3. Effects of Zein Glycosylation Products on the Oxidation Stability of Docosahexaenoic acid Microcapsules

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the antioxidant capacity of glycosylated zein (glu-zein) as a wall material and improve the antioxidant properties of algal oil during storage. The storage stability of algal oil microencapsulated with glu-zein was analyzed and its shelf life was predicted. The optimal processing conditions that provided maximum anti-lipid peroxidation activity of glu-zein (72.31%) were obtained as 1:12, 30 min and 400 W for mass ratio of glucose to zein, reaction time and ultrasonic power, respectively. The anti-lipid peroxidation capacity, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity, reducing capacity, hydroxyl radical scavenging activity, and superoxide anion radical scavenging capacity of glu-zein were significantly increased over those of zein (P < 0.05). During accelerated storage, the peroxide value (POV) and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) value of algal oil microencapsulated with glu-zein were lower than those of free algal oil and algal oil microencapsulated with zein, with a decrease in POV by 3.68 and 39.14 mmol/kg being found after 18 days of storage at 60 ℃, respectively. At room temperature, the shelf life of algal oil microencapsulated with glu-zein was extended by 240 days when compared with that of free algae oil. At the end of the storage period, algal oil encapsulated by glu-zein had the highest retention rate of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) (96.95%). The results of this study provide a theoretical basis for expanding the application potential of modified zein as a wall material for the delivery of bioactive substances susceptible to oxygen.

4. Anisotropic-Isotropic Transition of Cages at the Glass Transition

Abstract

Characterizing the local structural evolution is an essential step in understanding the nature of glass transition. In this work, we probe the evolution of Voronoi cell geometry in simple glass models, and find that the individual particle cages deform anisotropically in supercooled liquid and isotropically in glass. We introduce an anisotropy parameter $k$ for each Voronoi cell, which mean value exhibits a sharp change at the mode-coupling glass transition $\phi_\mathrm{c}$. Moreover, a power law of packing fraction $\phi\propto q_1^{-d}$ is discovered in the liquid regime with $d>D$, in contrast to $d=D$ in the glass regime, where $q_1$ is the first peak position of structure factor, and $D$ is the space dimension. This power law is explained by the change of $k$. The active motions in supercooled liquid are spatially correlated with long axes rather than short axes of Voronoi cells. In addition, the dynamic slowing down approaching the glass transition can be well characterized through a modified free volume model based on $k$. These findings reveal that the nonagnostic structural parameter $k$ determines glassy dynamics and is effective in identifying the structure-dynamics correlations and the glass transition., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

26. Building and Using Personal Knowledge Graph to Improve Suicidal Ideation Detection on Social Media

Abstract

A large number of individuals are suffering from suicidal ideation in the world. There are a number of causes behind why an individual might suffer from suicidal ideation. As the most popular platform for self-expression, emotion release, and personal interaction, individuals may exhibit a number of symptoms of suicidal ideation on social media. Nevertheless, challenges from both data and knowledge aspects remain as obstacles, constraining the social media-based detection performance. Data implicitness and sparsity make it difficult to discover the inner true intentions of individuals based on their posts. Inspired by psychological studies, we build and unify a high-level suicide-oriented knowledge graph with deep neural networks for suicidal ideation detection on social media. We further design a two-layered attention mechanism to explicitly reason and establish key risk factors to individual's suicidal ideation. The performance study on microblog and Reddit shows that: 1) with the constructed personal knowledge graph, the social media-based suicidal ideation detection can achieve over 93% accuracy; and 2) among the six categories of personal factors, post, personality, and experience are the top-3 key indicators. Abstract

Being a link between a uniaxial nematic and a chiral nematic, the twist bend nematic (NTB) has been an intriguing topic for research over the last decade as a key to understanding chirality generation. Accurate description and understanding of resonance effects in helical structures provide crucial knowledge on the phase behavior beyond positional ordering. We examined the manifestation of resonance effects in NTBviatender resonant X-ray scattering (TReXS) at the sulfur K-edge. For the first time we demonstrate quantitatively that the energy dependence of the scattering peak in the NTBphase follows the energy dependence of the complex refractive indices measured by X-ray absorption. Taking advantage of molecular energy calculation, we decipher the distinct helical pitch variation trend for symmetric/asymmetric dimers from the perspective of hybridization and reveal the strong effect of substituting oxygen for sulfur atoms on the helical pitch and the thermal helix extension.

31. Latent Suicide Risk Detection on Microblog via Suicide-Oriented Word Embeddings and Layered Attention

Abstract

Despite detection of suicidal ideation on social media has made great progress in recent years, people's implicitly and anti-real contrarily expressed posts still remain as an obstacle, constraining the detectors to acquire higher satisfactory performance. Enlightened by the hidden "tree holes" phenomenon on microblog, where people at suicide risk tend to disclose their inner real feelings and thoughts to the microblog space whose authors have committed suicide, we explore the use of tree holes to enhance microblog-based suicide risk detection from the following two perspectives. (1) We build suicide-oriented word embeddings based on tree hole contents to strength the sensibility of suicide-related lexicons and context based on tree hole contents. (2) A two-layered attention mechanism is deployed to grasp intermittently changing points from individual's open blog streams, revealing one's inner emotional world more or less. Our experimental results show that with suicide-oriented word embeddings and attention, microblog-based suicide risk detection can achieve over 91\% accuracy. Abstract

BackgroundAberrant JAK/STAT activation has been detected in many types of human cancers. The role of JAK/STAT activation in cancer has been mostly attributed to direct transcriptional regulation of target genes by phosphorylated STAT (pSTAT), while the unphosphorylated STAT (uSTAT) is believed to be dormant and reside in the cytoplasm. However, several studies have shown that uSTATs can be found in the nucleus. In addition, it has been shown that tissue-specific loss of STAT3 or STAT5 in mice promotes cancer growth in certain tissues, and thus these STAT proteins can act as tumor suppressors. However, no unifying mechanism has been shown for the tumor suppressor function of STATs to date. We have previously demonstrated a non-canonical mode of JAK/STAT signaling for Drosophila STAT and human STAT5A, where a fraction of uSTAT is in the nucleus and associated with Heterochromatin Protein 1 (HP1); STAT activation (by phosphorylation) causes its dispersal, leading to HP1 delocalization and heterochromatin loss.MethodsWe used a combination of imaging, cell biological assays, and mouse xenografts to investigate the role of STAT3 in lung cancer development.ResultsWe found that uSTAT3 has a function in promoting heterochromatin formation in lung cancer cells, suppressing cell proliferation in vitro, and suppressing tumor growth in mouse xenografts.ConclusionsThus, uSTAT3 possesses noncanonical function in promoting heterochromatin formation, and the tumor suppressor function of STAT3 is likely attributable to the heterochromatin-promoting activity of uSTAT3 in the non-canonical JAK/STAT pathway.
