8. An adaptive MPC scheme for energy-efficient control of building HVAC systems

Abstract

An autonomous adaptive MPC architecture is presented for control of heating, ventilation and air condition (HVAC) systems to maintain indoor temperature while reducing energy use. Although equipment use and occupant changes with time, existing MPC methods are not capable of automatically relearning models and computing control decisions reliably for extended periods without intervention from a human expert. We seek to address this weakness. Two major features are embedded in the proposed architecture to enable autonomy: (i) a system identification algorithm from our prior work that periodically re-learns building dynamics and unmeasured internal heat loads from data without requiring re-tuning by experts. The estimated model is guaranteed to be stable and has desirable physical properties irrespective of the data; (ii) an MPC planner with a convex approximation of the original nonconvex problem. The planner uses a descent and convergent method, with the underlying optimization problem being feasible and convex. A year long simulation with a realistic plant shows that both of the features of the proposed architecture - periodic model and disturbance update and convexification of the planning problem - are essential to get the performance improvement over a commonly used baseline controller. 23. Simultaneous identification of linear building dynamic model and disturbance using sparsity-promoting optimization

Abstract

We propose a method that simultaneously identifies a linear time-invariant model of a building's temperature dynamics and a transformed version of the unmeasured disturbance affecting the building. Our method uses l1-regularization to encourage the identified disturbance to be approximately sparse, which is motivated by the slowly-varying nature of occupancy that determines the disturbance. The proposed method involves solving a convex optimization problem that guarantees the identified black-box model possesses known properties of the plant, especially input-output stability and positive DC gains. These features enable one to use the method as part of a self-learning control system in which the model of the building is updated periodically without requiring human intervention. Results from the application of the method on data from a simulated and real building are provided.

24. Experimental and Computational Investigations of the Effects of Bridging Linkers on the Protein Corona of Nanoscale Metal–Organic Frameworks.

Abstract

Investigation of the protein corona of nanoscale metal–organic frameworks (NMOFs) is crucial for their safety assessment; however, it remains inadequately addressed. This study specifically focused on the impact of the bridging linker on the protein corona formation of NMOFs by utilizing nanoscale UiO66/UiO66-NH2 and human serum albumin (HSA) as models. Both UiO66 and UiO66-NH2 effectively quenched the endogenous fluorescence of HSA through a static quenching mechanism. Notably, UiO66 with higher hydrophobicity exhibited a stronger binding affinity (5.62 × 104 L·mol–1) with HSA than the UiO66-NH2–HSA system (2.51 × 104 L·mol–1) at 310 K. UiO66 also adsorbed a greater amount of HSA, induced conformational rearrangement in HSA to a greater extent, and finally led to a significant reduction in the protein surface hydrophobicity. Computer docking and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations further confirmed that HSA demonstrated a higher binding energy, lower total energy, and smaller solvent-accessible surface area when interacting with the bridging linker of UiO66. Moreover, although UiO66 displayed lower cytotoxicity toward 293T cells, UiO66-NH2 exhibited better blood compatibility as evidenced by the elevated values of activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT, 28–57 s) and prothrombin time (PT, 11.7–13.1 s). Abstract

ObjectiveTo analyze the mental health status and the influencing factors among the residents taking standardized residency training during the outbreak and stable period of COVID-19， so as to provide theoretical basis for their mental health education.MethodsOn February 8 to February 10 and April 11 to April 13， 2020， Symptom Checklist 90 （SCL-90）， Beck Srivastava Stress Inventory （BSSI） and Simplified Coping Style Questionnaire （SCSQ） were distributed in online chat groups involving all grades of residents taking standardized residency training in the Second Affiliated Hospital of Kunming Medical University. Through two rounds of questionnaire survey， non-probability sampling method was used to obtain survey samples， and their mental status were analyzed.ResultsA total of 159 valid questionnaires were collected in the first round， and 99 valid questionnaires in the second round. The first survey showed that the total score of SCL-90 was （117.69±37.74） and the detection rate of positive symptoms in SCL-90 was 25.8%， and mainly dominated by obsession， fear and interpersonal sensitivity. In the second survey， the results showed that the total score of SCL-90 was （127.19±51.44）， and the main positive symptoms included obsession， depression and interpersonal sensitivity， with a positive detection rate of 30.3 %.
