Search

Correlations between event-by-event fluctuations in the amplitudes of flow harmonics offer a novel way to access initial state properties in heavy-ion collisions. We have extensively predicted correlations in different flow harmonics based on multiparticle cumulants in $^{96}$Ru+$^{96}$Ru and $^{96}$Zr+$^{96}$Zr collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} =$ 200 GeV from a multiphase transport model. The state-of-the-art correlated nuclear distributions for the isobars were used to show the difference in nuclear deformations and neutron skin thickness, which have distinct characteristics seen in multiparticle azimuthal correlation. We also found a minimal effect of the shear viscosity effect on these multiparticle azimuthal correlations. Therefore, these studies could also serve as an additional tool for understanding the nature of the initial state fluctuations and nuclear structure, as well as input for possible in-depth dynamical studies for experimental measurement.

In relativistic heavy-ion collisions, the extractions of properties of quark-gluon plasma (QGP) are hindered by a limited understanding of its initial conditions, where the nuclear structure of the colliding ions play a significant role. In these proceedings, we present the first quantitative demonstration using ``collective flow assisted nuclear shape imaging" method to extract the quadrupole deformation and triaxiality from $^{238}$U using data from the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). We achieve this by comparing bulk observables in $^{238}$U+$^{238}$U collisions with nearly spherical $^{197}$Au+$^{197}$Au collisions. A similar comparative measurement performed in collisions of $^{96}$Ru+$^{96}$Ru and $^{96}$Zr+$^{96}$Zr, suggests the presence of moderate quadrupole deformation of $^{96}$Ru, large octupole deformation of $^{96}$Zr, as well as an apparent neutron skin difference between these two species. The longitudinal structure of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) consists of several components spanning various scales. However, its short-range features are often obscured by final-state non-flow correlations. Here, we introduce a data-driven approach to separate initial state structures from non-flow effects. The longitudinal structure is found having two distinct components: one that reflects the global twisted geometry of the QGP, and another that captures localized fluctuations in rapidity. The characteristics of this second component, contributing to short- and medium-range flow decorrelations, can be quantified by comparing collisions of nuclei with different shapes. The study of quark-gluon plasma (QGP) is hindered by our limited understanding of its initial conditions, particularly its longitudinal structure. We propose a novel approach that entails analyzing collisions involving nuclei of similar masses but different deformations. This strategy allows us to vary the initial conditions and collective expansion of the QGP, while minimizing the influence of non-flow correlations. Using a dynamical transport model, we have for the first time extracted the complete longitudinal structure of elliptic flow ($v_2$). Our findings reveal that although deformation significantly enhances the overall magnitude of $v_2$, it does not alter its longitudinal profile. This approach not only enables the separation of the rapidity dependence of flow from its rapidity decorrelations but also prompts further investigation into other nuclear structural features, such as nuclear skin thickness, to advance our understanding of the QGP's initial conditions., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures

Investigating nucleon-nucleon correlations inherent to the strong nuclear force is one of the core goals in nuclear physics research. We showcase the unique opportunities offered by collisions of $^{16}$O nuclei at high-energy facilities to reveal detailed many-body properties of the nuclear ground state. We interface existing knowledge about the geometry of $^{16}$O coming from \textit{ab-initio} calculations of nuclear structure with transport simulations of high-energy $^{16}$O+$^{16}$O collisions. Bulk observables in these processes, such as the elliptic flow or the fluctuations of the mean transverse momentum, are found to depend significantly on the input nuclear model and to be sensitive to realistic clustering and short-range repulsive correlations, effectively opening a new avenue to probe these features experimentally. This finding demonstrates collisions of oxygen nuclei as a tool to elucidate initial conditions of small collision systems while fostering connections with effective field theories of nuclei rooted in quantum chromodynamics (QCD).

Collisions of isobar nuclei, those with the same mass number but different structure parameters, provide a new way to probe the initial condition of the heavy ion collisions. Using transport model simulation of $^{96}$Ru+$^{96}$Ru and $^{96}$Zr+$^{96}$Zr collisions at two energies $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}=0.2$ TeV and 5.02 TeV, where $^{96}$Ru and $^{96}$Zr nuclei have significantly different deformations and radial profiles, we identify sources of eccentricities contributing independently to the final state harmonic flow $v_n$. The efficacy for flow generation differs among these sources, and explains the modest energy dependence of the isobar ratios of $v_n$. Additionally, a significant component of $v_n$ is found to be uncorrelated with the eccentricity but is instead generated dynamically during system evolution. Experimental measurement of these ratios at the LHC energy and comparison with RHIC energy can provide insight into the collision-energy dependence of the initial condition., Comment: 7 pages, 9 figures

Bulk nuclear structure properties, such as radii and deformations, leave distinct signatures in the final state of relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Isobaric collisions offer an easy route to establish explicit connections between the colliding nuclei's structure and the observable outcomes. Here, we investigate the effects of nuclear skin thickness and nuclear deformations on the elliptic flow ($v_2$) and its fluctuations in high-energy $^{96}$Ru+$^{96}$Ru and $^{96}$Zr+$^{96}$Zr collisions. Our findings reveal that the difference in skin thickness between these isobars only influences the inherent ellipticity of the collision systems, $v_2^{\mathrm{rp}}$. In contrast, differences in nuclear deformations solely impact the fluctuations of $v_2$ around $v_2^{\mathrm{rp}}$. Valuable information on the dynamics of expanding fluids can be inferred from the response of such systems to perturbations in their initial geometry. We apply this technique in high-energy $^{96}$Ru+$^{96}$Ru and $^{96}$Zr+$^{96}$Zr collisions to scrutinize the expansion dynamics of the quark-gluon plasma, where the initial geometry perturbations are sourced by the differences in deformations and radial profiles between $^{96}$Ru and $^{96}$Zr, and the collective response is captured by the change in anisotropic flow $V_n$ between the two collision systems. Using a transport model, we analyze how the nonlinear coupling between lower-order flow harmonics $V_2$ and $V_3$ to the higher-order flow harmonics $V_4$ and $V_5$, expected to scale as $V_{4\mathrm{NL}}=\chi_4 V_2^2$ and $V_{5\mathrm{NL}}=\chi_5 V_2V_3$, gets modified as one moves from $^{96}$Ru+$^{96}$Ru to $^{96}$Zr+$^{96}$Zr systems. We find that these scaling relations are valid to high precision: variations of order 20\% in $V_{4\mathrm{NL}}$ and $V_{5\mathrm{NL}}$ due to differences in quadrupole deformation, octupole deformation, and nuclear skin modify $\chi_{4}$ and $\chi_5$ by about 1--2\%. Percent-level deviations are however larger than the expected experimental uncertainties and could be measured. Therefore, collisions of isobars with different nuclear structures are a unique tool to isolate subtle nonlinear effects in the expansion of the quark-gluon plasma that would be otherwise impossible to access in a single collision system., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

The ratios of bulk observables, such as harmonic flow $v_2$ and $v_3$, between high-energy $^{96}$Ru+$^{96}$Ru and $^{96}$Zr+$^{96}$Zr collisions were recently argued to be a clean probe of the nuclear structure differences between $^{96}$Ru and $^{96}$Zr. Using a transport model simulation of isobar collisions, we quantify this claim from the dependence of the ratios $v_{2,\mathrm{Ru}}/v_{2,\mathrm{Zr}}$ and $v_{3,\mathrm{Ru}}/v_{3,\mathrm{Zr}}$ on various final state effects, such as the shear viscosity, hadronization and hadronic cascade. Although the $v_2$ and $v_3$ change by more than 50% when varying the final state effects, the ratios are unchanged. In addition, these ratios are independent of the transverse momentum $p_{\mathrm{T}}$ and hadron species, despite of up to a factor of two change in $v_n$. The ratio of mean transverse momentum $\left\langle p_{\mathrm{T}}\right\rangle$ is found to be controlled by the nuclear skin and nuclear radius, but is only slightly impacted by the final state effects. In relativistic heavy-ion collisions, the properties of quark-gluon plasma (QGP) and complex dynamics of multi-scale processes in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) are studied by analyzing the final state produced particles in a variety of different ways. The STAR isobar data of $^{96}$Ru+$^{96}$Ru and $^{96}$Zr+$^{96}$Zr collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}= 200$ GeV show that ratios of observables ($R_{\mathcal{O}}$) such as the multiplicity distribution, $p(N_{\mathrm{ch}})$, and the harmonic flow, $v_n$, deviate from unity, when presented as a function of centrality, $c$. These deviations have been attributed to the differences in the shape and radial profiles between $^{96}$Ru and $^{96}$Zr nuclei. In addition, the ratios $R_{\mathcal{O}}(x)$ depend on the choice of the event activity variable $x$, which could be either $N_{\mathrm{ch}}$ or centrality. We estimate the difference $\Delta R$ between these two choices, based on the published $p(N_{\mathrm{ch}})$, as well as those from a multiphase transport (AMPT) model with varied nuclear structure parameters: nuclear radius ($R_0$), surface diffuseness ($a_0$), quadrupole deformation ($\beta_2$), and octupole deformation ($\beta_3$). In contrary to $R_{v_n}(c)$, $R_{v_n}(N_{\mathrm{ch}})$ is nearly independent of the analysis approaches, suggesting that nonflow effects are better controlled by $N_{\mathrm{ch}}$ than $c$. The ratios of observables sensitive to the chiral magnetic effect (CME) are also much closer to unity for $x=N_{\mathrm{ch}}$ than $x=c$, indicating that the ratios calculated at the same $N_{\mathrm{ch}}$ provide a better baseline for the non-CME background. According to the AMPT results, the dominant parameter for $\Delta R$ is $a_0$, while $R_0$ and $\beta_n$ are only important in central collisions. In relativistic heavy-ion collisions, the event-by-event mean transverse momentum fluctuations are sensitive to overlap area and energy density fluctuations in initial state. We present a framework to calculate $p_{\mathrm{T}}$ fluctuations up to $4^{\mathrm{th}}$-order using standard and subevent methods, which is validated using the HIJING model. We observe a power-law dependence for cumulants of all orders as a function of charged particle multiplicity $N_{\mathrm{ch}}$, consistent with a simple independent source picture. The fluctuation in $pp$ collisions is observed to be larger than for $p+$Pb, Pb+Pb and Xe+Xe collisions at the same $N_{\mathrm{ch}}$ due to bias in number of contributing sources. The short-range correlations are greatly suppressed in subevent method in comparison to calculations based on the standard method. In the hydrodynamic model description of heavy ion collisions, the elliptic flow $v_2$ and triangular flow $v_3$ are sensitive to the quadrupole deformation $\beta_2$ and octupole deformation $\beta_3$ of the colliding nuclei. The relations between $v_n$ and $\beta_n$ have recently been clarified and were found to follow a simple parametric form. The STAR Collaboration have just published precision $v_n$ data from isobaric $^{96}$Ru+$^{96}$Ru and $^{96}$Zr+$^{96}$Zr collisions, where they observe large differences in central collisions $v_{2,\mathrm{Ru}}>v_{2,\mathrm{Zr}}$ and $v_{3,\mathrm{Ru}}

To assess the properties of the quark-gluon plasma formed in nuclear collisions, the Pearson correlation coefficient between flow harmonics and mean transverse momentum, $\rho\left(v_{n}^{2},\left[p_{\mathrm{T}}\right]\right)$, reflecting the overlapped geometry of colliding atomic nuclei, is measured. $\rho\left(v_{2}^{2},\left[p_{\mathrm{T}}\right]\right)$ was found to be particularly sensitive to the quadrupole deformation of the nuclei. In heavy ion collisions, elliptic flow $v_2$ and radial flow, characterized by event-wise average transverse momentum $[p_{\mathrm{T}}]$, are related to the shape and size of the overlap region, which are sensitive to the shape of colliding atomic nuclei. The Pearson correlation coefficient between $v_2$ and $[p_{\mathrm{T}}]$, $\rho_2$, was found to be particularly sensitive to the quadrupole deformation parameter $\beta$ that is traditionally measured in low energy experiments. Built on earlier insight that the prolate deformation $\beta>0$ reduces the $\rho_2$ in ultra-central collisions (UCC), we show that the prolate deformation $\beta<0$ enhances the value of $\rho_2$. As $\beta>0$ and $\beta<0$ are the two extremes of triaxiality, the strength and sign of $v_2^2-[p_{\mathrm{T}}]$ correlation can be used to provide valuable information on the triaxiality of the nucleus. In the hydrodynamic framework of heavy-ion collisions, elliptic flow, $v_2$, is sensitive to the quadrupole deformation, $\beta$, of the colliding ions. This enables one to test whether the established knowledge on the low-energy structure of nuclei is consistent with collider data from high-energy experiments. We derive a formula based on generic scaling laws of hydrodynamics to relate the difference in $v_2$ measured between collision systems that are close in size to the value of $\beta$ of the respective species. We validate our formula in simulations of 238U+238U and 197Au+197Au collisions at top Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) energy, and subsequently apply it to experimental data. Using the deformation of 238U from low-energy experiments, we find that RHIC $v_2$ data implies $0.16 \lesssim |\beta| \lesssim 0.20$ for 197Au nuclei, i.e., significantly more deformed than reported in the literature, posing an interesting puzzle in nuclear phenomenology., Comment: 6 pages and 4 figures, published version

A large anti-correlation signal between elliptic flow $v_2$ and average transverse momentum $[p_{\mathrm{T}}]$ was recently measured in small collision systems, consistent with a final-state hydrodynamic response to the initial geometry. This negative $v_2$-$[p_{\mathrm{T}}]$ correlation was predicted to change to positive correlation for events with very small charged particle multiplicity $N_{\mathrm{ch}}$ due to initial-state momentum anisotropies of the gluon saturation effects. However, the role of non-flow correlations is expected to be important in these systems, which is not yet studied. We estimate the non-flow effects in $pp$, $p$Pb and peripheral PbPb collisions using {\tt Pythia} and {\tt Hijing} models, and compare them with the experimental data. We show that the non-flow effects are largely suppressed using the rapidity-separated subevent cumulant method (details of the cumulant framework are also provided). The magnitude of the residual non-flow is much less than the experimental observation in the higher $N_{\mathrm{ch}}$ region, supporting the final-state response interpretation. In the very low $N_{\mathrm{ch}}$ region, however, the sign and magnitude of the residual non-flow depend on the model details. The centrality or the number of initial-state sources $V$ of the system produced in heavy ion collision is a concept that is not uniquely defined and subject to significant theoretical and experimental uncertainties. We argue that a more robust connection between the initial-state sources with final-state multiplicity could be established from the event-by-event multiplicity correlation between two subevents separated in pseudorapidity, $N_a$ vs $N_b$. This correlation is sensitive to two main types of centrality fluctuations (CF): 1) particle production for each source $p(n)$ which smears the relation between $V$ and $N_a$ used for experimental centrality, and 2) decorrelations between the sources in the two subevents $V_b$ and $V_a$. The CF is analyzed in terms of cumulants of $V_b$ and $N_b$ as a function of $N_a$, i.e. experimental centrality is defined with $N_a$. We found that the mean values $\langle V_b\rangle_{N_a}$ and $\langle N_b\rangle_{N_a}$ increase linearly with $N_a$ in mid-central collisions, but flatten out in ultra-central collisions. Such non-linear behavior is sensitive to the centrality resolution of $N_a$. In the presence of centrality decorrelations, the scaled variances $\langle(\delta V_b)^2\rangle/\langle V_b\rangle$ and $\langle(\delta N_b)^2\rangle/\langle N_b\rangle$ are found to decrease linearly with $N_a$ in mid-central collisions, while the $p(n)$ leads to another sharp decrease in the ultra-central region. The higher-order cumulants of $V_b$ and $N_b$ show interesting but rather complex behaviors which deserve further studies. Our results suggest that one can use the cumulants of the two-dimensional multiplicity correlation, especially the mean and variance, to constrain the particle production mechanism as well as the longitudinal fluctuations of the initial-state sources., Comment: 18 pages, 14 figures

The Multi-particle technique has been used to unravel the nature of the long-range collectivity in small collision systems. A large three-particle mixed-harmonic correlation signal was recently observed by the ATLAS Collaboration, but the role of non-flow correlations is not yet studied. We estimate the influence of non-flow correlations to the three-particle correlators in $pp$ and $p$+Pb collisions using PYTHIA and HIJING models, and compare with the ATLAS results. The large non-flow effects from the jet and dijet production is found to be largely suppressed in $p$+Pb collisions using the subevent cumulant method by calculating the azimuthal correlation between two or more longitudinal pseudorapidity ranges. Depending on the experimental subevent method, however, the non-flow effects may still be significant in $pp$ collisions.
