Populations in developed countries are ageing. However, the impact of senior citizens’ consumption on global carbon mitigation is poorly understood. Here we find that senior citizens have played a leading role in driving up GHG emissions in the past decade and are on the way to becoming the largest contributor. Considering the greenhouse gas footprint of household consumption across age groups in 32 developed countries, the senior contribution to national total consumption-based emissions increased from 25.2% to 32.7% between 2005 and 2015. Seniors in the United States and Australia have the highest per capita footprint, twice the Western average. The trend is mainly due to changes in expenditure patterns of seniors. The increasing carbon footprint of senior citizens will probably drive domestic production yet have limited effects on international carbon leakage. The demographic change poses more challenges in local mitigation and calls for deeper public mitigation efforts.

Investors, hidden at the top of the global supply chain, are the key beneficiaries of the entire chain. However, they appear to generate only a small number of direct emissions which may obscure the reality that they should undertake more climate responsibility. No systematic accounting and disclosure of carbon emissions are incorporated in the financial institution assets. Here, we examine the embodied carbon emissions of the 380 leading global asset managers, using industrial equity portfolios as an example, and show that the embodied carbon emissions of these companies' industrial portfolios have reached 636.97–875.88 MtCO2-eq, and are expected to rising rapidly in 2019. Over 90% of the financed carbon emissions were embodied in the industrial equity portfolios of the top 20 asset managers in North America and Europe. Meanwhile, weighted average carbon intensity (WACI) and carbon emission to revenue (CETR), reflecting institutions' carbon exposure and efficiency, have not decline tremendously over the last decades, despite divestment only occurring in a few typical high carbon-intensive industries. Moreover, the leading investee companies in the emissions embodied in the industrial equity portfolio were highly contributed by the leading investee companies in high carbon-intensive sectors. In the study, we propose an accounting framework that integrates macro-sector emissions data with micro-financial data to attribute carbon emissions embodied in equity investment activities to investors, which can inform targeted and effective climate reporting and action. Some large asset managers, for instance, play a pivotal role in portfolio investments' carbon emissions and therefore bear more responsibility for decarbonization equity portfolios.

Objective To detect the extracellular hydrogen ion (H+) flux of breast cancer tissue explants using noninvasive microtest technology (NMT) and assess how this flux correlates with the molecular subtype. Further more, we preliminarily explored the possibility of applying NMT as a treatment prescreening tool for predicting how docetaxel will affect tissue responses. Methods This study enrolled 30 breast cancer patients who underwent surgery in the Department of Breast Surgery at Beijing Hospital, Beijing, China. Tumor samples and the corresponding normal samples were excised from surgical specimens with a size of approximately 0.5 cm3. The NMT system was used to detect the H+ flux of tumor samples and corresponding normal samples. Then, the NMT system was used to assess the changes in H + flux after the tumor samples were treated with 10 mg/L docetaxel. Results All the samples produced stable H + flux that could be measured in real time. In 26 cases, we found that tumor samples exhibited stable and robust efflux of H+, whereas in the corresponding normal samples, we measured significant differences with H+ influx or mild efflux (cancer samples: 0.336 ± 0.307 pmol/cm− 2/sec− 1 vs. normal samples: -0.067 ± 0.131, p +, there were 4 luminal A type, 11 luminal B type, 6 HER2-positive type and 5 triple-negative type. Triple-negative tumors had a higher rate of H + efflux compared with luminal A, luminal B and HER2 positive tumors (p = 0.016, p = 0.018, p = 0.008). Among the 4 tumor samples that were treated with docetaxel, 3 samples showed inhibition of H + efflux by 50.5%, 28.8% and 8.3%, while efflux increased by 30.0% in 1 sample. Conclusion NMT can detect the H + flux of breast cancer tissue in real time. The H + flux of tumor samples was significantly different from that of normal samples. After treatment with docetaxel, the H + flux of tumor samples showed definite changes.

Under the dual carbon goals in China, the transition to a net-zero carbon economy demands massive amounts of capital, which must be provided and facilitated by financial institutions. Yet there are no accurate, annual, publicly available disclosures of the carbon emissions embodied in investments, leaving Chinese financial institutions facing significant carbon risks. To bridge this gap, this study looked at data from China’s 105 fund firms to measure the CO2 emissions embodied in their equity investments and carbon intensities from 2010 to 2020. The findings show that total financed emissions have been on a continuous upward trend since 2015, with large-sized fund firms contributing most. The overall trend for carbon intensity metrics shows a reduction in exposure to carbon-intensive assets and an increase in carbon efficiency. It is therefore crucial to identify the drivers of financed emissions and explore the potential for carbon reduction. Our findings suggest that some fund firms have already shifted their capital allocations to decarbonize their investment portfolios. Divesting from high-carbon assets and turning to high-tech sectors can help reduce carbon risk exposures and improve carbon efficiency, which is crucial if China’s institutional investors are to achieve a low-carbon transition and long-term sustainable development.

Summary Service industries are generally considered “green” because of their marginal direct emissions; however, they account for 65% of the world gross domestic product and over 20% of total global trade in 2019. Here, we quantify the evolution of carbon emissions embodied in services trade from 2010 to 2018 and identify the driving factors of emission change at the global and regional scales. The annual growth rate of embodied emissions exported from the Global South (2.0%) is double that of the Global North (1.0%), with a different trade structure. We further identify three trade patterns of service export in the Global South based on the bilateral trade partnership and annual growth rate. Three kinds of specific emission mitigation policies are proposed based on the characters of services trade and different trade structures between different regions. The results provide quantitative evidence currently lacking and critical to policy decision making.

The alteration in skeletal muscle fiber is a critical factor affecting livestock meat quality traits and human metabolic diseases. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are a diverse class of non-coding RNAs with a length of more than 200 nucleotides. However, the mechanisms underlying the regulation of lncRNAs in skeletal muscle fibers remain elusive. To understand the genetic basis of lncRNA-regulated skeletal muscle fiber development, we performed a transcriptome analysis to identify the key lncRNAs affecting skeletal muscle fiber and meat quality traits on a pig model. We generated the lncRNA expression profiles of fast-twitch Biceps femoris (Bf) and slow-twitch Soleus (Sol) muscles and identified the differentially expressed (DE) lncRNAs using RNA-seq and performed bioinformatics analyses. This allowed us to identify 4581 lncRNA genes among six RNA libraries and 92 DE lncRNAs between Bf and Sol which are the key candidates for the conversion of skeletal muscle fiber types. Moreover, we detected the expression patterns of lncRNA MSTRG.42019 in different tissues and skeletal muscles of various development stages. In addition, we performed a correlation analyses between the expression of DE lncRNA MSTRG.42019 and meat quality traits. Notably, we found that DE lncRNA MSTRG.42019 was highly expressed in skeletal muscle and its expression was significantly higher in Sol than in Bf, with a positive correlation with the expression of Myosin heavy chain 7 (MYH7) (r = 0.6597, p = 0.0016) and a negative correlation with meat quality traits glycolytic potential (r = &minus, 0.5447, p = 0.0130), as well as drip loss (r = &minus, 0.5085, p = 0.0221). Moreover, we constructed the lncRNA MSTRG.42019&ndash, mRNAs regulatory network for a better understanding of a possible mechanism regulating skeletal muscle fiber formation. Our data provide the groundwork for studying the lncRNA regulatory mechanisms of skeletal muscle fiber conversion, and given the importance of skeletal muscle fiber types in muscle-related diseases, our data may provide insight into the treatment of muscular diseases in humans.

Energy use is becoming more efficient due to technological innovations. We focused on the transportation sector in China to develop a national multisector computable general equilibrium (CGE) model for analyzing the rebound effect from an improvement of 10% in the energy efficiency. We compared the size of the energy rebound effect at both the macroeconomic and sectoral levels in different transportation modal subsectors, namely rail, road, water, and air travel. The findings showed that the magnitude of the rebound effect varies across the transportation modes. This is particularly true for the air transportation sector, which has an economy-wide rebound effect of 30.1% and an own-sector rebound effect of 74.6% because of a sharp increase in the export demand for air transport services. We also quantitatively evaluated the contribution of energy efficiency improvement in the transportation sector to China’s economic growth and carbon reductions and found a positive dividend effect on the economy as well as the environment. The modeling results suggest that improving overall transportation energy efficiency by 10% generates an economy-wide welfare gain of approximately 29 billion yuan, while 19 billion yuan are attributable to a more efficient road transportation subsector. Furthermore, to offset the effects of these mode-specific rebound effects, we simulated the effectiveness of different policies and solutions. These included economic instruments in the form of energy, environmental, and carbon taxes, household transport consumption structure adjustments, and energy structure adjustments. This study revealed that combining these sustainable development policies offers opportunities for economy-wide multisectoral improvements in energy savings, emissions reduction, and economic benefits.

Enterprises are at the forefront of climate actions and multinational enterprises (MNEs) engage in foreign direct investment, allowing them substantial influence over the entire supply chain. Yet emissions embodied in the international supply chains of MNEs are poorly known. Here we trace the carbon footprints of foreign affiliates of MNEs and show that the gross volume of global carbon transfer through investment peaked in 2011, mainly driven by the decline in carbon intensity. Despite declining carbon footprints of developed country-based MNEs, there has been a notable increase in carbon transfer sourced from the Chinese mainland. We propose an investment-based accounting framework to allocate carbon footprints of MNEs to the investing country. Investment-based accounting of emissions could inform targeted and effective climate policies and actions. For instance, some large MNEs play a crucial role in carbon transfer, therefore their originating country should bear more responsibilities of carbon emission reduction as an investor. Multinational enterprises and their international supply chains can have large carbon footprints, but there is mitigation potential. Global carbon transfer through investment has declined in recent years, and this framework, assigning emissions to the investing country, would inform further action.

It is of great significance to identify the critical influential factors of pollutant emissions for emission mitigation. However, city disparity implies different priorities for regional mitigation. This study aims to estimate the consumption-based emissions of 309 prefecture-level cities in China based on the multi-region input-output table and the sectoral NOx emission inventory and investigate the emission transfer phenomenon among cities and sectors. In addition, a geographically weighted regression method is used to analyze the spatial heterogeneity in the driving factors of regional consumption-based emissions. The results reveal that the top 10 cities in consumption-based emissions account for 25.2% of emissions and contribute 22.6% to GDP. The consumption-based emissions are mainly driven by local demand (72.79%) at the regional level and by construction activities (94.43%) at the sectoral level. Besides, the results also show the spatial variances in contributions of driving forces to consumption-based emissions. Economic growth has been identified as the most important factor which promotes consumption-based emissions. However, disposable personal income, per capita road area, urbanization, and percentage of tertiary industry GDP are conducive to reduce consumption-based emissions in some cities of China. It could be concluded that policies without consideration of the emissions from a consumption perspective are difficult to achieve effective emission reduction.

Recently, China has committed to decommissioning the heavy metal (HM) intensive coal-fired power plants (CFPPs), small units especially, yet a quantitative assessment for the impact on HM emissions remains poorly understood. This study, for the first time, compiles a plant-specific inventory for six HMs (Hg, As, Se, Pb, Cd, and Cr) avoided by CFPPs decommissioned in China during the 12th Five Year Plan period. The reduced HM amounts to 271.58 t (9.19 t Hg, 45.84 t As, 60.76 t Se, 85.30 t Pb, 1.74 t Cd, and 68.75 t Cr), accounting for 12.71% of the total emissions from all China's CFPPs in 2010. Small units which have low boiler efficiency and lack air pollutant control devices are more than tenfold HM-intensive as the large units. The detailed HM emission factors for each CFPP decommissioned in each provincial region are also identified. HM content in the coal consumed is a key parameter to determine their corresponding emission factors, while the capacity of decommissioned coal plants plays a decisive role in the reduced emissions. The high-resolution inventory not only verifies China's progress in alleviating HM pollution, but also provides basis for further investigation into HM relevant environmental and human health impact.

Air pollution presents a serious public health risk globally, particularly in fast industrializing countries such as China. Effectiveness of local air pollution control measures is influenced by external forces such as atmospheric emission transport and interprovincial trade. However, there is lack of research on comparison of these two indicators and local indicators (e.g. per capita income and emissions) determines the responsibility allocation in pollution control. In this paper, cross-provincial air pollution is stimulated via atmospheric transport (atmospheric linkage indicator) based on Weather Research and Forecasting/Comprehensive Air Quality Model with Extensions (WRF/CAMx) model. The air pollutants embodied in interprovincial trade (trade linkage indicator) was studied by using the latest multi-regional input-output (MRIO) model. This study revealed the significant influence of atmospheric transport on neighboring provinces. However, transport of trade-induced embodied emissions affects both neighboring areas and larger areas. According to aggregation analysis of these two indicators, in most provinces of China, direction of atmospheric transport contradicts to that of the trade-induced transport. These findings are used to analyze the rationality of regional differences in environmental tax rate in the new environmental protection tax law of China. By comparing the local and interregional linkage indicators, we found the current environment tax for air pollutants was mainly affected by per capita income whereas other environment and linkage indicators show little correlation. Therefore, we integrated environment and linkage indicators to propose adjusted provincial environment tax rates plan for air pollutants as a cost sharing mechanism. The results of this paper provide novel perspective for central government to adjust fairness environmental responsibility between provinces of China by tax policy. Glycolytic potential (GP) calculated based on glucose, glycogen, glucose-6-phosphate, and lactate contents is a critical factor for multiple meat quality characteristics. However, the genetic basis of glycolytic metabolism is still unclear. In this study, we constructed six RNA-Seq libraries using longissimus dorsi (LD) muscles from pigs divergent for GP phenotypic values and generated the whole genome-wide gene expression profiles. Furthermore, we identified 25,880 known and 220 novel genes from these skeletal muscle libraries, and 222 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between the higher and lower GP groups. Notably, we found that the Lactate dehydrogenase B (LDHB) and Fructose-2, 6-biphosphatase 3 (PFKFB3) expression levels were higher in the higher GP group than the lower GP group, and positively correlated with GP and lactic acid (LA), and reversely correlated with pH value at 45 min postmortem (pH45min). Besides, LDHB and PFKFB3 expression were positively correlated with drip loss measured at 48 h postmortem (DL48h) and drip loss measured at 24 h postmortem (DL24h). Collectively, we identified a serial of DEGs as the potential key candidate genes affecting GP and found that LDHB and PFKFB3 are closely related to GP and GP-related traits. Our results lay a solid basis for in-depth studies of the regulatory mechanisms on GP and GP-related traits in pigs.

Production fragmentation makes the air pollution policy no longer at the local scale but requires accounting more about embodied emissions cross-region through supply chains. Here, we map the consumption-driven NO

PM2.5 is the major component of severe haze pollution in China. Some studies have reported that large scale of PM2.5 related emissions are derived from trade activities. However, little research has been carried out about the assessment of emissions related to different trade patterns, especially the trade related to spatial production fragmentation. Based on multi-regional input–output model, this study analyzed the transfer of PM2.5 related emissions through three different trade patterns in China, i.e. the trade of final products (T_f), the trade of intermediate products for the last stage of production (T_i) and the trade for the domestic and global value chain (T_v). Results showed that the trade of intermediate products from inland regions to coastal regions in China contributed to additional PM2.5 related emissions thereby being in line with the pollution haven hypothesis, i.e. a shifting of pollution-intensive industry from countries with stringent environmental regulations to countries with weaker environmental regulations. In contrast, the trade of final products from coastal regions to inland regions generated savings in PM2.5 related emissions. The largest share of embodied air pollutants is from T_v trade pattern, which means spatial production fragmentation has become a key factor to affect embodied emissions flows.

Crediting green trade patterns is essential for effective national carbon accounting. Neither production- nor consumption-based accounting satisfies this condition. Thus, Kander et al. [Kander, A., Jiborn, M., Moran, D.D., Wiedmann, T.O., 2015. National greenhouse-gas accounting for effective climate policy on international trade. Nature Climate Chang. 5(5):431–435.] proposed a technology-adjusted consumption-based carbon accounting method that focuses on interregional differences in sectoral carbon intensity. The intermediate input structure is also closely related to the production technology level. Therefore, this study recommends a new technology-adjusted consumption-based carbon accounting framework that distinguishes between direct and cumulative exports, forward and backward industrial linkages, and different trade patterns. Based on the consideration that production-based accounting will remain the core indicator for regional emissions in the near future, this study proposes a technology-adjusted production-based accounting framework. The empirical study is based on the World Input-Output Database, and the results indicate that technology-adjusted carbon accounting will redraw the global emissions map if the intermediate input linkage is considered. The technology-adjusted carbon accounting method satisfies the conditions of additivity, sensitivity, monotonicity, and scale invariance, through proper selection of the world average emissions multipliers.

Multinational enterprises actively participate in global production networks. However, the current global value chain accounting framework fails to consider the emissions originating from the production activities of multinational enterprises in the host country and may underestimate the carbon emissions embodied in global value chain activities. This paper proposed an Inter-Country Input-Output decomposition framework that can distinguish domestic firms and multinational enterprises and recalculated global value chain emissions including emissions embodied in international trade (trade-related GVC emissions), foreign direct investment (FDI-related GVC emissions), and both (trade and FDI related GVC emissions). We found that 1) the carbon emissions originating from global value chain activities were underestimated by about 13.8 percentage points under the original framework in 2016, and a large part was classified as emissions stemming from pure domestic production activities; 2) the FDI-related GVC emissions were notable in high-income economies and high-tech manufacturing sectors; 3) foreign direct investment mainly drove the emissions of upstream domestic firms through the joint domestic production linkage between domestic firms and multinational enterprises, especially in upper-middle-income countries; 4) from 2005 to 2016, the FDI-related GVC emissions increased by approximately 704.6 million tons, which was mainly attributed to the scale effect, whereas the carbon intensity effect caused a reduction. The results of this study exhibit a potential significance for the correct identification of the environmental impacts of global production fragmentation, and support policy decisions on national emission responsibilities and quotas determination, differentiated foreign investment decisions, and cleaner production development.

The key distinction between production-based and consumption-based accounting lies in the way in which trade-embodied emissions are allocated between producer and consumer regions. Yet, these two regions are not necessarily directly connected to each other in supply chains, due to spatial production fragmentation. To better understand the link from the production-based to the consumption-based regional carbon inventories, this paper defines the economic length of carbon transfer (ELCT) as the number of administrative border-crossing involved in the influence process of a region’s final demand on the carbon emissions of another region. Using a multi-regional input-output analysis framework for China, we propose an approach to calculating the ELCT related to a region’s production or demand for domestic consumption or international export. We find that the average ELCT in 2010 is 1.34 and that more than a quarter of interregional carbon transfer crosses provincial borders twice or more. The provincial and sectoral analysis of ELCT reveals that spatial production fragmentation is an important challenge to be conquered for successful implementation of consumption-based climate regulations.

This paper proposes that not only the size and component of carbon footprints are relevant to environmental policies but the border-crossing frequency associated with carbon footprints also has important policy implications, especially given that the fragmentation of production across national boundaries has been developing quickly in recent years. Based on the World Input Output Database, this paper traces carbon transfer along cross-border supply chains and proposes both the upstream and downstream decomposition of export rebates of the United States and the European Union. The carbon transfer from the United States and the European Union to other countries or regions is mainly through international trade in intermediate products, which may cross national borders multiple times. The multiple rebate revenue reaches 422.14 million dollars, and the problem of multiple rebates is much more serious for the sectors with a greater degree of global production fragmentation, such as the electrical and optical equipment sector. In addition, export rebates are mainly targeted at the carbon emissions that are generated in the electricity generation sector and embodied in exports.

The fragmentation of production across national boundaries has become an important feature of the world economy. This present paper adopts the viewpoint that not only the size and composition of carbon footprints are relevant but also the border-crossing frequency associated with these carbon footprints, which is defined as the number of borders a product crosses in a supply chain; this process will affect the spatial accounting of the carbon emissions produced to support the economic activity. The calculation of border-crossing frequencies of carbon footprint is accomplished by decomposing the Leontief inverse matrix derived from the world input–output database. We find that the aggregated average border crossing frequencies of carbon footprints show an increasing tendency, which is influenced by the economic crisis obviously. The policy application focuses on the United States, which we assume to levy carbon tariffs on foreign emissions embodied in imports. We find that the indirect carbon tariff on emissions embodied in international trade take a significant share. The border carbon adjustments are mainly targeted at emissions generated in China, which also pays the greatest share of the tariff burden. The implication of carbon tariffs faces the problem of multiple taxation.

Pollution haven hypothesis is an important debate on the environmental effects of international trade, the pattern of which has been reshaped obviously by global production fragmentation recently. The production process is distributed globally, and the pollution haven effect of international trade is becoming more complicated. For instance, intermediate product trade corresponds to the largest share of embodied emissions, and the share of emissions induced by the global value chain related trade is increasing gradually. The aim of this paper is to make a comprehensive analysis on the pollution haven hypothesis in carbon emissions embodied in three different trade patterns from global, bilateral, and national perspectives. We propose a method to parcel the pollution haven hypothesis in a multi-regional input–output analysis and discuss the contribution of production fragmentation for global emissions. It is found that international production fragmentation generates global emissions savings. The intermediate product trade has a negative balance of avoided emissions. The final product trade becomes increasingly less environmentally effective during the period 1995–2009. There are significant differences in the environmental effects of different trade patterns for each country.

Simple Summary Myostatin (MSTN) is a transcriptional growth factor that inhibits the development and growth of skeletal muscle. The MSTN-deficient animals display an increase in skeletal muscle mass known as double-muscling. Therefore, MSTN becomes an important target for improving lean meat production in livestock husbandry. There are many local pig breeds in China, but because of the slow growth, poor feed conversion, and low lean meat percentage and other unsatisfactory qualities, pure local breeds are rarely used on commercial farms. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effects of MSTN single allele mutation on carcass composition in Meishan crossbred pigs and demonstrate a way to increase lean meat yield while maintaining prolificacy and good meat quality of local pig crossbreeds. This has significant implications for the widespread use and conservation of local pig breeds in China. Abstract The Meishan pig is a traditional Chinese native breed, known for its excellent reproduction performance that is widely used in commercial pig production through two-way or three-way crossbreeding systems. However, the lean meat yield of Meishan crossbred pigs is still very low and cannot meet the market demand. To evaluate the lean meat yield of Meishan crossbred pigs, six wild-type Meishan sows were artificially inseminated by using the MSTN+/− Duroc boar semen in this experiment. Some reproductive performance-related traits of Meishan sows were recorded to ensure that semen from MSTN knockout Duroc boar did not affect offspring production, including total births, live births, sex, and litter weight. In total, 73 piglets were obtained and 63 were alive. Male to female ratio was close to 1: 1. because of factors such as disease, only 43 pigs were utilized, including 28 MSTN mutant pigs (MSTN+/−) and 15 MSTN homozygous pigs (MSTN+/+). We compared the growth performance and carcass performance of these full or half-sib populations and found that there were no differences between MSTN+/− and MSTN+/+ genotypes for live animal measures including average daily gain (ADG), body dimensions, or ultrasonic measurement of fat thickness when pigs were harvested after 120 days of feeding. Conversely, the MSTN+/− pigs had higher dressing percentage and lean meat percentage, lower level of carcass fat, larger longissimus muscle area, less percentage of skin and skeleton, thinner average backfat thickness, and lower intramuscular fat (IMF) content than MSTN+/+ pigs. In conclusion, the production of MSTN+/− mutant progeny from Meishan females resulted in improved carcass composition, providing a feasible solution to improve the lean meat yield of Chinese local fat-type pig breeds.

China is experiencing serious atmospheric pollution, which also exhibits significant spatial heterogeneity. The Chinese government has implemented targeted pollution control measures at the city level, emphasizing coordination among cities to prevent and control air pollution in key regions such as Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) urban agglomeration. This study combined an inter-city multi-regional input-output (MRIO) model with an air quality dispersion model consisting of a weather research and forecasting (WRF) model and the CALPUFF model (WRF/CALPUFF) to study the inter-city economic consumption, pollutant emission and concentration among 13 cities in BTH urban agglomeration. NOx is chosen as an example. The combined effects of economic linkage and atmospheric transport show that NOx concentrations in cities in the BTH urban agglomeration are attributable to three consumption sources: a local contribution from the target city's own local economic consumption (average, 25%), and non-local consumption contributions, including other cities in the BTH urban agglomeration (average, 36%) and regions outside of BTH (average, 39%). Compared with the contributions to NOx concentrations calculated using only the MRIO model or atmospheric transport stimulation model, the results of this paper quantify that the consumption outside of a city could provide a greater impact on the city's air quality due to the combined effects of economic linkage and atmospheric transport. To avoid negative impacts of emission reduction targets on economic consumption, governmental regional pollution control policies should consider the combined effects of economic linkage and atmospheric transport.

Production fragmentation not only reshapes trade patterns but also reallocates trade-related emissions. This study employs China's multi-regional input-output tables for 2007, 2010 and 2012 to explore the effect of production fragmentation on virtual carbon trade derived from three trade patterns, i.e. final goods trade, intermediate goods trade for the final stage of production, and value chain-related trade. Results showed that inter-provincial trade within China reduced the national carbon emissions by 208 Mt. and 114 Mt. in 2007 and 2012. The first two trade patterns contributed to the reduction, while value-chain-related trade resulted in carbon growth. The four trillion yuan stimulus package promoted the development of energy intensive industries while inter-provincial trade increased national carbon emissions by 247 Mt. in 2010. Moreover, this study revealed a list of provinces, trade patterns and sectors with the high carbon reduction potential.

The different skeletal muscle fiber types exhibit distinctively different physiological and metabolic properties, and have been linked to both human metabolic diseases and meat quality traits in livestock. Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are a new class of endogenous RNA regulating gene expression, but regulatory mechanisms of skeletal muscle fibers involved in circRNAs remain poorly understood. Here, we constructed circRNA expression profiles of three fast-twitch biceps femoris (Bf) and three slow-twitch soleus (Sol) muscles in pigs using RNA-seq and identified 16,342 distinct circRNA candidates. Notably, 242 differentially expressed (DE) circRNAs between Bf and Sol muscles were identified, including 105 upregulated and 137 downregulated circRNAs, and are thus potential candidates for the regulation of skeletal muscle fiber conversion. Moreover, Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment analysis of host genes of DE circRNAs revealed that host genes were mainly involved in skeletal muscle fiber-related GO terms (e.g., muscle contraction, contractile fiber part, and Z disk) and skeletal muscle fiber-related signaling pathways (e.g., AMPK and cGMP-PKG). We also constructed co-expression networks of DE circRNA-miRNA-mRNA using previously acquired high-throughput sequencing mRNA and miRNA data, from which 112 circRNA-miRNA and 95 miRNA-mRNA interactions were identified. Multiple circRNAs essentially serve as a sponge for miR-499-5p, which is preferentially expressed in slow-twitch muscle and reduces the severity of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). Taken together, a series of novel candidate circRNAs involved in the growth and development of porcine skeletal muscle was identified. Furthermore, they provide a comprehensive circRNA resource for further in-depth research on the regulatory mechanisms of circRNA in the formation of skeletal muscle fiber, and may provide insights into human skeletal muscle diseases.

Skeletal muscle is a major component of body mass and plays a central role in the control of whole-body metabolism in humans and animals. Therefore, elucidation of the underlying mechanisms of skeletal growth and development are expected to lead to the discovery of novel genes and pathways related to muscle disease. miR-206, a skeletal muscle-specific microRNA, plays a crucial role in myogenesis; however, miR-206 is known to function in myogenic differentiation, whether or not it affects muscle cells' proliferation, and the underlying mechanisms are unknown. In this study, we investigated the effect of miR-206 on muscle cell proliferation and differentiation, as well as its effect on myofiber type conversion using mouse C2C12 myoblasts. The results showed that overexpression of miR-206 inhibited cell proliferation and promoted muscle cell differentiation, but it did not affect myofiber type conversion. Summary Our future is urban. With more than two-thirds of the global population expected to live in cities by 2050, urban sustainability is an essential part of sustainable development but remains poorly understood for urban agglomerations, which continue to develop and grow. Here, we construct a multiregional input-output table at the city level and investigate the impacts of water and carbon flows on the intercity supply chain of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei agglomeration in 2012. Our analysis reveals an economic-environmental imbalance whereby Beijing and Tianjin prosper at the expense of Hebei cities. Hebei cities work as producers for Beijing and Tianjin, such that services and goods exported from the Hebei region account for more than 60% of the region's carbon emissions and water use. Economic benefits are also exported. In the case of five key Hebei cities, only 38% of the region's gross domestic product is retained within the cities. This disparity has important implications for equality, prosperity, and sustainability and demonstrates the importance of considering supply chains from the city networks perspective.

At times, certain areas of China suffering from water shortages. While China's government is spurring innovation and infrastructure to help head off such problems, it may be that some water conservation could help as well. It is well-known that water is embodied in traded goods—so called “virtual water trade” (VWT). In China, it seems that many water-poor areas are perversely engaged in VWT. Further, China is engaging in the global trend of fragmentation in production, even as an interregional phenomenon. Perhaps something could be learned about conserving or reducing VWT, if we knew where and how it is practiced. Given some proximate causes, perhaps viable policies could be formulated. To this end, we employ China's multiregional input-output tables straddling two periods to trace the trade of a given region's three types of goods: local final goods, local intermediate goods, and goods that shipped to other regions and countries. We find that goods traded interregionally in China in 2012 embodied 30.4% of all water used nationwide. Nationwide, water use increased substantially over 2007–2012 due to greater shipment volumes of water-intensive products. In fact, as suspected, the rise in value chain-related trade became a major contributing factor. Coastal areas tended to be net receivers of VWT from interior provinces, although reasons differed, e.g. Shanghai received more to fulfill final demand (67.8% of net inflow) and Zhejiang for value-chain related trade (40.2% of net inflow). In sum, the variety of our findings reveals an urgent need to consider trade types and water scarcity when developing water resource allocation and conservation policies.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are endogenous short non-coding RNAs and exert their function by targeting mRNAs of genes. miRNA-206 (miR-206) is exclusively expressed in adult skeletal muscles and plays an important role in myogenesis. However, the regulatory mechanisms of miR-206 in myoblasts proliferation and differentiation are still limited. In this study, we validated that Notch3 is a direct target gene of mouse miR-206 using dual-luciferase reporter assay and miR-206-overexpressed experiments. Furthermore, we demonstrated that the negative effect of overexpression of miR-206 and knockdown of Notch3 on C2C12 cells proliferation, and found that the effect was produced by controlling the transition of G0/G1 and S phase in C2C12 cell cycle. In summary, our results provide direct evidences that miR-206 regulates skeletal muscle cells proliferation and cell cycle arrest partly by targeting the Notch3 gene, which strengthens our understanding of regulatory mechanisms on miR-206 in skeletal muscle growth and development.

In livestock, glycolytic potential (GP) is a critical indicator for evaluating the meat quality. To date, two major genes protein kinase AMP-activated γ3 non-catalytic subunit gene (PRKAG3) and phosphorylase kinase catalytic subunit gamma 1(PHKG1), and corresponding cause mutations influencing GP have been confirmed in pigs. Therefore, the aim of this study to identify the novel candidate genes and variations related to GP-related traits using a four-hybrid pig model [Pietrain (P)× Duroc (D)] ×[(Landrace) ×(Yorkshire)]. We totally constructed six RNA-seq libraries using longissimus dorsi (LD) muscles, and each library contained two higher GP (H) or two lower GP (L) individuals. A total of 525, 698 and 135 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified between H11 vs L11, H9 vs L9, and H5 vs L5 groups using PossionDis method, respectively. Notably, we found 97 non-redundant DEGs were mapped to GP related QTLs from three paired comparison groups. Moreover, 69 DEGs were identified between H (H11, H9 and H5) and L (L11, L9 and L5) groups using NOIseq method. Additionally, 1,076 potential specific SNPs were figured out between H and L groups, and approximately 40 large Indels with a length ≥ 5bp were identified in each sequencing library. In conclusion, our data provide foundation for further confirming the key genes and the functional mutations affecting GP-related traits in pigs, and also pave the way for elucidating the underling molecular regulatory mechanisms of glycogen metabolism in future study. Moreover, this study might provide valuable information for study on human glycogen storage diseases.

In recent years, evaluating the emissions embodied in trade (EEIT) has become an important area of policy and research. Multiregional input-output (MRIO) analysis, which links producers and final consumers, is a widely-used method for quantifying the EEIT. However, the role of intermediate trade in driving changes in the EEIT is still not fully incorporated in MRIO analysis and as a result poorly understood. Here, we present a framework that separately identifies the drivers of the emissions embodied in the trade of final and intermediate products. We implement this framework in a case study in which we analyse the changes in CO2 emissions embodied in interprovincial trade in China from 2007 to 2012. We find that the largest changes are a rising final demand, which is associated with increased emissions that are to some extent offset by decreasing emissions intensity and changing interregional dependency. Regionally, the rising imports and the growth in final demand in less developed regions in the north and central (e.g., Hebei and Henan) reduced the CO2 emissions outsourced by central coastal regions and drove the traded embodied CO2 flows between the central and western regions. The framework enriches our understanding of the role played by intermediate trade in the relocation of emissions.
