The effects of climate warming are widely recognized; however, some studies have suggested that the rate of warming has slowed since the end of the twentieth century. However, the relationships between climate and the radial growth of trees during different periods of climate change have yet to be investigated fully. In the present study, tree-ring core samples were collected from Picea crassifolia and Juniperus przewalskii in the Qilian Mountains of northwest China to study the relationships between climate and radial growth. The core samples were divided into two groups: one with significant tree-growth reduction and another with insignificant reduction. Trees showing with significant growth reduction were more sensitive to climate change than trees showing insignificant growth reduction during the period of climate warming. P. crassifolia exhibited a stronger response to precipitation during May–June of the current year and from August of the previous year to June of the current year, both before and after climate warming. P. crassifolia exhibited a positive coherence with precipitation from August–September of the previous year and a negative coherence with the temperature of the current June during climate warming. After climate warming, J. przewalskii responded positively to precipitation in the current May and from the previous August to the current May. J. przewalskii also responded positively to temperature during January–February of the current year after warming. P. crassifolia responded to precipitation more strongly than J. przewalskii, whereas J. przewalskii showed a closer relationship to temperature than P. crassifolia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study tried to assess the prognostic value of semaphorin (SEMA) family genes in patients with tongue squamous cell carcinoma (TSCC) and the potential epigenetic alterations of the genes. The part of third-level TSCC data in The Cancer Genome Atlas-Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma (TCGA-HNSC) was extracted using the UCSC Xena browser for analysis. Among 20 SEMA genes examined, 7 were markedly upregulated, while 8 were substantially decreased in TSCC tissues compared with adjacent normal tissues. SEMA3A was the only gene with independent prognostic value in terms of recurrence-free survival (RFS) in multivariate analysis (hazard ratio [HR]: 1.697, 95% CI: 1.228–2.345, p = 0.001). Among the individual exons of SEMA3A, the exon 9 had a better prognostic value in terms of recurrence than total SEMA3A expression and its expression also independently predicted shorter RFS (HR: 2.193, 95% CI: 1.463–3.290, p < 0.001). The methylation levels of two CpG sites (cg06144675 and cg13988052) were moderately correlated with SEMA3A expression. Interestingly, cg06144675, which locates at the promoter region, showed a negative correlation with SEMA3A expression, whereas cg13988052, which is in the intron of SEMA3A gene body showed a positive correlation with SEMA3A expression. In conclusion, SEMA3A expression is aberrantly upregulated in TSCC tissues. Its exon 9 expression is a potentially valuable prognostic marker of unfavorable RFS in TSCC patients. Particulate matter contributes much to the haze pollution in China. Meteorological conditions and environmental management significantly influenced the accumulation, deposition, transportation, diffusion, and emission intensity of particulate matter. In this study, temporal and spatial variations of PM10 and PM2.5—and the responses to meteorological factors and environmental regulation intensity—were explored in Xi'an, China. The concentrations of PM10 were higher than those of PM2.5, especially in spring and winter. The mean annual concentrations of PM10 and PM2.5 markedly decreased from 2013 to 2017, but the decreasing trend has plateaued since 2015. The concentrations of PM10 and PM2.5 exhibited seasonal differences, with winter being the highest and summer the lowest. Air quality monitoring stations did not reveal significant spatial variability in PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations. The concentrations of PM10 and PM2.5 were significantly influenced by precipitation, relative humidity, and atmospheric temperature. The impact of wind speed was prominent in autumn and winter, while in spring and summer the impact of wind direction was obvious. Additionally, the emission intensity of SO2, smoke and dust could be effectively decreased with the increasing environmental regulation intensity, but not the concentrations of particulate matter. Climate warming may induce growth decline in warm-temperate areas subjected to seasonal soil moisture deficit, whereas increasing atmospheric CO2 concentration (Ca) is expected to enhance tree growth. An accurate understanding of tree growth and physiological processes responding to climate warming and increasing Ca is critical. Here, we analyzed tree-ring stable carbon isotope and wood anatomical traits of Pinus tabuliformis from Qinling Mountains in China to understand how lumen diameter (LD) determining potential hydraulic conductivity and cell-wall thickness (CWT) determining carbon storage responded to climate and Ca. The effects of climate and Ca on intrinsic water-use efficiency (iWUE) were isolated, and iWUE values due to only-climate (iWUEClim) and only-CO2 effects (iWUECO2) were obtained. During a low-iWUE period, the influences of climate on earlywood (EW) LD and latewood (LW) CWT prevailed. During a high-iWUE period, CO2 fertilization promoted cell enlargement and carbon storage but this was counteracted by a negative influence of climate warming. The limiting direct effects of iWUEClim and indirect effects of climate on EW LD were greater than on LW CWT. P. tabuliformis in temperate forests will face a decline of growth and carbon fixation, but will produce embolism-resistant tracheids with narrow lumen responding to future hotter droughts. Purpose. Immunotherapy provides a new treatment option for advanced gastric cancer (AGC). This study aims to explore the response markers of immunotherapy in AGCs. Methods. Next-generation sequencing was performed on 44 AGC patients who received immune checkpoint inhibitors and the associations between their outcomes after combination immunotherapy, and the clinicopathological/molecular characteristics were analyzed. Results. The current study cohort had a median progression-free survival (PFS) of 5.9 months, an overall survival (OS) of 12.1 months, and an objective response rate (ORR) of 36.4%. Through multivariable analysis of the clinical characteristics, primary tumor resection (HR = 2.66, 95% CI: 1.06–6.70, p = 0.037) and increased proportion of lymphocytes after combination immunotherapy (HR = 0.40, 95% CI: 0.16–0.99, p = 0.048) were revealed as independent predictors for patient outcomes. All the 18 patients who underwent genetic profiling were microsatellite-stable with a median TMB of four mutations per Mb. ATM alterations, PI3K pathway mutations, increased TMB, and positive PD-L1 expression were associated with the increased trend of PFS and ORR. According to the combination of baseline lymphocyte count, ATM mutation, TMB status, and PD-L1 expression, patients were stratified into higher- and lower-risk groups, with the lower-risk group showing improved PFS (HR = 4.7e−10, 95% CI: 0–inf, p = 0.02) and ORR (75% vs. 0%, p = 0.007). BRCA2 And CDKN1A Interacting Protein (BCCIP) is initially identified as a tumor suppressor. Some recent studies confirmed its p53 binding capability. In this study, we explored the regulatory effect of BCCIPβ on p53 stability in HPV-positive and HPV-negative HNSCC cells. RNA-seq data from TCGA-HNSC were extracted for transcript isoform analysis in HPV-positive and HPV-negative tumors. HPV16-positive UM-SCC-47 (SCC47) and UM-SCC-104 (SCC104) and HPV-negative SCC-9 (SCC9) and UM-SCC-1 (SCC1) cell lines were used as in vitro cell models. Results showed that BCCIP β was the dominant transcript in both HPV-positive and HPV-negative HNSCC cases. Knockdown of BCCIP β decreased p53 protein concentration in the two HPV-negative cell lines but increased p53 concentration in the two HPV-positive cell lines. BCCIPβ inhibition increased proliferation and G1/S transition of SCC9 and SCC1 cells. In comparison, BCCIPβ inhibition slowed proliferation and increased G1 arrest of SCC104 and SCC47 cells. BCCIPβ inhibition prolonged the half-life of p53 protein and reduced p53 ubiquitination in the two HPV16-positive cell lines. Co-IP assay confirmed interactions among BCCIPβ, HPV E6, and p53 in both SCC104 and SCC47 cells. In comparison, only the interaction between BCCIPα and p53 was confirmed in these two cell lines. Either E6 or BCCIPβ inhibition reduced p53 ubiquitination and increased p53 concentration. However, inhibiting E6 and BCCIPβ at the same did not generate synergistic effects. On the contrary, p53 ubiquitination level was even higher in the combination group, with lower p53 concentration compared to the shE6 group. BCCIPβ overexpression in SCC47 cells with HPV E6 depletion significantly reduced p53 ubiquitination. In conclusion, this study found a novel interaction between HPV E6 and BCCIPβ in HPV16-positive HNSCC cells. The presence of HPV E6 turned BCCIPβ from a p53 stabilizer to a ubiquitination facilitator. Background: While there have been encouraging preliminary clinical results for immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) in BTCs, it remains a challenge to identify the subset of patients who may benefit. In this study, we evaluated the efficacy of ICI treatment in patients with advanced BTCs, and explored potential biomarkers that are predictive of response. Methods: The study enrolled 26 patients with advanced microsatellite stable BTCs (15 with gallbladder cancers [GCs] and 11 with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma [ICCs]) who received ICI treatment. Targeted next‐generation sequencing (NGS) was performed on tumor tissue samples collected from 17 patients. Clinical and genomic characteristics were assessed for the correlation with clinical outcome. Results: Analysis of the baseline clinical characteristics showed that performance score (PS) of 0 was associated with a better prognosis than PS of 1 (HR = 1.08 × 109; 95% CI, 0∼Inf; P =.002). No significant correlations were found between clinical outcome and inflammation‐related indicators. NGS profiling of the available tumor tissues, revealed largely non‐overlapping somatic alterations between GCs and ICCs. Mutations in LRP1B (HR = 0.26; 95% CI, 0.06‐1.21; P =.067), ERBB2 (HR = 0.15; 95% CI, 0.02‐1.19; P =.04), or PKHD1 (HR < 0.01; 95% CI, 0‐Inf; P =.04) showed strong association with increased progression‐free survival (PFS) benefit. Subsequent analysis showed that alterations in the RTK‐RAS pathway were associated with improved outcomes (HR = 0.12; 95% CI, 0.02‐0.63; P =.003). Tumor mutation burden (TMB) was higher in patients with GC than those with ICC, and was associated with LRP1B mutations (P =.032). We found that patients with 19q amplification (19q Amp) and 9p deletion (9p Del) had poor PFS outcome (19q Amp, HR = 15.4; 95% CI, 2.7‐88.5; P <.001; 9p Del; HR = 4.88 × 109; 95% CI, 0‐Inf; P <.001), while those with chromosomal instability derived PFS benefit (HR = 0.24; 95% CI, 0.05‐1.17; P =.057). Conclusion: Our study identified several potential clinical and genomic features that may serve as biomarkers of clinical response to ICIs in advanced BTCs patients. Tree-ring δ13C and δ18O of dominant Dahurian larch and Mongolia pine in the permafrost region of the northern Great Higgnan Mountains, China were used to elucidate species-specific ecophysiological responses to warming temperatures and increasing CO2 over the past century. Larch and pine stable carbon discrimination (Δ13C) 13C and δ18O in tree rings both showed synchronous changes during the investigated period (1901–2010), but with species-specific isotopic responses to atmospheric enriched CO2 and warming. Tree-ring Δ13C and δ18O were controlled by both maximum temperature and moisture conditions (precipitation, relative humidity and vapor pressure deficit), but with different growth periods (Δ13C in June–July and δ18O in July–August, respectively). In addition, stable isotopes of larch showed relatively greater sensitivity to moisture deficits than pine. Climatic conditions from 1920 to 1960 strongly and coherently regulated tree-ring Δ13C and δ18O through stomatal conductance. However, climatic-sensitivities of tree-ring Δ13C and δ18O recently diverged, implying substantial adjustments of stomatal conductance, photosynthetic rate and altered water sources over recent decades, which reveal the varied impacts of each factor on tree-ring Δ13C and δ18O over time. Based on expected changes in leaf gas-exchange, we isolated the impacts of atmospheric CO2 and climate change on intrinsic water-use efficiency (iWUE) over the past century. Higher intracellular CO2 in pine than larch from 1960 onwards suggests this species may be more resilient to severe droughts in the future. Our data also illustrated no weakening of the iWUE response to increasing CO2 in trees from this permafrost region. The overall pattern of CO2 enrichment and climate impacts on iWUE of pine and larch were similar, but warming increased iWUE of larch to a greater extent than that of pine over recent two decades. Taken together, our findings highlight the importance of considering how leaf gas-exchange responses to atmospheric CO2 concentration influence species-specific responses to climate and the alteration of the hydrological environment in forests growing in regions historically dominated by permafrost that will be changing rapidly in response to future warming and increased CO2. The Qinling Mountains (Qinling Mts.) are characterized as a distinct transition of bioclimatic zones along the north-south geographic boundary in China. Although ongoing global warming may affect the growth of most tree species across elevation gradients, the effect of modern warming on the stable hydrogen isotopes of tree-ring wood is still unknown. In this study, we developed early- and late-wood δ 2H chronologies from 1900 to 2018 CE of lignin methoxy groups (δ 2H LM) at 700-m intervals from 1700 to 3100 m a.s.l. along the elevation gradient in Mount Taibai (Mt. Taibai), the peak of the Qinling Mts. The δ 2H LM values of the earlywood were relatively enriched in 2H compared to the latewood, and an elevation-dependent depleting trend along the altitudinal gradient was observed. Comparing the δ 2H LM values with modelled δ 2H values of precipitation (δ 2H Pre) of the sample sites, similar isotopic patterns can be obtained. The reconstructions of δ 2H Pre values confirm the strong coherence between the isotopic composition of the source water and the methoxy groups in the growing season. The consistency of δ 2H LM chronologies between the early- and late-wood at the higher sites was stronger than that at the lower sites. The additional lagged effect and climate response revealed significant seasonal and altitudinal differences. At the timberline site, δ 2H LM values of earlywood were mainly related to the January and February temperatures, whereas δ 2H LM values of latewood correlated most strongly with temperature from July to September, and both values were controlled by the amount of total precipitation. In addition, the combined new δ 2H LM chronologies, based on the lag-1 autocorrelation and the weighted average of the current year earlywood and previous latewood, could be used to merge the corresponding temperature signals from the middle- and low-elevation sites. Altitudinal correlations of elevation offset between the annual δ 2H LM chronologies and interpolations of precipitation and temperature suggested that the δ 2H LM values at higher elevations better represent regional climatic changes. Process modeling of tree growth responses to climate can improve our understanding of the functioning of tree growth under climate change, but these models do not consider so-called memory effects. Further, memory effects are unstudied in temperate forests of China, which is showing high vulnerability to climate warming. Here, we integrate a process-based Vaganov–Shashkin–Lite (VS-Lite) model of tree ring formation with the stochastic antecedent modeling (SAM) approach, to quantify the current and antecedent climatic drivers of the tree-ring width chronologies of 109 conifers in temperate China. Based on climate-response patterns, tree-ring width series were clustered into "warm-dry," "cold-dry," and "cold-wet." The VS-Lite results indicated growth in the "warm-dry" and "cold-dry" sites were primarily constrained by current soil moisture, while growth in the "cold-wet" sites was mainly constrained by cotemporaneous temperature. Compared to VS-Lite alone, we found significant improvements in model fit for the SAM framework in all forest types. Notably, antecedent drivers explained 14%, 11%, and 21% of the growth variations in "warm-dry," "cold-dry," and "cold-wet" sites, respectively, challenging the assertion that long memory is only important in dry forests. Commonality analysis revealed that growth in "cold-dry" and "cold-wet" sites was determined by antecedent climate while growth in the "cold-dry" and "warm-dry" clusters were determined by the endogenous (autoregressive) memory. In "warm-dry" and "cold-wet" sites, growth was significantly affected by antecedent temperature in opposite directions, whereas in the "cold-dry" sites it was affected by antecedent soil moisture conditions and soil moisture-temperature interactions. Our combined process-empirical model demonstrates that memory is prevalent across temperate forests in China and also improves representation of tree growth in diverse forests under novel climate conditions of the future. Flash drought is an extreme phenomenon, characterized by unusually rapid intensification of drought severity, with strong impacts on plant growth especially for crops. However, it's unclear how hydrometeorological changes contribute to flash drought and how vegetation physiology, greenness, and productivity respond to flash drought. In this study, we developed an multivariate integrated framework for flash drought identification using a regression model based on principal-components analysis (PCA): the PCA regression flash drought (PRFD) model. Three criteria are specified to emphasize the rapid intensification of drought and its impacts on vegetation growth and water resources. We applied our new model in two geographical units with different climates and hydrology: one is dominated by agriculture and subject to natural drought (the Loess Plateau) and the other, a natural region with infrequent drought (the Qinling Mountains). We found that high frequency of flash droughts is most likely to occur in the eastern and central Loess Plateau and part of the Qinling Mountains. However, in relatively humid areas, flash drought shows strong intensity such as the Qinling Mountains and western and eastern edges of the Loess Plateau. Trend analysis indicates that PRFD has increased frequency, longer duration, and stronger intensity since the 1990s in both regions. From an ecological perspective, PRFD also showed a spatial pattern consistent with values of vegetation-related proxies that were below the long-term average, demonstrating vegetation transpiration, normalized-difference vegetation index (NDVI), gross primary productivity have obvious feedback on flash drought events. The Loess Plateau's NDVI responded immediately to flash drought, versus a 1-month lag in the Qinling Mountains. Because our proposed framework integrates multiple aspects of drought information, it can be applied in areas outside the study region according to regional hydrometeorological conditions. The hydroclimate of southwestern China has experienced pronounced fluctuations over the past few decades. In this study, the total cloud cover variability of southwestern China during May–October for the past 276 years was reconstructed based on the composite tree-ring δ18O chronology. The record spans the common interval from 1734 to 2009 CE. Moisture-related factors, such as relative humidity, the precipitation, and cloud cover over the region, were the climatic factors controlling tree-ring δ18O. The reconstructed cloud cover exhibited a decreasing trend since 1900, which was linked to the weakening of the Indian summer monsoon. However, the relationship between cloud cover and the monsoon system was temporally unstable, which may be due to El Niño-southern oscillation and the Indian Ocean dipole. Furthermore, the sea surface temperature (SST) over the Indian and East Pacific oceans influenced the delivery of moisture over the study area; however, the influence of SST on the different oceanic regions varied between different periods. During the low-cloud-cover period, the link between SST and regional cloud cover weakened, and local circulation became the driving factor. Additionally, local circulation may disrupt the influence of monsoons on the hydroclimate in southwestern China, which was supported by the backward trajectory results. As the most frequent and longest-lasting climate-related disasters, droughts are complex processes caused by hydrological imbalance, and have significant effects on ecosystem function and socioeconomic development. However, most conventional satellite-based drought indices and combined drought indices are mechanically constrained by the fact that they were developed and evaluated for a specific climate or critical ecological region, especially in China. A comprehensive drought index should be developed for extensive application in different climate-hydrology regions. To address this problem, an optimised principal component analysis method (PCA-RF) was proposed to support drought assessment across the transitional area between the humid and arid regions in central China, including the Loess Plateau (LP) and Qinling Mountains (QL). This method eliminated the causal relationships of non-linear changes for multi-aspect parameters such as land surface temperature, precipitation and soil moisture, and was used in developing a new index named "Meteorological drought index by PCA-RF methods (PMDI)". The results showed that PMDI had higher correlations and lower root mean square error than other drought indices (established using the empirical-weights method) with the 1-month standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI-1). That means PMDI performed well in meteorological drought monitoring. Additionally, the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) were utilised to evaluate PMDI effectiveness in detecting vegetation response to drought, which represents agricultural drought. The results indicated that correlations between PMDI and vegetation indices (VIs) were stronger when severe or extreme droughts occurred, and that their relationships were affected by the high spatiotemporal heterogeneity in vegetation change over the LP and QL. Overall, PMDI was shown here to be a very suitable index for monitoring meteorological drought (short-term) and has effective action in capturing the response of vegetation signals to agriculture drought events (long-term). Given the excellent performance of PMDI in diverse climate-hydrology conditions of our study regions, we concluded that the PMDI has considerable potential as a drought monitoring methodology on a larger spatial scale. • A new drought index was developed (PMDI), which integrated multiple sources of information describing different aspects. • PMDI performed well in different climate-hydrology regions for short- and long-term drought monitoring. • PMDI has reasonably good potential applicability in drought monitoring on a larger spatial scale. • We evaluated larch tree-ring δ2H LM and δ13C LM in individual and pooled, bulk and degreased wood from permafrost forest. • The total lignin content, but not G-lignin and methoxy isotopes, shifted at the boundary between sapwood and heartwood. • The May climate strongly affected the heartwood lignin content and tree growth. • δ2H LM series showed great potential as growing season temperature and VPD proxies. The hydrogen and carbon stable isotope ratios (δ2H LM and δ13C LM values) of tree-ring lignin methoxy groups have recently been recognized as valuable palaeoclimate indicators. However, the environmental factors but also sample preparation processes that might cause variations of δ2H LM and δ13C LM values have been not fully explored. Furthermore, the temporal dynamics of wood lignin content on both isotopes hasn't been investigated. To investigate the effects of total lignin content, removal of lipids and differences between individual and pooled tree-ring series on isotopic values, we analyzed ring samples of dominant Larix gmelinii trees from a typical permafrost region of northeastern China. We also examined relationships between δ2H LM and δ13C LM values with annual-resolution lignin content and climatic parameters over the common period of overlap 1901 to 2013. We found that the inter-tree variability between the individual and pooled isotopic chronologies was consistent, and the removal of lipids did not change the results of stable isotope measurements. The total lignin content shifted between the heartwood and sapwood, whereas the content of guaiacyl monomers (G-lignin), the only donor of methoxy groups, remained constant. Correlations analysis between lignin proxies and climate variables indicated that the heartwood total lignin content was positively correlated with the intrinsic water-use efficiency, temperature and vapor-pressure deficit (VPD), but negatively with the early-growing-season standardized precipitation evaporation index. Whilst δ2H LM values were positively correlated with the growing season temperature (May to August) and VPD, particularly in August, δ13C LM series showed insignificant correlation. In arid and semiarid regions, riparian forests are crucial for maintaining ecological biodiversity and sustainability, and supporting social and economic development. For the typical arid and semiarid ecosystem, streamflow variability is thought to be the dominant factor influencing the vulnerability and evolution of the riparian forests, which often leads to the neglect of other potentially important factors such as nutrient availability and transport. Here, we measured annual stable nitrogen isotopes (δ15N) and nitrogen concentrations (N%) in the tree rings of Populus euphratica Oliv. (Euphrates poplar) over a 90 year period (1920–2012), collected from the lower researches of the inland Heihe River, northwestern China. Coupling with our previous dual-isotope (δ13C and δ18O) chronologies and estimated intrinsic water-use efficiency (iWUE), we examined the linkages between tree-ring δ15N and δ18O, iWUE, streamflow, and then explored the contributions of each to tree growth during the study period. Our results show that after 1975, a statistically significant correlation between tree-ring δ15N and river streamflow appears, indicating the river as a potential carrier of nitrogen from the upper and middle reaches to the lower research trees. In addition, the linkage between tree-ring δ15N and iWUE suggests substantial influence of carbon and nitrogen together on photosynthesis and transpiration of trees, although this connection become decoupled since AD 1986. The commonality analysis revealed that the nitrogen impacts indicated by tree-ring δ15N on tree growth cannot be ignored when evaluating riparian forest development. The fertilization effects caused by rising CO 2 concentration complicate the nitrogen constraints on tree growth during the later part of the past century. Our results have potentially broad implications for identifying the limited factors for dryland forest ecosystems that are susceptible to natural water resource variations and human activities. • Tree-ring δ15N increased with a rate of 0.4‰ per decade but nitrogen concentration remained stable during 1930–2008. • Tree-ring δ15N and streamflow both showed rising trends, but they only significantly correlated over the period of 1975–1994. • The carbon and nitrogen cycling of riparian trees was associated but decoupled after 1986. • The δ15N and iWUE regulated Euphrates poplar tree growth together, but they have different dominant periods. Stable isotopes in wood lignin methoxyl groups (δ2H LM and δ13C LM values) have been suggested as valuable complementary paleoclimate proxies. In permafrost forests, tree growth is influenced by multiple factors, however temperature appears to have the strongest impact on tree growth and, therefore, on carbon cycling. To test whether δ2H LM and δ13C LM values of trees from permafrost regions might record climate parameters, two dominant tree species (Larix gmelinii , larch, and Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica , pine) collected from a permafrost forest in China's Greater Hinggan Mountains, were investigated. The two tree species larch and pine covered time spans of 1940 to 2013 and 1870 to 2013, respectively. Results showed significant correlations of pine and larch δ2H LM values and larch δ13C LM values with temperatures and in particular with the mean temperature of the growing season from April to August. However, only weak correlations of δ2H LM and δ13C LM values with moisture conditions, such as precipitation amount and relative humidity were observed. In addition, species specificity in the climate response was most obvious for δ13C LM values. Compared to a temperature reconstruction based on tree ring width, pine δ2H LM –based reconstruction showed strongest spatial correlations with regional temperature. Therefore, δ2H LM values might be a promising proxy to reconstruct growing-season temperatures in permafrost regions. • We applied a model to explore the response of spruce and pine growth to drought. • Both species were sensitive to early-growing-season soil moisture availability. • The mean contribution of soil moisture were above 80% for both tree species. • The two tree species displayed similar patterns of resilience to drought. Understanding the mechanisms for how tree growth responds to drought is important for forest conservation and management in semi-arid regions, particularly under ongoing climate change. However, most previous studies have been relied on linear statistical analysis, unsupported by insights into tree physiological processes. In this study, we applied process-based Vaganov–Shashkin (VS) model to investigate the stem radial growth response and resilience of Qinghai spruce (Picea crassifolia) and Chinese pine (Pinus tabuliformis) to intense drought in semi-arid region of China from 1960 to 2013. Correlation analysis indicated that soil moisture availability in the early growing season (May to July) significantly limit stem growth for both tree species, but Chinese pine was affected more strongly by drought legacies. The model results validated our statistical modeling results, and quantified the effects of temperature and soil moisture on the intra-seasonal variation of the relative stem radial growth rate. The influence of soil moisture on the relative stem radial growth rate during the early growing season was significantly higher for positive pointer years (years with greater than mean growth) than for negative pointer years (years with less than mean growth) for both tree species. Interestingly, the two species displayed similar patterns of growth resilience in response to drought. Based on our successful application of the VS model, our results provide important insights into the two main tree species in the semi-arid Helan Mountains, and offer a new perspective on tree growth processes and their varying responses and resilience to drought.
