Abstract

The productivity and health of our ocean hold some good solutions to the world’s challenges in socio-economy. However, climate change and waste discharge are changing the marine capacity to buffer human impacts, further challenging the marine industry, primarily in offshore oil and gas, shipping, and fishery operations. These encourage the blue economy, a sustainable development approach to utilize marine resources. Petroleum microbiology dealing with microbes that can respond, degrade, and alter crude oils, offers an unprecedented opportunity to achieve the knowledge- and science-based blue economy. However, the new-era petroleum microbiology for supporting the blue economy has yet to be systematically discussed. This review introduces the climate change impacts on key marine industrial sectors, highlights the critical role of advanced petroleum microbiology in supporting sustainable development, and offers insight into the challenges and future research opportunities in availing of petroleum microbiology for benefiting our marine environment and responsible economic growth.

31. Universal correlation between electronic factors and solute-defect interactions in bcc refractory metals

Abstract

The interactions between solute atoms and crystalline defects such as vacancies, dislocations, and grain boundaries play an essential role in determining physical, chemical and mechanical properties of solid-solution alloys. Here we present a universal correlation between two electronic factors and the solute-defect interaction energies in binary alloys of body-centered-cubic (bcc) refractory metals (such as W and Ta) with transition-metal substitutional solutes. One electronic factor is the bimodality of the d-orbital local density of states for a matrix atom at the substitutional site, and the other is related to the hybridization strength between the valance sp- and d-bands for the same matrix atom. Remarkably, the correlation is independent of the types of defects and the locations of substitutional sites, following a linear relation for a particular pair of solute-matrix elements. Our findings provide a novel and quantitative guidance to engineer the solute-defect interactions in alloys based on electronic structures.

Abstract

Understanding the oceanic carbon cycle, particularly in the Arctic regions, is crucial for addressing climate change. However, significant research gaps persist, especially regarding climate effects on the oceanic carbon cycle in these regions. This review systematically explores Arctic-related research, focusing on mechanisms, regulatory frameworks, and modelling approaches in the oceanic carbon cycle, carbon sink, climate change impact, and maritime shipping. The findings highlight the Arctic's limited observer presence and high operational costs, hindering the data availability and studies on carbon-cycle changes. This underscores the need to integrate real-time Arctic Ocean monitoring data. Carbon sink research urgently requires direct methods to measure anthropogenic carbon uptake and address uncertainties in air–ocean carbon fluxes due to sea ice melting. Unlike terrestrial carbon cycling research, carbon-cycle studies in the oceans, which are essential for absorbing anthropogenic emissions, receive insufficient attention, especially in the Arctic regions. Numerous policies often fall short in achieving effective mitigation, frequently depending on voluntary or market-based approaches. Analyzing carbon-cycle and sink models has uncovered limitations, primarily due to their global perspective, hampering in-depth assessments of climate change effects on the Arctic regions. To pave the way for future research, enhancing Arctic Ocean climate data availability is recommended, as well as fostering international cooperation in carbon-cycle research, enforcing carbon policies, and improving regional modelling in the Arctic Ocean.
