A uniform one-unit-cell-high step on the SrTiO3 substrate is a prerequisite for growing high-quality epitaxial oxide heterostructures. However, it is inevitable that defects induced by mixed substrate surface termination exist at the interface, significantly impacting the properties of ultrathin films. In this study, we microscopically identify the origin for the lateral inhomogeneity in the growth of ultrathin SrRuO3 films due to the step effects of SrTiO3(001). By using atomic-resolved scanning transmission electron microscopy, we observe two distinct types of step propagation along the [011] and [0-11]crystallographic direction in SrTiO3-SrRuO3 heterostructures, respectively. In particular, the type-II [0-11] step results in lateral discontinuity of monolayer SrRuO3 and originates from the SrO-terminated regions along the TiO2-terminated step edge. Such an induced lateral discontinuity should be responsible for the distinct electronic and magnetic properties of monolayer SrRuO3. The interplay among symmetry of lattices, electronic correlations, and Berry phase of the Bloch states in solids has led to fascinating quantum phases of matter. A prototypical system is the magnetic Weyl candidate SrRuO3, where designing and creating electronic and topological properties on artificial lattice geometry is highly demanded yet remains elusive. Here, we establish an emergent trigonal structure of SrRuO3 by means of heteroepitaxial strain engineering along the [111] crystallographic axis. Distinctive from bulk, the trigonal SrRuO3 exhibits a peculiar XY-type ferromagnetic ground state, with the coexistence of high-mobility holes likely from linear Weyl bands and low-mobility electrons from normal quadratic bands as carriers. The presence of Weyl nodes are further corroborated by capturing intrinsic anomalous Hall effect, acting as momentum-space sources of Berry curvatures. The experimental observations are consistent with our first-principles calculations, shedding light on the detailed band topology of trigonal SrRuO3 with multiple pairs of Weyl nodes near the Fermi level. Our findings signify the essence of magnetism and Berry phase manipulation via lattice design and pave the way towards unveiling nontrivial correlated topological phenomena.

The electronic and magnetic properties in ABO3 perovskite oxides are extremely sensitive to lattice structure but also the dimensionality, such as the thickness in thin film form. Here, we report the thickness-dependent electro-magnetic properties of ultrathin epitaxially stabilized Sr1-xBaxRuO3 (x = 0.08, 0.2) thin films on SrTiO3 (001) substrate. The results reveal that the Ba-doping (0.08 < x < 0.20) reduces RuO6 orthorhombic distortions existing in SrRuO3 and induces a tetragonal distortion as evidenced by out-of-plane lattice expansion. A metal-to-insulator transition, accompanied by a ferromagnetic to non-magnetic transition occurs with reducing film thickness from 10 to 3 unit-cell (u.c.) for both x = 0.08 and 0.2, regardless of the doping level. The results suggest that the effects of compositional vacancies and surface/interface contributions introduced via dimensional confinement are more dominant than A-site chemical disorder or structural distortion for the loss of metallicity and ferromagnetism in ultra-thin epitaxial films.

The perovskite ruthenates (ARuO3, A = Ca, Ba, or Sr) exhibit unique properties owing to a subtle interplay of crystal structure and electronic-spin degrees of freedom. Here, we demonstrate an intriguing continuous tuning of crystal symmetry from orthorhombic to tetragonal (no octahedral rotations) phases in epitaxial SrRuO3 achieved via Ba-substitution (Sr1-xBaxRuO3 with 0 < x < 0.7). An initial Ba-substitution to SrRuO3 not only changes the ferromagnetic properties, but also tunes the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy via flattening the Ru-O-Ru bond angle (to 180{\deg}), resulting in the maximum Curie temperature and an extinction of RuO6 rotational distortions at x = 0.20. For x > 0.2, the suppression of RuO6 octahedral rotational distortion dominantly enhances the ferromagnetism in the system, though competing with the impact of the RuO6 tetragonal distortion. Further increasing x > 0.2 gradually enhances the tetragonal-type distortion, resulting in the tuning of Ru-4d orbital occupancy and suppression of ferromagnetism. Our results demonstrate that isovalent substitution of the A-site cations significantly and controllably impacts both electronic and magnetic properties of perovskite oxides.

1T-TiSe2 is one of the most studied charge density wave (CDW) systems, not only because of its peculiar properties related to the CDW transition, but also due to its status as a promising candidate of exciton insulator signaled by the proposed plasmon softening at the CDW wave vector. Using high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy, we report a systematic study of the temperature-dependent plasmon behaviors of 1T-TiSe2. We unambiguously resolve the plasmon from phonon modes, revealing the existence of Landau damping to the plasmon at finite momentums, which does not support the plasmon softening picture for exciton condensation. Moreover, we discover that the plasmon lifetime at zero momentum responds dramatically to the bandgap evolution associated with the CDW transition. The interband transitions near the Fermi energy in the normal phase is demonstrated serving as a strong damping channel of plasmons, while such a channel in the CDW phase is suppressed due to the CDW gap opening, which results in the dramatic tunability of the plasmon in semimetals or small-gap semiconductors.

The electro-magnetic properties of ultrathin epitaxial ruthenate films have long been the subject of debate. Here we combine experimental with theoretical investigations of (SrTiO3)5-(SrRuO3)n-(SrTiO3)5 (STO5-SROn-STO5) heterostructures with n = 1 and 2 unit cells, including extensive atomic-resolution scanning-transmission-electron-microscopy imaging, electron-energy-loss-spectroscopy chemical mapping, as well as transport and magneto-transport measurements. The experimental data demonstrate that the STO5-SRO2-STO5 heterostructure is stoichiometric, metallic, and ferromagnetic with TC ~ 128 K, even though it lacks the characteristic bulk-SRO octahedral tilts and matches the cubic STO structure. In contrast, the STO5-SRO1-STO5 heterostructure features Ru-Ti intermixing in the RuO2 layer, also without octahedral tilts, but is accompanied by a loss of metallicity and ferromagnetism. Density-functional-theory calculations show that stoichiometric n = 1 and n = 2 heterostructures are metallic and ferromagnetic with no octahedral tilts, while non-stoichiometry in the Ru sublattice in the n = 1 case opens an energy gap and induces antiferromagnetic ordering. Thus, the results indicate that the observed non-stoichiometry is the cause of the observed loss of metallicity and ferromagnetism in the n = 1 case., Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures

Lattice structure can dictate electronic and magnetic properties of a material. Especially, reconstruction at a surface or heterointerface can create properties that are fundamentally different from those of the corresponding bulk material. We have investigated the lattice structure on the surface and in the thin films of epitaxial SrRuO3 with the film thickness up to 22 pseudo-cubic unit cells (u.c.), using the combination of surface sensitive low energy electron diffraction and bulk sensitive scanning transmission electron microscopy. Our analysis indicates that, in contrast to many perovskite oxides, the RuO6 tilt and rotational distortions appear even in single unit cell SrRuO3 thin films on cubic SrTiO3, while the full relaxation to the bulk-like orthorhombic structure takes 3-4 u.c. from the interface for thicker films. Yet the TiO6 octahedra of the substrate near the interface with SrRuO3 films show no sign of distortion, unlike those near the interface with CaRuO3 films. Two orthogonal in-plane rotated structural domains are identified. Complex oxide interfaces have been one of the central focuses in condensed matter physics and material science. Over the past decade, aberration corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy and spectroscopy has proven to be invaluable to visualize and understand the emerging quantum phenomena at an interface. In this paper, we briefly review some recent progress in the utilization of electron microscopy to probe interfaces. Specifically, we discuss several important challenges for electron microscopy to advance our understanding on interface phenomena, from the perspective of variable temperature, magnetism, electron energy loss spectroscopy analysis, electronic symmetry, and defects probing., Comment: 45 pages, 7 figures

Metallic oxide SrVO3 represents a prototype system for the study of the mechanism behind thickness-induced metal-to-insulator transition (MIT) or crossover in thin films due to its simple cubic symmetry with one electron in the 3d state in the bulk. Here we report a deviation of chemical composition and distortion of lattice structure existing in the initial 3 unit cells of SrVO3 films grown on SrTiO3 (001) from its bulk form, which shows a direct correlation to the thickness-dependent MIT. In-situ photoemission and scanning tunneling spectroscopy indicate a MIT at the critical thickness of ~3 unit cell (u.c.), which coincides with the formation of a (root2Xroot2)R45 surface reconstruction. However, atomically resolved scanning transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy show depletion of Sr, change of V valence, thus implying the existence of a significant amount of oxygen vacancies in the 3 u.c. of SrVO3 near the interface. Transport and magneto-transport measurements further reveal that disorder, rather than electron correlations, is likely to be the main cause for the MIT in the SrVO3 ultrathin films.

Understanding and manipulating properties emerging at a surface or an interface require a thorough knowledge of structure-property relationships. We report a study of a prototype oxide system, La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 grown on SrTiO3(001), by combining in-situ angle-resolved x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, ex-situ x-ray diffraction, and scanning transmission electron microscopy/spectroscopy with electric transport measurements. We find that La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 films thicker than 20 unit cells (u.c.) exhibit a universal behavior with no more than one u.c. intermixing at the interface but at least 3 u.c. of Sr segregation near the surface which is (La/Sr)O terminated. The conductivity vs film thickness shows the existence of nonmetallic layers with thickness ~ 6.5 +/- 0.9 u.c., which is independent of film thickness but mainly relates to the deviation of Sr concentration near the surface region. Below 20 u.c., the surface of the films appears mixed (La/Sr)O with MnO2 termination. Decreasing film thickness to less than 10 u.c. leads to the enhanced deviation of chemical composition in the films and eventually drives the film insulating. The dimensionality of the electronic and magnetic structure of a given material is generally predetermined by its crystal structure. Here, using elastic and inelastic neutron scattering combined with magnetization measurements, we find unusual magnetic behavior in three-dimensional (3D) Ba2CoO4. In spite of isolated CoO4 tetrahedra, the system exhibits a 3D noncollinear antiferromagnetic order in the ground state with an anomalously large Curie-Weiss temperature of 110 K compared to TN = 26 K. More unexpectedly, spin dynamics displays quasi-2D spin wave dispersion with an unusually large spin gap, and 1D magnetoelastic coupling. Our results indicate that Ba2CoO4 is a unique system for exploring the interplay between isolated polyhedra, low-dimensional magnetism, and novel spin states in oxides., Comment: to be published in Physical Review B

The observation of substantially enhanced superconductivity of single-layer FeSe films on SrTiO3 has stimulated intensive research interest. At present, conclusive experimental data on the corresponding electron-boson interaction is still missing. Here we use inelastic electron scattering spectroscopy and angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy to show that the electrons in these systems are dressed by the strongly polarized lattice distortions of the SrTiO3, and the indispensable non-adiabatic nature of such a coupling leads to the formation of dynamic interfacial polarons. Furthermore, the collective motion of the polarons results in a polaronic plasmon mode, which is unambiguously correlated with the surface phonons of SrTiO3 in the presence of the FeSe films. A microscopic model is developed showing that the interfacial polaron-polaron interaction leads to the superconductivity enhancement., Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures

We report on a combined scanning tunneling microscopy and density functional theory calculation study of the SrTiO3(110)-(4 x 1) surface. It is found that antiphase domains are formed along the [1-10]-oriented stripes on the surface. The domain boundaries are decorated by defects pairs consisting of Ti2O3 vacancies and Sr adatoms, which relieve the residual stress. The formation energy of, and interactions between, vacancies result in a defect superstructure. It is suggested that the density and distributions of defects can be tuned by strain engineering, providing a fexible platform for the designed growth of complex oxide materials.

Charge transfer and electron-phonon coupling (EPC) are proposed to be two important constituents associated with enhanced superconductivity in the single unit cell FeSe films on oxide surfaces. Using high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy combined with first-principles calculations, we have explored the lattice dynamics of ultrathin FeSe films grown on SrTiO3. We show that, despite the significant effect from the substrate on the electronic structure and superconductivity of the system, the FeSe phonons in the films are unaffected. The energy dispersion and linewidth associated with the Fe- and Se-derived vibrational modes are thickness- and temperature-independent. Theoretical calculations indicate the crucial role of antiferromagnetic correlation in FeSe to reproduce the experimental phonon dispersion. Importantly, the only detectable change due to the growth of FeSe films is the broadening of the Fuchs-Kliewer (F-K) phonons associated with the lattice vibrations of SrTiO$_3$(001) substrate. If EPC plays any role in the enhancement of film superconductivity, it must be the interfacial coupling between the electrons in FeSe film and the F-K phonons from substrate rather than the phonons of FeSe., Comment: 13 gages, 8 figures

Bilayered Sr3Ru2O7 is an unusual metamagnetic metal with inherently antiferromagnetic (AFM) and ferromagnetic (FM) fluctuations. Partial substitution of Ru by Mn results in the establishment of metal-insulator transition (MIT) at TMIT and AFM ordering at TM in Sr3(Ru1-xMnx)2O7. Using elastic neutron scattering we determined the effect of Mn doping on the magnetic structure and in-plane magnetic correlation lengths in Sr3(Ru1-xMnx)2O7 (x = 0.06 and 0.12). With increasing Mn doping (x) from 0.06 to 0.12 or decreasing temperatures for x=0.12, an evolution from an in-plane short-range to long-range double-stripe AFM ground state occurs. For both compounds, the onset of magnetic correlation with an anisotropic behavior coincides with the sharp rise of the electrical resistivity and the specific heat. Since it does not induce measurable lattice distortion, the double-stripe magnetic order with anisotropic spin texture breaks the symmetry from C4v crystal lattice to C2v magnetic sublattice. Plasmons, the collective excitations of electrons in the bulk or at the surface, play an important role in the properties of materials, and have generated the field of Plasmonics. We report the observation of a highly unusual acoustic plasmon mode on the surface of a three-dimensional topological insulator (TI), Bi2Se3, using momentum resolved inelastic electron scattering. In sharp contrast to ordinary plasmon modes, this mode exhibits almost linear dispersion into the second Brillouin zone and remains prominent with remarkably weak damping not seen in any other systems. This behavior must be associated with the inherent robustness of the electrons in the TI surface state, so that not only the surface Dirac states but also their collective excitations are topologically protected. On the other hand, this mode has much smaller energy dispersion than expected from a continuous media excitation picture, which can be attributed to the strong coupling with surface phonons.

The coupling between the electrical transport properties of La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 (LSMO) thin films and structural phase transitions of SrTiO3 (STO) substrates at Ts = 105 K has been investigated. We found that the electrical resistivity of LSMO films exhibit a cusp at Ts, which is greatly amplified by tuning films to the verge of metallic and insulating phases, i.e., to the boundary of two delicate competing electronic states. Our results demonstrate that small amounts of strain can tip the subtle balance of competing interactions and tune the electronic properties in correlated electron materials., Comment: Accepted by Phys. Heteroepitaxial growth of transition-metal oxide films on the open (111) surface of SrTiO3 results in significant restructuring due to the polar mismatch. Monitoring the structural and composition on an atomic scale of LaNiO3/SrTiO3 (111) interface as a function of processing conditions has enabled the avoidance of the expected polar catastrophe. Using atomically resolved transmission electron microscopy and spectroscopy as well as Low energy electron diffraction, the structure of the thin film, from interface to the surface, has been studied. In this paper, we show that the proper processing can lead to a structure that is ordered, coherent with the substrate without intermediate structural phase. Angle-resolved X-ray photoemission spectroscopy shows that the oxygen content of thin films increases with the film thickness, indicating that the polar mismatch is avoided by the presence of oxygen vacancies.

An unusual Fe-H bonding rather than conventional OH bonding is identified at Fe3O4 (001) surface. This abnormal behavior is associated with the oxygen vacancies which exist on the surface region but also penetrate deep into the bulk Fe3O4. In contrast, OH bonding becomes preferential as generally expected on an ozone processed surface, which has appreciably less oxygen vacancies. Such bonding site selective behavior, depending on oxygen vacancy concentrations, is further confirmed with DFT calculations. The results demonstrate an opportunity for tuning the chemical properties of oxide surfaces or oxide clusters.

Double-layered Sr3Ru2O7 has received phenomenal consideration because it exhibits a plethora of exotic phases when perturbed. New phases emerge with the application of pressure, magnetic field, or doping. Here we show that creating a surface is an alternative and effective way to reveal hidden phases that are different from those seen in the bulk by investigating the surface properties of Sr3(Ru1-xMnx)2O7. Driven by the tilt distortion of RuO6 octahedra, the surface of Sr3Ru2O7 is less metallic than the bulk. In contrast, because of the vanishing of tilt and enhanced rotation with Mn-doping, the surface of Sr3(Ru0.84Mn0.16)2O7 is metallic while the bulk is insulating. Our result demonstrates that the electronic and structural properties at the surface are intimately coupled and consistent with quasi two-dimensional character.

Ever since the discovery of high-Tc superconductivity in layered cuprates, the roles that individual layers play have been debated, due to difficulty in layer-by-layer characterization. While there is similar challenge in many Fe-based layered superconductors, the newly-discovered Ca10(Pt4As8)(Fe2As2)5 provides opportunities to explore superconductivity layer by layer, because it contains both superconducting building blocks (Fe2As2 layers) and intermediate Pt4As8 layers. Cleaving a single crystal under ultra-high vacuum results in multiple terminations: an ordered Pt4As8 layer, two reconstructed Ca layers on the top of a Pt4As8 layer, and disordered Ca layer on the top of Fe2As2 layer. The electronic properties of individual layers are studied using scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/S), which reveals different spectra for each surface. Remarkably superconducting coherence peaks are seen only on the ordered Ca/Pt4As8 layer. Our results indicate that an ordered structure with proper charge balance is required in order to preserve superconductivity.

The significant role of interfacial coupling on the superconductivity enhancement in FeSe films on SrTiO3 has been widely recognized. But the explicit origination of this coupling is yet to be identified. Here by surface phonon measurements using high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy, we found electric field generated by Fuchs-Kliewer (F-K) phonon modes of SrTiO3 can penetrate into FeSe films and strongly interact with electrons therein. The mode-specific electron-phonon coupling (EPC) constant for the ~92 meV F-K phonon is ~0.25 in the single-layer FeSe on SrTiO3. With increasing FeSe thickness, the penetrating field intensity decays exponentially, which matches well the observed exponential decay of the superconducting gap. It is unambiguously shown that the SrTiO3 F-K phonon penetrating into FeSe is essential in the interfacial superconductivity enhancement., Comment: Main text: 6 pages, 3 figures; Supplementary Material: 8 pages, 6 figures. We have systematically investigated the annealing effect on the structure and composition of the polar surface of SrTiO3 (111), starting with an ex-situ chemical etch. The relative surface concentration between Ti and Sr strongly depends on both the annealing temperature and the oxygen processing. There is a critical annealing temperature at which the maximum concentration ratio of Ti to Sr is achieved, while still maintaining a (1 x 1) surface structure. We demonstrate that with proper processing it is possible to avoid surface reconstruction over a broad temperature range. The concept of a Charge Density Wave (CDW) permeates much of condensed matter physics and chemistry. Conceptually, CDWs have their origin rooted in the instability of a one-dimensional system described by Peierls. The extension of this concept to reduced dimensional systems has led to the concept of Fermi surface nesting (FSN), which dictates the wave vector q_cdw of the CDW and the corresponding lattice distortion. The idea is that segments of the Fermi contours are connected by q_cdw, resulting in the effective screening of phonons inducing Kohn Anomalies in their dispersion at q_cdw, driving a lattice restructuring at low temperatures. There is growing theoretical and experimental evidence that this picture fails in many real systems and in fact it is the momentum dependence of the electron-phonon coupling (EPC) matrix element that determines the characteristic of CDW phase (q_cdw). Here, based on the published results for the prototypical CDW system 2H-NbSe2, we show how well the q-dependent EPC matrix element, but not the FSN, can describe the origin of CDW. We further demonstrate a procedure of combing electronic band and phonon (dispersion and linewidth) measurements to extract the EPC matrix element, allowing the electronic states involved in the EPC to be identified. Thus we show that a large EPC does not necessarily induce the CDW phase, with Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 (Bi2212) as the example, and the charge ordered phenomena observed in various cuprates are not driven by FSN or EPC. To experimentally resolve the microscopic picture of EPC will lead to a fundamental change in the way we think about, write about, and classify Charge Density Waves.

High-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) measurements on BaFe2As2-one of the parent compounds of the iron-based superconductors-reveals a (1x1) As-terminated unit cell on the (001) surface. However, there are significant differences of the surface unit cell compared to the bulk: only one of the two As atoms in the unit cell is imaged and domain walls between different (1x1) regions display a C2 symmetry at the surface. It should have been C2v if the STM image reflected the geometric structure of the surface or the orthorhombic bulk. The inequivalent As atoms and the bias dependence of the domain walls indicate that the origin of the STM image is primarily electronic not geometric. We argue that the surface electronic topography mirrors the bulk spin structure of BaFe2As2, via strong orbital-spin coupling.

High-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy measurements have been carried out on an optimally doped cuprate Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+{\delta}. The momentum-dependent linewidth and the dispersion of an A1 optical phonon are obtained. Based on these data as well as the detailed knowledge of the electronic structure from angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we develop a scheme to determine the full structure of electron-phonon coupling for a specific phonon mode, thus providing a general method for directly resolving the EPC matrix element in systems with anisotropic electronic structures.

Core-level spectra of the Mn-doped Sr3Ru2O7 and Srn+1RunO3n+1 (n = 1, 2 and 3) crystals are investigated with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Doping of Mn to Sr3Ru2O7 considerably affects the distribution of core-level spectral weight. The satellite of Ru 3d core levels exhibits a substantial change with doping, indicating an enhanced electron localization across the doping- induced metal-insulator transition. However, the Ru 3p core levels remain identical with Mn-doping, thus showing no sign of doping-induced multiple Ru valences. In the Srn+1RunO3n+1 (n = 1, 2 and 3), the Ru 3d core-level spectra are similar, indicating that the chemical bonding environment around Ru ions remains the same for different layered compounds. Meanwhile the Sr 3d shallow core levels shift to higher binding energy with increasing n, suggesting their participation in Sr-O bonding with structural evolution., Comment: 6 pages with 6 figures, to be published in PRB

BaFe2As2 exhibits properties characteristic of the parent compounds of the newly discovered iron (Fe)-based high-TC superconductors. By combining the real space imaging of scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/S) with momentum space quantitative Low Energy Electron Diffraction (LEED) we have identified the surface plane of cleaved BaFe2As2 crystals as the As terminated Fe-As layer - the plane where superconductivity occurs. LEED and STM/S data on the BaFe2As2(001) surface indicate an ordered arsenic (As) - terminated metallic surface without reconstruction or lattice distortion. It is surprising that the STM images the different Fe-As orbitals associated with the orthorhombic structure, not the As atoms in the surface plane., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

Inelastic neutron scattering is used to measure the temperature dependent phonon dispersion in Ca$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$RuO$_{4}$ ($x=0.4$, 0.6). The in-plane $\Sigma_{4}$ octahedral tilt mode softens significantly at the zone boundary of the high temperature tetragonal (HTT) \textit{I4}$_{\mathit{1}}$\textit{/acd} structure as the temperature approaches the transition to a low temperature orthorhombic (LTO) \textit{Pbca} phase. This behavior is similar to that in La$_2$CuO$_4$, but a new inelastic feature that is not found in the cuprate is present. An anomalous phonon mode is observed at energy transfers greater than the $\Sigma_{4}$ albeit with similar dispersion. This anomalous phonon mode never softens below $\sim 5$ meV, even for temperatures below the HTT-LTO transition. Neutron scattering has been used to investigate the evolution of the long- and short-range charge-ordered (CO), ferromagnetic (FM), and antiferromagnetic (AF) correlations in single crystals of Pr1-xCaxMnO3. The existence and population of spin clusters as refected by short-range correlations are found to drastically depend on the doping (x) and temperature (T). Concentrated spin clusters coexist with long-range canted AF order in a wide temperature range in x = 0.3 while clusters do not appear in x = 0.4 crystal. In contrast, both CO and AF order parameters in the x = 0.35 crystal show a precipitous decrease below ~ 35 K where spin clusters form. These results provide direct evidence of magnetic phase separation and indicate that there is a critical doping x_c (close to x = 0.35) that divides the phase-separated site-centered from the homogeneous bond-centered or charge-disproportionated CO ground state., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Phys. The surface structural phases of Ca(2-x)Sr(x)RuO(4) are investigated using quantitative Low Energy Electron Diffraction. The broken symmetry at the surface enhances the structural instability against the RuO6 rotational distortion while diminishing the instability against the RuO6 tilt distortion occurring within the bulk crystal. As a result, suppressed structural and electronic surface phase transition temperatures are observed, including the appearance of an inherent Mott metal-to-insulator transition for x = 0.1 and possible modifications of the surface quantum critical point near xc ~ 0.5., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

Ferromagnetic (FM) manganites, a group of likely half-metallic oxides, are of special interest not only because they are a testing ground of the classical doubleexchange interaction mechanism for the colossal magnetoresistance, but also because they exhibit an extraordinary arena of emergent phenomena. These emergent phenomena are related to the complexity associated with strong interplay between charge, spin, orbital, and lattice. In this review, we focus on the use of inelastic neutron scattering to study the spin dynamics, mainly the magnon excitations in this class of FM metallic materials. In particular, we discussed the unusual magnon softening and damping near the Brillouin zone boundary in relatively narrow band compounds with strong Jahn-Teller lattice distortion and charge/orbital correlations. The anomalous behaviors of magnons in these compounds indicate the likelihood of cooperative excitations involving spin, lattice, as well as orbital degrees of freedom., Comment: published in J. Neutron scattering results are presented for spin-wave excitations of three ferromagnetic metallic $A_{1-x}A^{\prime}_{x}$MnO$_3$ manganites (where $A$ and $A^\prime$ are rare- and alkaline-earth ions), which when combined with previous work elucidate systematics of the interactions as a function of carrier concentration $x$, on-site disorder, and strength of the lattice distortion. The long wavelength spin dynamics show only a very weak dependence across the series. The ratio of fourth to first neighbor exchange ($J_4/J_1$) that controls the zone boundary magnon softening changes systematically with $x$, but does not depend on the other parameters. We report ARPES results of the Fermi surface of Ca_{1.5}Sr_{0.5}RuO$_{4}, which is at the boundary of magnetic/orbital instability in the phase diagram of the Ca-substituted Sr ruthenates. Three t_{2g} energy bands and the corresponding Fermi surface sheets are observed, which are also present in the Ca-free Sr_{2}RuO$_{4}. We find that while the Fermi surface topology of the alpha, beta (d_{yz, zx}) sheets remains almost the same in these two materials, the gamma (d_{xy}) sheet exhibits a hole-like Fermi surface in Ca_{1.5}Sr_{0.5}RuO_{4} in contrast to being electron-like in Sr_{2}RuO_{4}. Our observation of all three volume conserving Fermi surface sheets clearly demonstrates the absence of orbital-selective Mott transition, which was proposed theoretically to explain the unusual transport and magnetic properties in Ca_{1.5}Sr_{0.5}RuO_{4}.
