1. Distribution learning via neural differential equations: minimal energy regularization and approximation theory

Abstract: Neural ordinary differential equations (ODEs) provide expressive representations of invertible transport maps that can be used to approximate complex probability distributions, e.g., for generative modeling, density estimation, and Bayesian inference. We show that for a large class of transport maps $T$, there exists a time-dependent ODE velocity field realizing a straight-line interpolation $(1-t)x + tT(x)$, $t \in [0,1]$, of the displacement induced by the map. Moreover, we show that such velocity fields are minimizers of a training objective containing a specific minimum-energy regularization. We then derive explicit upper bounds for the $C^k$ norm of the velocity field that are polynomial in the $C^k$ norm of the corresponding transport map $T$; in the case of triangular (Knothe--Rosenblatt) maps, we also show that these bounds are polynomial in the $C^k$ norms of the associated source and target densities. Combining these results with stability arguments for distribution approximation via ODEs, we show that Wasserstein or Kullback--Leibler approximation of the target distribution to any desired accuracy $\epsilon > 0$ can be achieved by a deep neural network representation of the velocity field whose size is bounded explicitly in terms of $\epsilon$, the dimension, and the smoothness of the source and target densities. The same neural network ansatz yields guarantees on the value of the regularized training objective.

2. An orphan flare from a plasma blob crossing the broad-line region ?

Abstract: The blazar 3C 279 is well known for its prolific emission of rapid flares. A particular event occurred on 12/20/2013, exhibiting a large flux increase with a doubling time scale of a few hours, a very hard gamma-ray spectrum, and a time-asymmetric light curve with slow decay, but no significant variations detected in the optical range. We propose a novel scenario to interpret this flare, based on two emission zones, a stationary blob and a moving plasma blob. The stationary blob, located within the BLR, accounts for the low-state emission. The moving blob decouples from the stationary zone, accelerates and crosses the BLR. The high-energy flare is attributed to the variable external Compton emission as the blob moves through the BLR, while variations in the synchrotron emission are negligible. Abstract: The colliding-wind binary system $\eta$ Carinae has been identified as a source of high-energy (HE, below $\sim$100\,GeV) and very-high-energy (VHE, above $\sim$100\,GeV) gamma rays in the last decade, making it unique among these systems. With its eccentric 5.5-year-long orbit, the periastron passage, during which the stars are separated by only $1-2$\,au, is an intriguing time interval to probe particle acceleration processes within the system. In this work, we report on an extensive VHE observation campaign that for the first time covers the full periastron passage carried out with the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) in its 5-telescope configuration with upgraded cameras. VHE gamma-ray emission from $\eta$ Carinae was detected during the periastron passage with a steep spectrum with spectral index $\Gamma= 3.3 \pm 0.2_{\mathrm{stat}} \, \pm 0.1_{\mathrm{syst}}$. Together with previous and follow-up observations, we derive a long-term light curve sampling one full orbit, showing hints of an increase of the VHE flux towards periastron, but no hint of variability during the passage itself. An analysis of contemporaneous Fermi-LAT data shows that the VHE spectrum represents a smooth continuation of the HE spectrum. From modelling the combined spectrum we conclude that the gamma-ray emission region is located at distances of ${\sim}10 - 20$\,au from the centre of mass of the system and that protons are accelerated up to energies of at least several TeV inside the system in this phase., Comment: Accepted at A&A; 11 pages, 9 figures

4. Statistical Learning Theory for Neural Operators

Abstract: We present statistical convergence results for the learning of (possibly) non-linear mappings in infinite-dimensional spaces. Specifically, given a map $G_0:\mathcal X\to\mathcal Y$ between two separable Hilbert spaces, we analyze the problem of recovering $G_0$ from $n\in\mathbb N$ noisy input-output pairs $(x_i, y_i)_{i=1}^n$ with $y_i = G_0 (x_i)+\varepsilon_i$; here the $x_i\in\mathcal X$ represent randomly drawn 'design' points, and the $\varepsilon_i$ are assumed to be either i.i.d. white noise processes or subgaussian random variables in $\mathcal{Y}$. We provide general convergence results for least-squares-type empirical risk minimizers over compact regression classes $\mathbf G\subseteq L^\infty(X,Y)$, in terms of their approximation properties and metric entropy bounds, which are derived using empirical process techniques. This generalizes classical results from finite-dimensional nonparametric regression to an infinite-dimensional setting. As a concrete application, we study an encoder-decoder based neural operator architecture termed FrameNet. Assuming $G_0$ to be holomorphic, we prove algebraic (in the sample size $n$) convergence rates in this setting, thereby overcoming the curse of dimensionality. To illustrate the wide applicability, as a prototypical example we discuss the learning of the non-linear solution operator to a parametric elliptic partial differential equation.

5. A Comprehensive Hadronic Code Comparison for Active Galactic Nuclei

Abstract: We perform the first dedicated comparison of five hadronic codes (AM$^3$, ATHE$\nu$A, B13, LeHa-Paris, and LeHaMoC) that have been extensively used in modeling of the spectral energy distribution (SED) of jetted active galactic nuclei. The purpose of this comparison is to identify the sources of systematic errors (e.g., implementation method of proton-photon interactions) and to quantify the expected dispersion in numerical SED models computed with the five codes. The outputs from the codes are first tested in synchrotron self-Compton scenarios that are the simplest blazar emission models used in the literature. We then compare the injection rates and spectra of secondary particles produced in pure hadronic cases with monoenergetic and power-law protons interacting on black-body and power-law photon fields. We finally compare the photon SEDs and the neutrino spectra for realistic proton-synchrotron and leptohadronic blazar models. We find that the codes are in excellent agreement with respect to the spectral shape of the photons and neutrinos. There is a remaining spread in the overall normalization that we quantify, at its maximum, at the level of $\pm 40\%$. Abstract: Owing to their rapid cooling rate and hence loss-limited propagation distance, cosmic-ray electrons and positrons (CRe) at very high energies probe local cosmic-ray accelerators and provide constraints on exotic production mechanisms such as annihilation of dark matter particles. We present a high-statistics measurement of the spectrum of CRe candidate events from 0.3 to 40 TeV with the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.), covering two orders of magnitude in energy and reaching a proton rejection power of better than $10^{4}$. The measured spectrum is well described by a broken power law, with a break around 1 TeV, where the spectral index increases from $\Gamma_1 = 3.25$ $\pm$ 0.02 (stat) $\pm$ 0.2 (sys) to $\Gamma_2 = 4.49$ $\pm$ 0.04 (stat) $\pm$ 0.2 (sys). Apart from the break, the spectrum is featureless. 7. On the mean field limit of consensus based methods

Abstract: Consensus based optimization (CBO) employs a swarm of particles evolving as a system of stochastic differential equations (SDEs). Recently, it has been adapted to yield a derivative free sampling method referred to as consensus based sampling (CBS). In this paper, we investigate the ``mean field limit'' of a class of consensus methods, including CBO and CBS. This limit allows to characterize the system's behavior as the number of particles approaches infinity. Building upon prior work such as (Huang and Qiu, 2022), we establish the existence of a unique, strong solution for these finite-particle SDEs. We further provide uniform moment estimates, which allow to show a Fokker-Planck equation in the mean-field limit. Finally, we prove that the limiting McKean-Vlasov type SDE related to the Fokker-Planck equation admits a unique solution., Comment: 34 pages

Abstract: We study two-stage committee elections where voters have dynamic preferences over candidates; at each stage, a committee is chosen under a given voting rule. We are interested in identifying a winning committee for the second stage that overlaps as much as possible with the first-stage committee. We show a full complexity dichotomy for the class of Thiele rules: this problem is tractable for Approval Voting (AV) and hard for all other Thiele rules (including, in particular, Proportional Approval Voting and the Chamberlin-Courant rule). We extend this dichotomy to the greedy variants of Thiele rules. We also explore this problem from a parameterized complexity perspective for several natural parameters. Abstract: The Tarantula Nebula in the Large Magellanic Cloud is known for its high star formation activity. At its center lies the young massive star cluster R136, providing a significant amount of the energy that makes the nebula shine so brightly at many wavelengths. Recently, young massive star clusters have been suggested to also efficiently produce high-energy cosmic rays, potentially beyond PeV energies. Here, we report the detection of very-high-energy $\gamma$-ray emission from the direction of R136 with the High Energy Stereoscopic System, achieved through a multicomponent, likelihood-based modeling of the data. This supports the hypothesis that R136 is indeed a very powerful cosmic-ray accelerator. Moreover, from the same analysis, we provide an updated measurement of the $\gamma$-ray emission from 30 Dor C, the only superbubble detected at TeV energies presently. The $\gamma$-ray luminosity above $0.5\,\mathrm{TeV}$ of both sources is $(2-3)\times 10^{35}\,\mathrm{erg}\,\mathrm{s}^{-1}$. This exceeds by more than a factor of 2 the luminosity of HESS J1646$-$458, which is associated with the most massive young star cluster in the Milky Way, Westerlund 1. Furthermore, the $\gamma$-ray emission from each source is extended with a significance of $>3\sigma$ and a Gaussian width of about $30\,\mathrm{pc}$. For 30 Dor C, a connection between the $\gamma$-ray emission and the nonthermal X-ray emission appears likely. Abstract: PSR B1259-63 is a gamma-ray binary system that hosts a pulsar in an eccentric orbit, with a 3.4 year period, around an O9.5Ve star. At orbital phases close to periastron passages, the system radiates bright and variable non-thermal emission. We report on an extensive VHE observation campaign conducted with the High Energy Stereoscopic System, comprised of ~100 hours of data taken from $t_p-24$ days to $t_p+127$ days around the system's 2021 periastron passage. We also present the timing and spectral analyses of the source. The VHE light curve in 2021 is consistent with the stacked light curve of all previous observations. Within the light curve, we report a VHE maximum at times coincident with the third X-ray peak first detected in the 2021 X-ray light curve. In the light curve -- although sparsely sampled in this time period -- we see no VHE enhancement during the second disc crossing. In addition, we see no correspondence to the 2021 GeV flare in the VHE light curve. The VHE spectrum obtained from the analysis of the 2021 dataset is best described by a power law of spectral index $\Gamma = 2.65 \pm 0.04_{\text{stat}}$ $\pm 0.04_{\text{sys}}$, a value consistent with the previous H.E.S.S. observations of the source. We report spectral variability with a difference of $\Delta \Gamma = 0.56 ~\pm~ 0.18_{\text{stat}}$ $~\pm~0.10_{\text{sys}}$ at 95% c.l., between sub-periods of the 2021 dataset. We also find a linear correlation between contemporaneous flux values of X-ray and TeV datasets, detected mainly after $t_p+25$ days, suggesting a change in the available energy for non-thermal radiation processes. We detect no significant correlation between GeV and TeV flux points, within the uncertainties of the measurements, from $\sim t_p-23$ days to $\sim t_p+126$ days. Abstract: The nearby elliptical galaxy M87 contains one of the only two supermassive black holes whose emission surrounding the event horizon has been imaged by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT). In 2018, more than two dozen multi-wavelength (MWL) facilities (from radio to gamma-ray energies) took part in the second M87 EHT campaign. The goal of this extensive MWL campaign was to better understand the physics of the accreting black hole M87*, the relationship between the inflow and inner jets, and the high-energy particle acceleration. Understanding the complex astrophysics is also a necessary first step towards performing further tests of general relativity. The MWL campaign took place in April 2018, overlapping with the EHT M87* observations. We present a new, contemporaneous spectral energy distribution (SED) ranging from radio to very high energy (VHE) gamma-rays, as well as details of the individual observations and light curves. We also conduct phenomenological modelling to investigate the basic source properties. We present the first VHE gamma-ray flare from M87 detected since 2010. The flux above 350 GeV has more than doubled within a period of about 36 hours. We find that the X-ray flux is enhanced by about a factor of two compared to 2017, while the radio and millimetre core fluxes are consistent between 2017 and 2018. We detect evidence for a monotonically increasing jet position angle that corresponds to variations in the bright spot of the EHT image. Our results show the value of continued MWL monitoring together with precision imaging for addressing the origins of high-energy particle acceleration. While we cannot currently pinpoint the precise location where such acceleration takes place, the new VHE gamma-ray flare already presents a challenge to simple one-zone leptonic emission model approaches, and emphasises the need for combined image and spectral modelling., Comment: 46 pages, 23 figures, accepted by Astronomy & Astrophysics on August. 29, 2024

Abstract: Failures in safety-critical Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), both software and hardware-related, can lead to severe incidents impacting physical infrastructure or even harming humans. As a result, extensive simulations and field tests need to be conducted, as part of the verification and validation of system requirements, to ensure system safety. However, current simulation and field testing practices, particularly in the domain of small Unmanned Aerial Systems (sUAS), are ad-hoc and lack a thorough, structured testing process. Furthermore, there is a dearth of standard processes and methodologies to inform the design of comprehensive simulation and field tests. This gap in the testing process leads to the deployment of sUAS applications that are: (a) tested in simulation environments which do not adequately capture the real-world complexity, such as environmental factors, due to a lack of tool support; (b) not subjected to a comprehensive range of scenarios during simulation testing to validate the system requirements, due to the absence of a process defining the relationship between requirements and simulation tests; and (c) not analyzed through standard safety analysis processes, because of missing traceability between simulation testing artifacts and safety analysis artifacts. To address these issues, we have developed an initial framework for validating CPS, specifically focusing on sUAS and robotic applications. We demonstrate the suitability of our framework by applying it to an example from the sUAS domain. Our preliminary results confirm the applicability of our framework. We conclude with a research roadmap to outline our next research goals along with our current proposal.

Abstract: The Crab Nebula is a unique laboratory for studying the acceleration of electrons and positrons through their non-thermal radiation. Observations of very-high-energy $\gamma$ rays from the Crab Nebula have provided important constraints for modelling its broadband emission. We present the first fully self-consistent analysis of the Crab Nebula's $\gamma$-ray emission between 1 GeV and $\sim$100 TeV, that is, over five orders of magnitude in energy. Using the open-source software package Gammapy, we combined 11.4 yr of data from the Fermi Large Area Telescope and 80 h of High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) data at the event level and provide a measurement of the spatial extension of the nebula and its energy spectrum. We find evidence for a shrinking of the nebula with increasing $\gamma$-ray energy. Furthermore, we fitted several phenomenological models to the measured data, finding that none of them can fully describe the spatial extension and the spectral energy distribution at the same time. Especially the extension measured at TeV energies appears too large when compared to the X-ray emission. Our measurements probe the structure of the magnetic field between the pulsar wind termination shock and the dust torus, and we conclude that the magnetic field strength decreases with increasing distance from the pulsar. Abstract: Monochromatic gamma-ray signals constitute a potential smoking gun signature for annihilating or decaying dark matter particles that could relatively easily be distinguished from astrophysical or instrumental backgrounds. We provide an updated assessment of the sensitivity of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) to such signals, based on observations of the Galactic centre region as well as of selected dwarf spheroidal galaxies. We find that current limits and detection prospects for dark matter masses above 300 GeV will be significantly improved, by up to an order of magnitude in the multi-TeV range. This demonstrates that CTA will set a new standard for gamma-ray astronomy also in this respect, as the world's largest and most sensitive high-energy gamma-ray observatory, in particular due to its exquisite energy resolution at TeV energies and the adopted observational strategy focussing on regions with large dark matter densities. Throughout our analysis, we use up-to-date instrument response functions, and we thoroughly model the effect of instrumental systematic uncertainties in our statistical treatment. Abstract: The radio galaxy M87 is a variable very-high energy (VHE) gamma-ray source, exhibiting three major flares reported in 2005, 2008, and 2010. Despite extensive studies, the origin of the VHE gamma-ray emission is yet to be understood. In this study, we investigate the VHE gamma-ray spectrum of M87 during states of high gamma-ray activity, utilizing 20.2$\,$ hours the H.E.S.S. observations. Our findings indicate a preference for a curved spectrum, characterized by a log-parabola model with extra-galactic background light (EBL) model above 0.3$\,$TeV at the 4$\sigma$ level, compared to a power-law spectrum with EBL. We investigate the degeneracy between the absorption feature and the EBL normalization and derive upper limits on EBL models mainly sensitive in the wavelength range 12.4$\,$$\mu$m - 40$\,$$\mu$m., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures. 29. On the mean-field limit for Stein variational gradient descent: stability and multilevel approximation

Abstract: In this paper we propose and analyze a novel multilevel version of Stein variational gradient descent (SVGD). SVGD is a recent particle based variational inference method. For Bayesian inverse problems with computationally expensive likelihood evaluations, the method can become prohibitive as it requires to evolve a discrete dynamical system over many time steps, each of which requires likelihood evaluations at all particle locations. To address this, we introduce a multilevel variant that involves running several interacting particle dynamics in parallel corresponding to different approximation levels of the likelihood. By carefully tuning the number of particles at each level, we prove that a significant reduction in computational complexity can be achieved. As an application we provide a numerical experiment for a PDE driven inverse problem, which confirms the speed up suggested by our theoretical results.

Abstract: SS 433 is a microquasar, a stellar binary system with collimated relativistic jets. We observed SS 433 in gamma rays using the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.), finding an energy-dependent shift in the apparent position of the gamma-ray emission of the parsec-scale jets. These observations trace the energetic electron population and indicate the gamma rays are produced by inverse-Compton scattering. Modelling of the energy-dependent gamma-ray morphology constrains the location of particle acceleration and requires an abrupt deceleration of the jet flow. We infer the presence of shocks on either side of the binary system at distances of 25 to 30 parsecs and conclude that self-collimation of the precessing jets forms the shocks, which then efficiently accelerate electrons., Comment: Submitted 20th Apr. 2023, published 25th January 2024 (accepted version)

Abstract: In recent years, various interacting particle samplers have been developed to sample from complex target distributions, such as those found in Bayesian inverse problems. These samplers are motivated by the mean-field limit perspective and implemented as ensembles of particles that move in the product state space according to coupled stochastic differential equations. The ensemble approximation and numerical time stepping used to simulate these systems can introduce bias and affect the invariance of the particle system with respect to the target distribution. To correct for this, we investigate the use of a Metropolization step, similar to the Metropolis-adjusted Langevin algorithm. We examine Metropolization of either the whole ensemble or smaller subsets of the ensemble, and prove basic convergence of the resulting ensemble Markov chain to the target distribution. Our numerical results demonstrate the benefits of this correction in numerical examples for popular interacting particle samplers such as ALDI, CBS, and stochastic SVGD.

35. The variety of extreme blazars in the AstroSat view

Abstract: Extreme blazars have exceptionally hard intrinsic X-ray/TeV spectra and extreme peak energies in their spectral energy distribution (SED). Observational evidence suggests that the non-thermal emission from extreme blazars is typically non-variable. We aim to explore X-ray and GeV observational features of a variety of extreme blazars and also aim to test the applicability of various blazar emission models that could explain the very hard TeV spectra. We perform X-ray analysis of AstroSat and Swift-XRT data, along with gamma-ray data from Fermi-LAT, for sources; 1ES 0120+340, RGB J0710+591, 1ES 1101-232, 1ES 1741+196 and 1ES 2322-409. We employ three models: 1) a steady-state one-zone synchrotron-self-Compton (SSC) code, 2) another leptonic scenario of co-accelerated electrons and protons on multiple shocks, applied only on the extreme-TeVsources and 3) a one-zone hadro-leptonic (OneHaLe) code. The hadro-leptonic code is used twice to explain the gamma-ray emission process: proton synchrotron and synchrotron emission of secondary pairs. Our X-ray analysis provides well-constrained estimates of the synchrotron peak energies for both 1ES0120+340 and 1ES1741+196. The multi-epoch X-ray and GeV data reveal spectral and flux variabilities in RGB J0710+591 and 1ES 1741+196, even on time scales of days to weeks. As anticipated, the one-zone SSC model adequately reproduces the SEDs of regular HBLs but encounters difficulties in explaining the hardest TeV emission. Hadronic models offer a reasonable fit to the hard TeV spectrum, though with the trade-off of requiring extreme jet powers. On the other hand, the lepto-hadronic scenario faces additional challenges in fitting the GeV spectra of extreme-TeV sources. Finally, e-p co-acceleration scenario naturally accounts for the observed hard electron distributions and effectively matches the hardest TeV spectrum of RGB J0710+591 and 1ES 1101-232., Comment: 22 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Abstract: We discuss an algorithm to compute transport maps that couple the uniform measure on $[0,1]^d$ with a specified target distribution $\pi$ on $[0,1]^d$. The primary objectives are either to sample from or to compute expectations w.r.t. $\pi$. The method is based on leveraging a polynomial surrogate of the target density, which is obtained by a least-squares or interpolation approximation. We discuss the design and construction of suitable sparse approximation spaces, and provide a complete error and cost analysis for target densities belonging to certain smoothness classes. Further, we explore the relation between our proposed algorithm and related approaches that aim to find suitable transports via optimization over a class of parametrized transports. Abstract: The detection of gravitational waves from a binary neutron star merger by Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo (GW170817), along with the discovery of the electromagnetic counterparts of this gravitational wave event, ushered in a new era of multimessenger astronomy, providing the first direct evidence that BNS mergers are progenitors of short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Such events may also produce very-high-energy (VHE, > 100GeV) photons which have yet to be detected in coincidence with a gravitational wave signal. The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is a next-generation VHE observatory which aims to be indispensable in this search, with an unparalleled sensitivity and ability to slew anywhere on the sky within a few tens of seconds. New observing modes and follow-up strategies are being developed for CTA to rapidly cover localization areas of gravitational wave events that are typically larger than the CTA field of view. This work will evaluate and provide estimations on the expected number of of gravitational wave events that will be observable with CTA, considering both on- and off-axis emission. Abstract: Gamma-ray observations have established energetic isolated pulsars as outstanding particle accelerators and antimatter factories in the Galaxy. There is, however, no consensus regarding the acceleration mechanisms and the radiative processes at play, nor the locations where these take place. The spectra of all observed gamma-ray pulsars to date show strong cutoffs or a break above energies of a few gigaelectronvolt (GeV). Using the H.E.S.S. array of Cherenkov telescopes, we discovered a novel radiation component emerging beyond this generic GeV cutoff in the Vela pulsar's broadband spectrum. The extension of gamma-ray pulsation energies up to at least 20 teraelectronvolts (TeV) shows that Vela pulsar can accelerate particles to Lorentz factors higher than $4\times10^7$. This is an order of magnitude larger than in the case of the Crab pulsar, the only other pulsar detected in the TeV energy range. Our results challenge the state-of-the-art models for high-energy emission of pulsars while providing a new probe, i.e. the energetic multi-TeV component, for constraining the acceleration and emission processes in their extreme energy limit., Comment: 38 pages, 6 figures. Abstract: The concept of chemical bonding is a crucial aspect of chemistry that aids in understanding the complexity and reactivity of molecules and materials. However, the interpretation of chemical bonds can be hindered by the choice of the theoretical approach and the specific method utilized. This study aims to investigate the effect of choosing different density functionals on the interpretation of bonding achieved through energy decomposition analysis (EDA). To achieve this goal, a data set was created, representing four bonding groups and various combinations of functionals and dispersion correction schemes. The calculations showed significant variation among the different functionals for the EDA terms, with the dispersion correction terms exhibiting the highest variability. More information was extracted by using unsupervised learning in combination with dimensionality reduction on the data set. Results indicate that, despite the differences in the EDA terms obtained from different functionals, the functional has the least significant impact, suggesting minimal influence on the bonding interpretation., Comment: 34 pages, 11 figures

Abstract: Galaxy clusters are expected to be dark matter (DM) reservoirs and storage rooms for the cosmic-ray protons (CRp) that accumulate along the cluster's formation history. Accordingly, they are excellent targets to search for signals of DM annihilation and decay at gamma-ray energies and are predicted to be sources of large-scale gamma-ray emission due to hadronic interactions in the intracluster medium. We estimate the sensitivity of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) to detect diffuse gamma-ray emission from the Perseus galaxy cluster. We perform a detailed spatial and spectral modelling of the expected signal for the DM and the CRp components. For each, we compute the expected CTA sensitivity. The observing strategy of Perseus is also discussed. In the absence of a diffuse signal (non-detection), CTA should constrain the CRp to thermal energy ratio within the radius $R_{500}$ down to about $X_{500}<3\times 10^{-3}$, for a spatial CRp distribution that follows the thermal gas and a CRp spectral index $\alpha_{\rm CRp}=2.3$. Under the optimistic assumption of a pure hadronic origin of the Perseus radio mini-halo and depending on the assumed magnetic field profile, CTA should measure $\alpha_{\rm CRp}$ down to about $\Delta\alpha_{\rm CRp}\simeq 0.1$ and the CRp spatial distribution with 10% precision. Regarding DM, CTA should improve the current ground-based gamma-ray DM limits from clusters observations on the velocity-averaged annihilation cross-section by a factor of up to $\sim 5$, depending on the modelling of DM halo substructure. In the case of decay of DM particles, CTA will explore a new region of the parameter space, reaching models with $\tau_{\chi}>10^{27}$s for DM masses above 1 TeV. These constraints will provide unprecedented sensitivity to the physics of both CRp acceleration and transport at cluster scale and to TeV DM particle models, especially in the decay scenario., Comment: 93 pages (including author list, appendix and references), 143 figures. 44. Distribution learning via neural differential equations: a nonparametric statistical perspective

Abstract: Ordinary differential equations (ODEs), via their induced flow maps, provide a powerful framework to parameterize invertible transformations for the purpose of representing complex probability distributions. While such models have achieved enormous success in machine learning, particularly for generative modeling and density estimation, little is known about their statistical properties. This work establishes the first general nonparametric statistical convergence analysis for distribution learning via ODE models trained through likelihood maximization. We first prove a convergence theorem applicable to arbitrary velocity field classes $\mathcal{F}$ satisfying certain simple boundary constraints. This general result captures the trade-off between approximation error (`bias') and the complexity of the ODE model (`variance'). We show that the latter can be quantified via the $C^1$-metric entropy of the class $\mathcal F$. We then apply this general framework to the setting of $C^k$-smooth target densities, and establish nearly minimax-optimal convergence rates for two relevant velocity field classes $\mathcal F$: $C^k$ functions and neural networks. The latter is the practically important case of neural ODEs. Our proof techniques require a careful synthesis of (i) analytical stability results for ODEs, (ii) classical theory for sieved M-estimators, and (iii) recent results on approximation rates and metric entropies of neural network classes. The results also provide theoretical insight on how the choice of velocity field class, and the dependence of this choice on sample size $n$ (e.g., the scaling of width, depth, and sparsity of neural network classes), impacts statistical performance.

45. Deep Operator Network Approximation Rates for Lipschitz Operators

Abstract: We establish universality and expression rate bounds for a class of neural Deep Operator Networks (DON) emulating Lipschitz (or H\"older) continuous maps $\mathcal G:\mathcal X\to\mathcal Y$ between (subsets of) separable Hilbert spaces $\mathcal X$, $\mathcal Y$. The DON architecture considered uses linear encoders $\mathcal E$ and decoders $\mathcal D$ via (biorthogonal) Riesz bases of $\mathcal X$, $\mathcal Y$, and an approximator network of an infinite-dimensional, parametric coordinate map that is Lipschitz continuous on the sequence space $\ell^2(\mathbb N)$. Unlike previous works ([Herrmann, Schwab and Zech: Neural and Spectral operator surrogates: construction and expression rate bounds, SAM Report, 2022], [Marcati and Schwab: Exponential Convergence of Deep Operator Networks for Elliptic Partial Differential Equations, SAM Report, 2022]), which required for example $\mathcal G$ to be holomorphic, the present expression rate results require mere Lipschitz (or H\"older) continuity of $\mathcal G$. Key in the proof of the present expression rate bounds is the use of either super-expressive activations (e.g. [Yarotski: Elementary superexpressive activations, Int. Conf. on ML, 2021], [Shen, Yang and Zhang: Neural network approximation: Three hidden layers are enough, Neural Networks, 2021], and the references there) which are inspired by the Kolmogorov superposition theorem, or of nonstandard NN architectures with standard (ReLU) activations as recently proposed in [Zhang, Shen and Yang: Neural Network Architecture Beyond Width and Depth, Adv. in Neural Inf. Abstract: Using well-calibrated experimental data we validate theoretical X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) as well as X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) calculations for titanium (Ti), titanium oxide (TiO), and titanium dioxide (TiO$_2$) at the Ti K- and L-edges as well as O K-edge. XAS and XES in combination with a multi-edge approach offer a detailed insight into the electronic structure of materials since both the occupied and unoccupied states, are probed. The experimental results are compared with ab initio calculations from the OCEAN package which uses the Bethe-Salpeter equation (BSE) approach. Using the same set of input parameters for each compound for calculations at different edges, the transferability of the OCEAN calculations across different spectroscopy methods and energy ranges is validated. Thus, the broad applicability for analysing and interpreting the electronic structure of materials with the OCEAN package is shown.

47. ExHaLe-jet: Modeling blazar jets with an extended hadro-leptonic radiation code

Abstract: Blazars emit across all electromagnetic wavelengths. While the so-called one-zone model has described well both quiescent and flaring states, it cannot explain the radio emission and fails in more complex data sets, such as AP Librae. In order to self-consistently describe the entire electromagnetic spectrum emitted by the jet, extended radiation models are necessary. Notably, kinetic descriptions of extended jets can provide the temporal and spatial evolution of the particle species and the full electromagnetic output. Here, we present the initial results of a newly developed hadro-leptonic extended-jet code: ExHaLe-jet. As protons take much longer than electrons to lose their energy, they can transport energy over much larger distances than electrons and are therefore essential for the energy transport in the jet. Furthermore, protons induce injection of additional pairs through pion and Bethe-Heitler pair production, which can explain a dominant leptonic radiation signal while still producing neutrinos. Abstract: In July 2021, PKS 1510-089 exhibited a significant flux drop in the high-energy gamma-ray (by a factor 10) and optical (by a factor 5) bands and remained in this low state throughout 2022. Similarly, the optical polarization in the source vanished, resulting in the optical spectrum being fully explained through the steady flux of the accretion disk and the broad-line region. Unlike the aforementioned bands, the very-high-energy gamma-ray and X-ray fluxes did not exhibit a significant flux drop from year to year. This suggests that the steady-state very-high-energy gamma-ray and X-ray fluxes originate from a different emission region than the vanished parts of the high-energy gamma-ray and optical jet fluxes. The latter component has disappeared through either a swing of the jet away from the line-of-sight or a significant drop in the photon production efficiency of the jet close to the black hole.
