The COVID-19 first case was reported in India on January 30, 2020, and in Chhattisgarh on March 19, 2020, and since then a sharp surge has been noticed. The government of India imposed a nationwide lockdown on March 25, 2020, a complete suspension of human activities, viz., industry, construction, transport, academic institutions, etc., which resulted in an improvement in air quality (a decrease in PM2.5 and PM10, alteration in NO2 and an increase in O3). But the rate of cases of COVID-19 has increased sharply, and eventually, under economic pressure, the lockdown was withdrawn on June 1, 2020, which further accelerated the exponential growth of COVID-19 cases. We noticed that in the Chhattisgarh State of India, the alteration in the air quality index during the lockdown period is continuing even after the restoration of anthropogenic activities. Among PM2.5, PM10, NO2, and O3, the behavior of NO2 was found to be different than others; it was found to increase during the lockdown period but further decreased with the resumption of anthropogenic activities. We conclude that the air quality index has an insignificant impact on COVID-19 infection.

Levels of circulating of sex hormones are associated with glucose metabolism and adiposity, but little is known about their association with ectopic fat. We aimed to characterize the association between circulating sex hormones and liver fat. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis by using data from the Multiethnic Study of Atherosclerosis to assess the association of the circulating levels of bioavailable testosterone, estradiol, dehydroepiandrosterone, and sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) with fatty liver. Fatty liver was defined as a reduction of ≤40 Hounsfield units, measured by computed tomography, in 2835 postmenopausal women and 2899 men (45-84 years old; white, black, Hispanic, or Chinese) at 6 centers in the United States. Results: Women in the highest tertile of bioavailable testosterone were significantly more likely to have fatty liver than women in the lowest tertile (odds ratio, 1.77; 95% confidence interval, 1.07-2.92). We found an even greater difference for level of estradiol (odds ratio, 2.49; 95% confidence interval, 1.41-4.39) after adjusting for age, race/ethnicity, waist-to-hip ratio, hypertension, total and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, smoking, insulin sensitivity, and hormone replacement therapy use. Men in the highest tertile of estradiol level were significantly more likely to have fatty liver than men in the lowest tertile (odds ratio, 2.10; 95% confidence level, 1.29-3.40). Men in the highest tertile of SHBG were less likely to have fatty liver than those in the lowest tertile (odds ratio, 0.46; 95% confidence interval, 0.27-0.77). Other associations between hormone levels and fatty liver were not statistically significant. Conclusions: On the basis of a cross-sectional study, postmenopausal women with high levels of bioavailable testosterone are at greater risk for fatty liver. In men, higher levels of SHBG are associated with reduced risk for fatty liver. Higher levels of estradiol are associated with fatty liver in both sexes. This pattern is consistent with the sex-specific associations of sex hormones with other cardiometabolic risk factors.

Background and aimHypothesizing that intrathoracic fat might exert local effects on the coronary vasculature, we assessed the association of intrathoracic fat volume and its two subcomponents with coronary artery calcification (CAC) in 909 relatively healthy Amish adults.Methods and resultsIntrathoracic fat, which is comprised of fat between the surface of the heart and the visceral epicardium (epicardial fat) and fat around the heart but outside of the fibrous pericardium (pericardial fat), was measured from electron beam CT scans. We examined the association between intrathoracic fat volume and cardiovascular disease risk factors in multivariate regression model. Fat volume in the epicardial and pericardial compartments were highly correlated with each other and with body mass index. Neither CAC extent nor CAC presence (Agatston score > 0) was associated with increased intrathoracic fat volume in sex-stratified models adjusting for age (p > 0.10). Intrathoracic fat volume was significantly correlated with higher systolic/diastolic blood pressure, pulse pressure, fasting glucose, insulin, triglyceride and lower high-density lipoprotein cholesterol in sex-stratified models adjusting for age (p < 0.05). However, associations were attenuated after further adjustment for body mass index.ConclusionsThese data do not provide support for a significant role for intrathoracic fat in the development of CAC.

Abstract Introduction Globally, sexually transmissible infections (STIs) continue to disproportionately affect young people. Regular STI testing is an important public health strategy but remains low among this age group. Raising awareness of testing is an essential step and requires effective interventions designed for young people. To inform the development of effective interventions that promote STI testing among young people, we conducted a systematic literature review to describe the social marketing and visual design components commonly found in STI testing interventions and explore associations of these components with intervention effectiveness. Methods We used a systemic review methodology to identify peer-reviewed articles that met pre-defined inclusion criteria. Social marketing and visual component analyses were conducted using structured data extraction tools and coding schemes, based on the eight key social marketing principles and 28 descriptive dimensions for visual analysis. Results 18 studies focusing on 13 separate interventions met the inclusion criteria. Most interventions used photograph-based images, using conventionally attractive actors, positioned centrally and making direct eye contact to engage the viewer. The majority of interventions featured text sparingly and drew on a range of tones (e.g. serious, humorous, positive, reassuring, empowering and informative) and three interventions used sexualised content. Four articles explicitly stated that the interventions was informed by social marketing principles, with two explicitly referencing all eight principles. Around half of the articles reported using a formal theoretical framework, but most were considered to have theoretical constructs implicit in interventions materials. Four articles provided detailed information regarding developmental consumer research or pre-testing. All articles suggested segmentation and development of materials specifically for young people. Explicit consideration of motivation and competition was lacking across all articles. This study found that there were some design elements common to interventions which were considered more effective. High social marketing complexity (where interventions met at least seven of the 11 criteria for complexity) seemed to be associated with more effective interventions. Conclusions Our findings suggest that the incorporation of social marketing principles, could be more important for intervention effectiveness than specific elements of visual design. Effective and systematic use of social marketing principles may help to inform future evidence-informed and theoretically based interventions and should be employed within sexual health improvement efforts.

The northern area of Pakistan, Gilgit Baltistan (GB), has huge tourist potential due to its exotic mountain beauty. According to the GB Tourism Department, a large number of tourists (around 200651) visit GB every year from across the country. Due to a large influx of tourists in the area both positive and negative impacts have been felt especially on the environment and on the local communities. The environmental impacts of tourism were investigated in this research in two districts of GB. Three villages were selected from each of the districts of Hunza and Diamer as the basis of this research. This study was based on the perceptions and attitudes of the respondents. The total number of questionnaires completed was 340 filled from different respondent categories. Results showed that deforestation, loss of biodiversity, generation of solid waste, water, air and noise pollution, damage cultural and heritage sites and are the main environmental issues caused by tourism activities in the villages in these districts. About 42% of respondents said that deforestation and loss of biodiversity were high in the Diamer district while in Hunza 39% of respondents said that solid waste generation was high. Similarly, 21% respondents in Hunza and 14% respondents in Diamer agreed that water pollution is caused by tourism activities. Microbial analysis of water confirmed the presence of Salmonella typhi, E. coli and Enterobacter sp. There were positive impacts of tourism with results revealing that 87% of villagers and 98% of businessmen responded that tourism had provided them with jobs and business during the peak tourism season. Hotels and restaurants are the main source of jobs in GB mainly as porters and guides. According to the data collected dry fruits, medicinal herbs, gemstones and handicrafts provided considerable attractions for tourists. It is recommended that a combined effort be made by the local communities, tourism departments and other Govt. Agencies to ensure the cleanliness of tourist attractions.

Rationale and Objectives: Few data were available regarding the underlying burden of specific plaque types with increasing ages. The aim of this study was to assess the relationship of coronary artery calcium (CAC) score with total coronary plaque burden and the difference of underlying coronary plaque composition across differing aging groups using 64-slice multidetector computed tomography. Materials and Methods: Multidetector computed tomographic images of 781 consecutive patients were evaluated using a 15-coronary segment model. Segment involvement score (the total number of segments with any plaque), segment stenosis score (the sum of maximal stenosis score per segment), total plaque score (the sum of the plaque amount per segment), and plaque composition were measured to compare with total CAC scores stratified by age tertile (lowest [n = 274], <55 years; middle [n = 242], 55-65 years; highest [n = 265], >65 years). Results: The mean age of the study population was 59 ± 13 years (481 men [62%]). With increasing age, higher segment involvement scores, segment stenosis scores, and total plaque scores were noted. Plaque burden was correlated significantly with total CAC scores in all tertiles. The percentage of partially calcified (P < .001) and calcified (P < .001) plaque increased with age, and in the highest age tertile, 87% of plaque contained calcium (calcified or mixed), compared to only 63% in the younger patients (P < .001). Those aged >65 years were highly unlikely to have isolated noncalcified plaque (in the setting of a calcium score of 0). Younger patients were 10 times more likely to have isolated noncalcified plaque (P < .001). Conclusions: The absence of CAC strongly excludes obstructive disease, and CAC predicts the presence of coronary atherosclerotic plaque. However, the absence of any CAC does not exclude the presence of coronary atherosclerotic plaque, especially in patients aged <55 years. Plaque composition shifted from noncalcified to calcified plaque with increasing age, which may affect the vulnerability of these lesions over time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Background The published literature regarding the relationships between retinol-binding protein 4 (RBP4) and cardiometabolic risk factors and subclinical atherosclerosis is conflicting, likely due, in part, to limitations of frequently used RBP4 assays. Prior large studies have not utilized the gold-standard western blot analysis of RBP4 levels. Methods Full-length serum RBP4 levels were measured by western blot in 709 postmenopausal women screened for the Kronos Early Estrogen Prevention Study. Cross-sectional analyses related RBP4 levels to cardiometabolic risk factors, carotid artery intima-media thickness (CIMT), and coronary artery calcification (CAC). Results The mean age of women was 52.9 (± 2.6) years, and the median RBP4 level was 49.0 (interquartile range 36.9-61.5) μg/mL. Higher RBP4 levels were weakly associated with higher triglycerides (age, race, and smoking-adjusted partial Spearman correlation coefficient = 0.10; P = 0.01), but were unrelated to blood pressure, cholesterol, C-reactive protein, glucose, insulin, and CIMT levels (all partial Spearman correlation coefficients ≤0.06, P > 0.05). Results suggested a curvilinear association between RBP4 levels and CAC, with women in the bottom and upper quartiles of RBP4 having higher odds of CAC (odds ratio [95% confidence interval] 2.10 [1.07-4.09], 2.00 [1.02-3.92], 1.64 [0.82-3.27] for the 1st, 3rd, and 4th RBP4 quartiles vs. the 2nd quartile). However, a squared RBP4 term in regression modeling was non-significant (P = 0.10). Conclusions In these healthy, recently postmenopausal women, higher RBP4 levels were weakly associated with elevations in triglycerides and with CAC, but not with other risk factors or CIMT. These data using the gold standard of RBP4 methodology only weakly support the possibility that perturbations in RBP4 homeostasis may be an additional risk factor for subclinical coronary atherosclerosis. Background: Anemia is frequently observed as a comorbidity in atrial fibrillation (AF), especially in elderly patients and in those on anticoagulation. This has been associated with poor clinical outcomes. We aim to investigate the impact of anemia on clinical outcomes in patients with AF on oral anticoagulation., Methods: We comprehensively searched PubMed, WOS, SCOPUS, EMBASE, and CENTRAL through March 2024 and conducted a prognostic systematic review and meta-analysis. All analyses were performed using R V. 4.3.1. This meta-analysis was registered at PROSPERO (CRD42024556023)., Results: We included 23 studies comprising 286,781 patients for analysis. Anemia had a significant association with an 84% increase in risk of major bleeding (HR: 1.84 with 95% CI [1.59, 2.13], p < 0.01), a 32% increase in the risk of intracranial hemorrhage (HR: 1.32 with 95% CI [1.10, 1.58], p < 0.01), a 98% increase in the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding (HR: 1.98 with 95% CI [1.67, 2.35], p < 0.01), and a 91% increase in the risk of all-cause mortality (HR: 1.91 with 95% CI [1.46, 2.51], p < 0.01). However, the impact of anemia did not significantly affect the risk of stroke, transient ischemic stroke (TIA), or systemic embolism (HR: 1.07 with 95% CI [0.93, 1.22], p = 0.36)., Conclusion: Anemia was significantly associated with an increased risk of major bleeding, intracranial hemorrhage, gastrointestinal bleeding, and all-cause mortality. Malachite green (MG) is used as a dye for materials such as wood, cotton, and nylon, and is used in aquaculture to prevent fungal and protozoan diseases. However, it is highly toxic, with carcinogenic, mutagenic, and teratogenic properties, resulting in bans worldwide. Despite this, MG is still frequently used in many countries due to its efficacy and economy. MG is persistent in the environment and so requires degradative intervention. In this work we isolated Bacillus pacificus ROC1 strain from a salt flat in Pakistan that had the ability to aerobically detoxify MG, as determined by bacterio- and phyto-toxicity assays. We demonstrate immobilized B. pacificus ROC1 can effectively detoxify MG, which highlights a potential method for its biodegradation. Genomic sequencing identified three candidate azo-reductases within B. pacificus ROC1 that could be responsible for the MG-degrading activity. These were cloned, expressed and purified from Escherichia coli, with one (AzrC), catalyzing the reduction of MG to leuco-MG in vitro. AzrC was crystallised and MG was captured within the active site in a Michaelis complex, providing structural insight into the reduction mechanism. Altogether, this work identifies a bacterium capable of aerobically degrading a major industrial pollutant and characterizes the molecular basis for this activity., Competing Interests: Declarations. Biostimulants are obtained from various sources like plants, animals, microorganisms, and industrial by-products as well as waste material. Their utilization in agriculture practices is being increased that is giving positive results. The purpose of the current study was to use plant-derived smoke (SMK) solution and biogas digestate (BGD) slurry as biostimulant to elucidate their impact on potato ( Solanum tuberosum ) performance. The experiment was conducted in lab as well as field conditions, and SMK and BGD solutions were prepared in varying concentrations such as SMK 1:500, SMK 1:250, BGD 50:50, and BGD 75:25. Foliar applications were performed thrice during experiments and data were collected related to photosynthesis, growth, pigments, and genome-wide methylation profiling. Net photosynthesis rate ( A ) and water use efficiency (WUE) were found higher in SMK- and BGD-treated lab and field grown plants. Among pigments, BGD-treated plants depicted higher levels of Chl a and Chl b while SMK-treated plants showed higher carotenoid levels. Alongside, enhancement in growth-related parameters like leaf number and dry weight was also observed in both lab- and field-treated plants. Furthermore, DNA methylation profile of SMK- and BGD-treated plants depicted variation compared to control. DNA methylation events increased in all the treatments compared to control except for SMK 1:500. These results indicate that smoke and slurry both act as efficient biostimulants which result in better performance of plants. Biostimulants also affected the genome-wide DNA methylation profile that resultantly might have changed the plant gene expression profiling and played its role in plant responsiveness to these biostimulants. However, there is need to elucidate a possible synergistic effect of SMK and BGD on plant growth along with gene expression profiling.

Introduction: Despite the popularity and potential protective effects of intermittent fasting (IF) against metabolic disorders, more human trials must be conducted to highlight its effects on human health. Therefore, the present trial aimed to investigate the effect of IF on the body composition, health markers, and memory status of obese and overweight adults., Methods: A parallel randomised controlled trial was conducted in Lahore, Pakistan, with 30 participants recruited from each of the three arms (regular diet, customised diet, and IF group) with a follow-up period of 12 weeks., Results: There was no significant difference in the mean percentage change in BMI at the end of the study period (p = 0.55). The IF group exhibited a negative median change (-4.41%) in systolic blood pressure compared with the other two groups (p = 0.014), with no difference among the groups in diastolic blood pressure or blood sugar levels (p > 0.05). The percentage change in waist circumference was more significant in the IF group than in the control group, with a significant improvement in the median percentage change in total cholesterol, LDL, triglyceride, and HDL levels (p < 0.05) as well as in the memory score (p < 0.05)., Conclusion: This study revealed that IF helps improve participants' lipid parameters, systolic blood pressure, and memory status., Trial Registration: The present study is registered at the registry of Clinicaltrials.gov with identity number NCT05521945 and registration date 30/08/22., Competing Interests: Declarations. Background: Contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN) is associated with increased mortality and morbidity in patients undergoing coronary angiography (CAG) and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). We aimed to assess the latest evidence on the preventive effects of nitric oxide (NO) donors in CIN patients undergoing CAG/PCI., Methods: We conducted a comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis of RCTs from PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Embase, and Cochrane searches until May 5th, 2024. Dichotomous data were pooled using risk ratio (RR), and continuous data were pooled using mean difference (MD), both with a 95% confidence interval (CI), using (R version 4.3)., Results: Our analysis included 13 RCTs encompassing 3,550 patients. NO donors were significantly associated with a decreased incidence of CIN compared to placebo either as an oral administration (RR: 0.33 with 95% CI [0.26, 0.42], P < 0.01) or IV infusions (RR: 0.56 with 95% CI [0.40, 0.78], P < 0.01). Moreover, NO donors were significantly associated with decreased serum creatinine levels compared to placebo either as an oral administration (MD: - 0.07 with 95% CI [- 0.10, - 0.04], P < 0.01) or IV infusions (MD: - 0.07 with 95% CI [- 0.09, - 0.04], P < 0.01). In terms of safety, NO donors were significantly associated with a decreased incidence of major adverse cardiac events (MACE) compared to placebo as an oral administration (RR: 0.64 with 95% CI [0.45, 0.89], P < 0.01). However, there was no significant difference between NO donors as IV infusions and placebo in MACE (RR: 0.68 with 95% CI [0.38, 1.21], P = 0.18). Finally, NO donors were significantly associated with a decreased incidence of all-cause mortality compared to placebo as an oral administration (RR: 0.58 with 95% CI [0.36, 0.94], P = 0.03). Nevertheless, there was no statistically significant difference in all-cause mortality between IV infusions of NO donors and placebo (RR: 1.84 with 95% CI [0.40, 8.52], P = 0.44)., Conclusion: NO donors as adjunct therapy are associated with reduced incidence of CIN and decreased serum creatinine levels, either as an oral or IV administration. Anxiety is a common psychological disorder associated with other mental disorders, with depression being the most common comorbidity. Few studies have examined the neural mechanisms underlying anxiety after controlling for depression. This study aimed to explore whether there are differences in cortical activation in anxiety patients with different severities whose depression are normal. In the current study, depression levels were normal for 366 subjects-139 healthy subjects, 117 with mild anxiety, and 110 with major anxiety. Using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and a verbal fluency task (VFT) to test subjects' anxiety and depression and cognitive function, respectively. A 53-channel guided near-infrared spectroscopic imaging technology (fNIRS) detected the concentration of oxyhemoglobin (oxy-Hb). Correlation analysis between anxiety severity and oxy-Hb concentration in the brain cortex was performed, as well as ANOVA analysis of oxy-Hb concentration among the three anxiety severity groups. The results showed that anxiety severity was significantly and negatively correlated with oxy-Hb concentrations in the left frontal eye field (lFEF) and in the right dorsolateral prefrontal area (rDLPFC). The oxy-Hb concentration in the lFEF and the rDLPFC were significantly lower in the major anxiety disorder group than that in the control group. This suggests that decreased cortical activity of the lFEF and rDLPFC may be neural markers of anxiety symptoms after controlling for depression. Research in Positive Psychology has indicated a correlation between Psychological Capital (PsyCap) and Mental health (MH). However, the specific contribution of Perceived Social Support (PSS) in the connection between PsyCap and MH, particularly within higher education, remains uninvestigated. This study investigated how PSS could mediate the effect of PsyCap on students' MH using a cross-sectional research design. The sample encompassed 443 undergraduate graduate students at Huazhong University of Science and Technology in Wuhan, China. Results from Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) showed that both PsyCap (β = 0.815, t = 31.074, p < 0.000) and PSS (β = 0.405, t = 28.051, p < 0.000) have a positive impact on students' MH. Additionally, PSS was identified as a significant mediator in relation to students' MH (b = 0.080, t = 2.319, p < 0.020). This study emphasizes the importance of developing these factors in educational and support programs to enhance students' well-being. Background: Circulating immune cells have gained interest as biomarkers of hepatic steatosis. Data on the relationships between immune cell subsets and early-stage steatosis in population-based cohorts are limited., Methods: This study included 1,944 asymptomatic participants of the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA) with immune cell phenotyping and computed tomography measures of liver fat. Participants with heavy alcohol use were excluded. A liver-to-spleen ratio Hounsfield units (HU) <1.0 and liver attenuation <40 HU were used to diagnose liver fat presence and >30% liver fat content, respectively. Logistic regression estimated cross-sectional associations of immune cell subsets with liver fat parameters adjusted for risk factors. We hypothesized that higher proportions of non-classical monocytes, Th1, Th17, and memory CD4 + T cells, and lower proportions of classical monocytes and naive CD4 + T cells, were associated with liver fat. Exploratory analyses evaluated additional immune cell phenotypes (n = 19)., Results: None of the hypothesized cells were associated with presence of liver fat. Higher memory CD4 + T cells were associated with >30% liver fat content, but this was not significant after correction for multiple hypothesis testing (odds ratio (OR): 1.31, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.03, 1.66). In exploratory analyses unadjusted for multiple testing, higher proportions of CD8 + CD57 + T cells were associated with liver fat presence (OR: 1.21, 95% CI: 1.02, 1.44) and >30% liver fat content (OR: 1.34, 95% CI: 1.07, 1.69)., Conclusions: Higher circulating memory CD4 + T cells may reflect liver fat severity. Background: Tick control is mostly hampered by the rise of acaricide-resistant tick populations. Significant efforts have focused on developing alternative control methods, including cross-species protective and/or cocktail-based anti-tick vaccines, to achieve protection against various tick species., Methods: In this study, full-length open reading frames encoding subolesin (SUB) from Rhipicephalus microplus and ferritin 2 (FER2) from Hyalomma anatolicum as well as the partial 60S acidic ribosomal protein (P0) from R. microplus were cloned, expressed in Escherichia coli and used as vaccine antigens against Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato (R. sanguineus s.l.) infestation in rabbits., Results: In silico analyses revealed that the SUB, P0 and FER2 proteins were antigenic and displayed limited similarity to the host's homologous proteins. The proteins shared identities of 97.5%, 100% and 89.5% with their SUB, P0 and FER2 R. sanguineus s.l. orthologous sequences, respectively. Antibodies against each recombinant protein cross-recognized the native proteins in the different tissues and developmental stages of R. sanguineus s.l. Overall efficacy of the SUB, FER2 and cocktail (SUB+FER2+P0) vaccines against R. sanguineus s.l. infestation was 86.3%, 95.9% and 90.9%, respectively., Conclusions: Both mono-antigen and the cocktail anti-tick vaccines affected the biological parameters of R. sanguineus s.l. infestation in the rabbit model, which could be extrapolated to its infested host under natural conditions. These findings support the possibility of using mono-antigenic and cocktail-based vaccines for large-scale anti-tick vaccine development against multiple tick species., (© 2023. The Author(s).)
