optical receiver that compensates in real time for scintillation in FSO links. The optical front-end of the receiver is entirely integrated in a silicon photonic chip hosting a 2D Optical Antenna Array and a self-adaptive analog Programmable Optical Processor made of a mesh of tunable Mach-Zehnder interferometers. The photonic chip acts as an adaptive interface to couple turbulent FSO beams to single-mode guided optics, enabling energy and cost-effective operation, scalability to systems with a larger number of apertures, modulation-format and data-protocol transparency, and pluggability with commercial fiber optics transceivers. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed receiver with optical signals at a data rate of 10 Gbit/s transmitted in indoor FSO links where different turbulent conditions, even stronger than those expected in outdoor links of hundreds of meters, are reproduced.

Abstract

Bacterial infections are a common complication in patients with decompensated liver cirrhosis. The complex landscape of cirrhosis, characterized by immune paralysis and an exhausted response to exogenous triggers, explains the higher prevalence of such infections, particularly in advanced disease stages. In clinical practice, the onset of a bacterial infection can lead to further deterioration of hepatic and extra-hepatic function, potentially resulting in acute decompensation or acute-on-chronic liver failure. This has significant clinical implications, particularly for patients awaiting a transplant. In this review, we will discuss the latest evidence on the diagnosis and therapy of bacterial infections in patients with decompensated cirrhosis. Additionally, we will analyze the impact of bacterial infections in the context of liver transplantation, discussing debated topics such as the timing of transplantation in patients with infections, potential implications for prioritization, effects on post-operative recovery, grafts, and patient survival.

Abstract

Free-space optics (FSO) is an attractive technology to meet the ever-growing demand for wireless bandwidth in next generation networks. To increase the spectral efficiency of FSO links, transmission over spatial division multiplexing (SDM) can be exploited, where orthogonal light beams have to be shaped according to suitable amplitude, phase, and polarization profiles. In this work, we show that a programmable photonic circuits, consisting of a silicon photonic mesh of tunable Mach-Zehnder Interferometers (MZIs) can be used as an adaptive multibeam receiver for a FSO communication link. The circuit can self-configure to simultaneously receive and separate, with negligible mutual crosstalk, signals carried by orthogonal FSO beams sharing the same wavelength and polarization. This feature is demonstrated on signal pairs either arriving at the receiver from orthogonal directions (direction-diversity) or being shaped according to different orthogonal spatial modes (mode-diversity), even in the presence of some mixing during propagation. The performance of programmable mesh as an adaptive multibeam receiver is assessed by means of data channel transmission at 10 Gbit/s a wavelength of 1550 nm, but the optical bandwidth of the receiver (>40 nm) allows its use at much higher data rates as well as in wavelength-division multiplexing SDM communication links.

Nel V libro del suo romanzo, Achille Tazio descrive dettagliatamente un quadro che rappresenta il mito di Procne, Filomela e Tereo. Molti studiosi hanno ipotizzato un possibile rapporto con il Tereo di Sofocle, il dramma che nell’antichità ebbe importanza fondamentale per la conoscenza della vicenda. Il presente contributo ridiscute l’intero problema, focalizzandosi soprattutto su due punti. 1) L’ekphrasis di Achille Tazio dà una rappresentazione molto vivida della scena del riconoscimento: con la sua enfasi sull’azione agita, come se i personaggi fossero impegnati in una performance, il dettato del testo evoca chiaramente un contesto teatrale. 2) Negli anni di Sofocle si può ritenere che gli Ateniesi collegassero il mito di Procne e Filomela non solo con l’immagine dell’uccisione di Iti e del banchetto antropofagico (temi molto praticati dai ceramografi), ma anche con la scena del “peplo parlante”, che era riprodotta nelle metope del Partenone. Questa era probabilmente la “scena madre” del Tereo di Sofocle, un drammaturgo molto sensibile alle suggestioni iconografiche. Achille Tazio, che aveva accesso al testo completo del dramma sofocleo, compose la sua ekphrasis avendo negli occhi questa scena.

Abstract

The ECPGR European Evaluation Network (EVA) for Maize involves genebanks, research institutions, and private breeding companies from nine countries focusing on the valorization of maize genetic resources across Europe. This study describes a diverse collection of 626 local landraces and traditional varieties of maize (Zea mays L.) from nine European genebanks, including criteria for selection of the collection and its genetic and phenotypic diversity. High-throughput pool genotyping grouped the landraces into nine genetic groups with a threshold of 0.6 admixture, while 277 accessions were designated admixed and likely to have resulted from previous breeding activities. The grouping correlated well with the geographic origins of the collection, also reflecting the various pathways of introduction of maize to Europe. Phenotypic evaluations of 588 accessions for flowering time and plant architecture in multilocation trials over three years confirmed the great diversity within the collection, although phenotypic clusters only partially correlated with the genetic grouping. The EVA approach promotes conservation of genetic resources and opens an opportunity to increase genetic variability for developing improved varieties and populations for farmers, with better adaptation to specific environments and greater tolerance to various stresses. As such, the EVA maize collection provides valuable sources of diversity for facing climate change due to the varieties’ local adaptation.

Abstract

The treatment of hepatitis C virus (HCV) with direct-acting antivirals (DAA) leads to high sustained virological response (SVR) rates, but hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) risk persists in people with advanced liver disease even after SVR. We weighted the HCC risk in people with cirrhosis achieving HCV eradication through DAA treatment and compared it with untreated participants in the multicenter prospective Italian Platform for the Study of Viral Hepatitis Therapies (PITER) cohort. Propensity matching with inverse probability weighting was used to compare DAA-treated and untreated HCV-infected participants with liver cirrhosis. Kaplan–Meier analysis and competing risk regression analysis were performed. Within the first 36 months, 30 de novo HCC cases occurred in the untreated group (n = 307), with a weighted incidence rate of 0.34% (95%CI: 0.23–0.52%), compared to 63 cases among SVR patients (n = 1111), with an incidence rate of 0.20% (95%CI: 0.16–0.26%). The 12-, 24-, and 36-month HCC weighted cumulative incidence rates were 6.7%, 8.4%, and 10.0% in untreated cases and 2.3%, 4.5%, and 7.0% in the SVR group. Considering death or liver transplantation as competing events, the untreated group showed a 64% higher risk of HCC incidence compared to SVR patients (SubHR 1.64, 95%CI: 1.02–2.62). Other variables independently associated with the HCC occurrence were male sex, increasing age, current alcohol use, HCV genotype 3, platelet count ≤ 120,000/µL, and albumin ≤ 3.5 g/dL. In real-life practice, the high efficacy of DAA in achieving SVR is translated into high effectiveness in reducing the HCC incidence risk.
