22. Impact of maize straw biochar and tied‐ridge‐furrow rainwater harvesting on soil erosion and soil quality in a semiarid region.

Abstract

In dryland areas, integrating biochar soil amendment with in situ rainwater harvesting systems may decrease soil erosion, improve soil quality, and increase crop productivity and yield. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of maize straw biochar amendment and ridge‐furrow rainwater harvesting systems on run‐off, sediment yield and the physico‐chemical properties of a Calcic Cambisol soil in semiarid areas. The experiment was conducted on alfalfa (Medicago sativa) production land at the Anjiagou Catchment experimental station in Gansu province, China. The experimental layout was a split‐plot design with three replications. Biochar was applied at a rate of 0 and 30 t ha−1, respectively. The tillage treatments were flat planting, open‐ridging, and tied‐ridging (TR). Overall, the integration of maize straw biochar with TR decreased soil bulk density at 0–40 cm depth. Biochar application reduced run‐off by 37.8% and soil loss by 55.5% during alfalfa‐growing seasons compared to the control. In general, biochar addition increased soil total potassium, but the same effect was not observed for soil pH, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and available phosphorus. These findings demonstrate the potential of integrating maize straw biochar and tillage systems to reduce soil erosion and improve soil quality for rainfed crop production in semiarid areas. Further studies on the effect of biochar‐tillage system interaction are warranted to improve soil conditions for plant growth and increase crop yield in dryland areas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In this paper, the 2219 aluminum alloy / T2 copper composite plate with good properties and almost no metallurgical defects was obtained by the explosive welding method. Meanwhile, its microstructure and mechanical properties were systematically studied. In terms of microstructure, two typical morphologies of local melting zone and vortex structure around the interface of the composite plate can be observed and both morphologies represented brittle-hard Al-Cu intermetallic compound regions. The interface of the composite plate mainly included Al2Cu and Al4Cu9 intermetallic compound layers. The Al4Cu9 layer had a typical {001} texture with the smaller grain size, the lower dislocation density and the lower energy. In terms of mechanical properties, the tensile strength of the composite plate reached 55% of the aluminum alloy cladding material and 70% of the copper substrate material, respectively. The composite plate fractured in the order of aluminum alloy, interface, copper and showed brittle fracture characteristics in the crack initiation region. The brittle-hard second phases in the aluminum alloy matrix were extremely unfavorable to the mechanical properties of the composite plate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The effects of element substitution and element doping on the magnetic properties and magnetocaloric effect of the LaFe11.5Si1.5 compound were investigated. The crystals of the LaFe11.5Si1.5, La0.8Nd0.2Fe11.5Si1.5, and LaFe11.5Si1.5C0.2 compounds all showed cubic NaZn13-type structures, but the lattice of the La0.8Nd0.2Fe11.5Si1.5 shrank and the lattice of the LaFe11.5Si1.5C0.2 expanded. All three compounds had the characteristic of first-order magnetic transition due to the obvious itinerant-electron metamagnetic (IEM) transition occurring above Curie temperature (TC). For the LaFe11.5Si1.5, La0.8Nd0.2Fe11.5Si1.5, and LaFe11.5Si1.5C0.2 compounds, the TC were approximately 194 K, 188 K, and 232 K, respectively. Meanwhile, the maximum magnetic entropy changes (−ΔSM) under a magnetic field change of 0–3 T were approximately 18.7 J/kg·K, 22.8 J/kg·K, and 16.4 J/kg·K, respectively. The TC was mainly affected by the lattice constant. Furthermore, the −ΔSM was mainly affected by the latent heat of the first-order magnetic transition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

40. Runoff and nutrient losses in alfalfa (Medicago sativaL) production with tied-ridge-furrow rainwater harvesting on sloping land

Abstract

Ridge-furrow rainwater harvesting (RFRH) is known to be effective in controlling water loss and soil erosion, and increasing soil moisture and crop yield in semiarid regions. However, it can cause waterlogging, ridge overtopping, and harvest failure if not properly designed. A four consecutive-year field trial was carried out to assess the impacts of various slope gradients and tillage practices on soil moisture, runoff, sediment yield, associated soil nutrient losses, fodder yield, and water use efficiency (WUE) of alfalfa in the Loess Plateau, China. The trial adopted a split-plot design, taking slope gradient (5° and 10°) as main plot treatment and tillage practice (traditional tillage, open-ridging, and tied-ridging) as split-plot treatment, from 2015 to 2018. There were greater variations in runoff, sediment yield, and associated soil nutrient losses than in fodder yield and WUE. Tied-ridging and open-ridging resulted in decreased runoff and reduced sediment transport and associated soil nutrient losses, and increased soil moisture, fodder yield, and WUE. Runoff, sediment transport, and associated soil nutrient losses inclined with increasing slope; while fodder yield and the WUE declined. For slopes of 5° and 10°, the average decrease in runoff, sediment yield, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and organic matter losses for open-ridging were 47.7–56.2%, 91.0–92.7%, 90.4–93.1%, 90.1–92.2%, and 88.9–90.2%, respectively, while these for tied-ridging were 62.4–68.4%, 94.5–96.4%, 93.6–95.5%, 93.9–95.9%, and 93.0–94.9%, over 4 years as compared with traditional tillage. The mean annual runoff, sediment, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and organic matter losses for slopes of 10° were 1.31, 1.96, 1.87, 1.99, and 1.64 times greater than the corresponding values for slopes of 5°, respectively. The increase of fodder yield and WUE for open-ridging and tied-ridging was 40.1–45.6% and 16.0–17.5%, and 3.66–5.99 and 1.35–2.50 kg ha−1mm−1, respectively, for slopes of 5° and 10°. The average fodder yield and WUE for slopes of 5° were 1.19 and 1.23 times greater than corresponding values for slopes of 10°, respectively. The disparities in fodder yield and WUE of alfalfa between slopes of 5° and 10° were not clear in dry years, but were evident in wet years. Tied-ridging was recommended for water and soil conservation, while open-ridging was recommended for increase of fodder yield and WUE of alfalfa. The implementation of RFRH in crop production should be evaluated by the use of a model in accordance with climatic conditions, soil type, and plant species.

Abstract

This article proposes an improved stitching algorithm based on grayscale to generate panorama. We adopted Moravec operator to extract the feature point and simplified the extraction and image fusion process to downsize the scale of calculation. Meanwhile, with the utilization of noise reduction, exposure processing and mismatch correction, the quality of the panorama and the robustness of the algorithm was well ensured. Tests show that this algorithm is practical for low-speed mobile terminals and it is considerably efficient and not sensitive about illumination condition or slight displacement during shooting.
