Cruise trips have been rising in popularity since the 1970sand are currently a trend in the tourism market. This is particularly true of river cruises, which record a constant growth in the number of ship calls. The general upward trend in the number of river cruise passengers and dockings is also present in Croatia. Prerequisites for the development of cruising on Croatian rivers include, in addition to other geographical features, also the length of navigable water ways, but a systematic approach to this issue is needed for further development. The authors investigate the level of development of infrastructure on Croatian rivers and analyse the passenger and ship traffic on them. Special attention is given to the importance of cruises for tourism on European rivers and worldwide. In accordance with the Croatian Tourism Development Strategy until 2020, the authors explore geographical and other conditions necessary for the development of river cruise tourism. The aim of the paper is to point to the importance of building infrastructure for accommodation of vessels sailing on Croatian rivers, and in particular to the need to improve tourism offer in river destinations. The paper deals with the process of marine spatial planning which involves analysis and schedule of activities in three-dimensional maritime space and contributes to the efficient management of marine activities and the sustainable use of marine and coastal resources. Key elements are considered and the steps that should be taken into account when deciding whether and how to develop the system and framework of marine spatial planning in order to foster sustainable growth of maritime economies, sustainable development of marine areas and the sustainable use of marine resources. At the same time, situation the Republic of Croatia is presented. Analysis is made of the level of development of spatial planning in the Republic of Croatia and also case study of good European practices. Understanding the complete human influence on maritime space has the central position in the planning process. Maritime spatial planning logically connects on integral planning of coastal area. Applying integral management on coastal and maritime area, together with the establishment of the process of maritime spatial planning makes the coupling regarding managing of the resources; all that is directed to the existence of sustainable development. Maritime spatial planning (MSP) is the process of analyzing and separating spatial and temporal divisions of human activities in the maritime area. Croatia, even though it is extremely maritime country, has not yet established complete legal framework for setting up MSP. This paper analyzes European legal framework for implementation of MSP process in Croatia. It provides the overview of the accomplishments achieved until today, as well as achievements of the Republic of Croatia during establishing legal and institutional framework for establishment and implementation of maritime spatial planning. The overview of application of MSP in European practice is specially presented. The purpose of the paper is to analyze the growing needs for maritime space and the manners of amortization of its unorganized use. The goal of this paper is to point on the importance of adopting legal regulations regarding MSP and their practical application. The Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREG) is a collection of international legal standards adopted in order to avoid collisions at sea. Comprehensive knowledge of these rules is required for all who sail on the sea. The ACTs project (Avoiding Collisions at Sea) investigates the current problems in applying these Rules and intends to develop a new online course making it simpler and easier to understand them. A COLREG questionnaire has been drawn up for research purposes. The purpose of the questionnaire is checking which rules are more difficult to understand. In this paper, the authors analyse the level of understanding of the Rules in a group of secondary maritime school students. Requirements for reducing air pollution from ships and limiting of SOx emissions from ship's exhaust system in some areas resulted in the use of 'low-sulphur fuels' (instead of the previously common 'high-sulphur' fuel), which allows ships compliance with legislation. However, it has caused difficulties in the operation of diesel engines as a consequence, particularly when fuel switching. As the fuel switching occurs when entering or leaving emission controlled areas, which are usually loaded with high traffic, the difficulties are reflected on the safety of navigation. The aim of this paper is to analyse the causes of onboard fuel switching problems, and based on the results obtained and published researches reviewed to propose solutions to prevent their occurrence. Paper gathers information on Condition Assessment Programme (CAP), which is implemented by classification societies to thoroughly assess condition of tankers and bulk carriers by inspection of engine and hull. It is voluntary programme, mostly participated by tankers and bulk carriers which are fifteen and more years old and today less present on the market. Special focus will be on ultrasonic measurement of thickness of ship's plates which is most significant indicator on condition of older vessels. After all measuring is done, data is compared with classification society rules and condition of hull and machinery will be assessed. This kind of inspection provides owners of older ships proof that despite age their ships are equally capable of conducting sea voyage. The authors analyse the number of ship arrivals in the port of Rijeka to gain a better insight into their age. Croatia has well-indented coast and numerous islands and it is challenging to connect 48 permanently inhibited islands and at the same time respond to the requests of the population of the islands and their tourists in the maritime passenger transhipment. Although the liner passenger shipping has been established for series of years, it nevertheless requires a systematic approach to future development. Quite a number of scientific and technical papers have been written about the elements and the factors of the RO-RO liner passenger shipping significance. In this article authors examine the importance and role of the liner passenger shipping in connecting the islands with its mainland. This paper aims to evaluate the existing state of the port capacities for accommodating the RO-RO ships in order to modernize it and to emphasize the need for the improvement of the liner passenger shipping. Further in the paper, the maritime traffic of passengers and vehicles in the permanent line connection of the island and the mainland and the islands with each other in the Republic of Croatia. Particular attention has been paid to the level of development of the existing infrastructure for the accommodation of the RO-RO ships in the most significant Croatian ports. RO-RO passenger shipping is one of the key factors of the development of the Croatian islands. Authors point out the need to strengthen the role of the RO--RO passenger shipping as important part of maritime sector in the development and competitiveness of the Republic of Croatia through initiatives of sustainable growth of economic activities on islands and in the coastal area. The paper estimates the exhaust emissions of marine traffic in the Port of Rijeka based on the ship’s data obtained from the pilot company. The Port of Rijeka is the largest port in Croatia that includes several berthing locations with different terminals. The estimation is made for each of them respecting carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulphur oxides (SOx) and particulate matter (PM) as well as for the amount of total emissions for the area. The aim is to prepare basic records for estimation and further monitoring with respect to changes in the ongoing environmental regulation and restrictions. This paper will contribute to the overall national strategy of preparing shipping emission inventories for the Republic of Croatia. Croatia is one of the major Mediterranean destinations for nautical tourism owing to its countless attractions, indented coastline, numerous islands, climatic and other advantages. An important factor for achieving a full development potential is the availability of infra- and supra-structure, which is reflected through investments in new marinas, anchorages and other facilities. The article analyses accommodation capacities of ports for nautical tourism in Croatia. The authors give an overview of the current situation with an emphasis on the County of Primorje-Gorski Kotar. The purpose of this article is to analyse the growing need for accommodation capacities in nautical tourism ports and to point to the importance of building new marinas and berths, especially for boats long between 12 and 15 meters.
