Search

The geometry of the neutral gas in and around galaxies is a key regulator of the escape of ionizing photons. We present the first statistical study aiming at linking the neutral and ionized gas distributions to the Lyman continuum (LyC) escape fraction (fesc(LyC)) in a sample of 22 confirmed LyC leakers and non-leakers at z~0.35 using the Keck Cosmic Web Imager (Keck/KCWI) and the Low Resolution Spectrograph 2 (HET/LRS2). Our integral field unit data enable the detection of neutral and low-ionization gas, as traced by Mg II, and ionized gas, as traced by [O II], extending beyond the stellar continuum for 7 and 10 objects, respectively. All but one object with extended Mg II emission also shows extended [O II] emission; in this case, Mg II emission is always more extended than [O II] by a factor 1.3 on average. Most of the galaxies with extended emission are non or weak LyC leakers (fesc(LyC) < 5%), but we find a large diversity of neutral gas configurations around these weakly LyC-emitting galaxies. Conversely, the strongest leakers (fesc(LyC) > 10%) appear uniformly compact in both Mg II and [O II] with exponential scale lengths <1 kpc. We also find a trend between fesc(LyC) and the spatial offsets of the nebular gas and the stellar continuum emission. Moreover, we find significant anti-correlations between the spatial extent of the neutral gas and the [O III]/[O II] ratio, and H$\beta$ equivalent width, as well as positive correlations with metallicity and UV size, suggesting that galaxies with more compact neutral gas sizes are more highly ionized. The observations suggest that strong LyC emitters do not have extended neutral gas halos and ionizing photons may be emitted in many directions. The LIGO HET Response (LIGHETR) project is an enterprise to follow up optical transients (OT) discovered as gravitational wave merger sources by the LIGO/Virgo collaboration (LVC). Early spectroscopy has the potential to constrain crucial parameters such as the aspect angle. The LIGHETR collaboration also includes the capacity to model the spectroscopic evolution of mergers to facilitate a real-time direct comparison of models with our data. The principal facility is the Hobby-Eberly Telescope. LIGHETR uses the massively-replicated VIRUS array of spectrographs to search for associated OTs and obtain early blue spectra and in a complementary role, the low-resolution LRS-2 spectrograph is used to obtain spectra of viable candidates as well as a densely-sampled series of spectra of true counterparts. Once an OT is identified, the anticipated cadence of spectra would match or considerably exceed anything achieved for GW170817 = AT2017gfo for which there were no spectra in the first 12 hours and thereafter only roughly once daily. We describe special HET-specific software written to facilitate the program and attempts to determine the flux limits to undetected sources. We also describe our campaign to follow up OT candidates during the third observational campaign of the LIGO and Virgo Scientific Collaborations. We obtained VIRUS spectroscopy of candidate galaxy hosts for 5 LVC gravitational wave events and LRS-2 spectra of one candidate for the OT associated with S190901ap. We identified that candidate, ZTF19abvionh = AT2019pip, as a possible Wolf-Rayet star in an otherwise unrecognized nearby dwarf galaxy., Comment: 26 pages, 15 figures

We present the discovery of TOI-5205~b, a transiting Jovian planet orbiting a solar metallicity M4V star, which was discovered using Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite photometry and then confirmed using a combination of precise radial velocities, ground-based photometry, spectra, and speckle imaging. TOI-5205~b has one of the highest mass ratios for M dwarf planets with a mass ratio of almost 0.3$\%$, as it orbits a host star that is just $0.392 \pm 0.015$ \solmass{}. Its planetary radius is $1.03 \pm 0.03~R_J$, while the mass is $1.08 \pm 0.06~M_J$. Additionally, the large size of the planet orbiting a small star results in a transit depth of $\sim 7\%$, making it one of the deepest transits of a confirmed exoplanet orbiting a main-sequence star. The large transit depth makes TOI-5205~b a compelling target to probe its atmospheric properties, as a means of tracing the potential formation pathways. While there have been radial-velocity-only discoveries of giant planets around mid-M dwarfs, this is the first transiting Jupiter with a mass measurement discovered around such a low-mass host star. Low- and intermediate-mass ($\rm 0.8~M_\odot < M < 8~M_\odot$) stars that evolve into planetary nebulae (PNe) play an important role in tracing and driving Galactic chemical evolution. Spectroscopy of PNe enables access to both the initial composition of their progenitor stars and products of their internal nucleosynthesis, but determining accurate ionic and elemental abundances of PNe requires high-quality optical spectra. We obtained new optical spectra of eight highly-extincted PNe with limited optical data in the literature using the Low Resolution Spectrograph 2 (LRS2) on the Hobby-Eberly Telescope (HET). Extinction coefficients, electron temperatures and densities, and ionic and elemental abundances of up to 11 elements (He, N, O, Ne, S, Cl, Ar, K, Fe, Kr, and Xe) are determined for each object in our sample. Where available, astrometric data from Gaia eDR3 is used to kinematically characterize the probability that each object belongs to the Milky Way's thin disk, thick disk, or halo. Four of the PNe show kinematic and chemical signs of thin disk membership, while two may be members of the thick disk. The remaining two targets lack Gaia data, but their solar O, Ar, and Cl abundances suggest thin disk membership. Additionally, we report the detection of broad emission features from the central star of M 3-35. Our results significantly improve the available information on the nebular parameters and chemical compositions of these objects, which can inform future analyses., Comment: 22 pages, 3 figures, 8 tables. SN 2014C was originally classified as a Type Ib supernova, but at phase {\phi} = 127 d post-explosion strong H{\alpha} emission was observed. SN 2014C has since been observed in radio, infrared, optical and X-ray bands. Here we present new optical spectroscopic and photometric data spanning {\phi} = 947 - 2494 d post-explosion. We address the evolution of the broadened H{\alpha} emission line, as well as broad [O III] emission and other lines. We also conduct a parallel analysis of all publicly available multi-wavelength data. From our spectra, we find a nearly constant H{\alpha} FWHM velocity width of {\sim}2000 km/s that is significantly lower than that of other broadened atomic transitions ({\sim}3000 - 7000 km/s) present in our spectra ([O I] {\lambda}6300; [O III] {\lambda}{\lambda}4959,5007; He I {\lambda}7065; [Ca II] {\lambda}{\lambda}7291,7324). The late radio data demand a fast forward shock ({\sim}10,000 km/s at {\phi} = 1700 d) in rarified matter that contrasts with the modest velocity of the H{\alpha}. We propose that the infrared flux originates from a toroidal-like structure of hydrogen surrounding the progenitor system, while later emission at other wavelengths (radio, X-ray) likely originates predominantly from the reverse shock in the ejecta and the forward shock in the quasi-spherical progenitor He wind. We propose that the H{\alpha} emission arises in the boundary layer between the ejecta and torus. We measure the central kinematics for the dwarf spheroidal galaxy Leo I using integrated-light measurements and previously published data. We find a steady rise in the velocity dispersion from $300^{\prime\prime}$ into the center. The integrated-light kinematics provide a velocity dispersion of $11.76\pm0.66$ km/s inside $75^{\prime\prime}$. After applying appropriate corrections to crowding in the central regions, we achieve consistent velocity dispersion values using velocities from individual stars. Crowding corrections need to be applied when targeting individual stars in high density stellar environments. From integrated light, we measure the surface brightness profile and find a shallow cusp towards the center. Axisymmetric, orbit-based models measure the stellar mass-to-light ratio, black hole mass and parameters for a dark matter halo. At large radii it is important to consider possible tidal effects from the Milky Way so we include a variety of assumptions regarding the tidal radius. For every set of assumptions, models require a central black hole consistent with a mass $(3.3 \pm 2) \times 10^6\, M_\odot$. The no-black-hole case for any of our assumptions is excluded at over 95% significance, with $6.4<\Delta\chi^2<14$. A black hole of this mass would have significant effect on dwarf galaxy formation and evolution. The dark halo parameters are heavily affected by the assumptions for the tidal radii, with the circular velocity only constrained to be above 30 km/s. Reasonable assumptions for the tidal radius result in stellar orbits consistent with an isotropic distribution in the velocities. These more realistic models only show strong constraints for the mass of the central black hole.

We assemble a sample of 17 low metallicity (7.45 < log(O/H)+12 < 8.12) galaxies with z < 0.1 found spectroscopically, without photometric pre-selection, in early data from the Hobby Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX). Star forming galaxies that occupy the lowest mass and metallicity end of the mass-metallicity relation tend to be under sampled in continuum-based surveys as their spectra are typically dominated by emission from newly forming stars. We search for galaxies with high [OIII]$\lambda$5007 / [OII]$\lambda$3727, implying highly ionized nebular emission often indicative of low metallicity systems. With the Second Generation Low Resolution Spectrograph on the Hobby Eberly Telescope we acquired follow-up spectra, with higher resolution and broader wavelength coverage, of each low-metallicity candidate in order to confirm the redshift, measure the H$\alpha$ and [NII] line strengths and, in many cases, obtain deeper spectra of the blue lines. We find our galaxies are consistent with the mass-metallicity relation of typical low mass galaxies. However, galaxies in our sample tend to have similar specific star formation rates (sSFRs) as the incredibly rare "blueberry" galaxies found in (Yang et. al. 2017). We illustrate the power of spectroscopic surveys for finding low mass and metallicity galaxies and reveal that we find a sample of galaxies that are a hybrid between the properties of typical dwarf galaxies and the more extreme blueberry galaxies., Comment: 32 pages, 12 figures, 8 tables, Accepted for publication in ApJ

The Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX) is an unbiased, massively multiplexed spectroscopic survey, designed to measure the expansion history of the universe through low-resolution ($R\sim750$) spectra of Lyman-Alpha Emitters. In its search for these galaxies, HETDEX will also observe a few 10$^{5}$ stars. In this paper, we present the first stellar value-added catalog within the internal second data release of the HETDEX Survey (HDR2). The new catalog contains 120,571 low-resolution spectra for 98,736 unique stars between $10 < G < 22$ spread across the HETDEX footprint at relatively high ($b\sim60^\circ$) Galactic latitudes. With these spectra, we measure radial velocities (RVs) for $\sim$42,000 unique FGK-type stars in the catalog and show that the HETDEX spectra are sufficient to constrain these RVs with a 1$\sigma$ precision of 28.0 km/s and bias of 3.5 km/s with respect to the LAMOST surveys and 1$\sigma$ precision of 27.5 km/s and bias of 14.0 km/s compared to the SEGUE survey. Since these RVs are for faint ($G\geq16$) stars, they will be complementary to Gaia. Using t-Distributed Stochastic Neighbor Embedding (t-SNE), we also demonstrate that the HETDEX spectra can be used to determine a star's T${\rm{eff}}$, and log g and its [Fe/H]. With the t-SNE projection of the FGK-type stars with HETDEX spectra we also identify 416 new candidate metal-poor ([Fe/H] $< -1$~dex) stars for future study. We carry out a series of deep Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) S-band observations of a sample of 21 quasars at $z\sim6$. The new observations expand the searches of radio continuum emission to the optically faint quasar population at the highest redshift with rest-frame $4400 \rm \AA$ luminosities down to $3 \times10^{11} \ L_{\odot}$. We report the detections of two new radio-loud quasars: CFHQS J2242+0334 (hereafter J2242+0334) at $z=5.88$ and CFHQS J0227$-$0605 (hereafter J0227$-$0605) at $z=6.20$, detected with 3 GHz flux densities of $87.0 \pm 6.3 \ \mu \rm Jy$ and $55.4 \pm 6.7 \ \mu \rm Jy$, respectively. Their radio \replaced{loudness}{loudnesses} are estimated to be $54.9 \pm 4.7$ and $16.5 \pm 3.2$, respectively. To better constrain the radio-loud fraction (RLF), we combine the new measurements with the archival VLA L-band data as well as available data from the literature, considering the upper limits for non-detections and \deleted{and} possible selection effects. The final derived RLF is $9.4 \pm 5.7\%$ for the optically selected quasars at $z\sim6$. We also compare the RLF to that of the quasar samples at low redshift and check the RLF in different quasar luminosity bins. The RLF for the optically faint objects is still poorly constrained due to the limited sample size. Our \replaced{result}{results} show no evidence of significant quasar RLF evolution with redshift. Astronomers have discovered thousands of planets outside the solar system, most of which orbit stars that will eventually evolve into red giants and then into white dwarfs. During the red giant phase, any close-orbiting planets will be engulfed by the star, but more distant planets can survive this phase and remain in orbit around the white dwarf. Some white dwarfs show evidence for rocky material floating in their atmospheres, in warm debris disks, or orbiting very closely, which has been interpreted as the debris of rocky planets that were scattered inward and tidally disrupted. Recently, the discovery of a gaseous debris disk with a composition similar to ice giant planets demonstrated that massive planets might also find their way into tight orbits around white dwarfs, but it is unclear whether the planets can survive the journey. So far, the detection of intact planets in close orbits around white dwarfs has remained elusive. Here, we report the discovery of a giant planet candidate transiting the white dwarf WD 1856+534 (TIC 267574918) every 1.4 days. The planet candidate is roughly the same size as Jupiter and is no more than 14 times as massive (with 95% confidence). Other cases of white dwarfs with close brown dwarf or stellar companions are explained as the consequence of common-envelope evolution, wherein the original orbit is enveloped during the red-giant phase and shrinks due to friction. In this case, though, the low mass and relatively long orbital period of the planet candidate make common-envelope evolution less likely. Instead, the WD 1856+534 system seems to demonstrate that giant planets can be scattered into tight orbits without being tidally disrupted, and motivates searches for smaller transiting planets around white dwarfs., Comment: 50 pages, 12 figures, 2 tables. We present cosmological ($30-400$ Mpc) distributions of neutral hydrogen (HI) in the inter-galactic medium (IGM) traced by Ly$\alpha$ Emitters (LAEs) and QSOs at $z=2.1-2.5$, selected with the data of the on-going Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX) and the eBOSS survey. We investigate spatial correlations of LAEs and QSOs with HI tomography maps reconstructed from HI Ly$\alpha$ forest absorption in the spectra of background galaxies and QSOs obtained by the CLAMATO survey and this study, respectively. In the cosmological volume far from QSOs, we find that LAEs reside in regions of strong HI absorption, i.e. HI rich, which is consistent with results of previous galaxy-background QSO pair studies. Moreover, there is an anisotropy in the HI-distribution plot of transverse and line-of-sight distances; on average the HI absorption peak is blueshifted by $\sim 200$ km s$^{-1}$ from the LAE Ly$\alpha$ redshift, reproducing the known average velocity offset between the Ly$\alpha$ emission redshift and the galaxy systemic redshift. We have identified a $\sim$ 40-Mpc scale volume of HI underdensity that is a candidate for a giant HII bubble, where six QSOs and an LAE overdensity exist at $\left < z \right > =2.16$. The coincidence of the QSO and LAE overdensities with the HI underdensity indicates that the ionizing photon radiation of the QSOs has created a highly ionized volume of multiple proximity zones in a matter overdensity. Our results suggest an evolutionary picture where HI gas in an overdensity of galaxies becomes highly photoionized when QSOs emerge in the galaxies., Comment: 26 pages, 19 figures. 3C 82 at a redshift of 2.87 is the most distant 3C (Third Cambridge Catalogue) quasar. Thus, it is a strong candidate to have the most luminous radio lobes in the Universe. 3C 82 belongs to the class of compact steep spectrum radio sources. We use single dish and interferometric radio observations in order to model the plasma state of these powerful radio lobes. It is estimated that the long-term time-averaged jet power required to fill these lobes with leptonic plasma is $\overline{Q} \approx 2.66 \pm 1.33 \times 10^{47} \rm{ergs/sec}$, among the largest time averaged jet powers from a quasar. Positing protonic lobes is not tenable since they would require two orders of magnitude more mass transport to the lobes than was accreted to the central black hole during their formation. The first high signal to noise optical spectroscopic observation obtained of this object indicates that there is a powerful high ionization broad line wind with a kinetic power $\sim 10^{45} \rm{ergs/sec}$ and a velocity $\sim 0.01$c. We also estimate from the broad lines in 2018 and the UV continuum in three epochs spread out over three decades that the accretion flow bolometric luminosity is $L_{\rm{bol}} \approx 3.2-5.8 \times 10^{46} \rm{ergs/sec}$. The ratio of $\overline{Q}/L_{\rm{bol}}\approx 6.91 \pm 3.41$, is perhaps the largest of any known quasar. Extremely powerful jets tend to strongly suppress powerful winds of ionized baryonic matter. Consequently, 3C 82 provides a unique laboratory for studying the dynamical limits of the central engine of outflow initiation in quasars., Comment: To appear in ApJ

We assemble an unbiased sample of 29 galaxies with [O II] $\lambda 3727$ and/or [O III] $\lambda 5007$ detections at $z < 0.15$ from the Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX) Pilot Survey (HPS). HPS finds galaxies without pre-selection based on their detected emission lines via integral field spectroscopy. Sixteen of these objects were followed up with the second-generation, low resolution spectrograph (LRS2) on the upgraded Hobby-Eberly Telescope. Oxygen abundances were then derived via strong emission lines using a Bayesian approach. We find most of the galaxies fall along the mass-metallicity relation derived from photometrically selected star forming galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). However, two of these galaxies have low metallicity (similar to the very rare green pea galaxies in mass-metallicity space). The star formation rates of this sample fall in an intermediate space between the SDSS star forming main sequence and the extreme green pea galaxies. We conclude that spectroscopic selection fills part of the mass-metallicity-SFR phase space that is missed in photometric surveys with pre-selection like SDSS, i.e., we find galaxies that are actively forming stars but are faint in continuum. We use the results of this pilot investigation to make predictions for the upcoming unbiased, large spectroscopic sample of local line emitters from HETDEX. With the larger HETDEX survey we will determine if galaxies selected spectroscopically without continuum brightness pre-selection have metallicities that fall on a continuum that bridges typical star forming and rarer, more extreme systems like green peas.

The galaxy catalogs generated from low-resolution emission line surveys often contain both foreground and background interlopers due to line misidentification, which can bias the cosmological parameter estimation. In this paper, we present a method for correcting the interloper bias by using the joint-analysis of auto- and cross-power spectra of the main and the interloper samples. In particular, we can measure the interloper fractions from the cross-correlation between the interlopers and survey galaxies, because the true cross-correlation must be negligibly small. The estimated interloper fractions, in turn, remove the interloper bias in the cosmological parameter estimation. For example, in the Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX) low-redshift ($z<0.5$) [O II] $\lambda3727${\AA} emitters contaminate high-redshift ($1.9

The Hobby-Eberly Dark Energy Experiment pilot survey identified 284 [O II] 3727 emitting galaxies in a 169 square-arcminute field of sky in the redshift range 0 < z < 0.57. This line flux limited sample provides a bridge between studies in the local universe and higher-redshift [O II] surveys. We present an analysis of the star formation rates (SFRs) of these galaxies as a function of stellar mass as determined via spectral energy distribution fitting. The [O II] emitters fall on the "main sequence" of star-forming galaxies with SFR decreasing at lower masses and redshifts. However, the slope of our relation is flatter than that found for most other samples, a result of the metallicity dependence of the [O II] star formation rate indicator. The mass specific SFR is higher for lower mass objects, supporting the idea that massive galaxies formed more quickly and efficiently than their lower mass counterparts. This is confirmed by the fact that the equivalent widths of the [O II] emission lines trend smaller with larger stellar mass. We report the discovery of an IR-selected massive galaxy cluster in the IRAC Distant Cluster Survey (IDCS). We present new data from the Hubble Space Telescope and the W. M. Keck Observatory that spectroscopically confirm IDCS J1426+3508 at z=1.75. Moreover, the cluster is detected in archival Chandra data as an extended X-ray source, comprising 54 counts after the removal of point sources. We calculate an X-ray luminosity of L{0.5-2 keV} = (5.5 +/- 1.2) X 1e44 ergs/s within r = 60 arcsec (~1 Mpc diameter), which implies M_{200,L_x} = (5.6 +/- 1.6) X 1e14 Msun. The galaxy cluster IDCS J1426.5+3508 at z = 1.75 is the most massive galaxy cluster yet discovered at z > 1.4 and the first cluster at this epoch for which the Sunyaev-Zel'Dovich effect has been observed. In this paper we report on the discovery with HST imaging of a giant arc associated with this cluster. The curvature of the arc suggests that the lensing mass is nearly coincident with the brightest cluster galaxy, and the color is consistent with the arc being a star-forming galaxy. We compare the constraint on M200 based upon strong lensing with Sunyaev-Zel'Dovich results, finding that the two are consistent if the redshift of the arc is z > 3. Finally, we explore the cosmological implications of this system, considering the likelihood of the existence of a strongly lensing galaxy cluster at this epoch in an LCDM universe. While the existence of the cluster itself can potentially be accomodated if one considers the entire volume covered at this redshift by all current high-redshift cluster surveys, the existence of this strongly lensed galaxy greatly exacerbates the long-standing giant arc problem. For standard LCDM structure formation and observed background field galaxy counts this lens system should not exist. Specifically, there should be no giant arcs in the entire sky as bright in F814W as the observed arc for clusters at z \geq 1.75, and only \sim 0.3 as bright in F160W as the observed arc. If we relax the redshift constraint to consider all clusters at z \geq 1.5, the expected number of giant arcs rises to \sim15 in F160W, but the number of giant arcs of this brightness in F814W remains zero. These arc statistic results are independent of the mass of IDCS J1426.5+3508.
