Recognizing these contributions is important for encouraging increased involvement and creating an equitable environment in which women can thrive. This Roadmap on Women in Applied Physics, written by women scientists and engineers, is intended to celebrate women’s accomplishments, highlight established and early career researchers enlarging the boundaries in their respective fields, and promote increased visibility for the impact women have on applied physics research. Perspectives cover the topics of plasma materials processing and propulsion, super-resolution microscopy, bioelectronics, spintronics, superconducting quantum interference device technology, quantum materials, 2D materials, catalysis and surface science, fuel cells, batteries, photovoltaics, neuromorphic computing and devices, nanophotonics and nanophononics, and nanomagnetism. Our intent is to inspire more women to enter these fields and encourage an atmosphere of inclusion within the scientific community.

Abstract

Das Luftmanagementsystem eines Brennstoffzellenflugzeugs versorgt die Brennstoffzelle mit verdichteter, befeuchteter und erwärmter Umgebungsluft. Die Wahl der optimalen Betriebsparameter und der besten Systemarchitektur ist insbesondere in großen Flughöhen eine komplexe Optimierungsaufgabe. Diese Arbeit untersucht auf Grundlage eines analytischen Modells den Entwurfsraum eines solchen Luftmanagementsystems. Als wichtigste Freiheitsgrade konnten die Wahl des Verdichtungsverhältnisses, der Sauerstoffstöchiometrie und der Befeuchtung stromauf der Brennstoffzelle identifiziert werden. Die wesentlichen Limitierungen des Entwurfsraums sind die Wasserbilanzen von Brennstoffzelle und System, sowie die maximal mögliche Befeuchtung. Für zwei Anwendungsfälle wurden optimale Betriebsparameter und Systemarchitekturen bestimmt. Es wurde gezeigt, dass Turbinen von grundlegender Bedeutung für den Wasserhaushalt und die Effizienz des Systems sind. Außerdem ist in den meisten Fällen eine Verdampfungskühlung der verdichteten Luft ausreichend. Ein Wärmetauscher wird nicht benötigt.

4. A Numerical Study on the Impact of Cathode Catalyst Layer Loading on the Open Circuit Voltage in a Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell

Abstract

The open circuit voltage (OCV) in a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is typically recorded as being approximately 300 mV lower than the equilibrium voltage computed by the Nernst equation. While a number of causes have been proposed, the voltage drop is generally attributed to the oxidation of crossover hydrogen in the cathode. A single phase, through-the-channel model is presented that includes hydrogen transport across the membrane, an empirical model for the hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) fit to experimental data obtained at high potentials and a multi-step kinetic model to describe the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Model predictions were compared to experimentally obtained OCVs and the results show that the model is capable of capturing the experimentally observed changes in OCV with platinum loading, as well as fuel cell performance; and that, at low Pt loadings, small quantities of unreacted hydrogen leave the cathode because the HOR is kinetically limited by oxide blocking and anion adsorption. A parametric study is used to show that a minimum OCV is achieved at ultra-low loadings. Results also show that only a multi-step ORR model can simultaneously capture polarization data and the OCV.

Abstract

The direct modeling-based Lattice Boltzmann Agglomeration Method (LBAM) is used to explore the electrochemical kinetics and multi-scalar/multi-physics transport inside the detailed structure of the porous and catalyst layers inside polymer electrolytemembrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). The complete structure of the samples is obtained by both micro- and nano- X-ray computed tomography (CT). LBAM is able to predict the electrochemical kinetics in the nanoscale catalyst layer and investigate the electrochemical variables during cell operation. This work shows success in integrating the lattice elements into an agglomerate structure in the catalyst layer. The predictions of LBAM were compared with a macro-kinetics model and experimental data. The overall predictions reveal that the local saturation of liquid water, distributions of electrochemical variables, and mass fraction across the samples can be controlled by the regulation of operating conditions. LBAM is a highly effective method of predicting the partial flooding issue, understanding the transport resistance, and investigating transport inside the porous transport layer that affects the overall cell performance in the PEMFC. The outcome of this work will be used for the optimization of porous structure design, durability, and water management improvement, for novel porous materials, particularly in the catalyst layer. 18. Kinetic Isotope Effect as a Tool To Investigate the Oxygen Reduction Reaction on Pt-based Electrocatalysts - Part II: Effect of Platinum Dispersion.

Abstract

We investigated the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) mechanism on Pt nanoparticles (NPs) dispersed on several carbon blacks with various physicochemical properties (i. e. specific surface ranging from 80 to 900 m 2  g -1 , different graphitization degree, etc.). Using the kinetic isotope effect (KIE) along with various electrochemical characterizations, we determined that the rate determining step (RDS) of the ORR is a proton-independent step when the density of Pt NPs on the surface of the carbon support is high. Upon decrease of the density of Pt NPs on the surface, the RDS of the ORR starts involving a proton, as denoted by an increase of the KIE >1. This underlined the critical role played by the carbon support in the oxygen reduction reaction electrocatalysis by Pt supported on high surface area carbon., (© 2020 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
