Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation technique is promising for high-mobility applications to achieve reliable communications. However, the capacity of OTFS systems is generally limited by the Nyquist criterion, requiring orthogonal pulses in both time and frequency domains. In this paper, we propose a novel multi-carrier faster-than-Nyquist (MC-FTN) signaling scheme for OTFS systems. By adopting non-orthogonal pulses in both time and frequency domains, our scheme significantly improves the capacity of OTFS systems. Specifically, we firstly develop the signal models for both single-input single-output (SISO) and multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) OTFS systems. Then, we optimize the delay-Doppler (DD) domain precoding matrix at the transmitter to suppress both the inter-symbol interference (ISI) and inter-carrier interference (ICI) introduced by the MC-FTN signaling. For SISO systems, we develop an eigenvalue decomposition (EVD) precoding scheme with optimal power allocation (PA) for achieving the maximum capacity. For MIMO systems, we develop a successive interference cancellation (SIC)-based precoding scheme via decomposing the capacity maximization problem into multiple sub-capacity maximization problems with largely reduced dimensions of optimization variables. Numerical results demonstrate that our proposed MC-FTN-OTFS signaling scheme achieves significantly higher capacity than traditional Nyquist-criterion-based OTFS systems. Asynchronous radio transceivers often lead to significant range and velocity ambiguity, posing challenges for precise positioning and velocity estimation in passive-sensing perceptive mobile networks (PMNs). However, their performance can be significantly affected by the specific choice of the utilized window functions. When applying integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) in future mobile networks, many sensing tasks have low latency requirements, preferably being implemented at terminals. However, terminals often have limited computing capabilities and energy supply. In this paper, we investigate the effectiveness of leveraging the advanced computing capabilities of mobile edge computing (MEC) servers and the cloud server to address the sensing tasks of ISAC terminals. Specifically, we propose a novel three-tier integrated sensing, communication, and computing (ISCC) framework composed of one cloud server, multiple MEC servers, and multiple terminals, where the terminals can optionally offload sensing data to the MEC server or the cloud server. The offload message is sent via the ISAC waveform, whose echo is used for sensing. We jointly optimize the computation offloading and beamforming strategies to minimize the average execution latency while satisfying sensing requirements. In particular, we propose a low-complexity distributed algorithm to solve the problem. Firstly, we use the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) and derive the closed-form solution for offloading decision variables. Subsequently, we convert the beamforming optimization sub-problem into a weighted minimum mean-square error (WMMSE) problem and propose a fractional programming based algorithm. In this work, we investigate sensing parameter estimation in the presence of clutter in perceptive mobile networks (PMNs) that integrate radar sensing into mobile communications. Performing clutter suppression before sensing parameter estimation is generally desirable as the number of sensing parameters can be signiffcantly reduced. However, existing methods require high-complexity clutter mitigation and sensing parameter estimation, where clutter is ffrstly identiffed and then removed. In this correspondence, we propose a much simpler but more effective method by incorporating a clutter cancellation mechanism in formulating a sparse signal model for sensing parameter estimation. In particular, clutter mitigation is performed directly on the received signals and the unitary approximate message passing (UAMP) is leveraged to exploit the common support for sensing parameter estimation in the formulated sparse signal recovery problem. Simulation results show that, compared to state-of-theart methods, the proposed method delivers signiffcantly better performance while with substantially reduced complexity.

Waveform design has served as a cornerstone for each generation of mobile communication systems. The future sixth-generation (6G) mobile communication networks are expected to employ larger-scale antenna arrays and exploit higher-frequency bands for further boosting data transmission rate and providing ubiquitous wireless sensing. This brings new opportunities and challenges for 6G waveform design. In this article, by leveraging the super spatial resolution of large antenna arrays and the multi-path spatial sparsity of highfrequency wireless channels, we introduce a new approach for waveform design based on the recently proposed delay-Doppler alignment modulation (DDAM). In particular, DDAM makes a paradigm shift of waveform design from the conventional manner of tolerating channel delay and Doppler spreads to actively manipulating them. First, we review the fundamental constraints and performance limitations of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and introduce new opportunities for 6G waveform design. Next, the motivations and basic principles of DDAM are presented, followed by its various extensions to different wireless system setups. Finally, the main design considerations for DDAM are discussed and the new opportunities for future research are highlighted.

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) is regarded as a promising technique for 6G communication network. In this letter, we investigate the Pareto bound of the ISAC system in terms of a unified Kullback-Leibler (KL) divergence performance metric. We firstly present the relationship between KL divergence and explicit ISAC performance metric, i.e., demodulation error and probability of detection. Thereafter, we investigate the impact of constellation and beamforming design on the Pareto bound via deep learning and semi-definite relaxation (SDR) techniques. This work deals with the problem of uplink communication and localization in an integrated sensing and communication system, where users are in the near field (NF) of antenna aperture due to the use of high carrier frequency and large antenna arrays at base stations. We formulate joint NF signal detection and localization as a problem of recovering signals with a sparse pattern. To solve the problem, we develop a message passing based sparse Bayesian learning (SBL) algorithm, where multiple unitary approximate message passing (UAMP)-based sparse signal estimators work jointly to recover the sparse signals with low complexity. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

This paper tackles the deployment challenges of Simultaneous Transmitting and Reflecting Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (STAR-RIS) in communication systems. Unlike existing works that use fixed deployment setups or solely optimize the location, this paper emphasizes the joint optimization of the location and orientation of STAR-RIS. This enables searching across all user grouping possibilities and fully boosting the system's performance. We consider a sum rate maximization problem with joint optimization and hybrid beamforming design. An offline heuristic solution is proposed for the problem, developed based on differential evolution and semi-definite programming methods. In particular, a point-point representation is proposed for characterizing and exploiting the user-grouping. A balanced grouping method is designed to achieve a desired user grouping with low complexity. Integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) has been visioned as a key technique for B5G/6G networks. To support monostatic sensing, a full-duplex radio is indispensable to extract echo signals from targets. Such a radio can also greatly improve network capacity via full-duplex communications. However, full-duplex radios in existing ISAC designs are mainly focused on wireless sensing, while the ability of full-duplex communications is usually ignored. In this article, we provide an overview of full-duplex ISAC (FD-ISAC), where a full-duplex radio is used for both wireless sensing and full-duplex communications in B5G/6G networks, with a focus on the fundamental interference management problem in such networks. First, different ISAC architectures are introduced, considering different full-duplex communication modes and wireless sensing modes. Next, the challenging issues of link-level interference and network-level interference are analyzed, illustrating a critical demand on interference management for FD-ISAC. Potential solutions to interference management are then reviewed from the perspective of radio architecture design, beamforming, mode selection, and resource allocation. Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) has been identified as a pillar usage scenario for the impending 6G era. Bi-static sensing, a major type of sensing in ISAC, is promising to expedite ISAC in the near future, as it requires minimal changes to the existing network infrastructure. However, a critical challenge for bi-static sensing is clock asynchronism due to the use of different clocks at far-separated transmitters and receivers. This causes the received signal to be affected by time-varying random phase offsets, severely degrading, or even failing, direct sensing. Hence, to effectively enable ISAC, considerable research has been directed toward addressing the clock asynchronism issue in bi-static sensing. This paper provides an overview of the issue and existing techniques developed in an ISAC background. Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) is regarded as the enabling technology in the future 5th-Generation-Advanced (5G-A) and 6th-Generation (6G) mobile communication system. ISAC waveform design is critical in ISAC system. However, the difference of the performance metrics between sensing and communication brings challenges for the ISAC waveform design. This paper applies the unified performance metrics in information theory, namely mutual information (MI), to measure the communication and sensing performance in multicarrier ISAC system. In multi-input multi-output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) ISAC system, we first derive the sensing and communication MI with subcarrier correlation and spatial correlation. Then, we propose optimal waveform designs for maximizing the sensing MI, communication MI and the weighted sum of sensing and communication MI, respectively. The optimization results are validated by Monte Carlo simulations. Our work provides effective closed-form expressions for waveform design, enabling the realization of MIMO-OFDM ISAC system with balanced performance in communication and sensing.

In the sixth generation (6G) era, intelligent machine network (IMN) applications, such as intelligent transportation, require collaborative machines with communication, sensing, and computation (CSC) capabilities. This article proposes an integrated communication, sensing, and computation (ICSAC) framework for 6G to achieve the reciprocity among CSC functions to enhance the reliability and latency of communication, accuracy and timeliness of sensing information acquisition, and privacy and security of computing to realize the IMN applications. Specifically, the sensing and communication functions can merge into unified platforms using the same transmit signals, and the acquired real-time sensing information can be exploited as prior information for intelligent algorithms to enhance the performance of communication networks. This is called the computing-empowered integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) reciprocity. Such reciprocity can further improve the performance of distributed computation with the assistance of networked sensing capability, which is named the sensing-empowered integrated communications and computation (ICAC) reciprocity. The above ISAC and ICAC reciprocities can enhance each other iteratively and finally lead to the ICSAC reciprocity. To achieve these reciprocities, we explore the potential enabling technologies for the ICSAC framework. In this paper, we investigate the realization of covert communication in a general radar-communication cooperation system, which includes integrated sensing and communications as a special example. We explore the possibility of utilizing the sensing ability of radar to track and jam the aerial adversary target attempting to detect the transmission. Based on the echoes from the target, the extended Kalman filtering technique is employed to predict its trajectory as well as the corresponding channels. Depending on the maneuvering altitude of adversary target, two channel state information (CSI) models are considered, with the aim of maximizing the covert transmission rate by jointly designing the radar waveform and communication transmit beamforming vector based on the constructed channels. For perfect CSI under the free-space propagation model, by decoupling the joint design, we propose an efficient algorithm to guarantee that the target cannot detect the transmission. For imperfect CSI due to the multi-path components, a robust joint transmission scheme is proposed based on the property of the Kullback-Leibler divergence. The convergence behaviour, tracking MSE, false alarm and missed detection probabilities, and covert transmission rate are evaluated. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithms achieve accurate tracking. In this paper, we propose a novel complex convolutional neural network (CNN) CSI enhancer for integrated sensing and communications (ISAC), which exploits the correlation between the sensing parameters (such as angle-of-arrival and range) and the channel state information (CSI) to significantly improve the CSI estimation accuracy and further enhance the sensing accuracy. Within the CNN CSI enhancer, we use the complex-valued computation layers to form the CNN, which maintains the phase information of CSI. We also transform the CSI into the sparse angle-delay domain, leading to heatmap images with prominent peaks that can be efficiently processed by CNN. Based on the enhanced CSI outputs, we further propose a novel biased fast Fourier transform (FFT)-based sensing scheme for improving the range sensing accuracy, by artificially introducing phase biasing terms. Extensive simulation results show that the ISAC complex CNN CSI enhancer can converge within 30 training epochs. The normalized mean square error (NMSE) of its CSI estimates is about 17 dB lower than that of the linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE) estimator, and the bit error rate (BER) of demodulation using the enhanced CSI estimation approaches that with perfect CSI. In this work, we study sensing-aided uplink transmission in an integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) vehicular network with the use of orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation. To exploit sensing parameters for improving uplink communications, the parameters must be first associated with the transmitters, which is a challenging task. We propose a scheme that jointly conducts parameter association, channel estimation and signal detection by formulating it as a constrained bilinear recovery problem. Then we develop a message passing algorithm to solve the problem, leveraging the bilinear unitary approximate message passing (Bi-UAMP) algorithm. Numerical results validate the proposed scheme, which show that relevant performance bounds can be closely approached.

Contact-free vital sign monitoring, which uses wireless signals for recognizing human vital signs (i.e, breath and heartbeat), is an attractive solution to health and security. However, the subject's body movement and the change in actual environments can result in inaccurate frequency estimation of heartbeat and respiratory. In this paper, we propose a robust mmWave radar and camera fusion system for monitoring vital signs, which can perform consistently well in dynamic scenarios, e.g., when some people move around the subject to be tracked, or a subject waves his/her arms and marches on the spot. Three major processing modules are developed in the system, to enable robust sensing. Firstly, we utilize a camera to assist a mmWave radar to accurately localize the subjects of interest. Secondly, we exploit the calculated subject position to form transmitting and receiving beamformers, which can improve the reflected power from the targets and weaken the impact of dynamic interference. Thirdly, we propose a weighted multi-channel Variational Mode Decomposition (WMC-VMD) algorithm to separate the weak vital sign signals from the dynamic ones due to subject's body movement. Experimental results show that, the 90${^{th}}$ percentile errors in respiration rate (RR) and heartbeat rate (HR) are less than 0.5 RPM (respirations per minute) and 6 BPM (beats per minute), respectively.

Integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) is an emerging critical technique for the next generation of communication systems. However, due to multiple performance metrics used for communication and sensing, the limited degrees-of-freedom (DoF) in optimizing ISAC systems poses a challenge. Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) can introduce new DoF for beamforming in ISAC systems, thereby enhancing the performance of communication and sensing simultaneously. In this paper, we propose two optimization techniques for beamforming in RIS-assisted ISAC systems. The first technique is an alternating optimization (AO) algorithm based on the semidefinite relaxation (SDR) method and a one-dimension iterative (ODI) algorithm, which can maximize the radar mutual information (MI) while imposing constraints on the communication rates. The second technique is an AO algorithm based on the Riemannian gradient (RG) method, which can maximize the weighted ISAC performance metrics. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed schemes. The AO-SDR-ODI method is shown to achieve better communication and sensing performance, than the AO-RG method, at a higher complexity. The air-ground integrated sensing and communications (AG-ISAC) network, which consists of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and ground terrestrial networks, offers unique capabilities and demands special design techniques. In this article, we provide a review on AG-ISAC, by introducing UAVs as ``relay'' nodes for both communications and sensing to resolve the power and computation constraints on UAVs. We first introduce an AG-ISAC framework, including the system architecture and protocol. Four potential use cases are then discussed, with the analysis on the characteristics and merits of AG-ISAC networks. The research on several critical techniques for AG-ISAC is then discussed. Joint radar and communications (JRC) can realize two radio frequency (RF) functions using one set of resources, greatly saving hardware, energy and spectrum for wireless systems needing both functions. Frequency-hopping (FH) MIMO radar is a popular candidate for JRC, as the achieved communication symbol rate can greatly exceed radar pulse repetition frequency. However, practical transceiver imperfections can fail many existing theoretical designs. In this work, we unveil for the first time the non-trivial impact of hardware imperfections on FH-MIMO JRC and analytically model the impact. We also design new waveforms and, accordingly, develop a low-complexity algorithm to jointly estimate the hardware imperfections of unsynchronized receiver. Moreover, employing low-cost software-defined radios and commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) products, we build the first FH-MIMO JRC experiment platform with radar and communications simultaneously validated over the air. Downlink (DL) and uplink (UL) joint communication and sensing (JCAS) technologies have been individually studied for realizing sensing using DL and UL communication signals, respectively. Since the spatial environment and JCAS channels in the consecutive DL and UL JCAS time slots are generally unchanged, DL and UL JCAS may be jointly designed to achieve better sensing performance. In this paper, we propose a novel DL and UL cooperative (DUC) JCAS scheme, including a unified multiple signal classification (MUSIC)-based JCAS sensing scheme for both DL and UL JCAS and a DUC JCAS fusion method. The unified MUSIC JCAS sensing scheme can accurately estimate AoA, range, and Doppler based on a unified MUSIC-based sensing module. The DUC JCAS fusion method can distinguish between the sensing results of the communication user and other dumb targets. Moreover, by exploiting the channel reciprocity, it can also improve the sensing and channel state information (CSI) estimation accuracy. Extensive simulation results validate the proposed DUC JCAS scheme. Joint communication and sensing (JCS) has become a promising technology for mobile networks because of its higher spectrum and energy efficiency. Up to now, the prevalent fast Fourier transform (FFT)-based sensing method for mobile JCS networks is on-grid based, and the grid interval determines the resolution. Because the mobile network usually has limited consecutive OFDM symbols in a downlink (DL) time slot, the sensing accuracy is restricted by the limited resolution, especially for velocity estimation. In this paper, we propose a multiple signal classification (MUSIC)-based JCS system that can achieve higher sensing accuracy for the angle of arrival, range, and velocity estimation, compared with the traditional FFT-based JCS method. We further propose a JCS channel state information (CSI) enhancement method by leveraging the JCS sensing results. Finally, we derive a theoretical lower bound for sensing mean square error (MSE) by using perturbation analysis. Simulation results show that in terms of the sensing MSE performance, the proposed MUSIC-based JCS outperforms the FFT-based one by more than 20 dB. Joint communication and sensing (JCAS) is a promising technology for 6th Generation (6G) mobile networks, such as intelligent vehicular networks, intelligent manufacturing, and so on. Equipped with two spatially separated antenna arrays, the base station (BS) can perform downlink active JCAS in a mono-static setup. This paper proposes a Concurrent Downlink and Uplink (CDU) JCAS system where the BS can use the echo of transmitted dedicated signals for sensing in the uplink timeslot, while performing reliable uplink communication. A novel successive interference cancellation-based CDU JCAS processing method is proposed to enable the estimation of uplink communication symbols and downlink sensing parameters. The joint communication and sensing (JCAS) technique has drawn great attention due to its high spectrum efficiency by using the same transmit signal for both communication and sensing. Exploiting the correlation between the uplink (UL) channel and the sensing results, we propose a sensing-aided Kalman filter (SAKF)-based channel state information (CSI) estimation method for UL JCAS, which exploits the angle-of-arrival (AoA) estimation to improve the CSI estimation accuracy. A Kalman filter (KF)-based CSI enhancement method is proposed to refine the least-square CSI estimation by exploiting the estimated AoA as the prior information. In this paper, we propose a novel Kalman Filter (KF)-based uplink (UL) joint communication and sensing (JCAS) scheme, which can significantly reduce the range and location estimation errors due to the clock asynchronism between the base station (BS) and user equipment (UE). Clock asynchronism causes time-varying time offset (TO) and carrier frequency offset (CFO), leading to major challenges in uplink sensing. Unlike existing technologies, our scheme does not require knowing the location of the UE in advance, and retains the linearity of the sensing parameter estimation problem. We first estimate the angle-of-arrivals (AoAs) of multipaths and use them to spatially filter the CSI. Then, we propose a KF-based CSI enhancer that exploits the estimation of Doppler with CFO as the prior information to significantly suppress the time-varying noise-like TO terms in spatially filtered CSIs. Uplink sensing in perceptive mobile networks (PMNs), which uses uplink communication signals for sensing the environment around a base station, faces challenging issues of clock asynchronism and the requirement of a line-of-sight (LOS) path between transmitters and receivers. The channel state information (CSI) ratio has been applied to resolve these issues, however, current research on the CSI ratio is limited to Doppler estimation in a single dynamic path. This paper proposes an advanced parameter estimation scheme that can extract multiple dynamic parameters, including Doppler frequency, angle-of-arrival (AoA), and delay, in a communication uplink channel and completes the localization of multiple moving targets. Our scheme is based on the multi-element Taylor series of the CSI ratio that converts a nonlinear function of sensing parameters to linear forms and enables the applications of traditional sensing algorithms. Using the truncated Taylor series, we develop novel multiple-signal-classification grid searching algorithms for estimating Doppler frequencies and AoAs and use the least-square method to obtain delays. Both experimental and simulation results are provided, demonstrating that our proposed scheme can achieve good performances for sensing both single and multiple dynamic paths, without requiring the presence of a LOS path.

Beamspace millimeter-wave (mmWave) and terahertz (THz) massive MIMO constitute attractive schemes for next-generation communications, given their abundant bandwidth and high throughput. However, their user and beam selection problem has to be efficiently addressed. Inspired by this challenge, we develop low-complexity solutions explicitly. We introduce the dirty paper coding (DPC) into the joint user and beam selection problem. We unveil the compelling properties of the DPC sum rate in beamspace massive MIMO, showing its monotonic evolution against the number of users and beams selected. We then exploit its beneficial properties for substantially simplifying the joint user and beam selection problem. Furthermore, we develop a set of algorithms striking unique trade-offs for solving the simplified problem, facilitating simultaneous user and beam selection based on partial beamspace channels for the first time. Additionally, we derive the sum rate bound of the algorithms and analyze their complexity. Joint communication and sensing (JCAS) has the potential to improve the overall energy, cost and frequency efficiency of IoT systems. As a first effort, we propose to optimize the MIMO-OFDM data symbols carried by sub-carriers for better time- and spatial-domain signal orthogonality. This not only boosts the availability of usable signals for JCAS, but also significantly facilitates Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices to perform high-quality sensing. We establish an optimization problem that modifies data symbols on sub-carriers to enhance the above-mentioned signal orthogonality. We also develop an efficient algorithm to solve the problem based on the majorization-minimization framework. Moreover, we discover unique signal structures and features from the newly modeled problem, which substantially reduce the complexity of majorizing the objective function. We also develop new projectors to enforce the feasibility of the obtained solution. Simulations show that, compared with the original communication waveform to achieve the same sensing performance, the optimized waveform can reduce the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) requirement by 3~4.5 dB, while the SNR loss for the uncoded bit error rate is only 1~1.5 dB., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures; submitted to an IEEE journal

Joint communications and sensing (JCAS) is potentially a hallmark technology for the sixth generation mobile network (6G). Most existing JCAS designs are based on digital arrays, analog arrays with tunable phase shifters, or hybrid arrays, which are effective but are generally complicated to design and power inefficient. This article introduces the energy-efficient and easy-to-design multi-beam antenna arrays (MBAAs) for JCAS. Using pre-designed and fixed analog devices, such as lens or Butler matrix, MBAA can simultaneously steer multiple beams yet with negligible power consumption compared with other techniques. Moreover, MBAAs enable flexible beam synthesis, accurate angle-of-arrival estimation, and easy handling/utilization of the beam squint effect. All these features have not been well captured by the JACS community yet. To promote the awareness of them, we intuitively illustrate them and also exploit them for constructing a multi-beam JCAS framework. We investigate the tamper-resistant property of Blockchain and its effectiveness for IoT systems. In particular, we implemented an IoT testbed, and built a Blockchain into the testbed. A number of tamper-resistance experiments were conducted and analyzed to corroborate the process of block validation in Blockchain. Our analysis and experimental results demonstrate the tamper-resistant capability of Blockchain in securing trust in IoT systems. Frequency-hopping (FH) joint radar-communications (JRC) can offer excellent security for integrated sensing and communication systems. However, existing JRC schemes mainly embed information using only the sub-pulse frequencies and hence the data rate is limited. In this paper, we propose to use both sub-pulse frequencies and durations for information modulation, leading to higher communication data rates. For information demodulation, we propose a novel scheme by using the time-frequency analysis (TFA) technique and a "you only look once" (YOLO)-based detection system. As such, our system does not require channel estimation, simplifying the transmission signal frame design. Clock asynchronism is a critical issue in integrating radar sensing into communication networks. It can cause ranging ambiguity and prevent coherent processing of dis-continuous measurements in integration with asynchronous transceivers. Should it be resolved, sensing can be efficiently realized in communication networks, requiring little network infrastructure and hardware changes. This article provides a systematic overview of existing and potential new techniques for tackling this fundamental problem. We first review existing solutions, including using a fine-tuned global reference clock, and single-node-based and network-based techniques. Advances in wireless communication and signal processing facilitate integrated sensing and communication a compelling technology that intrinsically combines sensing and communication functionalities for the dual purpose exploitation of wireless hardware resources and pursues mutual benefits. Consequently, the next generation communications network will be perceptive. In this article, we provide a review of human related sensing in the context of ISAC. We first present a general ISAC receiver signal processing framework, with a focus on human activity recognition. Based on its specific spatial deployments, we then categorize ISAC HAR into monostatic, bistatic, and distributed deployments, and discuss their properties, critical research problems and solutions. To facilitate the system's realization and improve its recognition performance, we then explore the inherent connections between the physical layer system parameters and HAR performance metrics. Experimental results are presented for characterizing the sensing potentials of different ISAC systems. Finally, we review the technical challenges and identify the open research problems.

Suppressing the deliberate interference for wireless networks is critical to guarantee a reliable communication link. However, nullifying the jamming signals can be problematic when the correlations between transmitted jamming signals are deliberately varied over time. Specifically, recent studies reveal that by deliberately varying the correlations among jamming signals, attackers can effectively vary the jamming channels and thus their nullspace, even when the physical channels remain unchanged. That makes the beam-forming matrix derived from the nullspace of the jamming channels unable to suppress the jamming signals. Most existing solutions only consider unchanged correlations or heuristically adapt to the time-varying correlation problem by continuously monitoring the residual jamming signals before updating the beam-forming matrix. In this paper, we systematically formulate the optimization problem of the nullspace estimation and data transmission phases. Even ignoring the unknown strategy of the jammers and the challenging nullspace estimation process, the resulting problem is an integer programming problem, hence intractable to obtain its optimal solution. To tackle it and address the unknown strategy of the jammer, we reformulate the problem using a partially observable semi-Markov decision process (POSMDP) and then design a deep dueling Q-learning based framework to tune the duration of the nullspace estimation and data transmission phases. Extensive simulations demonstrate that the proposed techniques effectively deal with jamming signals whose correlations vary over time, and the range of correlations is unknown. Especially, our techniques do not require continuous monitoring of the residual jamming signals (after the nullification process) before updating the beam-forming matrix. Effective wireless communications are increasingly important in maintaining the successful closed-loop operation of mission-critical industrial Internet-of-Things (IIoT) applications. To meet the ever-increasing demands on better wireless communications for IIoT, we propose an orthogonal time-frequency space (OTFS) waveform-based joint communication and radio sensing (JCAS) scheme -- an energy-efficient solution for not only reliable communications but also high-accuracy sensing. OTFS has been demonstrated to have higher reliability and energy efficiency than the currently popular IIoT communication waveforms. JCAS has also been highly recommended for IIoT, since it saves cost, power and spectrum compared to having two separate radio frequency systems. Performing JCAS based on OTFS, however, can be hindered by a lack of effective OTFS sensing. This paper is dedicated to filling this technology gap. We first design a series of echo pre-processing methods that successfully remove the impact of communication data symbols in the time-frequency domain, where major challenges, like inter-carrier and inter-symbol interference and noise amplification, are addressed. Then, we provide a comprehensive analysis of the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) for sensing and optimize a key parameter of the proposed method to maximize the SINR. Extensive simulations show that the proposed sensing method approaches the maximum likelihood estimator with respect to the estimation accuracy of target parameters and manifests applicability to wide ranges of key system parameters. Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS) is a revolutionizing approach to provide cost-effective yet energy-efficient communications. The transmit beamforming of the base station (BS) and discrete phase shifts of the RIS are jointly optimized to provide high quality of service. However, existing works ignore the high dependence between the large number of phase shifts and estimate them separately, consequently, easily getting trapped into local optima. To investigate the number and distribution of local optima, we conduct a fitness landscape analysis on the sum rate maximization problems. Two landscape features, the fitness distribution correlation and autocorrelation, are employed to investigate the ruggedness of landscape. The investigation results indicate that the landscape exhibits a rugged, multi-modal structure, i.e., has many local peaks, particularly in the cases with large-scale RISs. To handle the multi-modal landscape structure, we propose a novel niching genetic algorithm to solve the sum rate maximization problem. Particularly, a niching technique, nearest-better clustering, is incorporated to partition the population into several neighborhood species, thereby locating multiple local optima and enhance the global search ability. We also present a minimum species size to further improve the convergence speed. Simulation results demonstrate that our method achieves significant capacity gains compared to existing algorithms, particularly in the cases with large-scale RISs.

Device-free human tracking is an essential ingredient for ubiquitous wireless sensing. Recent passive WiFi tracking systems face the challenges of inaccurate separation of dynamic human components and time-consuming estimation of multi-dimensional signal parameters. In this work, we present a scheme named WiFi Doppler Frequency Shift (WiDFS), which can achieve single-target real-time passive tracking using channel state information (CSI) collected from commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) WiFi devices. We consider the typical system setup including a transmitter with a single antenna and a receiver with three antennas; while our scheme can be readily extended to another setup. To remove the impact of transceiver asynchronization, we first apply CSI cross-correlation between each RX antenna pair. We then combine them to estimate a Doppler frequency shift (DFS) in a short-time window. After that, we leverage the DFS estimate to separate dynamic human components from CSI self-correlation terms of each antenna, thereby separately calculating angle-of-arrival (AoA) and human reflection distance for tracking. In addition, a hardware calibration algorithm is presented to refine the spacing between RX antennas and eliminate the hardware-related phase differences between them. A prototype demonstrates that WiDFS can achieve real-time tracking with a median position error of 72.32 cm in multipath-rich environments.

Integrating sensing into standardized communication systems can potentially benefit many consumer applications that require both radio frequency functions. However, without an effective sensing method, such integration may not achieve the expected gains of cost and energy efficiency. Existing sensing methods, which use communication payload signals, either have limited sensing performance or suffer from high complexity. In this paper, we develop a novel and flexible sensing framework which has a complexity only dominated by a Fourier transform and also provides the flexibility in adapting for different sensing needs. We propose to segment a whole block of echo signal evenly into sub-blocks; adjacent ones are allowed to overlap. We design a virtual cyclic prefix (VCP) for each sub-block that allows us to employ two common ways of removing communication data symbols and generate two types of range-Doppler maps (RDMs) for sensing. We perform a comprehensive analysis of the signal components in the RDMs, proving that their interference-plus-noise (IN) terms are approximately Gaussian distributed. The statistical properties of the distributions are derived, which leads to the analytical comparisons between the two RDMs as well as between the prior and our sensing methods. Moreover, the impact of the lengths of sub-block, VCP and overlapping signal on sensing performance is analyzed. Criteria for designing these lengths for better sensing performance are also provided. Gridless methods show great superiority in line spectral estimation. These methods need to solve an atomic $l_0$ norm (i.e., the continuous analog of $l_0$ norm) minimization problem to estimate frequencies and model order. Since this problem is NP-hard to compute, relaxations of atomic $l_0$ norm, such as nuclear norm and reweighted atomic norm, have been employed for promoting sparsity. However, the relaxations give rise to a resolution limit, subsequently leading to biased model order and convergence error. To overcome the above shortcomings of relaxation, we propose a novel idea of simultaneously estimating the frequencies and model order by means of the atomic $l_0$ norm. To accomplish this idea, we build a multiobjective optimization model. The measurment error and the atomic $l_0$ norm are taken as the two optimization objectives. The proposed model directly exploits the model order via the atomic $l_0$ norm, thus breaking the resolution limit. We further design a variable-length evolutionary algorithm to solve the proposed model, which includes two innovations. One is a variable-length coding and search strategy. It flexibly codes and interactively searches diverse solutions with different model orders. These solutions act as steppingstones that help fully exploring the variable and open-ended frequency search space and provide extensive potentials towards the optima. Another innovation is a model order pruning mechanism, which heuristically prunes less contributive frequencies within the solutions, thus significantly enhancing convergence and diversity. The source number identification is an essential step in direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation. Existing methods may provide a wrong source number due to inferior statistical properties (in low SNR or limited snapshots) or modeling errors (caused by relaxing sparse penalties), especially in impulsive noise. To address this issue, we propose a novel idea of simultaneous source number identification and DOA estimation. We formulate a multiobjective off-grid DOA estimation model to realize this idea, by which the source number can be automatically identified together with DOA estimation. In particular, the source number is properly exploited by the $l_0$ norm of impinging signals without relaxations, guaranteeing accuracy. Furthermore, we design a multiobjective bilevel evolutionary algorithm to solve the proposed model. The source number identification and sparse recovery are simultaneously optimized at the on-grid (lower) level. A forward search strategy is developed to further refine the grid at the off-grid (upper) level. This strategy does not need linear approximations and can eliminate the off-grid gap with low computational complexity. OFDM sensing is gaining increasing popularity in wideband radar applications as well as in joint communication and radar/radio sensing (JCAS). As JCAS will potentially be integrated into future mobile networks where OFDM is crucial, OFDM sensing is envisioned to be ubiquitously deployed. A fast Fourier transform (FFT) based OFDM sensing (FOS) method was proposed a decade ago and has been regarded as a de facto standard given its simplicity. In this article, we introduce an easy trick -- a pre-processing on target echo -- to further reduce the computational complexity of FOS without degrading key sensing performance. Frequency estimation is a fundamental problem in many areas. The well-known A&M and its variant estimators have established an estimation framework by iteratively interpolating the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) coefficients. In general, those estimators require two DFT interpolations per iteration, have uneven initial estimation performance against frequencies, and are incompetent for small sample numbers due to low-order approximations involved. Exploiting the iterative estimation framework of A&M, we unprecedentedly introduce the Pad\'e approximation to frequency estimation, unveil some features about the updating function used for refining the estimation in each iteration, and develop a simple closed-form solution to solving the residual estimation error. Joint communication and radar sensing (JCR) represents an emerging research field aiming to integrate the above two functionalities into a single system, sharing a majority of hardware and signal processing modules and, in a typical case, sharing a single transmitted signal. It is recognised as a key approach in significantly improving spectrum efficiency, reducing device size, cost and power consumption, and improving performance thanks to potential close cooperation of the two functions. Advanced signal processing techniques are critical for making the integration efficient, from transmission signal design to receiver processing. Accurate channel parameter estimation is challenging for wideband millimeter-wave (mmWave) large-scale hybrid arrays, due to beam squint and much fewer radio frequency (RF) chains than antennas. This paper presents a novel joint delay and angle estimation approach for wideband mmWave fully-connected hybrid uniform cylindrical arrays. We first design a new hybrid beamformer to reduce the dimension of received signals on the horizontal plane by exploiting the convergence of the Bessel function, and to reduce the active beams in the vertical direction through preselection. The important recurrence relationship of the received signals needed for subspace-based angle and delay estimation is preserved, even with substantially fewer RF chains than antennas. Then, linear interpolation is generalized to reconstruct the received signals of the hybrid beamformer, so that the signals can be coherently combined across the whole band to suppress the beam squint. As a result, efficient subspace-based algorithm algorithms can be developed to estimate the angles and delays of multipath components. The estimated delays and angles are further matched and correctly associated with different paths in the presence of non-negligible noises, by putting forth perturbation operations. Wireless communications over fast fading channels are challenging, requiring either frequent channel tracking or complicated signaling schemes such as orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation. In this paper, we propose low-complexity frequency domain equalizations to combat fast fading, based on novel discrete delay-time and frequency-Doppler channel models. Exploiting the circular stripe diagonal nature of the frequency-Doppler channel matrix, we introduce low-complexity frequency domain minimum mean square error (MMSE) equalization for OTFS systems with fully resolvable Doppler spreads. We also demonstrate that the proposed MMSE equalization is applicable to conventional orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and single carrier frequency domain equalization (SC-FDE) systems with short signal frames and partially resolvable Doppler spreads. After generalizing the input-output data symbol relationship, we analyze the equalization performance via channel matrix eigenvalue decomposition and derive a closed-form expression for the theoretical bit-error-rate. Simulation results for OTFS, OFDM, and SC-FDE modulations verify that the proposed low-complexity frequency domain equalization methods can effectively exploit the time diversity over fast fading channels. Even with partially resolvable Doppler spread, the conventional SC-FDE can achieve performance close to OTFS, especially in fast fading channels with a dominating line-of-sight path.
