Contemporary cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiments typically have observing bands covering the range 20 - 800 GHz. Certain science goals, including the detection of $\mu$-type distortions to the CMB spectrum and the characterization of low-frequency foregrounds, benefit from extended low-frequency coverage, but the standard CMB detector technology is not trivially adaptable to radio wavelengths. We propose using the upcoming Square Kilometer Array (SKA) as a CMB experiment, exploiting the immense raw sensitivity of SKA, in particular in single-dish mode, to measure medium-to-large-angular-scale modes of the CMB at radio wavelengths. As a worked example, we forecast the power of SKA combined with the upcoming LiteBIRD CMB space mission to constrain primordial non-Gaussianity through measurements of the correlation between anisotropies in the CMB $\mu$-distortion, temperature, and $E$-mode polarization fields. The thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (tSZ) effect is a spectral distortion of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) resulting from inverse Compton scattering of CMB photons with electrons in the medium of galaxy clusters. The spectrum of the tSZ effect is typically calculated assuming the spectrum of the CMB is a blackbody. However, energy or photon number injection at any epoch after photon creation processes become inefficient will distort the blackbody, potentially leading to a chemical potential or $\mu$-distortion for early injection. These $primordial$ spectral distortions will therefore introduce a change in the tSZ effect, effectively a distortion of a distortion. While this effect is small for an individual cluster's spectrum, upcoming and proposed CMB surveys expect to detect tens of thousands of clusters with the tSZ effect. In this paper, we forecast constraints on the $\mu$-distortion monopole from the distortion of the tSZ spectrum of clusters measured by CMB surveys. We find that planned experiments have the raw sensitivity to place constraints on $\mu$ that are comparable to or better than existing constraints but control over foregrounds and other systematics will be critical., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures

Diffusion damping of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) power spectrum results from imperfect photon-baryon coupling in the pre-recombination plasma. At redshift $5 \times 10^4 < z < 2 \times 10^6$, the plasma acquires an effective chemical potential, and energy injections from acoustic damping in this era create $\mu$-type spectral distortions of the CMB. These $\mu$ distortions trace the underlying photon density fluctuations, probing the primordial power spectrum in short-wavelength modes $k_\mathrm{S}$ over the range $50 \ \mathrm{Mpc}^{-1} \lesssim k \lesssim 10^4 \ \mathrm{Mpc}^{-1}$. Small-scale power modulated by long-wavelength modes $k_\mathrm{L}$ from squeezed-limit non-Gaussianities introduces cross-correlations between CMB temperature anisotropies and $\mu$ distortions. Under single-field inflation models, $\mu \times T$ correlations measured from an observer in an inertial frame should vanish up to a factor of $(k_\mathrm{L}/k_\mathrm{S})^2 \ll 1$. Thus, any measurable correlation rules out single-field inflation models. We forecast how well the next-generation ground-based CMB experiment CMB-S4 will be able to constrain primordial squeezed-limit non-Gaussianity, parameterized by $f_\mathrm{NL}$, using measurements of $C_{\ell}^{\mu T}$ as well as $C_{\ell}^{\mu E}$ from CMB $E$ modes. Using current experimental specifications and foreground modeling, we expect $\sigma(f_\mathrm{NL}) \lesssim 1000$. This is roughly four times better than the current limit on $f_\mathrm{NL}$ using $\mu \times T$ and $\mu \times E$ correlations from Planck and is comparable to what is achievable with LiteBIRD, demonstrating the power of the CMB-S4 experiment. This measurement is at an effective scale of $k \simeq 740 \ \text{Mpc}^{-1}$ and is thus highly complementary to measurements at larger scales from primary CMB and large-scale structure., Comment: 19 pages, 6 figures

The CMB is foundational to our understanding of modern physics and continues to be a powerful tool driving our understanding of cosmology and particle physics. In this paper, we outline the broad and unique impact of CMB science for the High Energy Cosmic Frontier in the upcoming decade. We report the discovery of statistically significant spatial structures in the projected two-dimensional distributions of the Globular Cluster (GC) systems of 10 among the brightest galaxies in the Fornax Cluster. We use a catalog of GCs extracted from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) Fornax Cluster Survey (ACSFCS) imaging data. We characterize the size, shape and location relative to the host galaxies of the GC structures and suggest a classification based on their morphology and location that is suggestive of different formation mechanisms. We also investigate the GC structures in the context of the positions of their host galaxies relative to the general spatial distributions of galaxies and intra-cluster globular clusters in the Fornax Cluster. We finally estimate the dynamical masses of the progenitors of some GC structures, under the assumption that they are the relics of past accretion events of satellite galaxies by their hosts., Comment: 40 pages, 26 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Single field inflationary models that seek to greatly enhance small scale power in order to form primordial black holes predict both a squeezed bispectrum that is enhanced by this small scale power and a potentially detectable enhancement of CMB spectral distortions. Despite this combination, spectral distortion anisotropy on CMB scales remains small since the squeezed bispectrum represents an unobservable modulation of the scale rather than local amplitude for the short wavelength acoustic power that dissipates and forms the $\mu$ spectral distortion. The leading order amplitude effect comes from the local modulation of acoustic dissipation at the beginning of the $\mu$ epoch at the end of thermalization by a long wavelength mode that is correlated with CMB anisotropy itself. Compensating factors from the suppression by the square of the ratio the comoving horizon at thermalization to the smallest detectable primary CMB scales ($\sim 0.0005$) and maximal allowed enhancement of $\mu$ ($\sim 5000$) leaves a signal in the $\mu T$ cross spectrum that is still well beyond the capabilities of PIXIE or LiteBIRD due to sensitivity and resolution while remaining much larger than in single field slow roll inflation and potentially observable., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures

We study the role of the Standard Model Higgs condensate, formed during cosmological inflation, in the epoch of reheating that follows. We focus on the scenario where the inflaton decays slowly and perturbatively, so that there is a long period between the end of inflation and the beginning of radiation domination. The Higgs condensate decays non-perturbatively during this period, and we show that it heats the primordial plasma to much higher temperatures than would result from the slowly-decaying inflaton alone. We discuss the effect of this hot plasma on the thermalization of the inflaton's decay products, and study its phenomenological implications for the formation of cosmological relics like dark matter, with associated isocurvature fluctuations, and the restoration of the electroweak and Peccei-Quinn symmetries., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures; matches published version

The first resolved, multiply imaged supernova Type Ia, iPTF16geu, was observed 4 years ago, five decades after such systems were first envisioned. Because of the unique properties of the source, these systems hold a lot of promise for the study of galaxy structure and cosmological parameters. However, this very first example presented modelers with a few puzzles. It was expected that to explain image fluxes a contribution from microlensing by stars would be required, but to accommodate the magnitude of microlensing, the density slope of the elliptical power law lens model had to be quite shallow, $\rho_{2D} \propto r^{-0.7}$. Furthermore, the center of mass had to be displaced from that of observed light by ~0.1 kpc, and the position angle of light distribution was misaligned with that of mass by ~40 degrees. In this paper we present mass models that resolve the first two problems, and suggest a resolution of the third. Motivated by observations of local ellipticals, and some recent analysis of galaxy-scale lenses, our mass models consist of two offset (baryonic) mass components. The resulting mass distributions have a single centroid, but are lopsided, and have isodensity contours that are not purely elliptical and not self-similar with radius.
