In the era of knowledge economy today, social development and progress are much more relying on HEIS (higher education institutions) than ever before. Besides, the three familiar missions of "training capable persons", "doing research" and "serving the society", in the tussle of knowledge race in East Asia, a new mission for HE (higher education) has been added, i.e., upgrading knowledge competitiveness. To attain this target, HEIs should aim at the innovation of HE, accumulation of knowledge capital, ability-building of human resources and blossom of boundless HE. (Contains 1 figure.)

The purpose of this experiment was to study the effects of diets with different concentrate-to-coarse ratios on the growth performance, rumen fermentation, nutrients apparent digestibility, and serum immune indexes of autumn lambs. Thirty 4-month-old F1 hybrid male lambs of 'Dubo x Small Tail Han sheep' were randomly divided into three groups, with 10 replicates in each group and one sheep in each replicate. Experimental Group I, Group II, and Group III were fed with diets with the ratio of concentrate to coarse of 40:60, 55:45, and 70:30, respectively. The results showed that the average daily gain of lambs in Group III was significantly higher than that in Group I (P<0.05), and the feed to gain ratio of Group II and Group III was significantly lower than that in Group I (P<0.05). The apparent digestibility of dry matter, organic matter, crude protein, and neutral detergent fiber in Group I was significantly lower than that in other groups (P<0.05), while the apparent digestibility of organic matter in Group II was significantly higher than that in Group III (P<0.05). The content of propionic acid in rumen of lambs in experimental group I was significantly lower than that in other groups (P<0.05), and the ratio of ethylene to propylene in experimental group I was significantly higher than that in other groups (P<0.05). The level of serum immunoglobulin G in Group II was significantly higher than that in Group III (P<0.05), and the level of serum interleukin-6 in Group II was significantly lower than that in other groups (P<0.05). The study indicates that when the concentrate-to-coarse ratio is 55:45, the growth of lambs in autumn can be healthier, the utilization rate of feed can be improved, the growth performance of lambs can be improved, and the economic benefits can be increased. The 1H NMR fingerprint of Eucommia ulmoides acquired with a CPMG pulse sequence was analyzed with the complete reduction to amplitude-frequency table (CRAFT) approach. The signals of target compounds were extracted without chemical separation and purification. Quantitative analysis showed that the average concentration of pinoresinol glucoside (PDG) in Eucommia ulmoides got from Guiyang medical plant garden was 0.275 6% with a relative standard deviation (RSD) of 1.69%. The results were consistent with those obtained by high performance liquid chromatography (average content of 0.269 6% and RSD of 0.65%). NMR fingerprint and multivariate statistical analysis also revealed that there existed significant differences between Hunan and Guizhou Eucommia ulmoides Oliver.

Based on the Daoist/Taoist model of water-like (or wateristic) personality features (Lee, 2003, 2004), four hypotheses were derived with a focus on altruism and modesty. A total of 122 Chinese college students and 106 American college students participated in this cross-cultural study. It was found (1) that American college students were more altruistic than Chinese counterparts; (2) that levels of modesty were more trait-specific than culture-specific; and (3) that Chinese participants were more altruistic and receptive toward outgroup members or outsiders (e.g., aliens) than American counterparts in uncertain situations. Theoretical implications are also discussed.

Clinical studies have shown that large doses of prednisone could lower serum uric acid (SUA) in patients with decompensated heart failure (HF); however, the optimal dose of prednisone and underlying mechanisms are unknown. Thirty-eight patients with decompensated HF were randomized to receive standard HF care alone (n = 10) or with low-dose (15 mg/day, n = 8), medium-dose (30 mg/day, n = 10), or high-dose prednisone (60 mg/day, n = 10), for 10 days. At the end of the study, only high-dose prednisone significantly reduced SUA, whereas low- and medium-dose prednisone and standard HF care had no effect on SUA. The reduction in SUA in high-dose prednisone groups was associated with a significant increase in renal uric acid clearance. In conclusion, prednisone can reduce SUA levels by increasing renal uric acid clearance in patients with decompensated HF. Key words: heart failure, uric acid, prednisone, renal uric acid clearance. Toutefois, la dose optimale de prednisone et les mecanismes sous-jacents demeurent inconnus. Trente-huit patients atteints d'IC decompensee ont ete repartis aleatoirement pour recevoir la norme de soins standard seule (n = 10) ou de la prednisone a dose faible (a 15 mg/jour, n = 8), moderee (a 30 mg/jour, n = 10) ou elevee (a 60 mg/jour, n = 10) pendant 10 jours. A la fin de l'etude, seule la dose elevee de prednisone avait permis d'abaisser les taux d'AUS de facon notable, alors que ni les doses faible et moderee de prednisone ni la norme de soins standard pour l'IC n'ont eu d'effets sur les taux d'AUS. En fait, l'abaissement des taux d'AUS par la prednisone a dose elevee etait associe a une augmentation importante de la clairance renale de l'acide urique. En conclusion, la prednisone pourrait abaisser les taux d'AUS en augmentant la clairance renale de l'acide urique chez les patients atteints d'IC decompensee. The present study is aimed at examining implicit and explicit attitudes toward persons with disabilities among Chinese college students. The "Implicit Association Test" was used to measure their implicit attitudes, whereas their explicit attitudes toward persons with disabilities were measured by using a scale of three items. Participants were 56 randomly recruited undergraduate students at a university in Beijing. The results showed that implicit and explicit attitudes were antagonistic to each other. Students tended to hold negative attitudes implicitly and positive attitudes explicitly toward persons with disabilities. In particular, students from rural areas exhibited more negative implicit attitudes than those from urban areas; males demonstrated more negative explicit attitudes than females. Implications for rehabilitation counselors are discussed. (Contains 1 table and 1 figure.)
