A colored superhydrophobic surface on a stainless steel substrate was achieved by means of high temperature oxidation combined with subsequent spraying modification by superhydrophobic nano-silica film. Comprehensive characterizations of the surface were performed in terms of color, morphology, composition, wettability, and corrosion resistance by optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), contact angle, potentiodynamic polarization, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurement. At 400 °C, the surface was pale yellow, gradually turning yellow and then red as the temperature increased. At 700 °C and 800 °C, the surface colors were blue and dark brown, respectively. The samples with oxide films demonstrated lower contact angles, specifically 80.5° ± 2.5 at 400 °C, 79.1° ± 2.8 at 500 °C, and 75.6° ± 3.4 at 600 °C. The polarization resistance measured on the oxidized film formed at 600 °C exceeded 7.93 × 104 Ω·cm2. After spraying the treatment, these colorful surfaces exhibited superhydrophobicity, they were self-cleaning, and they satisfied anti-corrosion properties. The treatment performs as an excellent barrier and exhibits a high corrosion resistance of 4.68 × 106 Ω·cm2. The successful preparation of superhydrophobic colored surfaces offers the possibility of providing stainless steel with both decoration value and self-cleaning function simultaneously by our proposed chromium-free fabrication process. Textural morphology is an important factor influencing dry friction, and few studies have been conducted regarding the effects of single- and multi-shape textures on dry tribological properties. In this work, six types of textures including single- and multi-shape textures were produced on 40Cr steel samples by using a nanosecond laser. Reciprocating sliding tests under dry friction were conducted using a pin-on-disc friction tester. The influences of textured surfaces with different textures on tribological properties were investigated. Results showed that tribological properties were affected by different textural morphologies. The dimple-textured surface had the highest friction coefficient, followed by the groove-textured surface. The sinusoidal-textured surface had the lowest friction coefficient. The friction coefficients of multi-shape textured surfaces were lower than those of non-textured surfaces but higher than those of sinusoidal-textured surfaces. The wear properties of the tested surfaces were consistent with the friction-coefficient results. The sinusoidal- and sinusoidal–groove-textured surfaces can be considered as the optimum choices for dry reciprocating friction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A double-track lap cladding experiment involving gray cast iron was established to investigate the transformation mechanism of graphite phase and microstructure in a laser cladding heated region. The graphite phase and microstructure in different heated regions were observed under a microscope, and the distribution of elements in various heated regions was analyzed using an electron probe. Results show that no graphite existed in the cladding layer and in the middle and upper parts of the binding region. Only some of the undissolved small graphite were observed at the bottom of the binding region. Except the refined graphite size, the morphological characteristics of substrate graphite and graphite in the heat-affected zone were similar. Some eutectic clusters, which grew along the direction of heat flux, were observed in the heat-affected zone whose microstructure was transformed into a mixture of austenite, needle-like martensite, and flake graphite. Needle-like martensite around graphite was fine, but this martensite became sparse and coarse when it was away from graphite. Some martensite clusters appeared in the local area near the binding region, and the carbon atoms in the substrate did not diffuse into the cladding layer through laser cladding, which only affected the bonding area and the bottom of the cladding layer.
