Millimetre wave and THz applications are expected to be available soon in various industrial environments, such as for imaging systems used for non-destructive quality control, as well as for short-range broadband telecommunications. Moreover, recent developments in medical imaging, diagnosis, and therapy bring to the foreground the topic of millimeter waves and THz radiation safety. In this presentation, a summary of the available studies related to health risk evaluation due to such exposures will be provided, together with the specific research recommendations and priorities

Abstract

Alzheimer's disease involves the formation of plaques of amyloid beta (A?), that induce cellular damage, including oxidative DNA damage. This study aims to investigate the capability of RF exposure to reduce the A?-induced DNA damage in SH-SY5Y cells. To this purpose a dose-response curve of A? has been set up in terms of DNA migration, and preliminary results on the effect of RF are reported.

Abstract

Human peripheral blood leukocytes from healthy volunteers have been employed to investigate the induction of genotoxic effects following 2 h exposure to 900 MHz radiofrequency radiation. The GSM signal has been studied at specific absorption rates (SAR) of 0.3 and 1 W/kg. The exposures were carried out in a waveguide system under strictly controlled conditions of both dosimetry and temperature. The same temperature conditions (37.0 +/- 0.1 degrees C) were realized in a second waveguide, employed to perform sham exposures. The induction of DNA damage was evaluated in leukocytes by applying the alkaline single cell gel electrophoresis (SCGE)/comet assay, while structural chromosome aberrations and sister chromatid exchanges were evaluated in lymphocytes stimulated with phytohemagglutinin. Alterations in kinetics of cell proliferation were determined by calculating the mitotic index. Positive controls were also provided by using methyl methanesulfonate (MMS) for comet assay and mitomycin-C (MMC), for chromosome aberration, or sister chromatid exchange tests. No statistically significant differences were detected in exposed samples in comparison with sham exposed ones for all the parameters investigated. On the contrary, the positive controls gave a statistically significant increase in DNA damage in all cases, as expected. Thus the results obtained in our experimental conditions do not support the hypothesis that 900 MHz radiofrequency field exposure induces DNA damage in human peripheral blood leukocytes in this range of SAR.

Abstract

A numerical model, usually employed to analyze the electroporation phenomenon in eukaryotic cells exposed to high voltage electric pulses with duration in the ms to mu s time scale, is extended to investigate the electroporation onset and dynamics induced by nanosecond pulsed electric fields (nsPEFs). The model allows to track the primary events and dynamics of the electroporation process on a time scale where available experimental methods do not provide reliable information. In particular the model, solved in the time domain, provides the spatial and temporal distribution of the transmembrane voltage and pore density of fixed radii around the plasma membrane. Moreover, it allows to optimize the experimental design of biological investigations in the framework of the mechanistic understanding of nsPEF. The obtained simulation results are correlated to biological observations of plasma membrane permeabilization in human lymphoblastoid Jurkat T-cells exposed to nsPEFs with variable pulse amplitude, as assessed by YO-PRO1 dye uptake.

Abstract

The design and realization of a nanosecond, high-voltage electric pulse generator for bioelectrical applications is reported in this paper. A Blumlein type architecture was adopted, with some modifications, and realized in a microstrip line configuration with meander-shaped conducting strips, and with ultra-fast, high voltage solid state switches. Three microstrip-lines have been realized in such a way that, being interchangeable within the structure, they allow to match different load impedances. A fiber optic-based system was also realized to separate the high voltage side of the system from the switch-control circuit. The system is suitable for applying high voltage nanosecond electric pulses, with variable pulse duration, amplitude, repetition rate and polarity, to liquid media with different electromagnetic characteristics, hosted in electroporation cuvettes with different gap dimensions.
