Abstract

【Objective】 Excessive fertilization is often used by farmers as an insurance in crop production. It not only wastes resources but also risks environmental pollution and soil degradation. Reducing agrochemical fertilization has hence been mandated in China in developing sustainable agriculture. 【Objective】 Low nutrient use efficiency is a common problem facing agricultural production in China, and improving fertigation is an effective way to improve fertilizer use efficiency and reduce nutrient loss, especially in acidic soils. How irrigation and fertigation combine to affect water and nutrient uptake by plants, however, is an issue poorly understood. Abstract

Avocado (Persea americana) is a tropical fruit that has drawn great interest its oil for foods and cosmetic industries; however, avocado oil processing by-product is a potential source of edible protein. Herein, edible protein was prepared from defatted avocado meal, and it's physicochemical, functional and emulsion properties were investigated. The avocado protein showed U-shaped exhibiting strong effect of pH, and a minimum solubility being observed at pH 4.5, confirming the isoelectric point of avocado protein. Nutritionally, the avocado protein contains all the essential amino acids. Avocado protein provided higher water and oil absorption capacities, higher radical scavenging capacity but lower in-vitro digestibility compared with soy protein. Furthermore, the avocado protein as emulsifier afforded a stability oil-in-water emulsion system, resulting in a greater emulsifying stability than that of soy protein. The present results highlight the potential source of edible protein from avocado oil processing by-products for functional food ingredients.

Abstract

Lots of bananas were wasted before commercialization. It is necessary to search potential industrial applications of banana. In the present study, starches from seven banana cultivars (labeled as A-G) were isolated and then characterized. These starches presented different and irregular shapes, such as sphere, long spheroid and polygonal granules. The distribution of size and analyses of average molecular weight showed more small granules in samples B, D, F and G than other samples. The amylose content varied from 22.59% to 38.40%. The crystal types of these starches were a mixture of B-type and C-type, and the relative crystallinity varied greatly. The differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) results showed that the onset temperature of gelatinization increased as follows: A B E C ≈ D F. The maximum viscosity of banana starch decreased as follows: G C D F E = B A. The in vitro digestibility test showed that the content of resistant starch was very high in banana starches. These results would be useful to the application of those starches in food and nonfood industries.

Abstract

Banana is one of the most important crops in tropical and subtropical regions of China. Fenjiao (Musa Spp. ABB,Pisang Awak subgroup) has been grown by small scale famers because of its stable market price and better sugar-acid blend. However, the traditional Fenjiao variety is susceptible to banana Fusarium wilt, has a high plant height (over 5.0 m), and farmers lack large-scale planting techniques. Based on the traditional Fenjiao variety, we selected ‘Refen 1’ variety through mutagenesis technology, which has low temperature resistance, suitable to marginal soils and relatively low plant height (3.2-4.0 m).This paper mainly introduces the major techniques of propagation, cultivation, and post-harvest stages of ‘Refen 1’ banana, including the selection of explant materials, treatment, disinfection, initial culture, nursery hardening of in vitro-produced banana plants, and transplant of tissue culture seedlings. The major points of the cultivation technology include banana plantation selection and preparation, planting methods, irrigation and fertilizer management, pruning and retaining, and prevention and control of plant diseases and insect pests.

Abstract

In order to solve the problem of waste disposal after banana harvest, we use banana stalk to produce banana stalk organic fertilizer, through a plot experiment. We compare the influence of normal organic fertilizer (Wanlubao) and banana stalk organic fertilizer as base fertilizers on Chinese cabbage growth, and evaluate the economic benefits of banana stalk organic fertilizer. The results show that organic fertilizer has little effect on water content and nutrient content of Chinese cabbage, but has significant effect on plant height and leaf width. Using organic fertilizer can increase the production of Chinese cabbage by 22.50%-43.10%. With 6750 kg/ha normal organic fertilizer, Chinese cabbage gets the highest yield, which reaches 30135 kg/ha, followed by the treatment of 6750 kg/ha stalk organic fertilizer. At farmers’ conventional fertilization level (4500 kg/ha), stalk organic fertilizer can increase the yield by more than 3.50% in comparison with the normal organic fertilizer, and the economic benefit increases by 1800 yuan/ha. As a kind of banana waste cycling product, banana stalk organic fertilizer is of low cost and good effect, and can be used instead of normal organic fertilizer.

Abstract

Effects of banana wilt disease caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense(FOC) on soil nematode community composition were investigated in Hainan province China. The results show that 31 nematode genera in the disease and control regions were identified. The disease area was mainly dominated byAcrobeles, Acrobeloides, Chiloplacus and Aphelenchus, while Pelodera,Protorhabditis, Ditylenchus and Basiria dominated in the control area.Paratylenchus was the dominant genus in both areas. The abundance of total nematodes, bacterivore (10 to 30 cm), plant parasites and omnivores-predators, the values of diversity (H′), maturity index (MI), plant parasite index (PPI), structure index (SI), enrichment index (EI), soil pH, the contents of total organic carbon(TOC), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP) and alkaline nitrogen (AN) in the disease area were significantly lower (P < 0.01) than in the control. However, those of fungivores (10 to 20 cm) and dominance (λ) exhibited quite a reverse result. Abstract

Avocado (Persea americana Mill.) is an important fruit crop commercially grown in tropical and subtropical regions. Despite the importance of avocado, there is relatively little available genomic information regarding this fruit species. In this study, we functionally annotated the full-length avocado transcriptome sequence based on single-molecule real-time sequencing technology, and predicted the coding sequences (CDSs), transcription factors (TFs), and long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) sequences. Moreover, 76,777 simple sequence repeat (SSR) loci detected among the 42,096 SSR-containing transcript sequences were used to develop 149,733 expressed sequence tag (EST)-SSR markers. A subset of 100 EST-SSR markers was randomly chosen for an analysis that detected 15 polymorphicEST-SSR markers, with an average polymorphism information content of 0.45. These 15markers were able to clearly and effectively characterize46 avocado accessions based on geographical origin. In summary, our study is the first to generate a full-length transcriptome sequence and develop and analyze a set of EST-SSR markers in avocado.
