Abstract

We report the first theoretical study of hydroxyl vacancies in aluminosilicate and aluminogermanate single-walled metal-oxide nanotubes. The defects are modeled on both sides of the tube walls and lead to occupied and empty states in the band gap which are highly localized both in energy and in real space. We find different magnetization states depending on both the chemical composition and the specific side with respect to the tube cavity. The defect-induced perturbations to the pristine electronic structure are related to the electrostatic polarization across the tube walls and the ensuing change in Br{\o}nsted acid-base reactivity. Finally, the capacity to counterbalance local charge accumulations, a characteristic feature of these systems, is discussed in view of their potential application as insulating coatings for one-dimensional conducting nanodevices., Comment: manuscript: 4 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Negli ultimi anni nuove tecnologie, che prendono il nome di Next-generation sequecing (NGS), sono state sviluppate al fine di stabilire il profilo genetico delle singole cellule, permettendo un nuovo approccio allo studio della diversità delle cellule immunitarie. Una di queste tecnologie è il sequenziamento dell'RNA a livello di cellula singola (scRNA-Seq). In questo studio abbiamo valutato l’effetto a lungo termine (21 giorni) dell’esposizione a radioterapia ipo-frazionata (RT) sulle cellule non tumorali in un modello murino di glioma di alto grado. Topi maschi del ceppo C57Bl/6 sono stati divisi in due gruppi e sottoposti a trattamento sham o mediante RT. Due animali per gruppo sono stati selezionati per effettuare il scRNA-Seq a livello del tessuto cerebrale. Per ciascun’analisi 10mila cellule sono state processate tramite la piattaforma Chromium (10X) utilizzando la libreria “Chromium Single Cell 3’”. Le matrici di espressione genica grezza generate con CellRanger (v3.0.2) sono state analizzate mediante il software Seurat R (v4.0.1) e includendo nell’analisi solo le cellule che esprimevano almeno 700 geni (6'931 e 8'186 cellule per veicolo e RT rispettivamente). Le cellule tumorali sono state identificate mediante genotipizzazione utilizzando il softaware Souporcell e rimosse dall'analisi. La tecnica scRNA-Seq ha rivelato la presenza di 25 differenti cluster cellulari (con esclusione di 4 cluster di cellule tumorali). I cluster identificati includevano fenotipi differenti cellule di origine mieloide (macrofagi e microglia), cellule dendritiche, linfociti B e T, natural killer (NK) più cellule endoteliali, podociti, oligodendrociti, neuroni e astrociti. A 21 giorni dall’esposizione a RT si assiste ad un aumento relativo di macrofagi con riduzione dell’espressione di Tgfb1 e TSPO ma non di TREM2 e di linfociti T, soprattutto regolatori, con aumento dell’espressione di trascritti legati a infiammazione e metabolismo. Infine, il trattamento radioterapico induce un aumento di marcatori di reattività astrocitaria, stress cellulare e neuroprotezione come Lgal3, Nupr1 e Igfbpl1. In conclusione, a tre settimane dalla somministrazione di RT sono ancora presenti modificazioni della risposta immunitaria legata a macrofagi e linfociti e modificazioni a carico degli astrociti probabilmente legate al danno cellulare.

Abstract

Introduction Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most common primary brain tumour in adults with a median survival of 11-12 months. Standard therapy consists of radiotherapy (RT) plus chemotherapy with temozolomide (TMZ), and no alternative treatment is available. Using multimodal imaging and single-cell RNA-sequencing (scRNA-seq), we investigated the role of RT associated with TMZ and metformin (MET) in tumour response in a syngenic murine GBM model. Methods GL261 GBM cell line was orthotopically injected into C57Bl/6 mice. Animals were randomly divided into four groups: vehicle, RT alone, RT with TMZ, and RT with TMZ plus MET. The therapy response was monitored using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Positron Emission Tomography (PET) with [ 18 F]FLT (cell proliferation). Immunofluorescence, scRNA- seq analysis and PCR analysis were carried out on brain samples collected after 4 weeks of treatment. Results RT alone greatly increased survival (40.5 days) compared to vehicle (26.5 days), and when combined with drugs this effect was potentiated (148 days). At 4 weeks, the addition of TMZ alone or with MET significantly decreased tumour sizes visible at MRI and [ 18 F]FLT uptake compared to RT alone-treated mice. Through IF we observed modifications of different inflammatory markers and downregulation of IBA1 in the peri-tumoural area when RT was combined with drugs. RT alone decreased GFAP levels intra-tumourally. scRNA-seq revealed different clusters of cells including tumor cells, glioma associated macrophages and microglia, dendritic cells, natural killer and B and T lymphocytes. RT drugs combination reduced cluster signals more than RT alone. On the basis of cell cycle analysis cancer cells were classified in two sub-clusters: one in phase G2/M and the other in phase S that was more susceptible to RT alone. Abstract

Doped calcite (Fe-EDDHSA/CaCO3) was experimentally produced. The hypothesis of the present experiment is that, when roots get in contact with Fe-EDDHSA/CaCO3, the extrusion of H+ decreases the pH and dissolves calcite with subsequent release of Fe that becomes available for roots. The aim of the experiment was to determine whether doped calcite might represent a slow-release Fe source for in-vitro grown kiwifruit plantlets. The root elongation media used in the experiment had pH 8.0 and differed from each other for Fe supply as follow: Control medium that contained complete Murashige and Skoog salt mixture, including FeSO4 and Na2EDTA; calcite medium enriched with Fe-EDDHSA/CaCO3 as the only Fe source; −Fe medium without Fe. The absence of FeSO4 in the medium caused a reduction of plantlet growth. The final pH was higher with calcite medium than in control and −Fe. The addition of Fe-EDDHSA/CaCO3 increased Fe shoot concentration when compared with the −Fe medium. The data of the present experiment show the potential Fe slow release ability of Fe-EDDHSA/CaCO3; however, further investigation on Fe containing fertilizers should be conducted on potted plants to validate our results.

Abstract

The integrated application of experimentation, inelastic neutron scattering and the computational molecular mechanics (MM3) model were used to evaluate the 2:1 inclusion complex of calixarenes. Results show different spectral signatures between the 2:1 inclusion complex of p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene and p-xylene and the hypothetical 1:1 complex. The variation is attributed to the intense band identified only with p-xylene.

Abstract

A study was conducted to determine the energetically favored isomer set for the C116 fullerene using combined topological and quantum mechanical methods. The adjacency matrices were determined using spiral codes for the complete set of isomeric C116 fullerene structures. Results indicated that C116 parallels C84 wherein two isomers are almost isoenergetic. Findings also suggested that the most stable isomer of the fullerene supports the hexagon-neighbor rule.

Item does not contain fulltext, We investigate the photocatalytic performance of composites prepared in a one-step process by liquid-phase exfoliation of graphite in the presence of TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) at atmospheric pressure and in water, without heating or adding any surfactant, and starting from low-cost commercial reagents. These show enhanced photocatalytic activity, degrading up to 40% more pollutants with respect to the starting TiO2-NPs, in the case of a model dye target, and up to 70% more pollutants in the case of nitrogen oxides. In order to understand the photo-physical mechanisms underlying this enhancement, we investigate the photo-generation of reactive species (trapped holes and electrons) by ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy. We observe an electron transfer process from TiO2 to the graphite flakes within the first picoseconds of the relaxation dynamics, which causes the decrease of the charge recombination rate, and increases the efficiency of the reactive species photo-production.

Abstract

The morphology and the activity of a submarine caldera, Avyssos, at the northern part of Nisyros volcano in the South Aegean Sea (Greece), has been studied by means of remotely-operated underwater vehicle dives. The recorded time series of temperature and conductivity over the submarine volcano have been analyzed in terms of the generalized moments method. The findings of the mathematical analysis shed light on the volcanic activity, but also on the morphology (shape) of the submarine volcano. The conductivity time series indicates that the volcano is at rest, in agreement with other types of observations. On the other hand, temperature fluctuations, which in general describe a multifractal process, show that the submarine caldera operates as an open system that interacts with its surroundings. This type of analysis can be used as an indicator for the state of activity and the morphological structure (closed or open system) of a submarine volcano. © 2018 by the authors. 49. Multifractal structure of microscopic eye–head coordination

Abstract

Fixational eye movements contribute to visual processing. The information encoded in them is crucial for signals coming from fovea since it connects visual information with brain activity. We recorded microsaccades and tiny head movements at high resolution, with a sampling rate of 300 Hz. Microsaccades are likely influenced by heads's motion. Multifractal analysis shows that both movements are multiplicative processes of different origins, thereby reflecting the presence of different strategies. Microsaccades draw steps from a broad distribution of probability values, which likely indicates the way that the eyes use to maximize information, and satisfies a stretched exponential distribution. On the other hand, tiny head movements are described well by a lognormal distribution. Both movements, eye and head, are initially correlated and de-coherence of the two takes place for times greater than 29.2 seconds. © 2018 Elsevier B.V.
